I was in contact with Steffans Jewelers for a specific ring design. I have been a customer of Steffans for 30 years and have always been very happy with their Jewelry, design's and quality of their work but this time they blew me away. To be specific I asked that they design a ring from some lose stones I was not currently using. I contacted their design team and I was treated with a prompt response, meet with the master jeweler and came up with a design that was unique to my stones and style. Suzanne spearheaded the project directly and communicated with me on all the steps during the way. The process took a while but I was not in any hurry since I understood the detail going into the ring. I received the ring today and this ring is the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. I cannot express how impressed I am with the level of customer service, detail in the design and the quality of the product. I am going to miss working with Steffans since we moved away from the area but I am so thrilled with the ring I will have forever. I decided to go to Steffan's to get my engagement ring and two wedding bands soldered together after receiving multiple recommendations due to their excellency in jewelry as well as their customer service. I am overall extremely happy with the work done to my rings. They look amazing. What I am less than impressed with is the customer service and lack of integrity I received from the sale associate Janelle. I went in expecting a two week turnaround time based on the below Facebook conversation I had with Steffan's. I even asked if an appointment was required and per their below response, one was not. When I met with Janelle she told me the jeweler was on vacation and they had a 3-4 week turnaround time and then gave me a hard time about how I should've made an appointment. I then referenced my Facebook message and her less than polite response to me was "the jeweler is a human too and deserves time off, we can have it done in the two week window for a $50 rush fee." She then told me it would be done by April 24th. I was very insulted by her comment as I never once said the jeweler didn't deserve time off. My husband just got back from a 6 month deployment, I'm well aware people need a break! I then paid the $50 as I am returning to an area that doesn't have a jeweler and desperately wanted my rings soldered. I awaited a call on the 24th that my rings were done, it never came. I called on the 25th and Janelle told me it would be done on the 26th. As unfair as I feel the rush fee was based on the below conversation I had, I do think Steffan's does exceptional work. WATCH... OUT! I want to relate an experience I had with an area jewelry store ( Steffans Jewelers, Inc. ) this past month, or so. It began on November 9th, when I took an old pocket watch into their McHenry store for repairs. That old watch originally did not cost me much, as I had purchased it in 1976 and it commemorated the Bi-Centennial ( 200th anniversary) of our United States, as well as the birth of our daughter (June 24th, 1976). I chose that jewelry store because it was practically the only local one listed, that stated that they did 'watch repairs'. Anyhow, they told me that they do not do the watch repairs onsite, but that they would have to send it out to a craftsman who did. I agreed and they promptly charged me $30 for shipping & insurance, as well an additional $28.50 for a deposit, or whatever. That latter charge would have been $6.50 more, but I requested a 'veteran's discount', which they granted. They also told me that the second charge would be deducted from the overall cost, if I did, indeed, have the work done... which I agreed to. Today, December 15th, I got a phone call that informed me my watch was back. And when I picked it up, I had to pay an additional $300. I was not happy about the overall cost, but I paid it, as I am more than happy to have my watch back in my possession; it has great sentimental value. I think it looks very nice and it is once again, running: hopefully for a long time. I include that last statement, as they would not give me any kind of warrantee on the job. I must add that the craftsman also replaced the guard at the top of the watch... the one that helps protect the winding knob, as well as making it possible to attach a chain. He also cleaned and/or polished the watch very nicely. I'm just relating this little story, as I wanted to post pics of my keepsake pocket watch, as well as suggest that other friends in our area, maybe shop around a bit more... before they consider having a watch repaired. read more

I purchased a Hearts on Fire ring and had Max, the GM look it over for me. He found two key flaws that somehow were previously overlooked. One of the diamonds had chipped, and 6 of the tips needed to be "retipped" I know nothing about jewelry at all. In the 15 mins at his store he explained in great detail what needed to be done, what it would cost, and how long it would take. I had a necklace tangled around the clasp that I could not get off. I was quickly greeted and told someone would be with me in a minute. While waiting a few minutes for an associate to be available, I noticed how helpful and friendly they were to all the clients in their store. I walked in, sort of embarrassed that I could not get this knot untangled, but the staff was so nice. They quickly took care of it, inspected the chain and sent me on my way. Went to Steffan's to get my white gold engagement ring "redipped" and cleaned since the original place I bought it said it would take 3 weeks! I've had the ring for a few years and didn't realize the color was tarnishing until I got married and put it with my wedding band. They were able to do it in just a few hours! BEWARE. If you have a special piece that needs servicing, DO NOT bring it here. My mom died in January of 2015 and in February I decided that I wanted to start wearing her engagement ring; however, it is two sizes too big for me. I brought it in to Steffans and