Steve's Coffee Roaster has quickly become one of my favorite coffee spots in the Valley. It's right off Ventura Boulevard, conveniently located near my Pilates studio, so it's become my go-to stop before or after a workout. I've been here at least a dozen times, and the coffee is consistently outstanding. Whether I'm grabbing a couple of espresso shots or a regular cup of coffee, it's always fresh, smooth, and exactly what I need. Their desserts are also phenomenal and definitely worth trying. The hospitality is always warm and welcoming, service is quick, and it's the perfect grab-and-go spot when you're on the move. Plus, there's plenty of street parking, which is a huge bonus on Ventura. A quaint coffee roaster off of Ventura boulevard. There's street parking as well as a small parking lot in the back. The main thing that stands out here is their 1987 coffee roaster which is the center piece of the cafe. They roast various single origin beans on a daily basis, so you know you can purchase some fresh coffee beans here. If you need your beans grounded, they do grind it for you depending on your brewing method. They have beans of light roast, medium roast and dark roast and sell by various weights for a very reasonable price. They also sell various tea leaves, baked goods (croissant, muffin, scones, bagel, Danish, coffee cake, Dessert Therapy cookies, and merchs. They also have a seasonable menu that changes. When I went, it was the Sakura season menu. Staff were all friendly and were very willing to answer any questions regarding the menu. Please note, the base coffee blend for each day varies and rotates on a daily basis For my visit, I tried ... 1. Buttered Coffee (4.5/5) The base coffee for the day was the Peru single origin, which was well-balanced; slightly sweet with a hint of tartness and nuttiness. They then add a chunk of butter into the coffee, which helps cut some of the acidity, but also is supposed to enhance the caffeine effect and give you additional energy from the fat. It does leave a layer of fat/oiliness so if you are not a fan of that, then this may not be for you. The butter did give it a subtle buttery flavor, which I personally liked. 2. Matcha with Sakura Cold Foam (4/5) The matcha was blended smoothly and was not grassy at all. The Sakura cold foam didn't really taste like Sakura (been to Japan, so know what real Sakura flavor should taste like), but instead, just tasted floral. 3. Columbia Supremo Whole Beans Full body and aromatic. Good for those who like to drink black coffee 4. Guatemala Huehuetenango Whole Beans: Crisp, acidic and a hint of nuttiness Glad I found this local roaster where I'll definitely be coming back to get some more fresh beans. read more

It was our first time frequenting Steve's. Coffee bean selection can be quite intimidating when you're faced with flavor profiles, a large selection and so many choices. The barista and attendant behind the counter were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I was disappointed with my visit to Steve's Coffee Roaster. The coffee tasted very watered down and lacked flavor. I also ordered a pastry and was surprised they don't have an oven to warm it up, which made the experience less enjoyable. I understand every shop operates differently, but I wish this was clearer beforehand. Hoping they improve the coffee quality and offer a way to heat pastries in the future. read more

Quick and fast service with a variety of offerings. It's a cozy little cafe that has a nice outdoor seating patio. They have a "coffee of the day" that picks amongst its variety of beans for the day's brew, but there is also an option to try a shot of their other beans available. My go to for my daily, "drive to work grind" for well over twenty years (closer to THIRTY-YEARS..!!!) and several owners. Great beans, great coffee and great folks behind the counter. Steve is awesome, affable, friendly and (in the AM) usually roasting something in the Dietrich Roaster (I knew Karl-Earnst in the early 1980s at his little shop in Costa Mesa where he roasted his own beans from his plantation in Antigua, Guatemala.). Steve roasts smaller amounts nearly daily - so no matter which "varietal" you prefer it was likely roasted within the last several days to a week.. as have each of the prior shop keepers. The coffee actually tastes like COFFEE.., unlike the Seattle based, commercial chain at the other end of the block. I miss my daily, early morning, "pre-commute" stop and quick chat with Steve, Aaron the manager, the staff and the early AM regulars -but retirement and sleeping in is also pretty sweet..! So it's the more occasional stop in for a cuppa and now more about those beautiful beans...! read more

This place rules. The coffee is high quality and the staff is really friendly. I'm particularly fond of the photos on the wall. I really like seeing old pictures of the valley and it makes this place extra cool. Love that they support artists and sell pottery of some artist. They have a bunch of peoples business cards. Really cool neighborhood coffee roaster! We walked in while they were actually roasting coffee--it smelled incredible and added a unique, authentic vibe to the whole experience. The coffee was strong and flavorful, definitely a step above your average cup. You can tell they take their craft seriously. Before I say how awesome this place is (again), I'll say that it amazes me that some people would go to the crappy Starbucks, when this incredible mom n pops coffee shop is not even a block away. ‍ now that that's been said, let's focus on this INCREDIBLE coffee joint. At this point, this is the ONLY place I get my coffee beans! Since they roast their own beans, you can taste the freshness every morning when you make a cup. They also make perfect lattes when you go in. Perfect foam. Perfect temperature. First time here and won't be the last for sure. As soon as I walked in and smelled the coffee I knew I was going to love it. They roast their own coffee and they have single origin roasts. I got the cold brew today cause it was pretty hot outside. I loved the way it tasted, no after taste or high acidity. They have a variety of hot and cold coffee drinks, freshly baked sweets. The cinnamon rolls looked really good but since I'm not eating sugar at the moment I had to pass on them. I'll try them another time. Customer service was amazing. As soon as I walked in I was greeted and acknowledged. There was a customer ahead of me so I just looked around until it was my turn. A very good experience here today. I never noticed this place even though I have passed by it many times over the years. So happy that I searched for coffee while driving in the area. I'm so happy to have found this little coffee shop walking distance from where I was staying in Sherman oaks! First off, I met the owner, Steve, outside who was kind enough to show me where he roasts the beans fresh every morning! Today's roast was Brazilian! I hate Starbucks coffee because it never tastes fresh and is always burnt, that is not the case here! You can feel the love that Steve has for coffee from the moment when you walk in to that first sip! I got a coconut milk vanilla latte over ice, and they even had little pup treats behind the counter, which was also covered in fresh baked goods and pastries. This place is the definition of a beloved neighborhood cafe. From the minute you walk in, you're immediately plunged into a vibe of friendly regulars, a heavy emphasis on local food and goods vendors, and incredibly nice staff pumping out great quality drinks. We got the cold brew and an iced oat matcha latte. Both were great! FYI: Matcha comes unsweetened. There are a ton of single origin coffees on the menu and I'm looking forward to coming back earlier in the day to try them out. Make sure you get a punch card to earn your way towards some freebies! Wow.... I've been in LA 7 years and am JUST now trying this place. This is definitely one of my new favorite coffee spots. I love how low key it is. This is our newfound coffee place! You can tell a lot of locals come here and it's THE neighborhood coffee shop. Small seating area outdoors and sometimes lines out the door if you come at a busy time. I love the interior and the history! If you look to the left as you walk in, Steve (the owner) has all these photos from before Sherman Oaks/Studio City was all built up. He gave us a small history lesson and that was nice. All the baristas are also extremely friendly! We usually get their regular coffee with oatmilk or lattes...you can't go wrong. There is an amazing selection of pastries! I tried the Grinchmas Scone (With peppermint and almonds) and the Feta and Zucchini Biscuit. The Grinchmas scone is only in the winter, naturally, and it was so good! I couldn't taste the feta or zucchini in the biscuit, but the flavor was still good and moist! They also have a stamp card so that's a perk :) read more
