I was getting a recall taken care of at the nearby car dealer. It was going to take a while, so I figured I would walk to the Steak and Shake 2 doors over. Wish I had just gone to cracker barrel. An R2 unit has more warmth and charm than this place. The staff has been reduced to a kiosk. No one greets you. The sign directs you to Touch the screen and we will make your burger. With what they are saving in staff pay, you would expect better prices. Burger fry's and drink was almost $10. And I just wish they would get a French fry cutter that didn't make such skinny fries. Beef tallow can't improve fries like this. One last thing. The kiosk asks for a tip. read more

Haven't been to steak and shake in a decade. Wanted to try it since they use tallow to fry. The food was decent but I found that the employees weren't very helpful. The bathrooms weren't that clean and I think that says something about a restaurant. Also you have to scan a QR code every time you refill your drink. A bit inconvenient and overkill. Slowest service ever experienced. I got to steak and shake and already I have had enough time to lose my patience and write an entire review. Before getting to this moment, I have 29 minutes and moved 1 spot in the drive through. Slowest service ever and I don't know if this food, let alone any food, could make up for this. Only reason im waiting is because I have 4 people in the car. All of who have lost their patience as well. about 10 minutes later: Just got handed the wrong food. The man at the window took back the food and came back a couple minutes later with different food. All of our shakes were made wrong and we were also missing one. Staff is rude and incompetent, the female working lost her mind at me when I told her we'd come back after running to Walmart to pick up our order. She started yelling at me to not be rude. I hadn't so much as raised my voice. I had to file a credit card dispute to get my order refunded. This was by far the worst food we've had in a long time. We ordered delivery. The food was very fast--but disgusting. It's like they didn't cook the sandwich or the fries. They forgot all the cheese we requested with out order. The sandwich was soggy and undercooked. The fries were super greasy, soggy & cold; same for the onion rings. Wow. I can't believe how horrible my experience was. We went to the drive thru for happy hour shakes and waited in line for about 40 minutes. And it wasn't even a long line, it just took forever. Once we reached the speaker we were asked to wait... and we waited another additional FIFTEEN minutes. Are we lunatics for waiting this long? Maybe, but the need for shakes was high and it was a celebration. Turns out they only had two people staffed which is ridiculous.Unbelievable that they wouldn't staff more people during happy hour. This place has really gone down hill since the last time we were here. There is no longer any wait staff. We ordered on a kiosk then had a few dirty tables to choose to sit at. We chose one with some crumbs that we dusted with our napkins. When they called our number, our food was cold, like our order was ready long before they called us. My husband's burger was supposed to be a double and was tiny and the bacon looked like chips rather than strips. I was disappointed with the new industrial feel, the dirty environment (even the bathrooms were nasty), and the less than stellar food. Don't think we will be back. read more

May actually be dangerous to eat here. My daughter has been vomiting all day from food poisoning from this location. My wife had to go to the bathroom multiple times last night during sleep. My stomach is also in knots. And this is NOT the first time that has happened from this location.... I have been to this location over 25 times in 10+ years. - The food made sick one time last year - The food gave my son a stomach ache 1.5 years ago - The staff was always friendly - The fries have been under cooked a couple times in the past and we've had to throw them out - We've had to throw out our shakes twice in the last 6 months. The shakes recently had SO much sugar in them that my kids said it burned their throats. I can confirm this. In the past the shakes were delicious from here. The plain vanilla shake tasted like actual sugar, raw sugar. They didn't used to taste this way. We used to love this place 4-5 years ago but their quality is absolutely horrid now. I don't think it's the staffs fault because they have had multiple staff changes and it seems consistently awful. Unfortunately we will never return. read more

Steak 'n Shake is one of my favorite fast food chains, but this particular location leaves much to be desired. I can't comment on the quality of food here and because I haven't made it that far the only two times I've been to the Grandville location. My wife and I tried the dining room about a year ago and left after not being acknowledged by anyone for 10 minutes (it wasn't busy, by the way). Last night, we tried going through the drive-thru for some shakes after a movie, but left after 10 minutes of not moving in the line (again, it wasn't busy). I'm not sure what the deal is, but they need to figure it out. We will not be back and it might be best for them to close permanently, since they can not seem to figure out what service is. I'm not one to post bad reviews (you can check out my account), as I feel like if something is lacking, it's not worth posting about. I am embarrassed at how long I waited at the drive thru speaker without even ordering. I had waited so long by the time I got up the the window, the employee giggled as she told me it would be 10-15 minutes. I waited nearly 20 minutes, couldn't get anyone to come to the drive thru speaker. I left, there was literally one car waiting at the window and maybe 3 tables inside the restaurant. Waited in line for 34 minutes with 4 cars in front of us. I am patient, so again, we waited. FINALLY got our food, pulled away, and ended up having to spend 10 more minutes in line because our order was wrong. I am an avid fan of SNS, not my best experience this morning. Finally convinced my wife (not a fan) to hit the shake up for breakfast. Our server was certainly new but really did a great job. The issue was the pancakes. Not the pancakes specifically but the hair carefully baked within the folds of a silver stack. Yum. The manager wisked away the follicle filled funnel cakes and crossed them off the bill. Thank you. She did offer to replace them which was the farthest thing from my wife's mind. Especially after the rather audible debate as to whose hair was the pancake perpetrator. Not really something the customer wants to hear nor cares about the origin. 2 stars because my skillet was just fine and let's face it, hair happens, let's just work on our response to this issue. read more

