My last review of this place was... unfavorable, to put it lightly. In general, Stone Arch had come off to me as an expensive and overrated establishment that talked a big game but couldn't quite match their cost with quality. It turns out that I had visited the establishment in the midst of renovations in early October. These unusual circumstances resulted in some awkward staffing issues that affected our service that day. Somehow, for the most part, things went very wrong that day. Our server was overworked and struggling to give us the attention he knew we deserved as customers. His apologies were simply not enough to convince us this place deserved another chance. After my previous review I was reached out to by management who wanted to use my feedback to improve their service. A few weeks of awkwardness in communications unfolded over Yelp and eventually e-mail. It wasn't until nearly a month later that I had a chance to talk in detail about my experience with management. I could have done more perhaps to make my voice heard about my experience, but I felt my review was sufficient and that if they truly wanted to make good on improving their service, they would show some initiative and reach out to me. In time, they did. I had the privilege of speaking directly to the establishment's general manager, and he assured me that on our next visit he would do everything he could to prove that his business could do better. I'd be lying if I said a part of me wasn't still skeptical. After all, I had waited a long time to hear back from anyone. Today, however, I'm pleased to say that I left this place feeling stunned and satisfied with our service and our food alike. And very full! I'm extremely glad that we decided to give this place a second try, and despite the cost of eating here we are already looking forward to when we'll have a chance to dine here again. As you can see by the date of my review, we came the evening of Halloween. Employees were dressed in various costumes and it was clear that they took pride in where they worked. It all looked very fun. I had only seen the tap room prior to this visit due to the renovations that had been ongoing at the time and said tap room paled in comparison to the presentation of the restaurant proper. It felt very upscale, but in a relaxed and pleasant way rather than an overly stiff way. The place was well lit, very clean, and the other guests that visited along the way all seemed equally as comfortable as we were. I was met personally by the general manager which was an all around pleasant experience. The server we had was great; I go through a lot of water, so I must have had like... five glasses. I didn't wait longer than maybe two minutes tops for a single refill, with most of them done proactively as my drink was getting low rather than when I was completely out. Our server was patient, eager to answer our questions, and generally very attentive and friendly. He earned his tip. We tried the Pub Basket again, hoping that maybe our previous visit had been some sort of fluke - maybe some of our food had been overcooked or underprepared last time. The fries and the chicken tenders were great last time, and they were great again. The kettle chips were better all around - last time there had been something strange about the taste that I couldn't quite place, but this time they were good! The onion rings were absolutely addicting and the cheese curds actually managed to live up to the hype. I was honestly sort of in disbelief that this was the same item we'd ordered last time. My girlfriend and I have a tendency to splurge sometimes on appetizers, so this time we opted for something cheaper than two separate entrees. At the recommendation of the general manager we tried their thin-crust pizza, which looked amazing in pictures. When the pizza was brought out it was picturesque! The sauce was divine, and the toppings were great... this, by the way, is coming from a guy that's not normally a big thin-crust pizza person... Stone Arch made me a believer this time around. After pigging out until I could eat no more we received boxes. Our server suggested a few desert options, and my girlfriend couldn't resist the chance to get some cheesecake. I had a few bites and it was great, but after finishing it she swore it was some of the best cheesecake she'd ever had. I'm never a big fan of leaving negative reviews, but it's clear to me now that sometimes doing so can actually be very beneficial to the restaurant. There are establishments out there like Stone Arch that truly care about their service and want to address concerns. The management at this establishment convinced me through actions that they genuinely value feedback they receive, as evidenced by their willingness to make sure our second visit went swimmingly. Somehow, against the odds, they won my girlfriend and I back as customers, and we WILL be back! read more

Today they nailed it out of the park. I had a grass fed beef burger with cheddar cheese and it was amazing. Perfectly cooked and then I had their gourmet soda, root beer, it was really good. I had the orzo chicken soup (like chicken noodle) that was good, a bit salty for me but my husband like it. My table mate had their Turkey Avocado wrap and really liked it. My other table mate had the grass fed burger and liked it, they also had the grass fed beef chili and really liked it. When visiting family in Appleton, we decided to visit Stone Arch Brewpub for lunch. This is a cozy space in a historic old building right by the Fox River. There was a brewery tour going on when we arrived, which ended up in a separate taproom space from the restaurant. We made our way down to the restaurant space, and the stonework and brick reminded us of being in a French wine cellar. A relaxing and comfortable space. I started with the Cinnfull stout, which tasted like a rich cinnamon roll wrapped up in a stout beer. Really enjoyed this beer. We ordered their award winning Wisconsin cheese curds for the app. Cubes of local cheese lightly breaded and fried. Really good. For lunch, I had the Cuban sandwich. I enjoyed it, and the pulled pork in the sandwich was excellent. I finished with the Cherry Grand Cru dark ale. Rich, tasty, and a good finish to an excellent lunch. read more

