The four of us have been here several times. When we first started coming a couple of years ago, it was great. But lately it's been going downhill fast. Take today for instance. Two ordered salads, two ordered burgers. The salads came, no utensils, no napkins. Had to ask. She brought out two forks , no napkins. Had to ask again for napkins. This is one of my favorite places to eat for fast food because they have so many menu options. The customers service was great, I only ordered a milkshake because after first using the restrooms to wash my hands I was overcome with disgust on hoe dirty it was. Obviously the restroom is well used but I always feel if an establishment is allowing something to be dirty that the public can see, how dirty is something we can't see? Nonetheless service was fast, menu items were abundant and the milkshake I ordered was creamy and thick enough that I still needed a straw 20'minutes later. Not like the runny drink through a straw watery shakes found at other fast food joints. Also it tasted like ice cream not like the fake milk drinks other places have. Also the prices were crazy cheap!!! $2.99 for a shake and other items like a 4 for 4 deal made it economical for a family to eat. Love the fries - they are thin and crispy like the potato sticks in a can from the grocery. Wifi was down while we were there. Lost a star. Bathrooms clean and well-stocked. Call me shallow but sometimes I just want a simple hamburger and fries at a good price that tastes good. My wife and I travel a lot and drive-thru food is often a downside to traveling by car. Steak 'n Shake, for me, is the antithesis of drive-thru hamburger joints. The burgers are individually cooked fresh based on your order and they are cooked by a person using a fresh 1/4 pound ball of ground steak, not some pre-formed patty of frozen meat. Their fries are exceptional if you like shoestring fries. If you like big fatty fries or steak fries, you're out of luck. These babies taste good. And don't get me started on the shakes. They are excellent. I can be a bit lactose intolerant and to the detriment of my travels, I still have a very difficult time passing up a Steak 'n Shake malted chocolate milkshake. Are these gourmet hamburgers? No. Do they come with bizarre or extravagant toppings? No. Does a single meal of burger, fries and drink cost nearly $20? No. Steak 'n Shake is a great value with food that is good to eat and it's not limited to hamburgers. They have a better selection of food than most drive thrus. Plus, I kind of dig the 50's diner motif. Most of them also have a breakfast but it's been a long while since I ate breakfast at a Steak 'n Shake so I don't want to comment on that. Let me add this: if you have a car full of kids that you have to feed, this is a good option for you so that once you leave, your kids are full, happy and you don't have to stand on a corner afterwards with a cardboard sign begging for money because your wallet is drained. read more

They need to pay a bit closer attention to cleanliness at this location. The partition between the tables are dirty and the restroom garbage was over flowing onto the floor. That being said, the service was great and the food was timely and good. I had the Cod sandwich w/fries and it was hot and cooked how it ordered it. Boy oh boy do I miss having a Steak n' Shake around where I live. I grew up in Indiana and this was thee place for the best shakes and burgers. I knew coming to Florida we would run into them and today we had perfect timing and located one in the Ocala area heading to St. Petersburg. The location is fantastic for travelers off of Hwy 200 and I75. So it was an pretty easy to dodge in, but keep in mind you must pass it and turn at the light. The parking lot was pretty dead just after 11 AM and that excited us, because these places get way too busy at rush. I noticed the parking lot was tidy as I pulled in and got a place by the door. Upon entering we were immediately greeted and seating in a booth... score! After a long car trip we all headed to the bathroom and found them clean, however the men's room had trash that was close to full. After setting down our waitress Kate immediately came by to take drink order and answer menu questions. She was all smiles and extremely sweet and helpful in every way. She was especially great with the kids which I loved. The dining room was about a quarter full when we arrived and by 11:30 AM many customers were coming in. I found the area clean and orderly with no debris on the floor. The tables were all set and ready for a mid day rush. It did not take long and drinks and shakes were on the table. I got my favorite strawberry that was just as good as the last time I had one over a year ago. Food orders were place and again our waitress Kate did a great job of working with the kids on selections. There was some weird power surge and the electricity briefly went out. Our waitress said it knocked the computers off line and there could be a delay, but it ended up not taking any longer in my opinion. Food was out within 15 minutes which is superb. Two of us got burgers, yummy, one got chicken fingers and ate everything and one grilled chicken sandwich which was tasty. Four home runs Unsure why this location has got some less the glowing reviews in the past, but this was a very good day for them. If I had to guess some reviews on slow service hit at rush which offers a challenge to restaurants, especially when fixing everything fresh. I would recommend them and hope to return next year when gong right by them again. read more

