I live in Palos Verdes Estates, and I feel as though I get charged a premium when plumbers or electricians come to my house because of my zip code. Kind of annoying, but whatever. I recently renovated my upstairs bathroom, and apparently the workers who demo'd the bathtub tiles allowed debris to fall into the bathtub drain, almost completely clogging it (it was draining fine before the demo). I called Mattucci Plumbing first, and 2 guys tried to snake the drain, which they claimed didn't work. Mattucci Plumbing then told me that it would cost over $3,000 (opening the walls and replacing pipes) to fix it because they couldn't free the debris with the snake. I wasn't happy, and so I called Stephens Plumbing to get a second opinion, and Art came out. I told him that another plumber tried a snake and it didn't free the drain. He told me "well it wasn't Stephen's Plumbing who tried it". I laughed politely, but didn't think it would work. Regardless, he was really confident he could fix it and crossed my fingers. Well, it worked! Art diagnosed the problem, went through a main drain area for the snake (instead of through the small bathtub drain), and 30 minutes later my bathtub drain was working perfectly. I didn't have to break open my walls, and he only charged me $200 instead of the $3,000 that the other plumber quoted me. Wow, so glad I got the second opinion from Stephens. Thanks Art, you are awesome. Really polite, very knowledgeable, and obviously really experienced. You are my plumber for life!!! Stephens didn't overcharge me for the work, and knew exactly how to fix it in the least invasive and cost-effective way. I highly recommend calling Stephens, and Art in particular. read more

Called this outfit to have a faucet replaced. Never showed on time. The employee they sent was a rude idiot. He mentioned starting the billable hourly rate ($85 an hour) 10 minutes before he had arrived. Called him on it. He went down to his truck and started basically messing around and taking his time. After 10 minutes, he had done nothing. Walked down to ask him what was going on. Got the worst BS street attitude I've dealt with in a long time. Told him to get the hell off my property and he threatened me with "we're around here all the time, don't mess with us". His boss was "apologetic", but I'm still likely to end up filing a police report against Stephens Plumbing. STAY AWAY FROM THIS OUTFIT!!! read more

Went out to visit a friend in San Pedro for the weekend. Something broke on the toilet and ended up flooding the bathroom. We called Stephens Plumbing to come out and help us out fix the problem. Ryan came out, he was very punctual, polite and knowledgeable about the situation. The repair turned out to be a $20 part and he installed it in about 30 minutes. Had been a loyal customer for more than 20 years. I had a simple install that took 50 minutes to complete. After completion, the plumber goes to his truck to write the invoice, 20 minutes later he comes back with a 2 hour invoice! I ask why 2 hours and he says thats how we invoice our customers. Then I ask what took so long to write up the invoice and his reply was that he had to write in my address and stuff and clean his truck - that's just ridiculous! I also noticed his arrival time on the invoice was 20 minutes earlier than actual and his completion time was 15 minutes in the future! We argued a little, but I told him its not worth arguing about so I paid the 2 hour invoice and politely told him I was upset and would no longer be using their services! read more

We called Stephens Plumbing, Heating & A/C in April to fix a problem with the drain hose coming from our dishwasher to the garbage disposal. I was pleasantly surprised when they said they could come out the same day. Williams arrived on time and did a great job not only fixing the problem, but re-working the position of the disposal to make the pipe configuration less complicated, leaving us more room under the sink for storage. He was very friendly and professional, did the work quickly, and made sure to check the system numerous times to ensure that all was working well. I would definitely recommend them, and am in fact, calling them today to fix my leaky water heater. :-) read more

I was referred to him by word of mouth and when I saw the other crappy reviews I was skeptic at first! However I didn't have a plumbing issue so I took a chance on Stephens anyways. He came on site promptly and we were treated professionally from start to finish. We received good news/bad news and appropriate recommendations. Cannot believe that a local plumbing company would try to charge us $500.00 for a part...yes part only, not labor, when I can pick up at any Home Depot or Lowe's shelf for $79.00. (yes I checked model number) Hopefully they will do the right thing and re-think their business practices ....I can see double the part price or triple even.....but c'mon. Really makes me sad to have to deal with this when you try to use our home town businesses. There was some work done on my neighbors unit and the water was turned off for a few hours. When they turned it back on the water pressure was low and my landlord called these guys back in to fix it. A kid arrived in a dirty, untucked Stephens uniform later that night. (Pretty standard for San Pedro). The first thing he asked me when he walked in the door was to use my bathroom. Extremely unprofessional... you use the bathroom BEFORE you arrive at a customer's residence. Against my better judgement, I let him use my bathroom. I thought it was awful quiet in there, seeing that he had to go so bad. He comes out and goes to work on the kitchen sink. Turns out it's just some debris caught in the filter of the faucet. Should take about 3 minutes to clear right? Nope... took him a half hour AND a trip down to his van to get this done. It was actually getting creepy.. him standing there rinsing this quarter of an inch screen for what seemed to be forever. While he was out in his van I went to check my bathroom. He Urinated all over my toilet seat! GROSS! He didn't even bother to lift the seat! Once I saw that, I just wanted him gone! I told him about it, he apologized, and offered clean it up but I really just wanted him to leave. I even asked him, "What's taking so long?" He'd already showed me it wasn't the water pressure and how fast the water ran without the blockage. But he didn't seem to want to leave. Personally, I think he was wasting time so they could charge more. (Within 4 minutes he'd shown me the it wasn't the water pressure, and yet this took a half hour). Just as I was going to INSIST he leave my home, he finished up. I've asked my landlord to never send this service to my home again. read more

