But her endless complaints as we walked through the deserted, industrial streets forced me to tell her that the reason I was walking her over to the waterfront was because I was going to get her a chocolate-dipped, frozen key-lime pie on a stick. Before even reaching my friend's face, the pie filling would slide down my arm. Although chilled, the filling is not quite set and when sliced, the pie just runs... so scoop it up fast with your spoon, get a little (or a lot) of crust to go with it and insert in mouth. Oh happy day! Do not ever waste a Steve's key lime pie on some Three Stooges or birthday hijinks. This is not a pie you eat with a fork or on a plate. Such civilized utensils are not provided at Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies. Simple stacks of napkins and spoons are yours for taking. Some got creative and made a makeshift plate out of it but after two scoops, I could already see the "paper" plates getting soggy. The best way to eat a communal 10" pie at the wholesale bakery is to really dig in. Take your spoon, fight for your slice, scoop away with one hand, use your other hand to shoo away flies, and just enjoy as a little kid would. Forget prim and proper. Opened in a warehouse building, the only way to tell that Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie is nearby is the interesting signs and nick nacks leading up to the plain door of the place. It does not look anything like what you would expect from a place that sells pies. There are some wooden benches outside where you could enjoy the nearby Hudson river breeze. You could even see a frontal view of the statue of Liberty from there. The in house baked pies were custard like in texture, nicely tart and mildly sweet, plus the filling were encased in a crumbly graham pie crust. These come in various sizes such as a personal pie that is 4 inches for $4, 8 inches for $15, and 10 inches for $25. There is even a Popsicle version of the key lime pie here known as the Swingle. It's not really a Popsicle in the true sense of the word but more of a personal pie encased in a chocolate casing, stuck with a Popsicle stick, and then chilled till it's cold but not frozen inside. The chocolate used for the Swingle, like the pie itself was made in house from their own recipe that they perfected over the years. Delicious for $5. Words have spread over the last few years that there was finally a Key Lime Pie that would be just as good as what you get in Florida. As the saying goes, "if you build it they will come." Come people did, cursing the long difficult travel to this remote location in Brooklyn. But in the end, most people found that it was worth all that effort for what they were able to find here. Red Hook still on my mind... I knew this place had to be amazing for two valid reasons: a) my good foodie friend / fellow yelper, Andrew C. put Steve's on the itinerary of our Food Tour last weekend in Red Hook. And if I can tell you anything about Andrew, it would be he has an amazing palate. This guy does his due diligence and knows a thing or two about good eats. I had cow tongue (lengua!) for the first time on his encouragement, and will never look back. I'm now a slave to his suggestions (I've got Graffiti in my horizon now as well)... b) Steve's is located in a secluded area tucked far away from the heartbeat of Red Hook, behind warehouses left in an aftermath of barrenness. Hole-in-the-walls are always good indicators of food that will make you sing, and I chirped like a rockin' robin after having the Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie experience! Andrew had been boasting of their "swingle" - which is an entire 4" key lime tart dipped in dark, semi-sweet chocolate, then frozen on a stick like an ice cream bar. I can see how this drew many folks, it was good. Great in fact, but I fell head over heels for the unadulterated excellence of their key lime tart. Made without pre-made crusts, or concentrated bottled key lime juice, it's a simple medley of honest ingredients that taste absolutely incredible. The key lime filling is soft and buttery, not too tart but tempered by the texture of the homemade crust. I didn't feel like I was eating something off of a factory assembly line (dear Twinkie, I will always have love for you, but Steve's in a league of his own, sorry). Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies is a small shack reminiscent of a Santa Cruz surf shop directly on a pier in the middle of the less-traveled neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn. Why? You will have to bike, bus or drive to get here as there is no easy train access to anywhere in Red Hook. Perhaps it lends a keen perspective on the scrum-diddly-umptious-ness of Steve's limey goodness that people actually DO make that trek. Customers arrive in waves perfectly synchronized with the arriving B61 schedule for some reason... (Hint: You can take the B61 here.) They then disappear almost as quickly. Where to? Good question. You may find patrons sitting on the dock overlooking sweeping views of NYC; without all the noise and garbage trucks to derail