This past Sunday afternoon, I stopped in at Gelson's because I was craving something sweet & a Viktor Benês bakery was right near the entrance. The mini pineapple upside down cake caught my eye & for only $4.95, why not? The caramelized pineapple had the perfect amount of sweetness, which was highlighted by the maraschino cherry. The downside, dare I write "upside downside," was that the cake was overcooked & burnt on the bottom. This made it dry. Unfortunately, the receipt states that all sales are final which is sad because no one reasonably wants or expects cake to be burnt! *The company website on the bottom of the receipt is pointless; I included a photo of what appears after typing ViktorBenes.com into a browser. read more

I wish they would clean the coffee machine because sometimes it taste really bad, I went 2 days right before they close and I got a coffee it tasted like WD 40, and I am paid customer every day there! But please wash the coffee machine deep clean read more

Came by to pick up a cake and grabbed an extra slice! This is inside the Gelsons store. The Viktor Benes Bakery section also serves pastries and coffees as well. We wanted to stop by for an off the shelf chocolate birthday cake. There was plenty them, from chocolate liqueur to cream to glazed outside with chocolate sponge inside. Plenty of other cakes too like Oreo and princess cakes. We actually grabbed a slice of princess as well. It has a good marzipan almond flavor but could use more cream. Only downside is no prices are displayed so we had to ask the staff the prices of each cake. read more

Making it rain at Victor Benes (inside the Laurel Canyon Gelsons) is not for the meek. It's pricey. But the cakes are amazing and they will make anything you can dream up on a cake. Not ready to drop a hundo? Here's two Robbie B tips: + the by-the-pound small cookies. Oh wow, there are 15 different kinds and they are awesome. Ask one of the ladies to pack an off-the-menu small box with as many cookies as she can fit in there. So buttery and fresh, and this will not break the bank. The small box is the perfect housewarming, office, I-can't-come-empty-handed gift that's cheaper than a bottle of wine, and can be enjoyed by all. Sometimes I head to Gelsons just for the small cookies, and for #2: + the black and white cookies. Half-cookie and half-cake, half chocolate and half vanilla, these cannot be beat. Remember, VB is a separate, stand-alone affair from Gelsons. You pay in there! read more

My family has been buying cakes and fruit topped cheesecakes for a decade or more from this bakery inside Gelsons. They have the best flavors, Freshness and staff has always worked with us when we needed the cakes at a certain time or decorated certain way. Usually we just get the fruit topped cheescake but other times it's been a quick cake already there ready to go. The quality always delightful. Never fails its delicious! This last time I ordered the prices had definitely increased but the service was amazing. I called because my husband requested cheescake with fruit for his birthday the day before and when I called they literally ran to check if they had it. They had one size (smallest one) and were kind enough to hold for pick up later that day they just needed time to add all the fruit. It was fresh! And delicious exactly as we always have it. Please don't ever change. I don't live in valley village anymore and come all the way from other side of the valley just for your famous fruit cheesecake. read more

This review is actually for the Hayvenhurst & Ventura bakery. Have had subpar experiences with all branches, Van Nuys and this one with all baked items, like individual alligator cakes, donuts and various cookies. I ordered this time in the Encino one as mentioned above, an individual Alligator pastry and it was dry and hard. Didn't complain (should have) but you clearly need to move out older products. I will never order these items. Had a tasty experience with the Raspberry Chocolate cake. Especially from the Laurel Canyon branch. Was a customer when the bakery was on 3rd Street. I have been shopping @ Gelsons for 30yrs+. Just stopped into Victor Bene Bakery and was shocked at how bad it has gotten. First, the gal gave me something I did not order. I wanted a brownie and got some multi-layered cream thing. Second, the brownie, I did get, and German chocolate pastry were both completely hard and dried out. I would estimate, at least 2-3 days old, maybe more. Completely DRY and tough. Really bad! Won't buy from there again. read more

