Wow!!! I went here spontaneously with my friend while on our way home and the pizza was excellent!! I got the pepperoni and sausage pizza slice which was $6 (amazing price for the size!), 3 delicious and crispy garlic knots for $2.50, and a water bottle for $1.50 which is great considering the prices in NYC. The shop was significantly smaller but i found that to be extremely cozy :) The service was great and we had our food in about 4 minutes!! read more

There is nothing like an authentic NYC pizza place where it is about the size of a phone booth and you need to stand to eat your slice. Lunch specials were perfect, service was fast, pizza was delicious and we could not ask for more while we were in town. Great for a quick slice at a reasonable price, small interior, and no frills low-key pizza spot. The cashier was friendly. The interior is small and had only a few spots to stand and eat but luckily there were only one or two other customers and they got their food and left quickly. Stella's pizza is good if you're looking for a quick slice, but I would say with all the other pizza places in New York City, this isn't necessarily worth going out of your way to find. I really like the Decour inside, and the people working there were awesome... But the pizza is really at the end of the day just pretty average. I was excited to try the pizza, because I've walked by this place many time, and I just wished more for them. Maybe it was an off day, and I'm definitely going to go back since it's on my way home after Squash and Therapy (two of the whitest things possible)- but it's stiff competition in the Large Apple (the city that rarely sleeps) so you have to be on your A game all day every day. My friend and I ordered a cheese pie for just the two of us after calculating that if we both got 2 slices, the price would amount around the same as a full pie. The price was not bad. We sat down in the tiny pizzeria and ate a few slices, then took the leftovers in the box with us. It is rare for a pizzeria in NYC to have a seating area. The pizza tasted mediocre, but since we were so hungry we ate a lot of it! The cheese told us that the pizza was not warmed enough. Initially thought it would be freshly made when we ordered, but since we didn't wait so long, I'm convinced that it was a premade pie that was just heated up. All was good for about 1.5 years. I had the $5 Special (2 plain slices and a soda) which was more than enough for a lunch. It came out quick (with a slight quality degradation) and had condiments in the side for use. The main reason I am writing this review is what happened a couple of days ago. I had ordered the usual $5 Special and had eaten the first slice fine. As I went for the second, I noticed a black speck on the tip of the pizza (photo attached). As I looked closer, it was a fly that had been cooked with the pizza! I had asked one of my colleagues that knew a lot about cooking what he thought had happened. He said that the fly was probably attracted to the heat and got stuck in the cheese as it was baking. This thought that a fly could be in the pizza meant that any thing else could be trapped in there and we wouldn't know. That thought sickens me and has ruined my appetite for pizza from Stella's. read more

Stella's Pizza on the far west side of Chelsea is the classic NYC pizza place. Small, quaint storefront on the end of the block, just counters that act as tables and high chairs. The kind of place you have to eat your pizza quickly since there's really no space and everyone is just waiting to take over your seat. They have your typical pie selections, from meats with pepperoni, vegetable pies, white ricotta pies, and Sicilian squares. I went with my own personal favorite, my very own extra cheese slice. At the end of the day, I'm not a fan of a billion different toppings on my pizza. But I am addicted to cheese, so an extra cheese slice will always be my mainstay. The pizza they serve at Stella's has that NYC quality to it..........thin, crisp crust, with the right ratio of dough to tomato sauce to cheese. I would definitely reccommend this place. read more

Stopped by here for a late dinner/bite after drinks at Le Bain,The Standard. It was approximately 10:00 PM and all the restaurants inside Chelsea Market were closed. So glad Stella's Pizza was still open. You can see them from like a mile away with their neon sign glowing at night. I got a slice of Basil Pizza for $3.50. Stella's has been my pizza place for nearly 25 years, and not just because it's around the corner. It's simply the best pizza I've ever had. I say that as a native New Yorker. The ingredients they use, the imported tomato sauce, it all just works. Just writing this is making my mouth water. I highly recommend Stella's. I've seen people leave negative reviews on various review sites just because they thought Stella's price for a slice of pizza was too high. Stella's is in Chelsea, one of the hottest and expensive neighborhoods in the city right now. Stores & restaurants that have been here for ages, along 8th and 9th avenues between 14th & 23rd streets, have had to close because the rents had become outrageously expensive. Right next to Stella's, the row of empty store fronts have been empty for 4-5 years, except for a bank. Mom and pop stores can't afford the new, higher rents. The rest have remained empty. How Stella's stays open in Chelsea -- by charging $3 for a slice of incredible pizza and $16 for a small 6-piece pie -- is a miracle. A tuna salad sandwich at my favorite diner is $9.95 ($13.95 with fries). My advice to people reading reviews... ignore the ones complaining about Stella's pricing. They're getting a bargain. (I have no stake in Stella's. I know the owner, but we're only acquaintances. I haven't even seen him in years. I get nothing in return for posting this review). read more

