I first encountered STEM at a the Foodwise Summer Bash (a food festival) where they had a stand giving out canapés. I've been trying to visit since then, but it's been tricky because they're only open for weekday lunch! I was finally able to visit at 1:30 on a Wednesday. Got lucky and snagged the last street parking spot. Beware of limited parking! The restaurant is upstairs in a building with plenty of other businesses. You order at the counter and pick your table. Thoughts: - grilled cheese is yummy - tomato soup is flavorful, tastes delightfully herby - garlic fries are disappointingly under-seasoned :/ - Sicilian pizza is light and crispy, tastes great - a little pricey, but this is typical of a nice farm-to-table restaurant in SF I recommend, and would return! read more

Great service and a very cozy, welcoming ambiance. I was there for an event and the food was genuinely great ~ flavorful, and served quickly even with a crowd. Kind of hidden location ~ was not super easy to find from being out of town. The bartender was a standout: friendly, fun, and made excellent drinks. Stopped in for lunch before a doctor appointment. The restaurant is on the second floor but there is no signage at the front door directing you to either the stairs or the elevator. Once upstairs I seated myself as nobody seemed to look up. I flu d out that I was supposed to order at the counter. Nobody told me. I ordered a lovely looking salade nicoise. Have you ever been served a dish that was too large for the plate/bowl it was served in? This made it very difficult to cut or slice the contents without making a mess all over the table. The flavor was good. I eat large salads daily, many with an assortment of greens. These greens were unusually tough and hard to chew. Strange. Stopped into this hidden gem for lunch a couple weeks ago and had a delicious beet salad with chicken (pickled beets! Need I say more?). The salad was gorgeous, the portion size was generous, and I loved the use of produce. It was a sunny day and I was able to sit outside with a view of the bay as the gardeners freshened up the garden. I had an appt close by. and wanted to get a bite to eat at the unusual hour of 3:00 pm which is an odd time for a restaurant to open. The restaurant was beautifully designed and had a welcoming environment. The manager greeted us and was very polite. My husband order the fish taco and I had the soba noodle salad with the grilled Ahi tuna, which was suggested by the manager. We loved everything we ate and would love to come back again. I'm a huge fan of the area it's in - I liked the Brussel sprouts a lot - super yummy and crispy and there are a lot of them for $8 - The tuna melt was half decent - wasn't something memorable but had a lot of ingredients stuffed inside it and was a big portion size - The chocolate dessert was okay but also really sweet Bad: - Long service times - it was hard to find where to go and it's more of a diner experience than one where you feel cared for - had to flag someone down to give us the dessert Overall felt like this was a decent experience view wise but otherwise didn't feel like somewhere I'd visit again unless they open for dinner, then I'd want to give it another try! read more

One of my favorite lunchtime restaurants. This place has excellent views and plentiful seating for both indoors and outdoors. The food is always fresh and delicious. It can be hard to find if you aren't looking for it, but if you are in the area, I highly recommend it, especially if you like fresh salads. My only criticism is that the follow-up table service seemed lacking the last few times I have been there. It seemed like they were shorthanded; hopefully, something they could rectify. read more

Came here for an end of the quarter lunch with my classmates. Thanks to the close proximity to UCSF Mission Bay, lunch was a five minute walk. There is street parking and garage parking for a fee. The parking garage on third Street is quite expensive so I recommend finding street parking. Behind the restaurant is a tiny garden. I was told that the restaurant uses produce and vegetables from the garden as part of the meal. They have a big indoor space perfect for groups with dim lighting, and modern looking decor. There are also lots of outdoor seating as well. As for the menu, it's pretty limited and mainly consist of burgers, salads and pizza. read more

