I don't care what it looks like...honestly. Steak 'n Egger started out pretty swell. Fast, efficient service...cute tagline: "We doze, but never close." 24 hours, sweet. The price is right. My "2-2-2-2" plate was under $5. (2 bacon, 2 sausage, 2 pancakes, 2 eggs). Oh, the coffee. Not good. Diners specialize in hot/strong coffee...c'mon! The food here, like another reviewer said, is almost inedible. I want to make clear that this is no exaggeration on my part. We all make claims like this at one point or another about some food that is just not what we wanted, didn't taste like our favorite, etc. But, that is not the case here: the food is awful. Other reviewers have said that it is good or average diner food, but that is a perverse lie. They should be ashamed for deceiving others and allowing them to believe that this food will go down like all other diner fare. It is a cruel prank. To help others understand, I will contrast this place with another, average diner. If you've had the displeasure of going to Kevin's Hamburger Heaven at 38th and Pershing, then you know the food is overpriced, incredibly greasy, and tastes awful. When trying to eat my omelet and hashbrowns (which latter must have been used to clean up an ancient mess on the floor before making it to my plate) at the Steak and Egger, I wished that I could be eating at Kevin's. Kevin's cooks are celebrity chefs compared to the practical jokers they have flipping burgers at the Steak and Egger. Remember, Kevin's is terrible at its best, but if the Steak and Egger is much, much worse, then it stands to reason that we're not even talking about food anymore, rather some Lovecraftian muck found in an old house in Innsmouth. I'll wrap this up by reminding you that my comments are not exaggerated, and I am doing this from duty to my fellow citizens, the duty we all have to keep others from danger. read more

The last time I was here I was with a huge group of drunks. I don't know about everybody else but I couldn't stand up, much less sit down properly. I ordered the hamburger 'n' egger, which consisted of 2 eggs, a hamburger patty, some hash browns, and buttered toast. All was decent save for the hamburger: Every bite was riddled with the unmistakable taste of freezer burn! I couldn't even finish it, and I have one hell of a voluptuous alcohol-induced appetite. I really don't expect the quality of a fine steakhouse at a neighborhood diner, but I do expect to get what I ordered. I ordered a T-Bone steak. A T-Bone steak contains a strip steak on one side of the bone and a tenderloin (filet mignon - the better and more valuable cut) on the other side of the bone. Well, the so called "T-Bone" they served had the tenderloin side scavenged off, leaving maybe a half a bite sliver. Their excuses about the size of the strip steak size and the fault of the vendor were meaningless (and I'm not convinced either is true), and their weak apology is not a substitute for the menu deception or corrective customer service. Just because a strip steak has the bone in does not make it a "T-Bone steak" without the tenderloin cut on the other side. read more

On the brunch hunt for the best french toast, a work friend gushed over this place. BEST french toast he said. We went there, lone diner in industrial area. kinda liked that aspect. Like a gem stashed away. No posing like all these GASTRO-PUBS. French toast, pretty good. If you go there, get it. wasn't the best, wasn't the worst. It was nice. But if you call a place steak 'n' eggers, your steak and eggs better be great. It was tough and under seasoned. the hash, was like mash potatoes. Waiters add their own tip to your tap please ask for a receipt at all times. I feel that a tip should be added with permission from the guest & earned. Also I am a party of one person not 6 people so why are they added a tip on their own. While we were plotting our illicit business model, our waitress made sure coffee cups were always filled, though the coffee is on the weaker side for a diner. The food came out fast, and the portions were just right. Apparently you can get a chili omelette here. This is probably better in theory than practice. Similar to our new business venture. Good, cheap, greasy breakfast for curing a hangover, or perhaps your last meal before being arrested for certain illegal activities. This place is great! If "Waffle House" had a child that moved to Chicago, didn't smoke, and made better food, this would be it. The Saturday morning breakfast crowd was eclectic and hopping. Cars in the smaller parking lot ranged from work trucks to BMW's. Inside, people were friendly. Much like a Waffle House, you have to walk between the counter and the outside ring of tables to get anywhere. The set-up is conducive to strangers saying "good morning" as they walk by your table, as a few did. A small bit of neighborly humanity is a welcome change in what can be a cold city. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Without a doubt, the food exceeded expectations. They have pretty much anything you could think of. The omelets are huge and filling. Surprising for a dinner, for those who are health conscious, everything egg can be made with egg whites. The hash browns can be ordered in a number of ways, cheesy, veggie, etc. The hash browns probably should be ordered well done (i.e., crispy). As an aside, they make their own pico de gallo salsa which is fresh and spectacular! Put it on everything. All in all, great service, open 24 hours, great food, and prices that are better than fast food meals, this place is worth the trip! read more