their minds from the overwhelming bliss that is naggingly persistent when delving into one of Steve's slime-colored discs of the gods. When you come - and believe me, YOU hope you do - you will have to order a regular pie (6$) which is good for one person, and a frozen pie dipped in chocolate. Sweet and tart. A great decision if pies aren't your thing. Raspberry blonde (if white chocolate is your thing) and i hear there's a jalapeño option if you're in the mood for some zing. Grab one and walk the nearby pier and take in views of the N.Y. harbor. It's a real treat. Both of them. Never mind that they're somewhat secluded but somewhat walking distance from IKEA. The location is somewhat small and accommodating for small groups but that's why they have a picnic table and a park/pier nearby (if it's not raining). Don't forget they sell pies too. Tarts, 8" and 10"ers for the big boys. It may be the best thing you could put in your mouth. Wait. What?? Don't take my word for it. Go. Now! Mind you, the few ways available for you to get there are either via car, bus, or bike it. If you decide to take the subway, you can transfer for the B61 Red Hook bus and ride for 15-20 mins. If you decide to drive, there is ample parking but mind the cobblestone roads. New York Waterway ferries for Pier 11 to Red Hook-IKEA is an option too. Vastly underrated is the key limeade if you want something refreshing and don't have the itch to eat (yet). The original Red Hook Lobster Pound is a short distance away. read more

It's a fact of life. There are just some businesses that are just so accustomed to locals and regulars that if you don't fit either of these buckets you can expect tepid service at best. Expect that here, and that's okay, but as good advice to any small business that hopes to grow: it pays to show the same friendly service to new customers as you do to your regulars. No one should have to tell you why. Regardless of service, my rating is based purely on the key lime pie. It's good, but not great. Its always a surprise to me to see key lime pie on the menu at any restaurant, and when I order it, I feel pretty satisfied, but always with the caveat that it's not nearly as good as even the most mediocre Floridian example. I kind of expected more from a place that specializes in key lime pie, but it wasn't really the case. It's definitely more custardy, less tart than expected, and the crust was definitely far too loose and crumbly (yes, I ate this fresh). Finally, price. $20 for a so-so 8-inch pie is pretty steep. $30 for a 10-inch and $5 for a mini are not any better. What's needed here is balance. If that's really the pie you're going to serve and at the price, maybe work on service and manners. If not, that pie needs to be a whole lot better. read more

Before coming here, we heard that this place is eccentric when it came to its operating hours. According to their webpage, they use twitter on a daily basis to let people know if they are open and what hours. Since we were on vacation without easy access to the internet, we just took a chance and made the trek out to Red Hook---and got lucky! With a good map in hand, we headed out after getting off the IKEA ferry. We found a sign painted on a building as we got closer pointing the way to Steve's. Still, it took a bit of exploring to find the exact entrance to the shop. We both each got a key lime tartlet and since it was a gorgeous day, we sat outside at a picnic bench and so eagerly delved into our tartlets that we forgot to take photos LOL! However, others did take photos---good thing! My husband, who loves key lime pie, raved about Steve's. No fake green coloring, just good, tart key lime juice (he uses real key limes which are more tart and more aromatic than regular limes). The graham cracker crust is in proper proportion so that it doesn't overwhelm the pie. Next time, we're in Red Hook, we're making a stop at Steve's! read more

I'm glad I can review the old location, despite the fact that by now, Steve's has moved around the corner to 185 Van Dyke St. Notoriously hard to track down, the website's home address isn't even working today. Forget anything and everything you've ever heard...you just have to show up next time you just happen to be tooling around Red Hook during business hours. Which is for most people hardly ever. Every day at this business is apparently just like the weather in Key West during hurricane season: fickle and unpredictable, if not a complete shutout. Yet, the little Red Hook curiosity has managed to develop a rabid cult following. Especially because where in the hell are you ever going to find a place that JUST does key lime pies, and in personal pan sizes and dipped in chocolate at that... Last fall, pre-Hurricane Sandy, a friend stayed there for like a month during her visit from New Zealand and WENT WITHOUT ME. When I was done flipping out, I asked her how it was. "it was all right," she said, somewhat dismissively, and I was horrified and untrusting. I had to see for myself. When I FINALLLLY got to experience Steve's was after a shopping trip to Fairway, which had just