Checked the place out with my family and two other families while we were in town for a softball tournament. It was a strange experience. The food was decent, but the service was just odd. First, we had to wait in the bar for a table to open, which is understandable for a group of 11. The only problem was that they didn't like us using the 4-tips in the bar while we waited, although they are not used for seating people for dinner. They only serve their own beer, which is also understandable. Unfortunately, it's pretty average and forgettable, so I just switched to water. Once we were seated, we were informed we'd be at 2 tables with 2 different servers, which was a challenge because we wanted the 6 parents at one table and our 4 kids at the other, but we couldn't put the kids on our bills. It turned out that we were misinformed, and both tables ended up having the same server. Speaking of the server, she was nice enough but a little awkward, and she made a pretty significant mistake with one order and made a mess of the bills at the end. We chose this place because it has so many high reviews. Honestly, I think it's overrated, and no more than 3 stars, and probably closer to 2.5, which isn't an option. read more

I came here for a late night quick bite with my daughters after a show. They are one of the few places serving food until 10 pm on a Sunday night. We showed up close to 9:30, yet they were happy to seat us, take orders, and even offer another round after close instead of rushing us through our meal even though we were the only ones there. The food was very good, about in line with the price. We had the pub basket--very heavy on fries and kettle cooked chips, alas we would have loved more of the fried cheese which was absolutely to die for! It's a little harder to find, especially with construction on Oneida, but it's worth making your way in for a bite! read more

A couple of my out of town grandsons, and 13 in all of immediate family. Time to order, Specials were Schnitzel and something else. Despite my German Heritage I was really unfamiliar with Schnitzel. I'd you are doing the delicious salad and soup bar, you may want to ask them to hold on your food a bit as ours came too quickly. ;) We added the, soup and salad bar to our bison and elk burgers for only $5. Well worth it! The Tumeric Tuscan soup was absolutely delicious, and so were all the different ingredients on the salad bar. I'll probably stick with the burgers next time because the elk and bison didn't have as much flavor. They were natively a little bit dryer, and the bison especially had a little less clever than we like. read more

One time I got the special of the day which was some type of fish with Swiss chard, it was borderline inedible. The second time I decided to stick with the menu and got the Elk burger, it was just average & thought the bun was super dry. Won't be back anytime soon. read more

Stone Arch was amazing!! They have so many different gourmet sodas and beers to taste. Our waiter, Landon, was very attentive and very kind as well. I had in pizza with Roma tomatoes and fresh basil with some of the best fries in the world!! Although this restaurant is delicious, be aware that there are many German inspired (very heavy) dishes. Stopped in for the first time this past weekend after wanting to get here for the longest time and my wife and I were not disappointed. The beer was really good and we ended going home with a bunch of it. The menu is extremely interesting and well thought out with large variety to choose from. We tried the chili, which was good but your typical NE WI chili, the brisket sandwich (really good) and the Mediterranean chicken wrap (really good!). They also have some if the most addictive fries I've had. Wonderful venue, great food and really good food means we will be coming back again! read more

Great place for a meal and local beer. This restaurant is in the lower level of an older building very close to the Lawrence University campus. They brew their own beer and soda which are delicious. They have a good casual menu with a lot of sandwich, larger meal and pizza choices. They use local and natural ingredients and have vegan options. We have visited 3 times and the food and service was great each time. I recommend the pizza and the kettle chips. My husband had a sliced sirloin sandwich and loved it, but he was not crazy about the fries. He sticks with the kettle chips now. The setting is casual and there is an attempt to play on the rustic charm of the older building. The flooring, tables and chairs distract from the charm. Switching those could give the space a much cooler vibe. read more

Very decent at both: In larger cities there are better brew pubs and better gastro pubs but rarely one that does both well -- this is one of my favorite places to eat in the Fox Valley area now. Beers: I've had the IPA (ok), Scotch Ale (good), Honey Wheat (very good), English Six Grain (very good), and Pilsner (meh). Food: Mac and Beer Cheese (excellent), duck fingers (very good), scotch egg (ok), Shepherd's pie (very good), fish & chips (good), walleye (good), grass-fed ribeye (excellent), and elk steak (ok). Sides (veggies and potatoes) were meh. Service is friendly and excellent -- the occasional very tiny detail missed (e.g., no steak knife or initially missing a condiment I asked for) but more than made up for with enthusiasm and friendliness. Ambience is cool... basement with old stone walls. Bar always has a decent crowd and dining area is quiet enough to have a conversation but loud enough to know you're at a pub. read more