I like this place, I love 24 hour spots. No the food is not five star dining, but for the cheap prices the food is amazing. I live about 3 blocks from there, and I work very late, so when I get home and dint feel like cooking, its great. The staff is usually pretty friendly. The ladies who work over night are so delightful. I have had only 1 bad experience, and it was from one of the very young waitresses who was too busy talking with her friends to take my order. I went here a long time ago with an ex, but my roommate Dan and I went here last night around 11pm since I had driven by it earlier in the night on my way to DHL HQ to pick up a package. Look at the Google satellite map of this area. Relatively new May Street Cafe is only a skip away, but Steak & Egger has been there for ages. This is one of those greasy spoon diners that I wish was right down the street. Instead we have Lorraine's Diner and Hollywood Grill (which I don't even consider a diner). Steak & Egger is open 24 hours and provides deicious stick to your stomach food. I ordered two eggs over hard, pancakes (2), and grapefruit juice. My roommate went with steak and eggs and hashbrowns. We sat at the counter and watched the cook diligently prepare our meals, just like when we used to go to Tastee 29 (now 29 Diner) in Fairfax, VA. The huge vat filled with butter, the smell of bacon (and steak) frying, pies enclosed in glass. Our meals were ready in minutes. My only complaint was that the cook broke my yolks (I order them over hard so I don't have to eat the yolks). This cook made the most perfect pancake. Dan compared them to McDonald's big breakfast pancakes, which may not have been far off but I haven't had one of those in a dog's age. He had ordered his steak medium rare, but not even the slightest amount of pink was to be found. It mattered not. This place is a total dive so it's really cheap. Just remember you get what you pay for. Our waitress was more concerned with shoving food in her face than with shoving food in ours. This diner is a tiny place and I still had to flag her down to get refills for my mom's coffee which was horrible anyway. When we were finally able to catch and keep her attention, I ordered 2 eggs scrambled with cheddar cheese, a side of sausage links and an order of hashbrowns. The eggs were ok, the sausage links were dry and a bit overcooked and my hashbrowns were disgusting. They came to me lukewarm and dripping with grease, almost as if they had been boiled. Luckily, my order came with toast and it's really hard to fuck up toast. My mom ordered the steak n egger which wasn't really worth the money, what little we did spend on it. I recently went here when I needed to go to THE EMERGENCY ROOM because my FINGER was COMING OFF!!! and my GIRLFRIEND really wanted to eat HERE! well, I ate here. It was good. aside from the paranoia of my IMPENDING DEATH. Okay it's not actually that dramatic, but my finger could have fallen off and I was a little pre-occupied. I've been wanting to go here for awhile, but I moved here in the summer and I kind of felt like it was a fall time thing to do. It was the morning.. I needed to wake up. It was actually one of the best mornings. great food. I loved the coffee. It felt good. later that day. the hospital didn't help me much. I was hungry after work (11pm) today, and my friend has told me that this is a great place for steaks so I decided to give it a try. It turned out that my decision was right. The horchata was good. The T-boned steak that I had was seasoned very well. One thing to mention is that their salsa picante verde (green hot sauce) was DELICIOUS. Well I ordered ribeye and eggs, but they accidentally thought I wanted a skillet. I should have been suspicious when she asked me what kind of cheese. They were very apologetic and offered to remake my food. I ended up just asking them to add Swiss and eating the skillet. It was by far one of the best skillets I have ever eaten. Every ingredient was fresh, and I could barely finish the quantity of food served. Great staff, great food in huge quantities, and a true diner environment. Yelp won't let me give 10 stars so 5 will have to do. Edit: I had to take an intermission while eating to write the review because there was so much food.