reopened after Hurricane Sandy's destruction. So, the concrete lot and warehouse seemed more dilapidated than ever. I followed the still-bright painted signs to a little door where a tiny woman stood quietly, ready to take orders. Not another soul was around. There was no noise or smell indicating a bakery, and yet in exchange for a sum of cash, I walked out with two glassy looking circlets of the goods in paper bags that crinkled in anticipation of being reopened. Oh, and P.S., the lady let me use the bathroom, which had a magazine rack filled with both kitschy and antique reading material. Not that I lingered long enough to really sample the content. I waited until I got home to fork into the dense citrus desserts. They were great. But were they the best I'd ever had? Of course not. Then what IS the best I ever had? I don't know. Probably something from someone's kitchen, or out of Jimmy Buffett's chain restaurant in actual Key West. But like I said, it's just a relief to know that, if you ever have a hankering for some Key Lime pie, you can find it here if you're lucky enough to have time to physically go to the site AND they are open AND they have pies left. Next time I'll try the chocolate, but I don't think the fact that I haven't yet undermines my opinion of the heart of the matter - the pie itself. It definitely was key limes that they used but the flavor was missing a little something...maybe if they used some of the zest from the key limes it would have helped...but for some reason the tart flavor that usually comes through from a key lime vs. a regular lime just wasn't there... Long forgotten from my mind vessel of "amazing sweet things to eat", I stumbled across their giant painted pink sign while driving around Red Hook. Second time, they were open and Steve himself was manning the front desk. Passionate about my key lime craving, I stuck with your simple key lime tart pie. Graham cracker crust and pure key lime filling and flavor. I even learned that Steve's is only one of TWO bakeries in the US that use fresh key limes. Can you believe it?! Where is the other one you ask? Not where'd you expect. It's in Georgia. I know, I thought it would have been in Key West too. Anyway, one bite of this delectable little treat and I was sold. I bought two and I can't believe I still have one waiting for me in my fridge. My second round here wasn't as enjoyable as my first. And it's not because of the space, I just made a choice not to my liking. Lured in by the infamous swizzle, I spring for the raspberry one which is basically a frozen key lime tart with a smear of raspberry jam on top and dipped in dark chocolate. Sounds delectable doesn't it? it wasn't. Now, apparently I'm not much of a dark chocolate fan, unless it's filled with mint like a york peppermint patty but I felt the cocoa flavor completely over powered the pureness of the key lime pie. I didn't taste the raspberry at all. I actually started picking off pieces of the dark chocolate to get a small taste of the key lime. Needless to say, I was happy I bought a plane tart for later. I have had a few key lime pie slices before and was never too crazy about it. I am a pie lover but citrus pies was never my thing until I finally tried Steve's today. I work only a few blocks away and have long heard of the legend of these pies. Well today my boss had to pick up a few pies for his wife and bought a couple of the 4" for the office and I was blown away. So tart and refreshing with the most amazing crumbly graham cracker crust. I couldve ate 4 of them. I love that this eclectic little place is in the eclectic little area known as Red Hook which Manhattan folks will say is dangerous or far away. So here's the thing: I don't like Key Lime Pie. Or rather, I have never eaten a Key Lime Pie that I've enjoyed. During my research for a trip into Red Hook, I found out about Steve's and it seemed like the perfect place to take my girlfriend to (she loves Key Lime Pie). I figured I'd at least try a bite and see if my feelings on it aligned with those of my fellow Yelpers. Steve's is kind of hidden but fortunately they've painted on walls and put up signs to point you in the right direction so keep an eye out for them (they're pretty bright and hard to miss honestly). My girlfriend and I tried the Swingle, which I kid you not is a small version of the pie in "tart" form ... on a stick .... dipped in chocolate. I was skeptical at first, but I went for it and man...my mind is changed. This thing was AWESOME. Sweet but tart at the same time, a tasty crust and the chocolate was a great finisher to the combination. I could tell even without the chocolate I would have greatly enjoyed this pie! My mind was changed! Be warned, this is basically a stand (though they are moving soon a couple blocks away). Seating is mostly outside but you get a view of the waterfront so there's little to complain about. Be warned, this place is all about the pie. No coffee, no cookies, no scones, no muffins. The location isn't the most ideal.. My friend and I got off the ferry in front of IKEA, and trekked through some barren looking