So I can't stand when people leave one star reviews without even having had the food and beverage at a restaurant, but here I am, doing just that.
We traveled six hours from Boston to the Finger Lakes for a short weekend to meet up with friends and family. Time together would be short - we'd have only two lunches together away from our campsite at Watkins Glen, so we did our research to choose a lunch spot that offered great food, drinks, and views, and we settled on the Stonecat. We made a reservation for 10 people for 1:30 pm on that Saturday.
We kept our party on track to show up promptly at 1:28. We asked to sit on the back patio, but were told they would have to put tables together to accommodate that and so they sat us in a room toward the back instead. We were the only table indoors in these two rooms, so they weren't busy - and there went the gorgeous views, but okay, we are a large party and that's understandable. I wouldn't hold space for ten on my deck, either.
We were all still excited for the food and had our first frosty beverages selected. Ten minutes went by. We still hadn't been greeted, so I got up to check the specials board so that our table could also make food choices. At that time, I asked the hostess who'd sat us for a server, and was told one would be right up.
Five minutes more go by. Three servers walk by, fetching water for their tables, going in and out of a room behind ours. For us? Crickets. Perhaps Harry Potter's Cloak of Invisibility was real? Perhaps it was tarp-sized, and covering our party?
Anyway - the room we were sat in had its blinds down on this gorgeous afternoon, so now going on 20 minutes in, two of us got up to fold up the accordion shades. Immediately a server showed up behind us to say we didn't have to do that, that they'd do it for us - could this be it? Would we actually get to order lunch? Nope! She watched while we finished the blinds on the two other windows and just walked away! As she went, we asked her for a server as well - and she said someone would be right up.
Meantime, they sat another party of six on the room adjacent to us. Another five minutes go by, and we again get up and go ask the first server we see for a server. It had now been 20 minutes. Then: a new server came in! Could it be? Was she the one? But she said nothing to us, approached the party of six that had been sitting there for five minutes, and apologized for their wait!
We were in such disbelief by this point - remember, we had a reservation, had arrived on time, and had now asked three times, three different people for a server - so there really was zero excuse for this besides blatant disorganization on their parts.
So we set a timer. If no one had even greeted our table 28 minutes after we sat down, we would leave. I wanted Stonecat food so badly I got up to find a manager at 25 minutes to ask to get a server so the whole group didn't leave. I found one, but the timer hit 28 and our group filed out the front door as I reported that we had not even been greeted for nearly half an hour.
We were all pretty pissed, but ended up at a small sandwich shop with an ice cream stand out front just a couple of miles up the road - and let me tell you, we ended up thankful that the Stonecat wreaked of neglect and disorganization... for shorter money, we ended up being immediately sat and served on a beautiful deck overlooking the lake by folks who care about their business and their customers - and the sandwiches were inventive, well-crafted, PHENOMENALLY delicious by any foodie's standards, and the ice cream rich and creative.
To the customers: Spend your hard-earned money at a place that values you. This isn't it. We wasted a precious hour and a half on our only full day in the Finger Lakes choosing the Stonecat, getting there, and getting put in a back room to be forgotten. (And would easily have spent $250 on food and drinks.)
To the owners and managers of Stonecat: pull it together. Excellent food is only half the battle. Who cares what you offer, if even to guests who've let you know they're coming, you don't even offer a table side greeting? But, on the other hand, thanks for forcing to go to a place the we would otherwise have overlooked - THAT was truly an awesome and memorable experience with loved ones, and I'll also be leaving that business the review they deserve! Search around for my reviews in his area, folks.
(It's now taken me ~30 minutes to write this review. If that seems like too long to spend writing a review, it is. And I could've written it in the same amount of time we waited for ... absolutely nothing at the Stonecat.) read more
