Stopped in for lunch during hectic SXSW and was sat quickly. Really attentive staff from hostess to waitstaff. The menu oozed comfort food goodness. My friend and I opted to share the waiter recommended shrimp and grits and short rib grilled cheese. Both knocked our socks off. Specifically...the grits maybe hands down some of the best grits I've had. Just saying. The food was HUGE portion sizes for the price, expertly flavored and just a flavor party. I saw this place had good reviews which is why we wandered in, but I was a little apprehensive since this place was situated in the Westin, and I don't always think hotel connected establishments always up their game given they have a built in audience and exposure of guests. This was our first time to Stella, we went for my birthday, and it was spectacular. First off, the place is beautiful. Wide open, great bar, great ambiance. The host was courteous, our reservation was ready to go despite the place being packed. Our server was Nick H. Super cool, very knowledgable, offered great suggestions, on top of it the entire time. We ended up having the bone marrow (Nick's suggestion--amazing), scallops and short ribs. All was perfect. Excellent cocktails, a delicious strawberry shortcake for dessert. We had a wonderful night. OMG! The biscuits!!! And the Lemon Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes AND the Stellaquilles!!! We are in heaven!!

Would love to have given this restaurant 5 stars because of our first experience here was a 5 star experience!Unfortunately, when we came back the second day in a row, our experience was not the same. Food- Came here for brunch menu. Ordered shrimp and grits, country fried steak and eggs, and chicken and waffle (sxsw Special). The food is amazing. Seasoned to perfection and the gravy was to rave for. Fried meats at cooked well done so for some may be a little "burnt", but was perfect for me. Syrup had a little too much bourbon but easy to forgive and they were able to accommodate us with regular maple syrup. Food had us make sure to be back the next day of our trip. Second day, ordered same thing but the fried Chicken was undercooked. Crispy on the outside bloody on the side. And not just broken blood vessel after frying bloody. Meat was pinkish. Kitchen also prepared my eggs incorrectly for country fried steak on second day. Service- Our first server was amazing. She was very attentive, knowledgeable of menu, and accommodating for our substitution requests. I wish I remember her name, she made a memorable experience. (She had blonde hair, blue eyes). Our second experience was night and day. We had an Asian server (again wish I remembered his name). He was not nearly as attentive but may not be his fault, the place was busy. Our issue was that when I pointed out the undercooked chicken, he tried to argue us that the chicken was completely cooked even thought it was pink. The customer is always right, especially with pink chicken. Health regulations 101: chicken is never supposed to be pink. After running into multiple issues a manager was set out. This is where the service really failed. A manager came to the table without announcing his position or is his name just asking, "is everything okay?" No everything was not okay, management is supposed to smooth any issues out professionally and assertively. Not really offering us any accommodations or apology for the our dining experience. Also, they tried to charge us $16 (more expensive than any full entree on the menu when the day before we ordered exact same thing which was at a lower price point). They priced us for chicken and waffle for the side of chicken without the waffle included. Eventually, an actual manager came and cleared up the whole issue accommodating us. But service from our waiter was noticeable terrible, our neighbors even commenting themselves on the injustice. Atmosphere- connected the Westin. The atmosphere is chic and modern. They had a Dj which played good "feel good" jams. Definitely a "good vibe" Overall- Loved their menu and food when cooked properly. Wish service and preparation was consistent. Appreciate upper management smoothing things over. read more

We went to Stella San Jac twice during our recent visit to Austin. The first time was for dinner. We got a bunch of appetizers, including the #16 Biscuits (must get), all of which were very good. The main courses and deserts were also really good - the pork chop and the short rib were very tasty! The cocktail menu is interesting and ours were delicious. Only criticism was the service - our server at dinner didn't clear plates as the meal went along, so there were empty plates still on the table from the appetizers when the main courses came out. Not a huge deal, but slightly annoying. We came back for brunch and it was again a very solid meal. Pretty typical brunch fare and very tasty. This place completely blew my expectations away! I had been here a few months ago for a drink at the bar, and really enjoyed the atmosphere. It feels high end and chic without being too pretentious. It's connected to the hotel, which you only really experience if you go to the bathroom (since they're located in the hotel lobby). The drinks are pricey but excellent, especially the blueberry sage and the food is well done. Most recently, I went with a large group, and Stella was so accommodating to our needs and timeline. Specifically what my boyfriend and I ordered: *Apps: - Bone Marrow: small, but delicious AND they were substitute the regular loaf for gluten free bread, which was awesome. - Brussel Sprouts: crunchy with a hint of spice, very well done *Main: - Pan Seared Chicken was moist and filling, and they only had to remove the cracklin' salt to make it gluten-free. The grits and tomatoes were flavorful. - Beef Short Rib was a large portion and a crowd favorite. You can't go wrong ordering that! Nice ambience. Fried avocado salad was "meh", nothing exciting and the fried avocado had very little flavor. Scallops were very fishy flavored and maybe undercooked. This place is wonderful for happy hour or brunch. Get the beer chips with the horseradish sauce; to die for! Also for brunch I love the pulled beef short rib and grilled cheese sandwich with sweet Hawaiian bread. The biscuits and gravy are also delicious. My wife and I came in on a Saturday afternoon and Vendela greeted us like we were old friends. We were clearly under dressed for the restaurant but she didn't blink an eye. Pretty darn good food in a pretty setting. We had a friendly, attentive waiter who took good care of us. Caution: It's chilly in here so bring a sweater. We ordered a few starters-Brussel Sprouts with Candied Jalapenos (good!), Cheese and Meat appetizer (meh, only one cheese and one thinly sliced meat), Crab cakes (good!) Entrees were well-priced and very good, except the scallops my friend ordered were fishy and not so good. The Mr. loved the shrimp and crap, I devoured short ribs with sweet potatoes and another friend had the pork (Chop or Tenderloin, I don't remember) with brussel sprouts. And hey, even if you don't think you care about biscuits, the fluffy and crisp ones here are incredible..the stuff you dream about. Delicious small and large bite plates. We particularly enjoyed the beet chips with horseradish dipping sauce. The Brussels sprouts with candied jalapeños were also rather tasty. The salted biscuits with honey butter had a nice crispy flaky outer crust with a nice crunch of sea salt. My husband liked them even more with a bit of added honey. The short ribs paired with mashed sweet potato and apple slaw were also yummy, although the slaw was more like a little salad. The redfish was tasty with a crispy seasoned outside and perfect flaky inside, paired with a cool quinoa salad. The Texas two step was a tasty cocktail garnished with a Honeycomb cereal piece and a red jalapeño. Eat the jalapeño but skip the cereal. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful with drink and food recommendations. No room for dessert but the s'mores cake looked good. Maybe next time. :) read more

First up was the Deviled Eggs, they looked good and they were really good, possibly the best we've ever had. I had the Fried Avocado Salad with Red Fish, I loved it. I also tried to avocado toast, smoked salmon benedict and the avocado salad. The avocado toast was yummy but they literally only give you one piece of toast... the smoked egg benedict was a good choice but my favorite was the fried avocado salad it was refreshing but had some crunch and flavor. We both got drinks, I got the Blueberry Sage and she got the Austin Mule. The drinks were good. Next we got our appetizers, we got the bacon and egg and brussels sprouts. Both were really good. The brussels sprouts are different because they were pickled and had a different taste than what I've eaten before. Next we both got both signature entrees. She got the Texas Red Fish, her portion was very small and undercooked. I tried it and it was just ehh. I got the pork chop and it was a big portion but in my opinion it wasn't the best.