It took 20 minutes to get our sodas, 35 for our salads, an HOUR for our all deep fried appitizer, and at an hour and 20 minutes- I wasnt waiting any longer. I called over the manager, and he didnt look surprised at all when I told him we still hadent recieved our food and how long we had waited. I asked for our check so we could go elsewhere, and he came back and said it was on him. Im 5 months pregnant-- I would have rather had my food!!! I dont think I will ever attempt to eat here again. Chef Brady Ahrens is the chef here at the Stone Cellar, and he delivers up a menu that's definitely new to me. I've been here several times mostly for drinks, but I had to try more of the food after I saw the menu on the outside wall because "Reuben Shooters" $4.99 just popped out (or maybe it was my heart), and I had no freak'n idea what the hell that was. Luckily for me, I struck up a conversation with the couple that owns the map store in the building. They described it to me as a deep fried ball of corn beef hash! Now I'm not sure if that's what it is, but it was actually kind of good. I say "kind of "because it was different, yet it didn't suck. The other item on the menu that was HIGHLY recommended was the Scotch Egg which is a house favorite $3.99, and once again I was intrigued to try that out too. "when in Wisconsinsy, do as the Wisconsinites do". Ok, now you won't probably see this on any menu in California (or any other state West of the Mississippi??), but what it is, is a hard boiled egg with a sausage mixture coated with breadcrumbs, but like all things in the midwest, it's deep fried to clogged arteries perfection! Mmmh, mmh, good! Overall, I like this place because it's actually set in I guess what you would call a "stone cellar", and your surrounded by stone walls in a very dimly lit interior which creates a very intimate atmosphere that is very unique and unlike any commercial chain restaurant. It's been a long time since I've reviewed an establishment on Yelp, but I knew eventually something really good (or really bad) would come around to pull me out of retirement. I knew immediately that Stone Cellar would be that place. I've been here 3 times in the last 2 weeks during work trips. Although there are a number of other interesting looking places in the Appleton area, I can't seem to go anywhere else when I'm in town. It's not often that a sandwich changes my life, but this was one of those rare occasions. The Cajun Gator Po boy, was that sandwich. A generous heap of adequately battered gator sits atop a huge hoagie bun with a smear of Sriracha aioli and capers to keep it interesting. The only problem with this dining experience was that the sandwich came to an end. I'd also recommend the French fries, as they're seasoned in some sort of seasoning, keeping them just different enough from your average bar fry. Food is great, beer is great, atmosphere is great. Aptly named, the pub is in a poorly-lit cellar of an old building, but don't let that throw you off. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Beers were good, especially the pumpkin ale, but I was a little thrown off by the light colored root beer that came with the flight. Cheese curds were good, but somewhat different than what I was familiar with. These were cut into squares rather than being chunky pieces, but the beer batter was great. My boyfriend and I both got side salads with our sandwiches, and we did appreciate the fact that the salads were composed differently, since he got a honey mustard dressing and I got Caesar. I feel like the chef here did a good job of thinking out of menu items. If we ever are back in Appleton, we'd probably stop in again. read more

My latest visit to Stone Cellar confirmed my previous observations. The atmosphere is still cool and dark with minimal distraction from TVs. I love the rock walls in this place. You must sit in the bar area for the best experience. I have never sat in the "dining room", but it does not look like I would enjoy it. The beer is still good. The Stone Cellar stout, Vanishing Vanilla stout, and the Tilted Kilt Scottish ale were all enjoyed. A special surprise was that they had Bell's Hop Slam on guest tap! You know I had to have one of those as well. For the first time since I started coming to Stone Cellar, we sampled the soda. The orange creme was very tasty. The blue raspberry was a little too much like Kool-Aid for my taste. I only took a few sips of each, but my companions that had ordered them seemed to enjoy them. Unfortunately, they were out of the root beer. Maybe next time. The service continues to be the reason that I cannot give Stone Cellar another star. Once again, the servers are generally pleasant, but I am looking for a little more attention to detail. I don't know if it is because I am not a regular, or perhaps I don't understand how service works in Wisconsin. It might also be that I usually sit at one of the high bar tables and they are too far from the taps. Whatever it is, the drink service is slow. At one point three of us were without beers for about 10 minutes. I went over to the bar and ordered myself. It was not very busy. I hate that society has decided that we must have straws in every glass of water. I hate it even more when I have to keep telling the server NO STRAW. On a related note, any fine beer place should understand the benefits of making ample water available. You don't have to assume that everyone wants water (although they should), but if I am drinking your delicious, high alcohol beers for hours and I order a round of water for everyone, then please keep it coming. I will tip accordingly. So despite the bitching, I do like Stone Cellar. I just cannot help but compare them to other places that I have been. Those places have a little something extra and they got 4 or 5 stars. So Stone Cellar just needs to step it up a little. I will definitely be back to watch for improvements... and drink some good beer of course! read more

Meh. Stone Cellar may, as so many on Yelp claim, be the best restaurant in Appleton, but that doesn't mean it's a great restaurant as so many Yelpers claim. Three of us dined there and found the service to be subpar and the food mediocre. We ordered Copper River Sockeye Salmon (only in season now) and there's no way that's what we received. And, it was overcooked, dry and flavorless. My companions both ordered steak, which was decent. The overarching component of all three meals was lack of salt. Do they not season anything in Wisconsin? Salt. It's a flavor enhancer. Tell the chef, huh? The appetizer we ordered, duck wings, was served to our party of three with four legs. (Most servers would simply ask if you want an upgrade to 6 for a table of three, right?). The duck wings came in a bowl with no plates for any of us. Odd. We ate off of cocktail napkins. The ambience in the restaurant is fine. You're in a cellar, so it's a bit dark, but that's not a big deal for us. Noise level was fine. The clientele were very mixed. Young couples, families, women out for a bachelorette party. Overall, it was fine, but hardly a mecca of gastronomy or superior service read more