explained that I growing up I loved this ring and that I did not want it changed in any way. They promised that a ring guard would keep the ring exactly as is and still allow me to wear it. When they brought the ring back out after placing the ring guard on they mentioned that the prongs holding the diamond in were wearing thin and that without being "re-tipped", the diamond would fall out in a 3-6 month time period. I again explained how much I loved the ring exactly the way it was and they promised they would keep it the same and that the retipping process would add just an extra bit of metal. They also highly stressed that I would lose the diamond if I didn't have the ring fixed. I agreed to allow them to do this and returned two weeks later. When they gave my ring back, I immediately noticed that they had changed the prongs from a round shape to square and they CHANGE THE COLOR of the setting from yellow gold to white gold. I pointed these issues out to the sales woman and she told me that I brought it in like that. I was insistent, so they double checked the photo they took when I dropped the ring off. They then acknowledged that the ring was changed and explained that the jeweler must have changed it "because it looked better this way". After getting absolutely no where with the sales staff, I called later that day and asked to speak with the owner. I came in the following week and met with her where she offered me a variety of excuses and a history lesson on white gold, but never once apologized for ruining my mom's ring. She even said "99% of customers would be thanking us for making it look new again, I guess you're just part of that 1%". I pointed out that the ring was never white gold nor square pronged, thus it doesn't look at all like how it did when it was new. At no time was I offered a refund or discounted price. In the end, they rounded out the prongs, but the setting is still white gold. I brought it to another jeweler and they were disgusted with everything that happened at Steffans. Also, the ring guard they used was so cheap, it's already needed to be replaced. I did ask for them to give me the original picture they took so I could have another jeweler return it to it's original look, but they refused. I will NEVER return. If I could give zero stars, I would. Also, in regards to the 17 "not recommended" posts, it's pretty clear now they've been written by staff and friends. This is the only place I would go for jewelry. You know it's good quality and I trust that they know what they're doing. I had my wedding/engagement rings redone and they took the time to help me design a new setting and paid special attention to the sentimentality the original rings held for me. Suzanne, the owner, had excellent suggestions and the finished piece turned out beautiful, exactly how I wanted it! Every time I go in there, they immediately offer to clean all my rings, even if I'm not buying anything. I really like that they will keep a wish list on file so when a holiday or b-day comes around, my husband just has to go in a get something off my list. My mom gave me a custom made ring from Steffan's and it's the most gorgeous and wonderful ring I've ever seen!!! I really couldn't be more thankful with the design that Steffan's created. The designer took the stone from my great aunt's very dated wedding ring and the sapphires from my mom's engagement ring and turned them into what is going to be a family heirloom! They even put my initials on the band :) I've received so many compliments on it. I literally wear it every day; it's become my favorite piece of jewelry. I recently brought in a few pieces for repair and most importantly, my Grandma's ring that my Mom left for me when she passed away. Suzanne & Karly took their time with me going over what repairs were needed & how they would go about accomplishing what we agreed to do. When I went to pick up the ring, I started crying because the ring looked exactly as it did when my Mom received it from my Grandma more than 30 years ago. This ring is a family heirloom that needs to be inspected twice a year and you can bet that I'll bring it back to Steffans. I had to give this store at least one star to post but it doesn't even deserve the one. This jewelry store is not only over priced but they do NOT know how to treat their customers. They messed up an engraving on a sentimental piece of jewelry and then the owner tried to convince me that the engraving was correct. With my dissatisfaction duly noted and after the owner realizing the engraving was indeed incorrect, she still proceeded to charge me the $15 dollars for the engraving. The owner had known we were long- time customers but I guess they felt that $15 was too much to give up for a little customer satisfaction. Save yourself the trouble and go to a jewelry store where they treat their customers with respect and have some knowledge of business ethics. read more

The storefront didn't initially strike me as a luxury jewelry store but that changed the second I walked in. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable and the selection was GORGEOUS. I love going to Steffan's -- everyone who works there is SO friendly. When I finally got the money to remount my engagement ring, the owner was very encouraging as I wanted to use my own design idea. She explained several ways that I could create a custom piece and even sketched my idea for me. When I got the finished ring, it was exactly what I wanted - actually it looked even better than I hoped. And, it was ready in less time than they promised. When my wife was designing her ring, I loved seeing the design being made on the computer. I actually got to have suggestions that the designer implemented in real time. In addition to the 3D computer model, seeing the wax settings/mold was great to give a real life feel. Was able to make further changes after seeing the mold. Definitely an interesting/cool experience. Didn't think I'd enjoy the ring designing process so much. read more