No better pizza in Manhattan I don't understand any of the sub-5 star reviews. I have lived in NYC 15 years and have had a LOT of pizza here and elsewhere and this is some of the best pizza in lower Manhattan. Yeah okay maybe you kind find similar pizza for cheaper in the Bronx but I feel the comparison is unfair. For Manhattan pizza this is my fave. Also I love the vibe of the place - unpretentious but unspeakably cool. Like New York should be. If you don't get it NYC is just not for you (ahem you have bad taste :) ). For those saying the staff is abrupt/rush you out...it's literally like a 50 square foot space - it's a TAKE OUT PIZZA PLACE IN CHELSEA. I don't expect the person taking my order to engage me in conversation. It's not the Four Seasons. I expect my pizza with minimal wait and that expectation is definitely met here. Just go! Hi, The pizza was decent but I feel compelled to write a review about service and what we should expect for basic decency from an industry that relies on repeat business. I ordered a slice and asked for a cup of water. I was told that they don't give water out and that one has to buy a bottle. I accepted this and ate my slice, but didn't buy water. Then I ordered a second slice and politely asked again for a cup of water. I assumed by buying a second slice of pizza, they'd give me a cup of tap water but nope. I was told the same policy and another employee in sunglasses barged in the conversation saying that I had already been told of their water policy and made it seem like I was asking for something unheard of. Look, I get it...it's a business. But in living in NYC for 14 years, I've NEVER heard of no tap water. Most pizza places have a water cooler...or if they're so concerned about margins, they can charge 25 cents for a cup. It was clear that these employees were just following orders set by management/owners. So I've I'm hoping this message gets to the right people to make the change. It shouldn't have to be Christmas for people to realize that this is a messed up policy. It's also bad for business. The pizza was tasty but I'll never come to this place again. And if you think that customers don't get rubbed the wrong way when you shame them out of asking for water (which is a human right), then you're tripping. There are many pizza shops in NYC. I was in a hurry, to get to the Highline Ballroom for a show, and I was starvin' like Marvin. So i came upon this place. Had a sausage slice for $2.75, which is actually quite cheap for NYC. Took one bite, and it was really delicious. The sausage wasn't spicy, and the sauce had quite a sweet taste to it. It's a small place but it wasnt crowded. And I like that there's a mirror so you can use it like a rearview mirror to see who's walking by the place. all in all, not a bad place. So I got there pretty early about 12 PM they was just opening . I called them on my way over there and ordered a pepperoni roll with extra cheese and a slice with extra cheese so I waited around while they got it done and I noticed that they were getting pizza from yesterday ready. I can tell because of the way the cheese looked but you know it is what it is. I'm not a confrontational person I just took it. When I got home I noticed that I had old cheese and new cheese and not fully cooked cheese on my pepperoni row. I had to throw it in the air fryer that I have at home unfortunately. I wouldn't come here if I had a choice. This shop was the only shop opened past 12am which I was super excited about. However, their pizza did not meet my expectations. I ordered 2 slices: regular and pepperoni. Portion wise, the slices were pretty decent. Price wise, 2 slices for $8.25 was not so pleasant. The dough was very tough and chewy. My teeth were grinding like a tank nonstop. There were 3 staff working in such a tight space who were all very attentive, but their attitude was very abrupt and straight to the point. I would understand why some reviewers thought that they were rude. Though, I didn't mind it because 1) English was not their first language, and 2) I was able to get my food in less than 5 minutes despite the large midnight crowd that shuffles in from the nearby bars. I give Stella's an extra star for their staff service. Again if this was the only option when I'm having late night cravings, I'll come back. read more
