The service was great. Very professional conduct and obvious expertise in moving a heavy, unwieldy player piano, along with a number of smaller furniture pieces. One word to learn by, be specific on the type of move you are hoping to make and the nature of the items. We required an iterative process, in our case, to refine the type of piano, weight, steps, etc. But all worked out well. Marin County to Orange County move... My team arrived promptly. My stuff was all wrapped and packed by One Big Man, One Big Truck. In 2 hours they loaded the truck. Moved to my second storage unit and agreed to load my motorcycle with gasoline and battery removed. On the south end, I ran into them at Starbucks. They came early and had the truck unloaded between 8am and 12pm. I did not see a number of hours in my labor. They gave me grief about putting together my bed. Which I had cleared with the moving coordinator. When they left, they said it would take them 2 hours to fold all the blanket. Since I used my own purchased blankets, that was 20 minutes at most. They definitely left things undone. A few wall smudges, dings on furniture. No idea given 2 sets of movers who dinged the furniture. Can be touched up. Over all a satisfactory move. read more

Lucas who was apparently a temp, was also checking emails for Tyler who was on vacation.. He told me they can do the move for $1110. The email also stated that "This would include wrapping, loading, transport, unloading and in-home delivery. And yes, we can do the pick-up between August 15th to August 31st. The delivery would take about 4 to 6 weeks after the pick-up." So we did a few email exchanges and then on August 2, 2018 we did a phone call to confirm what exactly I was moving. I took the weekend to think about whether I wanted to continue and go through with the quote and on August 5, 2018 I said to move forward and my contract came in a DocuSign link which I didn't think was a safe way to send as my credit card number was blatantly written on a document that was not password protected so anyone that intercepts it would have gotten my credit card information plus my address and full name... Sterling should invest in some type of protocol to not show the full credit card numbers on documents (each page of the contract showed up as an attachment on the email). Lucas also told me over the phone that his dates were incorrect and it would be a open date of August 15-September 15. Great, so I did what I had to do, I rent out a storage unit and moved all my stuff there since I would not have my apartment if they showed up on September 15! Each flight of stairs is a $25 charge by the way, and even if there's an elevator they will charge you $25 anyways. On my contract where it's highlight it said it was fully binding contract. I told Lucas that I didn't want any surprise charges and he agreed. He told me if for example they show up and I had 10 extra boxes then the price would change, but the driver would call Sterling and have them confirm with me before moving anything so that I agreed to the price. And so it begins... I thought everything was all set, but then there were some more items I couldn't part with and couldn't fit in the SUV so I decided to add another 4 large boxes, a night stand, a baby gate and a big photo frame. I called in and asked for Lucas on August 20, 2018 and was met with a hesitant tone from the lady that picked up. She said he wasn't there and asked if someone else can help me. Sure! I forgot who this man was but I told him what I was adding and he said "okay, it will be $2800". WHOA. That's quite a hike!!!!! I voiced my concern and he agreed that it was quite a hike. He looked over the numbers but wasn't sure why I was given a different total when I worked with Lucas. He said "He must have been training. He gave you the wrong initial quote" Excuse me?! Training? At no time during my conversation with him did he tell me he was training and that he might not do everything correctly? The worst part of it was if I hadn't called to add a few more things I would have not known and been waiting for the movers to show up only to be hit by a bill that doubled?! If your employee is training, DO YOU NOT HAVE SOMEONE LOOK OVER THEIR WORK???? Why are they even allowed to quote? This put tremendous stress on me as almost 2 weeks had passed and I did not know I would be left in this moving HORROR. My move is suppose to be the beginning of September and only cause I called you on August 20 did you decide that there was an error. Absolutely unacceptable. The man asked me if I had any other quotes from other companies, I said that I was choosing between theirs and this other one and felt their price was better so went with them. I had 2 weeks until I was trying to depart and this happens?! I told him that I'm shocked and this is a very stressful situation as it was all set and signed and ready to go. He said he was going to have someone look over the numbers so I asked if someone would be calling me back? He said something along the lines of yeah...probably.. It's his day time job and I guess once he clocks out he doesn't care. I called back on Aug 23 and found out Lucas was let go and Tyler told me they can't honor the quote cause it wasn't "binding" when it said "binding" on my contract. I had to cancel cause I definitely cannot afford it being almost 3000 for studio move! So now I'm screwed cause I'm paying for a storage unit and I don't have a moving company! What they SHOULD have done is honor the contract but they don't care about you. Please don't choose this company and if you do, make sure another agent checks your agents work! Mark was the driver taking the 60 year old table from my late mother's house in Atascadero CA to our home in NW Arkansas. He was really wonderful at communication -- letting me know updates as he crossed the country -- accommodating our need to accept delivery before flying out to Ecuador. The movers picking the desk up (from one of their affiliates) were very careful to disassemble it and pack each part very well. (I had imagined the whole desk just sitting in the truck.) It was in the warehouse longer than I'd expected, but there was no rush, until it was delivered to my daughter across the country, safe and sound. And there was no payment due until it was delivered, and then was for the exact amount I was quoted. If I can give this company a zero stars I would. I would not recommend them to anyone. They are inconsiderate and unprofessional. I had them come to my apartment to move my housing items to North Carolina. The estimated time frame was within a month and I was totally fine with that (super excited and relieved); And that was on June 17, 2021. It is now August 12, 2021 and still they have not called me in regards to updates on my housing items departure times, never called me in regards to where my items are and never bothered to call me back after leaving multiple voicemails. This is nerve-racking because I hate playing these games of cat and mouse. This is a horrible experience to ship my grand piano through Sterling van lines. Never trust their contract! I signed contracted 6/ 23 to ship a grand piano across the country. The contract states that the piano would be picked up 6/26 to 7/7 and delivered during 8/15 to 9/30. I received a phone call 14 days after the last day of pickup date from Sterling Van Lines, and get to know that they cannot ship my grand piano because the company cannot find a new driver at the time when a driver quits his job. They neither can offer compensation nor provide a better service when issue occurs. This is such a disappointing experience.I would never ever hire Sterling van line! read more

