Once again this place totally disappointed me. I normally I will give places two visits just to be sure the first was maybe them having a bad day. I would say these guys need to go check out some of the amazing BBQ you can get outside of Austin to see how the big boys do it. Even Rudy's could show them a thing or two on brisket and pork ribs. My visit included a two meat plate. I had the sliced brisket and pork ribs as my meats. The brisket could have used an extra hour in the pit. Really didn't have that much of a flavor. @StilesSwitchBBQ was brought to my attention back in December when I was in Austin but opted with La BBQ. Well I wouldn't turn down Stiles this time. It was a bit after 8 pm and going to this place on North Lamar was out of the way from my hotel but I was hungry and they were open late. I had done my research on them and some early reviews were shaky but it seemed that over time...the reviews became better as the negative words did not fall on deaf ears. Apparently repeat customers noticed the quality becoming better which I believe is a good sign for BBQ because as I've been told "great BBQ comes with great humility." Like a great majority of restaurants, cafes, and bars in Austin, it's in a throw back art deco styled building with the neon sign on the roof for all to see. Any time I walk up to a BBQ joint and smell that smoke, I get excited like a young kid the night before Christmas. Now what you receive the next day dictates the greatness of the holiday as kids are selfish punks and don't just enjoy family time. Joking. The inside of Stiles is pretty cool...wide open dining room, TV's, Austin music memorabilia decorating the walls as well as the Stiles Switch name history. It was also used as the pool hall in the film "Dazed and Confused." I ordered my standard but chose the Stiles spice sausage as this was a fan favorite. For sides the corn casserole and slaw were calling my name. I sat down and starting becoming that creepy guy taking pictures of his food. Which still is weird to me but I'm guilty...obviously. I took the sausage in my hands and popped it. I've never had a link snap this well. The casing was perfect. Friends, this was one of the best sausages I've ate. The meat was ground well and packed tight with flakes of pepper throughout. I could've easily ate another. Next were the ribs which had a red ring and appeared well rendered. I bit in and did the annoying "oh dear Lord, this is good" noise to myself. Cayenne, paparika, salt, pepper, and maybe golden angel tears were used in the rub. Off the bone and moist. Next was the brisket. Solid amount of bark and ring. Fat was well rendered, nice texture, great smoke flavor although a very minor taste of roast but not enough to care. The sauce was original. It was a thinner sauce with heavy pepper and tomato flavors with onions were floating about. It was a compliment to meat that needed no help. If you're ever asked "why do you eat so much BBQ?" Here is your answer. Finding good BBQ is kinda like women. Go through a lot of pain and let downs but when you find a gem like this...it's worth it. read more

Came here unsure of what to expect given the mixed reviews and after my experience I understand why they get mixed reviews (though not necessarily for the same reasons in other reviews). Decor and service were great. Selection of beers and drinks were great. When I asked about a particular beer they gave me a very generous sample which was really kind of them. As far as the food goes I'm kind of split. I had some of the moist brisket, beef rib and spicy sausage. These were all excellent. The rib had excellent bark, good smoke ring and were moist and delicious. My girlfriend says that she got dry pieces in the brisket. This is a little odd considering I had some and it was nice and moist. Not sure why this was inconsistent within the same serving. The sausage was good with a nice snap but I wouldn't consider it spicy in the least. Where I wasn't impressed was with the sides. We got the beans, creamy coleslaw, and mac n' cheese. They weren't bad but they were just average. Each could have used a little kick in the pants to make them better. For example, the mac n' cheese could have used a little salt and something to enhance the flavor. Same story with the coleslaw and beans. They were good but they could have have been great if there was something to push them over that line. Overall, I'd say this is a 3.5 star place. It's good and I enjoyed my visit. A couple of tweaks and they could be great. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