I want to put a review for the location in Silver Springs but it is not even in the map. Is the worst Steak n Shake I ever been. It was a Saturday night and the place was empty. But almost every table was dirty. Just two employees, and even when it is supposed to be open until 10pm, at 8pm they were dismissing people because they didn't wanted to take anyone else. My order was all messed up and the fries were old and taste like very old dirty oil. My high concept of the restaurant was all crumbled in here. What a miserable place to eat. We stopped at steak 'n Shake in Ocala it appears that they are now being responsive to comments in the reviews. Their bathrooms are cleaner and their tables were all clean. They do have kiosks and still are not serving any milkshakes with fruit so no real banana shakes or berry berry real strawberry. The best thing about this place besides the usually great hot crisp fries was Chef Pauline who immediately came to our aid at the machine, answered all our questions and was patient and hard working. Pauline got a 10 as in 10$ in a tip. She clearly went beyond the requirements of her job and we suggest if you experience someone like this in these continuing challenging Please reward them with a tip or a thank you:) read more

What was more disturbing was 2 elderly men sitting near us waited an hour or more and never got their food. They ended up leaving. My God daughter was not given a children's menu with crayons so she got one herself. No one in the diner had silverware with their burger plates so Im assuming unless you ask or have macaroni and cheese or chili they dont give you silverware. I have always liked the food at Steak & Shake and would give this place at least a 4 star because of that ... BUT ... the service was HORRIBLE at this one on College Road just off of I-75. Service so slow that at one time I counted 10 tables including ours still waiting a long time for our food. Saw 2 tables walk out after a lengthy wait. At least 2 tables ordered one of their very popular banana/chocolate or banana/strawberry shake. Both told "sorry, we are out of bananas"... WHAT!! I ordered a shake with mine...when food finally came out ... and we are talking over 30 minutes ... all 3 of our burgers were cold and no shake. Asked for it ... and it arrived finally arrived just when I was finishing up with the meal. Oh yeah ... the menu says a cookie comes with the meal. Well, the 3 of us never got one until we told them about it when paying the bill. This was a really bad experience and we will not be going back to this one again for sure. Maybe I should feel bad for the staff because they got terrible training ?? They could have at least thrown in an apology somewhere for their terribly slow service, but heard none at any of the tables. I am certain I witnessed 10 tables of people that will not return to this one. This Steak 'n Shake is located in Ocala on Hwy. 200 and we stop there frequently after visiting family. It seems to have gone downhill recently in cleanliness and customer service. I noticed it was starting to fill up quickly when we arrived probably due to the fact it was "happy hour" which means half priced milkshakes- Yum! We asked for a table that was part booth (we had a little one with us) and chairs- my preference. We were given menus but the part of the menu with all the $4 meals was missing. We had to ask for that part. Our waitress seemed to be in such a hurry after delivering our remaining part of our menu that she seemed agitated we haven't decided on our choices even though she didn't allow enough time to look over all the meal deals and get our little girl's order. She came back again (attitude in tow) and we placed our orders. I ordered unsweetened ice tea with two lemons and Splenda while the rest of my party ordered half priced milkshakes. Of course my ice tea came to the table minus lemons or splenda. Before I could utter a sound- she took off. I had to flag her down to ask for lemons and Splenda which her reply was "Oh yeah you did ask for that! " She returned a short time later with four lemon slices on a small plate in a pool of lemon juice with four packets of Splenda laid on top- two of which were soaked. My husband said "Wow, you must have made her angry!" While we were waiting for our food to arrive I noticed that the floor under our table was filthy- loaded with dirt, trash and food. And the wall behind my husband was coming apart at the seams from apparent water damage and was dirty to boot! As we were talking a huge water drop fell on my husband- we both said "What was that?" We look up at the ceiling and right above his head is a bulging water saturated dirty ceiling tile with a hole in it! Since he was on the booth side he was able to move down a little to avoid further drops. Our food was good, I think my Spicy Chicken sandwich was better than my husband's triple cheeseburger and our kid's cheeseburger had a ridiculous amount of pickle in it- in fact more pickle than meat and cheese- needless to say most of it was picked out. The two milkshakes that were ordered arrived at our table when we were halfway done with our meal. The children's Fudge Brownie milkshake met with approval by our granddaughter however, my husband's Peanut Butter Cup milkshake left a lot to be desired. He said "it tastes like a vanilla shake with peanut butter sprinkles on top- no flavor in the shake itself." Thank God it was half priced or he would have been more upset! My last comment about the cleanliness of this restaurant is the hallway where the restrooms are located smelled like old dirty mops left out in the sun for a few days- very pungent! I have a few pointers for management- clean up your restaurant and retrain your staff! Better Steak 'n Shakes are out there! We are visiting Florida from California and stopped at this location for lunch on our drive up to the northern part of the state. We love Steak and Shake, and were really looking forward to a delicious burger. My husband is a GM for a restaurant, so we know what to expect as far as good service, but more importantly, we