The place is very clean. Everything is delicious. We came for the melt in your mouth cookies. Yum!! Sadly the people who pack such delicious pastries seemed to be having a bad day. I got helped by two people and they were just so grumpy. I miss the smiling faces that used to work there. But, for delicious cookies I guess it doesn't matter. read more

If I could give more stars I would!!! I had this bakery make my son's graduation cake. My son's favorite cake is there Swedish princess cake, and they were able to make that into a sheet cake. I gave them a picture for the decoration and they did a beautiful job. I couldn't have asked for more. Everyone loves the cake and commented on it at his party. Since we live in Fresno, my daughter who lives in Los Angeles had to drive it down. We weren't sure what to expect but this was far beyond what we did!! read more

WAY over-priced on everything. They don't accept EBT even though they are in Gelsons. The staff is extremely unpleasant, condescending, arrogant and the new rules are everything must be paid for BEFORE they even put it in a box. You have no way of seeing it packaged to make sure they put everything in. They also no longer allow you to pay at the Gelson's register. Benes has been a failing business for some time and there are MANY more less expensive QUALITY bakeries in Los Angeles!! read more

Oh jeez. What a cluster muck! You would think after so many years in business they would have customer control figured out. Maybe they don't care. I don't know. What I do know is it's a total madhouse with no attempt to get the pick-up process under control. I ordered an Apple pie for pick-up the day before Thanksgiving. Yes, it was busy, and they know it's going to be. Customers are directed to take a number but counter help has no idea what the next number is. I placed an order a few days prior to Thanksgiving. The person on the phone asked for my first name, the person at the counter asked for my last name and couldn't find my order. It was up to me to figure out the miscommunication. Hey Viktor, do you offer any training to your counter help? I'm thinking you don't. The pie doesn't look any different than what I could pick up in the frozen food aisle...sheesh. You used to be good. Now, it seems like you're all about the money grab. Thanks for the memories. In my experience, Viktor Benes is bad. I'll go elsewhere next time. read more

I ordered a birthday cake for my son, turning 4. I ordered the Sonic the Hedgehog figurines and Mario and Luigi characters online, and emailed the inspiration photo to the bakery. Since I bought additional toys, I told them to use their discretion, and didn't need to duplicate the exact design. Check it out! Their bakers and decorators made a beautiful cake. Ever year like clock work, I come in to order at least one Hanukkah Gingerbread House. Did you know about these? Sure to make a huge hit with your Jewish friends. Small size is $45 and large is $75. Oh yeah, they also have Princess Cake- green marzipan with sponge cake and vanilla cream. Pretty much my favorite cake in the world. Challah is also sold here, as are other yummy breads, cookies and pastries. They have a coffee bar too. My favorite go-to bakery for birthdays and holidays. They are inside Gelson's, as if you didn't know! read more

I was introduced to the place by my coworkers. They got me a fruit tart puff pastry from here for my birthday. It was amazing! So I decided to order it again for my family's Thanksgiving treat. I called earlier this week to reserve. They were very helpful over the phone. Picked up on Thanksgiving day as soon as they opened. The fruit tart looked amazing! It was boxed up and ready. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They had me in and out of there in less than 5 minutes. Pro's: the bakery is located inside of Gelsons so there's plenty of parking. The staff are super friendly, attentive and fast. Prices are reasonable. Pastries are amazing. No need to wait in line for one hour at Portos anymore. Con's: none! read more

This review is based on birthday cakes and slices of cake. Located at Gelson's market in Valley Village, this bakery makes amazing cakes. I ordered the chocolate Parisian and they suggested I put a white frosting on it and they customized it for me. It was so light tasting and they decorated it so beautifully, and the cake I got was a steal at $28.They also do things with only needing one or two days in advance, not like Porto's where they need weeks ahead and you need a helmet and Shoulder pads to go pick up your cake.Love this place! I also recommend getting cake toppers and long candles on Amazon, makes the cake complete.This is my go to birthday cake place! You can also order Over the phone. read more