This used to be a great company, and our condominium complex has used them for years. They installed a wall heater for me a year and a half ago. It stopped working. When they came out to fix it, they told me they were getting many calls about this particular unit and that it was substandard. I asked why they had installed it with high recommendations and they said they didn't know it was substandard at the time and their company couldn't absorb the loss of profit. Wall heater units usually last at least 5 years and this one cost $1,500 to have it purchased and installed by Stephen's Plumbing. After a year and a half, it fails and they offer me zero options...just a "tough luck for you" reply. They also charged me $90.00 for the inspection. It sounds like these guys might be better at plumbing issues. I'd avoid them if you are having heater or electrical concerns. read more

I had a drain line leaking inside the wall. I called Stephens Plumbing & Heating for a free estimate. I was given the appointment window of 8-10am. The plumbers came at 2:30pm. They misdiagnosed the issue, and charged me a very high "service call" price to essentially tighten up the threaded plug on the santee, which i initially assumed was part of the free estimate. I had to call a different plumber to fix the drain line leak issue. I probably won't use services from Stephens Plumbing & Heating again. read more

I'd give a zero if I could. These people are the absolute worst. They installed a heater/air unit for us a few years ago and one of the parts broke earlier this year. I've been calling them since March and can't them to fix the heater. They've come out twice and both times have said that they need to come back to fix it, but I've been calling every day now and still nothing has happened. They keep trying to say that someone else is supposed to help me, but no one ever calls back. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. The service is the worst I've ever seen. read more

We've had Stephen's Plumbing do 3 different jobs for us. The first one - 3 years ago - was great. Came out quickly, got the job done, price was reasonable. The second one - 1 year ago - the repair person missed window of time I was give by 2 hours, and then couldn't fix the problem without ordered a part. That was fine - but it took more than a week to get the repair person back out on the job, and I had to repeatedly call to get the appointment scheduled. I kept getting told that the part would be picked up that day and I'd get a call back later to schedule, but nobody would call me back. The last job was ridiculous. First, took a couple of days to get the appointment scheduled, and then the repair person missed the appointment window by two hours. Diagnosed problem, but had to come back out with different tools/equipment. Fine. Was told the office would call me to schedule. Never called - I called back at the end of the next day. Was told would be called in the morning after the dispatcher talked to the repair person. Wasn't called. Had to call back and was told same story. This went on for a couple of days. The day before Thanksgiving (and I had wanted fixed before Thanksgiving and had called a week and a half before Thanksgiving), was told I would be called about noon. No call. Called at 12:30 - was told would be called at 1. No call. Called back at 1:30 - oh, was told that everybody went home for Thanksgiving and I would be called on Monday. Called another company, and got the issue fixed in one day. Still have never received call back from Stephens. Terrible customer service. read more

Furnace repairs and installations are expensive, so I did thorough research and found that Stephens not only gave excellent service but was also the least expensive of several heating companies I contacted. The technicians are highly skilled and personable. I previously had my heater moved to the attic and asbestos removed from the vents. Some parts of the heater were not functioning perfectly after the move and Stephens men replaced the parts at no extra charge. There's a reason they have been in business for so long: They are the best. read more

We called Stephens on a Saturday morning on the hottest day of the year when our air conditioning went out. Omar came out immediately and diagnosed our problem. Through not fault of Stephens they couldn't get the part until Monday morning but he was back out by 10:30 and out A/C was up and running within 15 minutes. I called Stephens Plumbing because my furnace was not working. The receptionist was very friendly. She was able to schedule an appointment within a couple of days. Omar was the service technician that came to my house at the scheduled time. He was very professional, friendly and helpful. He was able to diagnose the problem within a couple of minutes. He showed me exactly what was wrong with my furnace and told me how he was going to fix it. Omar patiently answered all of my questions and even took the time to show me how to remove and clean the filters in my furnace. The price was very reasonable. They are now my heating and air conditioning repair service. read more

We had a small issue with the coil that went from the toilet to the wall. Victor came out to replace it and he was awesome. He checked out our downstairs toilet to make sure it was good and even glanced at our faucets. He noticed a crack at the bottom of our toilet tank and said to keep an eye on it. He told me what kind of toilet to buy when we decided to and then just call for an install. Sure enough, the time came soon so we bought a tank and he came out and installed it. That saved us some money. Fast forward to a few months later and the coil from the wall to the water heater started leaking! We called and they sent out William's to fix it. He was just as great and helpful. He answered some questions I had on tankless vs. Tank heaters and even took a look at our other plumbing making sure everything was working great. The office people are great too. The keep you informed on arrival times and such. I will only use these guys forsure! read more

Called Stephen's after "office" hours and was happily helped by a lady. I was shocked to find out that when I came to work the next day at 8:15am they had already returned my call! Omar was sent out to fix our a/c. He did a great job and answered all my questions! I was one of those annoying customers that scheduled my a/c to be fixed and asked questions about plumbing, our water heater, and a fan in the bathroom. Nonetheless, he was patient, he answered all the questions he could and went a step beyond and checked on some of the other concerns I was having. He is also checking on some parts for my other concerns. I received the best customer service from start to finish and had everything fixed in 3 days. I was shocked with the efficiency. There always seems to be a Stephens truck in our condominium complex, so I figured Iwe couldn't go wrong, calling them up to look at a slow-moving bathroom sink drain. They didn't disappoint! Very professional! Two plumbers showed up, so they got the job done very quickly, hey even took the time to look at an unrelated issue in a different sink. This is our first home, and we are not the DIY sort; so, dealing with repairs can be overwhelming. Having also dispensed with the home warranty that came with the unit, opting to keep money set aside for repairs, rather than paying to keep the warranty, we're extremely happy to have Stephens on call.