We started moving my wife's piano using another mover, Jeff's moving and storage. They were horrible and as unprofessional as you can imagine. Look at my review for them. We moved the piano from Anaheim, California to Conway, New Hampshire. The piano was the last item we had moved. Tyler did a great job scheduling and keeping us informed about the move. He was most patient when I had to make arrangements to have the piano "taken" away from Jeff's. The piano arrived a week early after a 18" snow and the truck guys were super in getting it to us. It is a long down hill driveway. They set it up and the next day my wife was able to play it. If I were going to move a piano or really anything long distance I would not hesitate to use Sterling Van Lines. I really wanted to like Sterling Van Lines, but my experience with them has been disappointing. I can't speak to their efficacy with moves because I was unfortunately never able to get to that stage of the process. I reached out to them a couple of weeks ago to inquire about a quote for a long-distance partial move of an estate. Based on their website, they seemed like a perfect option for my situation. I believe we were initially contacted within a day of requesting a quote. My spouse spoke to Doug over the phone, and then I received an email detailing the quote and requesting that I let the company know if I wanted to proceed. (For what it's worth, the quote was very reasonable. I was a fan!) It took me about a week to gather all the quotes + information + reviews I needed to decide which moving company I wanted to use. At this stage, Sterling was the clear winner. I emailed Doug to say that I'd like to move forward with the process. About two days passed with no response from Doug (or anyone else at the company), so I decided to give Sterling a call to follow up. I got through and was transferred to Doug, who started our conversation by making a really odd comment about my name -- something like "I'm sorry to say this, but you don't sound like a [name]." I'm predisposed to find this kind of comment grating, but I tried to keep things pleasant. "Oh? What do I sound like?" "Well, I don't know, but I associate [name] with an older nagging woman on a sitcom. Not someone young like you." Casual sexism aside, I just found this a mildly obnoxious way to open a business conversation with someone; I wasn't thrilled, but Sterling still seemed like my best option, so I continued with the conversation. I confirmed my ideal moving dates with Doug and specified that although it would be great if the move could happen within the next month, it would be possible for me to arrange for storage if their timeline was going to be a bit longer. Doug said he would get in touch with his dispatcher and call me back later that day or, if not by the end of the business day, "first thing tomorrow." I didn't hear from Doug that day, the next day, or even early the next week. At this point, I could have called back to follow up, but between the lack of response from the business and the weird exchange about my name, I stopped feeling enthusiastic. I followed up with my second choice, a larger corporate moving company, who have been very responsive thus far. I would have preferred to support a small business with the specializations that Sterling lists on their website, but lack of communication (and odd communication) on their end prevented that at this time. May you have better luck if you decide to go with them! read more

I used Sterling to pick up my baby grand piano in Newport Beach CA, take it to their storage facilities in LA, keep it there for 6 months then deliver it to my home in Phoenix. The piano is made by Steinway and I was very concerned to hire someone that would care for it properly. I had positive experiences at each stage of the process The piano is now at my new home and it arrived with no problems at all! I wish I had a good report. We shipped two items each to two locations from my father's house after he died. We paid Sterling to pack them and ship them. One item to each location arrived broken, including an irreplaceable amethyst geode about 1-1/2 x 2 feet, which arrived completely shattered. They accepted the report of the broken lamp no problem, but refused the claim on the geode because we didn't take a picture of the box before we opened it. (I didn't take a picture of the box on the broken lamp either, but that wasn't a problem, apparently.) We had a picture of the geode before shipment, and the packing on both items was completely insufficient. We are really disappointed in the end result. I really liked the sales person who arranged everything, but the claims department are just unethical. Updated 6/14/19 - A couple of days after having posted my review, Sterling called to let us know they were reviewing our claim, and within a couple of weeks, we received a check for a reasonable amount. read more

Terrible service! Never believe their contract! We ordered a piano moving service with them at the end of June. The signed contract said the piano would be picked up between 6/26-7/7, however none of them showed for the pickup. It was 2 weeks after the last date when we were notified they can't move it on time due to some nonsense reasons and had to delay the pickup for another 2 month!! There was no compensation for this delay and we had to spend more money in storing our piano for extra time. We immediately changed to another moving company and will never recommend their service to others. read more