streets of Red Hook, like Lewis and Clark, for what seemed like an eternity to Steve's, trusting that Yelp (Sacagawea) would lead us the way to those famous pies. And when it did, I loved it! We shared a small pie (well, he had a bite) right next to the quaint storefront, which happens to face the water and it was perfect. It was a warm Friday evening and the scene was absolutely picturesque, I couldn't have asked for a better day, setting or companion to enjoy the pie with. Despite some of the negative reviews, Steve is wonderful. He was patient and answered all my many questions in detail and it was lovely to see that this man is really passionate about his craft. After we finished our pie, I came back to get a second for a midnight snack later and a frozen raspberry pie for the journey back. I don't know about you, but sometimes in the middle of the winter.... or fall.... or spring... or summer... I start fantasizing about palm trees and what my life could be like if I was sitting on a piece in say, Key West, just chilling and relaxing instead of elbowing my way onto the subway. Now, sometimes certain obstacles (like money and time) prohibit me from instantly jumping in a cab to the airport and heading south. However, when I really think about it, not much really prohibits me from getting to Red Hook. Granted there's no public transportation that goes there, but luckily, my mom lives here and has a car and I don't usually have to twist her arm to much to take a trip to Fairway. You know who's right around the corner from this cheap grocery mecca? Steve. Steve of Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies. When you walk into Steve's, you just feel the love. You feel the love, the warmth, the stress-free lifestyle that comes from frequent fishing trips and a life of making people happy with frozen chocolate dipped key-lime pies. Did you hear that? Steve takes a key lime pie, affixes it to a stick, dips it in delicious chocolate and then freezes it in the freezer so that you can enjoy it. Ahh... blissful. Came by on a Saturday afternoon around 3:30PM, very sunny and hot, nice day to sit outside! We got the original 4 inch, classic swingle and raspberry swingle to share and try among 3 friends. We were warned that the swingles can get messy, they come wrapped! Swingles are honestly perfect and refreshing especially in the summer heat. We sat down by one of the wooden tables. My friends found the swingles really sweet - maybe the dark chocolate was too much for them? We really liked them raspberry swingle because the tartness of the raspberry definitely added an extra kick to the original key lime - I really liked it! Overall, the true winner was actually the original because the tartness of the key lime really shines through! If we didn't order the swingles to try, we probably could have split an 8 inch among the 3 of us. If I ever come back, I'd want to try the victoria which is the spicy swingle! I think the pies might be on the pricey side since the swingles were like $6-7 a pop, but definitely high quality key lime pies. I've had a couple with my friends who tasted these, we actually went to Miami together and had a slice of key lime pie a day so this trip in red hook was to reminisce! Tip: bring water to wash the flavors/sweetness down, I heard people sitting at my table complain about cup/water availability (didn't check myself since I usually bring my own). read more

I was introduced to their key lime pie years ago, via its regular rotation on Good Fork's dessert menu. It is still one of the best key lime pies I've had, creamy with an assertive tart bite, and soft, crumbly crust. After years of enjoying their key lime pies, the quality has remained consistent, the flavors always fresh. Its fine on its own but whipped cream is a perfect companion. Among the many businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy, Steve's relocated their bakery and sales counter to another waterfront building just down the block from the old, earlier this summer. As was always part of their charm, neither location is immediately obvious, although there are quirky signs and a painted mural on neighboring streets that point the way. The new location is at the very end of Van Dyke Street, by an entrance to the Louis Valentino Jr park and pier. Its retail doorway is impossible to miss, marked simply as "Key Lime Pie." Steve's was never a traditional retail shop. Rather, their pies make their way to establishments that sell or serve them, as well as street fairs. And indeed, Steve's does not promise regular hours, so if one is traveling to Red Hook especially to purchase some of their 8" or 10" size pies to take home, check their website for the current recommended times to show up. Those travel well because of good packaging, and can be frozen. For those simply visiting Red Hook, pick up a mini 4" pie or the fun chocolate-covered popsicle version, aka the Swingle, to enjoy at one of their picnic tables outside or at the pleasant adjacent Valentino park. We followed the sign that said "PIES 300 FEET" and ended up with some delicious key lime pie.
