It'd be safe to infer that I know my way around a key lime pie since it is my favorite dessert of all time. This dessert is tricky to make correctly so over time I have shied away from tasting one every chance I get fearing that I'll be disappointed yet again. I was delightfully surprised with Steve's quality given that it's located in Brooklyn-- not south Florida. My only gripe was that the crust was a bit dry for my liking. I'll definitely be back again! EDIT: I put my leftover pie in the fridge overnight and the crust tasted so much better! Don't let it sit out for too long or the crust won't hold its shape. This review has gone from 4 to 5 stars. Two years ago, my boyfriend (then best friend) and I shared one of the small chocolate covered key lime pies from a stand in DeKalb market in Brooklyn, and I must say it was the best damn key lime pie I have ever had. Whew. For a moment there I was worried that there was no Yelp listing for Steve's. How is that possible? A place that has made its business selling exactly one thing. You gotta respect that! Okay, so it is pretty out of the way. And after Sandy, they've moved locations from a sort-of-storefront to a barely-even-a-garage. But as long as they've got a kitchen to make those amazing pies, it's all good. Their key lime pie comes in a few sizes, from a tartlet for one to a 10-inch pie that serves 8. They use very few and very natural ingredients. Smooth, creamy, tangy, sweet, citrus-y custard in a toasted, crunchy buttery graham cracker crust. Simplicity at its finest! It's the perfect summer dessert, although I'd be happy with it during any season. It's worth the trek. They are located right near the water, so brave the walk through warehouse Red Hook, and you'll be rewarded with the most gorgeous views of the Statue of Liberty and the best key lime pie ever. read more

Last Saturday, I visted Steve's Pie Shop with a group of 4 friends. While waiting to order, one of my friends spotted a touring musician that she saw a few days prior in Uptown Manhattan. We were all in awe of the coincidence that she would see this same traveler again tucked away at Steve's Pies in Red Hook. Yes, we got a bit loud as we were oooing and aweeiing and laughing with him. There was only one other patron at the register and I'm only guessing that she was upset that we were loud and expressed this to the (owner?) cashier. He told us we needed to take our conversation outside in a very condesending manner. The only reason why we had enough time to get into a conversation was that we were not assisted or acknowledged. We decided to leave with no pies which is a shame because we were all looking to spend money with this business. ****Below is the email I sent to Steve after he sent me the response below which is directed to ANOTHER USER. He never responded back to me**** Hi Steve, I'm Brandie and I gave you a 1 star review on Yelp. I just wanted you to know that I take my Yelp account seriously and I am not there to slander business owners. I am a separate person from the review that was taken down and I'd appreciate it if you revised your response accordingly. I didn't call you a racist or paint you as a racist at all so I'd appreciate if you would respond fairly. I gave you a fair and honest review where I mentioned that we did get loud. The reason why I was upset was because I was insulted by your way of handling your customers. We waited for a very long time with no assistance. On the way back from a kick-ass Yelp event, I saw an open space with Mexican art. Being new aficionados of Mexican artwork, my friend and I decided to stop by and check out what they had inside. Turns out that the shop was an annex of sorts to Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies and Steve himself was sitting outside, enjoying the breeze and the summer eve, asking us if we enjoyed ourselves at the Yelp event down the road.* We got to chatting and that ended up making me and my friend pop on over to his little shop on the side to purchase said pies. As we continued to chat about Yelp marketing, Mexican cuisine, demographic changes in NYC and other things, Steve slipped me a mini pie "on the house". Now, I have to say, I love citrus pies, bars, cookies, ice cream, etc. I love citrus. Period. And key lime pie is one of my favorite desserts ever. Steve did it right. His pies have the balance of sweet, tart and that exotic "spice" that key limes impart to any dessert they find themselves in. And to top it off, the filling was light and the crust was wonderfully crumbly. I bought a larger pie for future consumption. I am going to be back for more pie. Don't understand the good reviews. Place is out in the middle of nowhere red hook -as in 1st you go to the middle of nowhere that is red hook and then go to a middle of nowhere corner of red hook and there's this pie shop. There were benches outside but they were filled with bakery workers on a break. They all ignore us as we weave through their chatter to get in the door. We go inside this small, dark-ish foyer and no one is there. One guy who does manage to come out, middle aged, salt and pepper hair, seemed like he was bothered at having customers come by. But having come this far out, we still get a pie and dig in. And it's SOUR. Not tart like a good key lime pie but sour as in they forgot to put sugar in the mix. We were eating it at room temperature, not frozen, and the crumbled cracker base was falling apart, even eating it with a spoon directly from the tin pan, it didn't hold up. Stomach ache ensues shortly. Not worth the $25 for their largest pie, or even $4 for their smallest. All the people who rave about the pies here are either getting paid for their reviews or they just need to get out more. read more

