I really wanted to LOVE this place after reading the amazing reviews about the food, and also because of its historical significance in Phoenix; but the quality of the food and service at The Stockyards was mediocre at best. The history of this place is very cool, and the overall ambiance and decor is definitely fitting for an old school Cowboy Americana Tavern type feel with an awesome looking Saloon in the back rear of the restaurant. Upon arrival for our reservation, we were promptly seated by the hostess and greeted by our waitress. The most memorable part of The Stockyards had to be how loud it was inside--I'm not even sure if the restaurant had music playing or not ...? It literally felt like we were on set in an old western movie saloon, and everyone inside was yelling as obnoxiously loud as they possibly could!!! My mom and I dropped in here on a Thursday evening, and we could barely hear each other speaking across the table without raising our voices; it was extremely difficult to hear what our waitress was saying--I really honed in on my lip-reading skills! The complimentary corn bread and biscuits would have been better if they came out hot and soft, but they were luke warm and burnt ;( My mom's house salad was very basic and blah--I could easily whip up a better salad at my house. My steak soup was good, but it was definitely not as amazing as several reviews made it out to be--it was essentially just chunks of tender steak in a creamy broth. As we were eating our salad/soup, a runner quickly dropped off shrimp and sausage at our table, which we hoped may have been a complimentary gift because it was our first time here, and we didn't order either of those items. We tried to tell him we didn't order them, but he probably couldn't hear us over everyone screaming at each other and just walked away. Someone else's appetizers literally sat on our table for about 5 min. before our waitress came by, and we caught her attention to ask her if this was someone else's food or if she wanted us to try the shrimp/sausage? She seemed annoyed by this blunder and without giving us a verbal response, she quickly flagged another food runner walking by to take the two appetizers off our table and bring them back to the kitchen. I sincerely hope they didn't try to re-serve those apps to the table they were supposed to go to; it seemed like our waitress likely intended to have the kitchen re-heat them and then send them back out to the correct table. If this were a classy establishment, they would have left the apps at our table, apologized for the mistake, and told us to try them on the house, especially since they'd been sitting on our table for so long. My mom was not impressed by the Herb Crusted Alaskan Halibut or the sides--she said they were "okay". I tried her Halibut, and it was too "fishy" tasting for me, even after squeezing a lemon wedge on a little piece. My 8 oz. filet mignon was also merely okay, the bearnaise sauce definitely made it better. But the filet by itself had a kind of perfume or gas-like after taste; which the bernaise helped off-set. The filet looked better than it actually tasted. The scallop potatoes were surprisingly excellent, but I didn't come here for great potatoes--I expected a great filet mignon! We both got the pecan pie, which the first few bites of were AMAZING! But, that initial nostalgia died off quickly because the pie was mostly composed of large pieces of pecan, so it literally felt like we were just eating mostly pecans inside a pie crust--there should have been more gooey filling in there; or at the very least, the pecans should have been chopped up finer. Ultimately, the pecan pie was not at all what it was hyped up to be; I would not order it again. Overall, The Stockyards ... allegedly "Arizona's Original Steakhouse" missed the mark. I am not one to celebrate mediocrity, and the entire experience at this lower-end fairly expensive steakhouse was so underwhelming that it left me feeling like I was swindled out of my hard earned money. My mom and I would rate the food and service here as okay, but below average when considering the price of the fish/steak; especially when comparing it to other upscale local steakhouses we have dined at, hence the reasonably appropriate 2-Star review. I do not plan to return to the Stockyards because there are so many better steakhouses in Arizona; and I would recommend others to avoid this place if you are looking for a great filet mignon or seafood dish. Frankly, I would prefer Texas Roadhouse or The Keg over this place. Restaurants like Capital Grill, Eddie V's, Morton's, and Ruth Chris completely destroy The Stockyard. read more