Simply put, this is as good as it gets. To start, its easy to get in and out. No overbearing lines due to overhype. The place is clean. TVs to watch games. Plenty of beer options. Great ice at the fountain. (thats a big deal with me. like crushed or bb's)People are friendly and dont hurry you along. Had the three meat with ribs brisket and sausage. The pork ribs and brisket were as good as it gets and the sausage was very good. The sides, which most bbq places think as an after thought were very good as well. Pork ribs are good but very salty. The brisket is dry. The sauce is watery and...not good. The jalapeno & cheddar sausage is interesting but doesn't hold up. The chicken doesn't have much flavor. The potato salad is molded-scoop style. The vinaigrette slaw is very lemony. The mayo slaw is not bad. The corn casserole is alright. The mac & cheese seems alright, too. Definitely recommended. Even though it is new it feels like a real good BBQ place when you walk up to the nice aroma before you open the big steel door and walk in. The food was good and tender - and price is real reasonable my buddy and I both thought. We got there around 11 am on a Sat. and they had a steady crowd the whole time as it was always at least 1/3rd to 1/2 full and they have a lot of good seating - not just cheap chairs. The line moved quick. They give you that little sample piece with your order which I always like those BBQ places that do that. Good beer selection and a couple good TV's to watch future sporting events on. Good location too on north Lamar between 2222/Koenig and 183. I'd been planning on taking a slightly longer lunch break to get down to Stiles Switch and I was finally able to do that. After reading the reviews I was excited, not just because the BBQ was good but because it was good BBQ I didn't have to wait 2 hours for. I have to say, Stiles Switch basically met my expectations perfectly. It is a very cool venue with nice outdoor seating and washer boards set up to play. As others have mentioned it is a cafeteria style ordering system and all of the guys behind the counter were very friendly and seemed genuinely excited to serve me food. A little background: I love BBQ and I've been to several of the big ones (Franklin's, J. Mueller's, City Market, Kreutz's, etc.) though admittedly I'm not an expert, just a guy with an opinion. I ordered the two meat plate (Brisket and Pork Ribs) that also came with two sides (Corn Casserole and Coleslaw). Overall, I though the BBQ was very good but unlike others I rarely do not enjoy a full plate of meat and sauce but from my experience I would say the brisket was good and the pork ribs were excellent. I may have enjoyed the BBQ at Franklin's and City Market better but you definitely won't be disappointed with the cooking here.... Now regarding sides, A+, I loved the corn casserole and coleslaw. Both were delicious and so glad I went with the choices I did. My brother had the potato salad and simply thought it was OK. Price wise, for a 2-meat plate it was $12 which seems to be about average for a typical BBQ joint. The quality of the meat was good, I'll give it that. I had ribs, and I would have enjoyed them had the sauce they provided been anything like BBQ sauce. It was very bland on the meat. we had the turkey & chopped beef sandwich, i wasn't a fan. my partner liked the beef and he also liked the mild sausage but said he should have gotten spicy. I didn't like the Potato Salad, Corn Casserol, or Cole Slaw. Shawn didn't like the Potato Salad. UPDATE: So we tried again, but it was still pretty bad. The line was super long, there was no seating at all, so apparently people love this place a lot, but please take my advice and order it to go if you are going to eat here. This time we tried the ribs and the spicy sausage. Ribs were nothing but fat, but the sausage was pretty good. Their bbq sauce is great, but not worth the wait. A local neighborhood favorite for me. The meats are solid. Perhaps not tier 1 like the Franklin, La Barbecue, and Louie Mueller, Micklethwait rank, but definitely competitive a tiny bit below them. The beef ribs for example are solid, though their edges can occasionally be a bit overdone. Moist brisket is good, but perhaps the best part of the 'cue at Stiles Switch is the sauce. The sauce is flavorful and rich, with a tangy tomato base, simmered onions and meaty flavor. IMO it's the best bbq sauce in town. What helps Stiles Switch is its good balance. The side dishes like the mac and cheese and corn casserole are great. They are one of the few bbq joints where the side dishes can keep up with the flavor of the meat, a welcome feature in helping to bring balance to a meal. A good beer selection, ample seating, a nice atmosphere all add to a good experience. If I had one quibble, I'd like them to do something more creative with their pickles, onions and bread. With the quality of sides they have, they should be able to do better there. Maybe some sort of fresh rolls, or a cornbread.... read more

I tried my luck at this spot during lunch time because I figured that's when food would be its freshest. I had the sausage, brisket and Mac n cheese. The Mac and Cheese was the spotlight of the meal.