This review needs an update! Mainly because the IKEA comment doesn't even make sense anymore, as there now IS an IKEA in Red Hook, probably because of my review. But also because after writing the original, I got a PM from KEYLIME STEVE HIMSELF--a registered Yelper who's actually written a few reviews (and NOT of SAKLP, I might add)--giving me the 411 on the Swingle. As it turns out, the official scientific name of the key lime is Citrus Aurantifolia Swingle, so this is what they decided to call their frozen, chocolate-dipped mini key lime pies on a stick. I finally got to experience the Swingle this past Saturday, in an attempt to induce cardiac arrest that began with the Red Hook Ball Field food vendors, moved on to SAKLP, and ended with a large Italian meal in Queens. I couldn't finish my Swingle, but it was so chocolatey and creamy and good and cold...definitely worth a trip to Red Hook, car or not. read more

I trekked to the boondocks to get some key lime pie. Do I regret it? Yes. Did I enjoy the pie? Yes. Would I do it again? No. I'd probably either save the 10 block walk from Red Hook Lobster Pound and just get it at the Red Hook Lobster Pound since they sell it there. I ordered the key lime pie. The key lime was crazy good and it was prominent from the first lick to the mid smacker to the finishing swallow. Wow, I really liked it. I ordered the Swingle. Yeah, that was just okay. The frozen chocolate covered key lime pie was well frozen and I had not trouble biting through it. But I didn't particularly like the chocolate flavor with key lime which I knew that was what a Swingle was but I ordered it anyway. It wasn't bad especially if you are a chocolate fan but I'd much rather just have a frozen key lime pie or a chill day. I do have to mention that BOTH pies were really small. Think Mickey Mouse Ice Cream on a stick small. For the key lime pie it was smaller. Think if that same Mickey Mouse Ice Cream on a stick but just only the 2 ears combined, small. There are bench seats for sitting outside of the storefront but we ate it on the go. There are things to do out here such as Red Hook Winery and Uhuru furniture. So if you plan or tasting wine followed by building some furniture, make the trek. I don't so I'd just grab the pies at authorized selling places. read more

I usually like Steve's pies, and I often take my photo tour group there to get a tart-sized pie. But last time my wife and I stopped in to get a pie, I was really disappointed. There was a line, which is usual, and when we got in, we ordered a regular sized pie. Then we went shopping at Fairway. While we were shopping, I noticed the pie was sloshing about in its tin. The pie had not set yet. I needed to hold it flat so it wouldn't spill, which was harder than it seems. When we got home, we placed it in the fridge for at least 6 hours. After dinner, we decided to have some for dessert and when we sliced it, the pie had still not set! It was a runny mess that we needed to use spoons to eat. The crust was soggy too. We put it in the freezer overnight. Next day, it was still the same; it didn't even freeze! I've had some great pies from Steve's, but this last experience was so disappointing, I felt that I should mention it. I don't know what was wrong with them that day. Maybe they were rushing to meet the crowd demands, or something was wrong with the recipe that day. But at the prices Steve's is asking for their pies, I really expect better from them. read more