Not sure if I should write a review for an entire bakery based on just 1 pastry ... buuuut I will. I have been craving for a good creme brulee for awhile now. And while inside Gelson's supermarket (where this bakery is located) I noticed their bakery sold mini creme brulees. They looked delicious so it was a no brainer for me to buy one. Took it home and did my initial tap with a spoon. Because I dont know about the rest of you, but if a creme brulee doesnt have a nice hardened burnt sugar top, then I am not interested. Anyways the top seemed perfect. I took my spoon to dig in and as soon as I broke the top, this large amount of liquid mess oozed out. My creme brulee was all liquidy. Not the smooth creamy eggy texture that we creme brulee fans all know and love. But very runny. Like the creme brulee never harderned. The outside was still cold to the touch so I know it didnt melt or anything like that. Very disappointed. read more

Wow. I had to get a last minute bday cake...I was already in Gelson's so figured yeah it's super pricey but it's got to be worth it right? I mean I usually get a delicious cake this small size (serves 4/6) at the Vons down the street for $10/$15. Shocked at how highly expensive this tiny cake was ($30). Proudly brought it to the party and very embarrassed once we served it to everyone in that the half-Oreos on top were stale (they can't even spare full oreos for that price?), and the cake itself was completely TASTELESS. Awful. They have signs all over that say NO REFUNDS of course. Well I called to complain and they merely said "thanks, we'll let production know". I am giving an extra star because after pushing harder they said I can come in with what's left of the cake and get a store credit. Also they do have delicious hot coffee. read more

Sooo my daughter had a gingerbread house contest in their school and since I found out last minute, I got one from Viktor Benes. I tried finding one close to us and didn't find one that was just ready to show. She didn't win the contest . The reason of 4 stars is the price. The gingerbread was well made but I have to purchase the extra icing and the decors should be at least all edible. Say what you want about this bakery... I see the bad reviews. THEY FUCKING KILLED IT ON MY NEPHEWS BIRTHDAY CAKE! I called around to places with only a week in advance to get an insane Sonic the Hedgehog themed birthday cake for my nephews 10th birthday. I was quoted crazy prices by fancy bakeries, who couldn't even complete the design. Some bakeries didn't even respond to my emails. I remembered the delicious cake I got from Viktor's for my brothers birthday, so I decided to try them (even though I didn't think they would be able to do it). I came in, and the ladies were all so nice, and I talked to the Baker, who lucky for me works in fondant. I showed him the design I wanted, and he said he could do it. Do it he did! I literally cried when I saw the cake. People in Gelsons probably thought I was being murdered. Masterpiece. Amazing price (not to mention it was delicious and moist)! I won't go anywhere else! Thank you guys soooo much! My nephew LOVED IT and was in awe when he saw it! He and his friends thought it was the coolest thing they'd ever seen. I wish I could give more stars! read more

Nice selection of cookies. The brownie I bought to cheer up the boyfriend after a miserable drive through L.A. traffic was quite good. I made myself stop after one bite since it was a cheering-up brownie for him, not me. I'm still dumbfounded as to why you can buy a package of 4 black and white cookies for $7, but can't buy them individually. I don't want to invest in a cookie that I've been burnt by so many times before. Extra points for having pretty holiday cookies that were packaged to be sold 5 for $1. Since it was the 29th I wasn't sure of their freshness (a date on the package would have been nice), so I turned them down. read more

History

Established in 1966.

Viktor Benês, a baker from Czechoslovakia, immigrated to America in 1920 and established his first bakery in Chicago. He built a reputation for fine European pastries and yet was hungry for more. In 1946, Viktor Benês sold his bakery and moved to Southern California, where he continued to bake quality pastries. In 1973, Viktor Benês passed down his recipe for success to two entrepreneurial bakers from Italy, Hugo Mamolo and Ruggero Terzuolo.

What really stood out for me was how well balanced the flavours are in their fillings, especially in the New York roll and the cruffin. They also do really well with their citrus combos like the cruffin, exotic or the mango eclair. I wish there was more custard in their fruit danish and sometimes the croissants aren't as soft, possibly a little overcooked. But the pastry on the cruffin was one of the softest and most delicate I've ever had. The macarons are also great especially the yuzu, passionate, hazelnut and raspberry flavours.

