Came here for lunch and ordered the patty melt with a side of coleslaw. The patty melt was ok, not the best I've ever had but once I added the extra pickle to it from my husbands plate it was better. The fries were decent too. The coleslaw was not good, it tasted old and was tinted purple from the red cabbage, so God only knows how old it was. It did not taste fresh at all and I could not finish it. The service was alright, the waitress who served us was on top of her game and did a great job. There's hardly anyone there, it's not busy at all, yet they completely ignore us. After finally being seated we get our drink orders taken and receive them fairly quickly. It has been a long time since I have had a truly terrible dining experience, so let me thank the fine people at this Steak and Shake for providing a memorable experience. Trying to eat here was a comedy of errors. I do not know if the experience is typical or if we came on a night of the perfect storm. However you look at it, we entered with expectations of a simple but good meal, and we left still hungry and quite puzzled. I had just arrived in the area and met with two coworkers who had also traveled to the area for some business we had to deal with this week. They had been here before and recommended the Saltgrass Steak House. We took a drive there because it was pretty close to our hotel. However, the parking lot at Saltgrass was full, there were people waiting outside, and three - count them - buses were in the lot. We figured that we would be waiting a long time and having a late meal, which no one wants before starting work early the next day. The Saltgrass was probably full of people who had been at the nearby Six Flags all day. We were going to look for another restaurant when I had a bright idea: "Let's go to Steak and Shake next door." Rather than drive around, we gave it a try. The long line of teenagers waiting to pay their bills should have been a sign to us. However, we thought that we had come at a decent time because the teenagers were leaving, and the place was not that crowded. How long could it take to get a few burgers? Well, we don't know. A waitress took our drink order but then disappeared. Another one came to take our food order and must have asked us to repeat our orders a dozen times. After a while, we got the drink orders partially, although she did not deliver the shakes that the other two ordered. About 20 minutes later, we received the burgers. No sign of the bowl of chili I had ordered with my meal - which should have come before the burgers. Unfortunately, every burger order was wrong. Nothing matched what we ordered. The print-out with the burgers had a couple right and one wrong, but the print-out did not match anything. So we sent them back, And waited. And waited. After another 20 minutes or so (about 50 minutes time in the restaurant), we gave up and left. I told the besieged manager at the check-out that we were bailing. There was no request that we stay and finish - or receive - our meal. I asked what was going on and heard something about pulling in another manager to run the grill. What did we do? We went next door to Saltgrass, which had emptied a bit and had room for us right way. That is another review to come. Steak and Shake - not sure what went on during this trip because they generally are pretty good around the country. And how did they feed all those teenagers and yet could not handle our simple orders? Who knows? read more

There were 2 cars in front of me, that took about 10 minutes until I got to the speaker to order, I then waited 15 minutes to order, and by the time I pulled around, the other 2 cars were still in front of me, and had not gotten their food. The food was freshly prepared and better than average. Prices seem to be a bit lower than they used to be. Eat the fries first - these skinny guys cool off fast. It did take about 10 minutes for us to finally order but after we did the food was out within 5 minutes, including the milkshake I ordered. I get you have to wait for food sometimes, but like half an hour or so for a cup of chili and a burger for my friend, while watching cooks move around slowly, obviously not caring? There weren't even that many people there. I've worked fast food before, that was unnecessary. Half the place had stuff on tables, obviously no rush to try to clean up the place. A worker walked in smelling HEAVILY of weed (legal or not, COME ON). They handed us our food, finally, without a word of thank you or have a good day, etc. We almost asked for a refund. Honestly regret not having done so sooner. I don't even want to eat my food because of how we were treated. Felt very disrespectful. I know it's not a restaurant, but it doesn't mean you can't have some sense of service. A friend described it as disturbing and I absolutely agree. Legit would put zero stars if I could. I've never been to a Steak 'n Shake where I experienced great service. Today, was no different. We got here around 8:40 p.m. after visiting Six Flags. We ordered right away. They must not have enough staff because everyone was running around making milk shakes, making drinks, taking orders, or filling orders. At about 9:15 p.m. we finally received our food. My nephew's (9 yrs old) order was not ready and they said it would be out soon. We ate our food because we thought it would be out soon. After about 15-20 min, we asked someone about it. My nephew was starving and he still hadn't received his food. Our waitress who had been helping people pay their checks, told us the kitchen had forgotten about it. They brought it out quickly. My nephew said it tasted really gross and didn't even eat much of it. I normally love Steak 'n Shake despite their lack of service. *If you go here, try to get Gaby as your waitress, she's awesome.