Yesterday around midnight, we saw all the lights on at Steak and Shake (it says open 24 hours) and decided to get a couple of shakes. We waited for 10min at the drive through and then drove up to the window...but no one acknowledged us. i'm going to start this review saying that the employees were very nice and patient. however, they took quite literally forever. i didn't have a large order, just two combos and one 444 and a shake. i think i have been waiting for about 30 minutes in an empty parking lot. My burger was cold, fries were hot, and the shakes were delicious. The place looks run down on the outside and I've seen better Steak 'n Shakes than this one. Well, I love Steak 'n Shake. Love. Once a week, after work, my coworkers and I will usually take up a table of 5-15. In fact, this location is usually where we'd go, since we work right near Rivertown Mall. On the 01/28/2011, I was out to eat with my boyfriend and 2 friends, and it was busy, I'm not going to deny that. Still, that is no excuse for the grill cook to drop the wooden planks (that are used to weigh down the buns on the grill) to the floor, pick them up, and use them again. Thank goodness we'd gotten our food, but a knot was in our stomachs, who knows what happen to it we didn't see... Beyond freaked out, we called the manager over. He was very cavalier about the whole situation and said he'd talk to the man we pointed out. This is what we saw: manager talk to man, 2 more men join discussion, they all turn to look at us, manager points to grill, manager walks away, manager puts more planks on the hook things beneath the grill. ... None of us saw him take the fallen ones away. Freaked, we go to pay. My friends pay cash, easy. I paid for my boyfriend and I's order with a credit card. I authorized $24.00 to be charged (tip included). I didn't notice until I was home that they charged me $25.10. Yes, it's a buck ten, but it's the principle of the matter, especially since the cashier looked like she was bothered to help us. I called S 'n S's customer service number and they were little help. I called the store, who told me to call the customer service number. I did get an email from S 'n S. It told me that my valuable information would be passed along to the appropriate district manager. Moral of my review, if you love Steak 'n Shake, do not, for your health, go to the Kenowa location!!!!! read more

I've actually never had a terrible experience here. My fiance come in here once and awhile late night, sometimes 1 or 2 in the morning when we go out for a drive. Maybe it's just the difference between coming in when it's busy, and coming in late night when everyone's a bit more relaxed because it's not so crazy. On occasion, we'll get a server that starts out a bit of a grump, but by the end of our meal he's laughing and joking with us. I think a lot of people don't realize that if you come in with a bad attitude, it's not going to make your experience any better. As far as food goes, it's a step up from fast food but I don't expect much else. My food is always hot, and seasoned the way I like it. And when I ask for extra pickles on my burger, they really stack it on. So no complaints there. read more

Pretty mediocre. The food tastes alright but service is poor. I have to say that they finally got my order right on my last visit though (too bad the middle of my burger was still pink). Food usually arrives okay though. The problem is that you either get a friendly waitress who forgets stuff or you get a cranky person with little personality. It is a cheap place to hang out though so I'll probably keep coming as long as my friends want to go there. I'll never come on my own nor recommend Steak-N-Shake though. Talk about a serious let down. Even though steak 'n Shake has that laid back vibe it is still a business, & the customers who come here vary to every age. I'm here to spend my money & shout out to the servers who complain about not making money. If you increased your customer service there is no doubt your take home pay would increase. I've came here for years, back to when you could smoke in the place. However this last experience was disappointing. Besides the cook (grilling) & another male server (not my server) were the only workers I saw working. Steak 'n shake you are paying far too many people to stand around & literally make people want to walk out the door. Future tips to Justin (my server) please don't seat me to a table then you immediately go sit down at a table with ur friend, then later have unnecessary conversations between other workers loud enough for the entire place to hear you, I don't need to no if you are racist, or if Cindy is not such a nice girl.. The ability to be a great server is to give the customer a great experience & you talked down about your workplace, & your service showed exactly how you felt... The service was not professional by any means. There are a lot of people working here who clearly do not want to succeed or push the company further, these people are hurting sales.. new management is desperately needed. Also if you have a "wet floor" sign out, the entire time across from my table I would expect the floor to be wet or just cleaned.. it was filthy & dry.