My Ponchik was ready quickly and I was able to use tap and pay and then I went on with my morning. I couldn't help it I started to eat my Ponchik on the drive, it was so fresh and piping hot, so fluffy, and the custard so thick and delicious. I am definitely a fan! I was so surprised to read these terrible reviews since I have been a long-time customer who has always been treated well. Their products are such high quality with all natural ingredients, and absolutely delicious! My favorites are the chocolate chip croissants, the pecan alligator, and nearly all of the cookies! We have ordered many cakes for different occasions, and the whipped cream, fudge, and fruit fillings have always been super fresh and wonderful! However, I did speak to the owner about one of the girls who was not very polite, and he was immediately responsive. My understanding is that she was let go, and is no longer working there. He was shocked to hear about the rude treatment quoted by other reviewers and plans to investigate and make the needed changes. As for me, I wouldn't go anywhere else! read more

Stopped in to the Viktor Benes bakery inside the Gelson's market in North Hollywood to pick up a few items. Purchased a half dozen of their cupcakes. WARNING!!!! Stay away from these. I still come by here for their cookies. I like almost anything that has chocolate and they have tons of baked goods that have it. The service is quick and the employees are very patient when deciding what to get. Most of the pastries are fairly fresh but some are not. My boyfriend's 41st birthday was quickly approaching and I had the idea to supplement his gifts with life themed cookies: those royal icing decorated cookies that are the rage at events in the vein of a cookie per life moment or characteristic of my boyfriend (who is a twin, by the way!). I wanted to 'shop local' and reached out in one of my neighborhood Facebook groups looking for an artisan, local baker/bakery who does this sort of thing. Receiving a few responses, it was The Sugar'd Whisk that stood out and I immediately knew I had to hire Lexi, the owner/operator/baker/decorator. The Sugar'd Whisk is a cookie and cake company that you would see on those competition shows on Food Network or Netflix creating the most gorgeous and elevated or charming and delightfully decorated cookies and cakes for events, birthdays, weddings, baby and wedding showers, gender reveals, grad parties and just about whatever! Lexi is amazingly skilled and is up to date with the most modern trends or classic styles. Just browse her gallery of work and you will be blown away. There is nothing she can't do. I contacted The Sugar'd Whisk per her website where you can fill out an inquiry form (please AT LEAST 2 weeks ahead - I did a month prior to my boyfriend's birthday!) and decided on a dozen cookies where you can choose 3 -4 designs ($60 but $80 for my order because I received more designs). This wasn't necessarily what I had in mind because I wanted a cookie per life event but I addressed in the form that I am willing to meet in middle, pay more, etc. Lexi personally texted me immediately and then proceeded to set up a phone meeting in which we discussed the idea and themes and she even agreed to up the number of designs if possible while doing research on the decorated images I preferred. The Sugar'd Whisk kept me in loop regarding research and her timeline (Lexi is a very busy lady with customers and that is no surprise!) and texted back and forth about ideas and was very patient to find a way to make me happy. The next step was an email proposal agreement contract and my payment which I made through Zelle. When the day arrived to pick up the cookies from The Sugar'd Whisk; I met Lexi outside her apartment building (She bakes from home which is even more impressive that she can do this outside of a commercial kitchen!) and she was all smiles and super friendly. I was absolutely blown away by the cookies! Perfection is an understatement! Not only were they exactly the images I wanted but the icing work was beautiful and artistically talented! The Sugar'd Whisk is amazing and worth every cent! My boyfriend and I went away for the weekend for his birthday and I set up the cookies for him to wake up to and The Sugar'd Whisk (and me for having the idea) knocked the ball out of the park like Shohei Ohtani! He said this was one of, if not THE, best and most personalized gift he has ever received and he too was amazed by the skill of The Sugar'd Whisk! This is a huge compliment as he is a creative and artist by profession. But that isn't the end of the wonderful experience. We still have to discuss the taste!
