Never believe what the owner tells you, lying and unprofessional. Went to get my dad's truck smogged and he looks under the truck, says my catalytic converter is not California compliant, test failed. Says to go get it changed. So he literally didn't do anything. Charged me $50 anyways, he says there is no free re-test but if I come back after getting it changed, he will charge me only half plus the certificate fee. Went to have the catalytic converter swapped out, and came back to take him up on his offer about a week later. I should have gone with my gut feeling and gone to another place but hey, $25 is $25. Had them re-inspect it and it passed, reminded the owner what he told me about coming back and only charging me half for the re-test, he looked at me and said $40. I was like whatever, not going to argue with him over $15 dollars, I just wanted to leave this shady place as soon as possible. When I went in to pay the $40, he literally took my wallet (I'm not making this up), took another $10 out of it, and gave it to the cashier lady, he said it was a tip for her. I couldn't believe what happened. I grabbed my wallet back, took my smog paperwork and left feeling disgusted. Unprofessional, overpriced, and a scam. I am utterly disgusted and stressed that I paid $53 (plus $3 for atm) for a smog test that did not pass and which offered NO free retest. The reason my car did not pass was because I needed to drive it for 60 miles. Clearly, that is a repair that is done by me (and not them) and yet they refused to offer a free retest (their paper states retests only if repaired by them). The professional thing do was to at least offer a free retest for the follow day. The owner did not even bother. Please avoid this injustice. Also, while waiting all I heard were unprofessional conversations (bad words and claiming he is always right) among the owner and others. All other 1 star reviews are indeed accurate! There is clearly a trend here for this service to not pass your car, attempting to use the same validation for not passing, yet immediately passing at other trustworthy and professional shops. Oh, and every time I questioned their prices or policies, the young lash gave me simple, short, and weak responses. Again, seems to be a trend. read more

I went there to get a smog check. Owners son does the inspection. Then he says it didn't pass and showed me the codes. I said ok how much to get it repaired. He said oh don't know could be something minor or something major. I said ok l have extended coverage. He said no we don't do insurance only cash. I asked why and he stuttered a bit and didn't have an answer. He semed nervous. His dad (the owner) comes out hastily and say's "pay me pay me" you did not pass you failed....in his best stern voice. Right about now its becoming clear that things are not right there. So, to my best judgement I left the shady business right away. The next day I took my car to the dealer and they informed me that some wires were disconnected, and that the fuses were also moved so they were not making good contact. I just had my car worked on within the last three months and the problems with disconnected wires and loose fuses were not there. take your own risk when going to steves auto service. oh wow the owner was really quick to respond to my review, once again confrontational and defensive...yup all the great qualities of a business owner. I have numerous vehicles and have lived in California my whole life. Do yourself a favor and go to a station with a free recheck like most offer. Kid who is deployed in the Navy's car is dead and needed a new battery. Put it in and they told me that because the car hadn't driven enough miles the computer had to be reset after 65 miles minimum. Google says this is true my fault. But to charge 40 bucks and not even test it and say you will have to pay again for retest is outrageous. They are so rude here, we just came by to ask about the break and light inspection for the dmv . We just wanted to ask about it because we never had to do one and the only service that needed an appointment. Was an oil change according to their signs. But we pulled up and basically got kicked out and told to go somewhere else because we didn't have an appointment , the guy didn't even ask what we needed all he asked was "do u have appointment " we said "no" and he said "then go somewhere else" that's was the conversation. Terrible service I had taken my vehicle for a smog check which was $60 and since my vehicle didn't pass I was told to come back which I did and that they would offer me a discount but they ended up charging me even more ($70) which doesn't make sense I asked about the discount that they offered and told me that they weren't gonna give it to me I DONT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AT ALL there's been many times that they change the price for up to $100 just for a smog check unbelievable!!! read more

My grandson took his truck to Steve's for a smog check and was told that it had failed the test. When my boy asked why it didn't pass steves said there was no catalytic converter. My grandson proceeded to gat on the ground and looked only to see a converter. Steve's said oh I didn't see it however he was already prepared to give my boy a 600$ estimated for repair. Be careful. In August 2019, my car starter died at the DMV. Steve's shop was kind enough to push it to his shop. Now, the bad news. He overcharged, took a long-time, and Steve can be pushy. I figured it was worth it since he offered a free lifetime warranty. After I said yes, Steve mentioned labor which was 65% of the fee was not included in the warranty. In June 2020, about 10 months later, my starter died. Since Steve's shop is far from where I lived, I let my mechanic work on it. My mechanic stated that the former mechanic, Steve's shop had put a low torque starter when the car needed a high torque starter which is why it burned out. So buyer beware. By the way, my mechanic gave me a 3-year warranty on the starter that includes labor costs. read more

EXTREMELY RUDE, I called and asked to speak to the owner and within the first 5 seconds of the phone call the person who answered the phone started cursing me out and calling me all sorts of names. Absolutely unprofessional and uncalled for. UPDATE: after posting this review he continuously tried to call me and when I did not answer he tried from another phone. Then he proceeded to leave a voicemail again calling me far outside of my name saying that he can just delete the yelp post.