Over all the service and dinning experience was delightful. The roaring 20's decorative murals on the walls and architecture makes it feel very warm. The steaks are all grass feed and as a traditional steak house all cooked to medium temperature, they will however cook your steak however you'd look if you ask. I got the ribeye, which was good but after seeing the filet mignon I would have opted for that instead. The food was ok, it was definitely cut correctly which you could tell but the tenderness when eating it. Ambiance- as this is now a historical landmark being one of the first steak houses in Phoenix serving the same recipe. As you walk it, the restaurant is clean and gives you a sense of an history with plaques and pictures hanging down the walkway towards the restroom/ bar. Food- crab cake: 5/5- I enjoyed these crab cake as it was packed with lots of real crabs vs fillers. Pic was missing the sauce, but once we got it. It complemented the crabcake really well. I was very excited to eat at the Stockyard Restaurant with friends and one friend and I special ordered the calf liver for lunch. I called in a day prior because I knew they usually only have it for dinner and I liked it in the past. Today it was inedible. Instead of slices that should have been tender and a little juicy, they served me a piece of meat (It was probably liver) that was about 2 inches by 2 inches by 3 inches. It looked like a thick piece of steak. It was overcooked, dry and as appealing as an old leather shoe. I sawed a piece off and honestly, could not eat it. My friend couldn't eat her piece either. I asked the waitress (who was very nice) if this was how it was made and served in the evening and she said yes. We sent it back to the kitchen and she was gracious enough to not charge it. I wanted to talk to the manager but my friend didn't want me to. I was looking so forward to a great liver dinner and was so darn disapointed. My advise to everyone is to not order the liver and onions. Maybe the restaurant will go back to the way they used to cook the liver. In any case, whatever you do, do NOT order the liver. read more

Met up with friends for happy hour so my experience was @ the 1889 Saloon section of the restaurant. I loved the ambience, vibe and the service. The food from the HH menu however was disappointing. The Queso Fundido $14 tasted more like warm hummus and the tortilla chips were very bland. Definitely needed some salt on them. 2 prime rib sliders with fries $18 was good, had a good amount of meat. The fries were very dry. Citrus Burnt Crème (their version of crème brûlée)-$14, not on HH menu, was smooth, light, and not too sweet. I'm not a fan of overly sweet desserts so it was perfect for me. It was definitely a fun, cool restaurant to check out, but I don't think I'll return for happy hour as I just wasn't impressed with the food. But they now serve "high-choice" grade steak, which is not the same prime. Only they don't tell you that on the menu. You have to ask. They only have one prime-grade steak which is from Prescott of all places. All the other steaks are high choice. The problem is my high-choice ribeye was chewy and even had some grizzle I could not eat. My wifes prime Prescott steak was good though. I ordered rice pilaf as my side and it was disappointing. The service was amazing. Very attentive server and staff. The star of my dinner was their seafood chowder soup. Omg it was delicious! I got the New York strip with garlic mashed potatoes and that delicious soup. My hubby got the ribeye with a salad and a loaded baked potatoe. I asked for my steak medium well but it was more on the rare side, my husband's was cooked just right. Good thing he doesn't mind his steak really bloody, so we switched. For our brother's weekend, we booked a reservation at the Stockyards restaurant in Tempe! It was over the top. The service was incredible; two servers took care of us for our table of 10. And the entire inside was built like an old Western movie. The walls were covered with unbelievable artifacts and pictures of what it used to look like out in the West. As for the food... It was incredible! I saved a ton of room throughout the day by not eating and saved up for this meal. Totally worth it! I ended up getting the clam chowder, a side salad, a side of mushrooms, and some scallops with a medley of veggies. After all, I ended up getting the cheesecake, which was to die for, and a two-thumbs-up meal. We've enjoyed the Stockyads since the 70's when there was a cattle operation by the Resturant. Lots of history here. The ambience is formal Western, nicely appointed dining rooms. The venison/wild boar sausages were bomb with great sauces to accent the meats really nicely.