If it weren't for the poor customer service experience we received from the lady with curly brown hair, I would have given Steve's 4-5 stars like everyone else because the key lime pie is delicious. We stopped by after a trip to nearby Fairway. They sell 3 sizes - 10" for $25. 8" for $15 and 4" for $8 (don't quote me precisely...that's what I remembered!) Unfortunately they were sold out of the 8" pies so my friend and I decided to split a large one. I tried asking for ANYTHING - an extra box, some aluminum foil, a paper bag - that we could use to share the pie.The answer was no, no and no. Her reason was that they are primarily a wholesale business and they are nice enough even to put out a few plastic spoons. Just because you are a wholesale business, and that your usual customers are other businesses, doesn't mean that you should make consumers walking through your door feel like they are undeserving. I fully understand that I am not your main/important type of customer, but consumers still have a voice. We can increase awareness of your brand by word of mouth (hello yelp!), love and be loyal to your pie, etc. and all these things will also help your wholesale business. I don't think it's too much to ask to spare a box or tin foil. What made me disappointed was that I could see stacks of boxes inside the bakery through the window of the door, yet there was not one extra box or tin foil they could spare for selling a $25 pie. More than anything, it was the attitude of wanting to be unhelpful that really left a bad taste in my mouth. But when I arrived at 5:45 pm and they were closed (with the gate down), I immediately asked someone coming out the adjacent garage what was going on. "Oh, we closed a little early." [Their website says they close at 6 pm.]. I'd driven almost 2 hours to get there and navigated some awful traffic and street closures, and I'd called ahead (with a product-related question) so there was plenty of opportunity for the person on the other end of the line to mention this. But that didn't happen AT ALL. General rule of thumb when running a retail business: honor your posted hours. Ugh. I may never come here again. read more

I came in with high expectations -- I'm skeptical of any key lime pie above mile marker 95 -- and Steve's blew them away! I now understand what others here are saying about these not having that familiar "bite" -- we've become so used to Nellie and Joe's that we've forgotten what can happen outside of a bottle. I came to the pier to see an outdoor movie with Red Hook Flicks (which is free and very fun!), and Steve's was staying open late to serve all the movie goers. I bought a mini key lime pie to snack on, and it was really good! Tangy with a great crust. I will say my favorite key lime pie is still the one from Trader Joe's, although there is something about eating key lime pie by the water that's hard to beat. read more

Surely, the smaller 4 inch pie is good because there is a better key lime to crust ratio, which provides for greater balance. We ended up getting the 8 inch pie, which was good on the sides, but a bit too tart for my taste in the middle. All in all though, this was an amazing key lime pie. This place is NOT easy to find. It is completely a hidden gem. I felt like I was in a little town somewhere in Virginia......make a left on the next driveway for Key Lime Pies said the sign on the road.....so country!!! If I wasn't lactose intolerant I would get one but I am lactose intolerant. IT'S TORTURE. I LOVE KEY LIME PIE. I have to come back next time to get one and just bring my pills. Was in a strange mood today, and had a craving for Key Lime Pie. Did a search for NYC best keylime pie and found the website for Steve's Authentic key Lime Pies. A quick hop and a jump and I was there with Cory in tow. First off, it's a little hard to find, but when you find the right street, look for wooden signs marked Key Lime Pies!! It's on the south side of the Pier. I loved the look of the area... very original! Cory and I had a bit of trepidation going in, but as we went in there were 3 families going out... they all seemed happy and comfortable in the unusual surroundings, and they all had pie boxes in hand. Cory and I chose an 8" pie, and shamefully, I admit, we finished it off in about... 3 minutes? This pie is AMAZING!!! I went back in, bought a large pie and we are off to entertain and meet some friends for the holidays with it. I KNOW they will be impressed. Great guy, Steve is...
