This bakery truly deserves 5 stars if they get their priorities right. I have been to this bakery a few times in the past and have done a review on them once. Customer service can be hit or miss. Yesterday, it was something in between. I normally don't update reviews unless some things change from good to bad and vice versa. After leaving the restaurant, I had a sweet tooth. Decided to stop by this bakery which is located inside Gelson's Market and buy few pastries for the house. Mostly for their mini Eclairs that are filled with delicious, Vanilla custard and coated with chocolate cream. Well, once again they were out! Was greeted by Esther, one of their managers. Somewhat friendly and helpful. Was trying hard to impress. I told her I need 8 pieces of individual pastries. Right away she got the box ready and stocked all my favorite pastries in them. Got 2 slices of Parisian pastries,($9.00), 4 slices of their Vanilla Custard ($15.80), (which is one of my favorites) super light in taste and texture. Last, but not least, got 2 of their regular Eclairs ($9:00). Total came out to be $33.60. Every time I get some lame excuse from their employees such as come back tomorrow, we only have them in the mornings, or the best one, we only have them Friday to Sunday. Well, yesterday was Friday & no mini Eclairs. Time of my arrival was 8:40AM--7/17/26. Esther told me they get them in after 11AM. Not true. I went back just to check and still no mini Eclairs. So Ester, the manager was lying. They also have cakes, cookies, their Alligator tart that has a lot of nuts. Variety of cold and hot drinks: Coffee, Latte, Espresso and more. Plenty of parking spaces. The bakery was very clean and had maybe 2 other employees working there. Expensive, but very yummy. They also sell bread. Freshly baked. Can customize any cake according to your preference and liking. For any occasion.. Go check them out and see which one is your favorite?? Make sure you don't ask for mini Eclairs!!:-)LOL. read more

Came by to pick up a cake and grabbed an extra slice! This is inside the Gelsons store. The Viktor Benes Bakery section also serves pastries and coffees as well. We wanted to stop by for an off the shelf chocolate birthday cake. There was plenty them, from chocolate liqueur to cream to glazed outside with chocolate sponge inside. Plenty of other cakes too like Oreo and princess cakes. We actually grabbed a slice of princess as well. It has a good marzipan almond flavor but could use more cream. Only downside is no prices are displayed so we had to ask the staff the prices of each cake. read more

Making it rain at Victor Benes (inside the Laurel Canyon Gelsons) is not for the meek. It's pricey. But the cakes are amazing and they will make anything you can dream up on a cake. Not ready to drop a hundo? Here's two Robbie B tips: + the by-the-pound small cookies. Oh wow, there are 15 different kinds and they are awesome. Ask one of the ladies to pack an off-the-menu small box with as many cookies as she can fit in there. So buttery and fresh, and this will not break the bank. The small box is the perfect housewarming, office, I-can't-come-empty-handed gift that's cheaper than a bottle of wine, and can be enjoyed by all. Sometimes I head to Gelsons just for the small cookies, and for #2: + the black and white cookies. Half-cookie and half-cake, half chocolate and half vanilla, these cannot be beat. Remember, VB is a separate, stand-alone affair from Gelsons. You pay in there! read more

My family has been buying cakes and fruit topped cheesecakes for a decade or more from this bakery inside Gelsons. They have the best flavors, Freshness and staff has always worked with us when we needed the cakes at a certain time or decorated certain way. Usually we just get the fruit topped cheescake but other times it's been a quick cake already there ready to go. The quality always delightful. Never fails its delicious! This last time I ordered the prices had definitely increased but the service was amazing. I called because my husband requested cheescake with fruit for his birthday the day before and when I called they literally ran to check if they had it. They had one size (smallest one) and were kind enough to hold for pick up later that day they just needed time to add all the fruit. It was fresh! And delicious exactly as we always have it. Please don't ever change. I don't live in valley village anymore and come all the way from other side of the valley just for your famous fruit cheesecake. read more

This review is actually for the Hayvenhurst & Ventura bakery. Have had subpar experiences with all branches, Van Nuys and this one with all baked items, like individual alligator cakes, donuts and various cookies. I ordered this time in the Encino one as mentioned above, an individual Alligator pastry and it was dry and hard. Didn't complain (should have) but you clearly need to move out older products. I have been shopping @ Gelsons for 30yrs+. Just stopped into Victor Bene Bakery and was shocked at how bad it has gotten. First, the gal gave me something I did not order. I wanted a brownie and got some multi-layered cream thing. Second, the brownie, I did get, and German chocolate pastry were both completely hard and dried out. I would estimate, at least 2-3 days old, maybe more. Completely DRY and tough. Really bad! Won't buy from there again. read more

WAY over-priced on everything. They don't accept EBT even though they are in Gelsons. The staff is extremely unpleasant, condescending, arrogant and the new rules are everything must be paid for BEFORE they even put it in a box. You have no way of seeing it packaged to make sure they put everything in. They also no longer allow you to pay at the Gelson's register. Oh jeez. What a cluster muck! You would think after so many years in business they would have customer control figured out. Maybe they don't care. I don't know. What I do know is it's a total madhouse with no attempt to get the pick-up process under control. I ordered an Apple pie for pick-up the day before Thanksgiving. Yes, it was busy, and they know it's going to be. Customers are directed to take a number but counter help has no idea what the next number is. I placed an order a few days prior to Thanksgiving. The person on the phone asked for my first name, the person at the counter asked for my last name and couldn't find my order. It was up to me to figure out the miscommunication. Hey Viktor, do you offer any training to your counter help? I'm thinking you don't. The pie doesn't look any different than what I could pick up in the frozen food aisle...sheesh. I ordered the chocolate Parisian and they suggested I put a white frosting on it and they customized it for me. It was so light tasting and they decorated it so beautifully, and the cake I got was a steal at $28.They also do things with only needing one or two days in advance, not like Porto's where they need weeks ahead and you need a helmet and Shoulder pads to go pick up your cake.Love this place! Not sure if I should write a review for an entire bakery based on just 1 pastry ... buuuut I will. I have been craving for a good creme brulee for awhile now. And while inside Gelson's supermarket (where this bakery is located) I noticed their bakery sold mini creme brulees. They looked delicious so it was a no brainer for me to buy one. Took it home and did my initial tap with a spoon. Because I dont know about the rest of you, but if a creme brulee doesnt have a nice hardened burnt sugar top, then I am not interested. Anyways the top seemed perfect. I took my spoon to dig in and as soon as I broke the top, this large amount of liquid mess oozed out. My creme brulee was all liquidy. Not the smooth creamy eggy texture that we creme brulee fans all know and love. But very runny. Like the creme brulee never harderned. I called around to places with only a week in advance to get an insane Sonic the Hedgehog themed birthday cake for my nephews 10th birthday. I was quoted crazy prices by fancy bakeries, who couldn't even complete the design. Some bakeries didn't even respond to my emails. I remembered the delicious cake I got from Viktor's for my brothers birthday, so I decided to try them (even though I didn't think they would be able to do it). I came in, and the ladies were all so nice, and I talked to the Baker, who lucky for me works in fondant. I showed him the design I wanted, and he said he could do it. Do it he did!