are more patient than most when it comes to busy servers and full restaurants. We stood in the lobby for quite a long time as the sign said "please wait to be seated". A server walked past us 3 times saying "excuse me" forcing us to move aside as she served food. Seemed to me it would have been easier to seat us. When we asked about finding a seat, Jodi was extremely rude in informing us that she had SO much to do with no buss staff. I'm sure that a half full restaurant with only 2 un-bussed tables is very difficult to keep up with. (Can you detect the sarcasm in my voice?) She was probably one of the rudest servers we have experienced. Once we were seated, we waited for an eternity. My husband finally got up from the table to find a manager. He apologized, another server took our order and our food was delicious. The manager took care of our drinks for us. At that point, all would have been fine if there weren't sarcastic comments being made by other servers as they walked by us. Does it not make sense that if you are so unhappy to have us there that serving us quickly would be in your best interest? Take our order, give us food and let us get out of your hair! I eat at this location 1-2 times a year when traveling, however I'm not sure I'll be back. The place is absolutely filthy! You can see the dirt smeared around the floors and the corners haven't been cleaned in a long while. Like they use a dirty mop to just wipe around the floors. Definitely needs a good old fashioned DEEP CLEAN and start over! The booth seat was greasy and had crumbs all over and in the cracks. The bathroom sinks and toilets had so much dirt and soap grime and hair on them that I wouldn't even wash my hands. (Used hand sanitizer and a wet wipe in my car). It's important to understand that my comments are not because a place got messy on a rainy, busy day... The overall cleanliness of this place is a tragedy and I'm not quite sure how they are passing health inspections. This place is so disgusting. We had an absolutely awful experience here and I'm not the one to complain. The restaurant itself is filthy and you will almost immediately notice it on the floors and the chairs. We were seated and the waitress took our order. The waitress was rude and snappy. She brought out waters and the insides off both glasses were full of food remnants so we asked the waitress for new waters and before we could explain why she snatched both cups and walked away. The new water glasses also had food particles stuck on the inside (see picture). I had ordered a salted caramel shake initially too, after waiting 20 minutes the waitress came out and told me they had no pretzels (why did that take 20 minutes?). So I asked for the menus again and she seemed upset. After waiting 30 minutes and not getting anything other than dirty water we asked the waitress how long it would be and she huffed off to go check. She then immediately came back with our food. It was cold. When we went to the front and pay, the zoned out worker asked how everything was, to which I replied "crummy", she didn't even acknowledge us or ask what was wrong. The waitress came up to us and informed us that there were only two tickets that needed to be put in before ours. We couldn't believe how long it had taken without even having our order started, but we were hoping it wouldn't take much longer. One mixed review incoming, because we had high highs and low lows. Stopped in at this location in a return trip from visiting my favorite aunt (shhh, don't tell my other aunts). My husband had a hankerin for a milkshake, and he insisted we go inside. I was reading some of the other reviews as I checked in on Yelp, they weren't kidding about how filthy this place is. It was like a bomb had been set off in here. Tables weren't bused, the floor was a wreck, you could actually see the dirt buildup. Cleaning is not a priority here. My husband thought they were just busy and slammed, but a quick scan of Yelp had me thinking otherwise. We are seated and order waters and 4 milkshakes. The water came right away but those shakes took forever. Our server joked as she served them that they had to milk the cows. At least she's keeping her sense of humor amiss the chaos. I took several sips of my shake and detected this burnt metallic taste, at first I thought it was my imagination, but my daughter had been watching me and wanted to know if I wad tasting something funny TOO. We exchanged drinks, sampled each other's and decided something was wrong. The guy's shakes seemed fine, neither of them had chocolate, that was the common denominator. My husband signaled a server that there was a problem. I implored her to grab a straw and sample the shake, I felt something was seriously wrong. She told us that the metal from the cans sometimes gets too hot and can make the chocolate taste that way. It was really strong, to me it seemed more like I had actual metal in the shake. She offered to make us new shakes, those came out much faster. I don't know if the flavor was tainted for me, but I still felt like I could taste metal, but it was nothing like it had been, so it could just be phantom metal flavor. Lol The manager came over and asked us what had happened, so we talked to him for a few minutes. He apologized then comped the shakes, clearly the right thing to do. So, 3 stars is where I put this. Until the manager and employees worked to fix our shake problem, this was a 1 star review. The cleanliness and wait time need some serious improvement, but the customer service and the staff's willingness to make things right redeems the review. The manager coming over to talk directly to us also gets props from me. It seems to me that the staff has a good foundation to work from, some additional training in the issues I mentioned should put this place back on track. read more