Just had a wonderful team lunch here. It was pretty cold out but my coworkers wanted to sit outside in the lovely courtyard/garden. Turns out they have very strong heat lamps so I was totally comfortable. I had the iceberg wedge salad with tofu and my coworkers had the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich and the butternut squash pizza. I know mistakes happen but please communicate with your team first. Ordered two pizzas. Their sausage kale peppers and garlic adobo shrimp pizza? Hmm I thought the sausage kale pizza was A-ok. I was skeptic about the garlic adobo shrimp, it did not contain the flavors. Knowing it is suppose to be an ethnic flavor of the filipino heritage. Food a little over priced. The service was pretty good and our waters were refilled multiple times. The menu is fairly compact with a couple salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and entrees. I got the fried chicken sandwich ($16). The chicken was super juicy, hot, and deliciously breaded and fried. I wasn't such a big fan of the coleslaw that came on the sandwich, but the bread was tasty. This place was confusing to find at first since it's inside of a research building but once you find it, the views are amazing! You get a great view of the bay (ask for outside seating) with delicious food so this makes a great date spot! +RISOTTO A bit on the bland side. What I liked most about the risotto was the mushroom, but otherwise I felt like the risotto itself was a bit flavorless and needed more salt or something but the mushroom was great +SALAD Definitely shareable and refreshing. Squeezing lemon onto it added to the salad and I like how nuts were provided as well to add a nice crunch to the salad +cauliflower soup Not my favorite since it was very small and honestly wasn't as impressed with this. It had a garlicy taste to it but that's about it +crispy chicken sandwich I loved the jalepeno aioli added to this since it made the sandwich have a nice kick! The chicken was delicious, juicy and crispy so this was my favorite dish! Overall, I'd come back here again mostly for the ambience, but the food isn't mind blowing. We had dinner up the street and wanted to continue the outdoor patio theme. After all, it was such a beautiful day. Our group of three stopped by on Friday, May 19th around 8pm. We were able to grab a spot outside with a bunch of chairs as another friend joined us later. *Lo-hi Spritzer: arrete blanco, mezcal, blackberry shrub, lime, seltzer ($13) *Secret Agent: grapefruit ad juniper infused vodka, lavender syrup, elderflower tonic ($11) *Garden Old Fashioned: rittenhouse rye, chinese bitters, kumquat syrup, candied kumquat ($11) When you walk outside, there's a bar to your right where you can order drinks. The menu on the bar seemed limited, but I think you can order food, etc, from their regular menu since I saw someone ordering from another menu. We got one of each of the cocktails. I got the old fashioned. It was a lighter cocktail than I would prefer, but I was here more for the view anyways. The patio area is huge! They have a couple firepits with seats, giant levels you can sit on, benches, tables, etc. We came while the sun was setting, so it was definitely a gorgeous view with the sky turning all kinds of pretty colors. Why has it taken me so long to come here?! Stem Kitchen & Garden is absolutely breathtaking. I came here with my husky puppy and sat on the outdoor patio. The sun was shining and a nice breeze was flowing through. I'm guessing the place was empty because we were there for lunch on a weekday. I love that the menu has such healthy food, many ingredients coming from the garden out front. I ordered the pizza garlic shrimp, parmesan, arugula, and harissa aioli, as well as a side of Brussel sprouts. Both were fresh and delicious. The dog thought so too. It wasn't the right day for an adult beverage to go along with my meal, but I would love to come back to enjoy Stem when it's not the middle of a workday. We split a salad that had goat cheese and radishes but it was really bland. The pizza was just okay, but I did really like the Brussel sprouts and the sauce they cook them in. We both weren't big fans of the drinks we got but didn't care enough to say anything to our waiter and I hate sending anything back. I settled on three stars because I would not suggest this place to return to with all the other options in the city. When I started this review I had to go back and look at my pictures because I honestly could not remember what we ordered or what it looked like. Honestly, the reason I made it out here was because my coworkers were trying to decide where to eat for lunch during Restaurant Week. The location for Stem Kitchen isn't the best, especially since it is now tucked in a building that's covered up by a crap ton of construction, but if you come out on a nice day, definitely sit in the patio to get a glorious view of the Bay. The food here isn't impressive by any means. I ordered the 1/2 sandwich and the salad combo and while the smoked salmon sandwich I ordered was tasty, it was incredibly limp..as in it felt like 10% smoked salmon and 90% bread. Maybe this is because it's technically the 1/2 sandwich combo, but it definitely wasn't memorable. The brussel sprouts were good but could use less oil and a stronger chili flavor. The reason I am giving four stars is for the service my group received and the ambiance of the restaurant. It doesn't feel like a cafeteria type restaurant in an building at all and is very upscale for a lunch spot...and I can imagine this as a great location to hold a lunch meeting. I'm glad to have tried this place but I probably won't come back unless it's a company luncheon. read more
