This is our favorite steak place and has been for a decade. My daughters order was wrong and my plate of food was cold. My husbands steak was over marinated, charred on the outside, and raw in the middle instead of the usual delicious medium rare we are always served there. The waiter was taking a smoke break right outside of our window as we took our first expensive bites. The waiter and manager both decided to debate the issue of how the steak was prepared, rather than apologizing. The fries were different in a lackluster way. We have enjoyed Stoney River a few times now. Although each time we've gone we have had to wait past our reservation time to be seated, the meal has made up for it. However, this last time there we had to wait 30 mins past our 8pm rez, and altho we did see the manager walking about during our wait, there was absolutely no sight of him once we were finally seated. We absolutely love Stony River. We were just getting back from out of town from my grandmother's funeral. It's been an extremely difficult long week/weekend. We were passing by and decided to stop at our favorite place, I've been craving their filet and cream spinach. We had and amazing waiter named Herb. He really rolled out the red carpet for us. I mean provided amazing service. The food was cooked to protection as always. This was the perfect experience during an extremely difficult time. The New York strip was grilled perfectly and my wife enjoyed a kale salad with a salmon fillet - a suggestion of our server's that was much appreciated. I ordered a draft beer that upon delivery was described as, "You're lucky - this was the last of that keg." My first thought was, "Hmm, maybe not so lucky." Amaaaaazing steak dinner. We tend to avoid chain restaurants, but we were both in the mood for steak - we were not disappointed. My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary and we were treated like royalty! We were greeted with free champagne and a very warm welcome by the very kind manager, Matt. We started with the lobster bisque and French onion soup. Both were delicious and hot as they were brought out. We then got Wedge Salads which were amazing. I LOOOOVE STONEY RIVER! It's owned by J. Alexander's, but I think this restaurant wins in the overall category. And not just any Stoney River, but THIS Stoney River. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating and there is nothing to complain about in that department. I go to this restaurant about 2-3 times a month. I've been for dinner, a million times for brunch. I love brunch here because it's quieter, the mimosa or bellini carafes are $15 (incredible value), you can make a reservation so you don't have to wait in line for hours, and it's always good food. I would not recommend coming here if you're in a huge hurry, not because service is slow but they want you to have a great, more upscale experience, which experience to me does not mean in and out. It's savoring your food, finishing a course before the next course comes along, etc. All of their steaks are great, but the Coffee-Cured Filet is just SO tasty. The flavor is unlike any other restaurant's steak. You can't get it anywhere else, and they make it perfectly. I've had a bunch of the sides too... macaroni and cheese, hashbrowns for two (really for 3 or 4), french fries, creamed spinach, kale salad, broccoli, mashed potatoes (lots more) and I swear whenever I go I become the Sides Queen and order extras with my entree. Having dined at Stoney multiple times, I was excited to head here again as I have always left happy and felt my money was well spent. Tonight unfortunately wasn't one of those nights. I am not sure if our waitress was new, or if she simply was just nervous, but either way she made multiple mistakes. She came by immediately after we sat down and asked if we were ready to order our appetizer and suggested the most expensive one....? Hmmm. I told her we were going to look over the drink menu and to come back with some waters, which she did....and then suggested the most expensive cocktail. Anyway when we did order eventually, the food came in a reasonable time. Unfortunately my filet was so salty I couldn't even pretend to like it. I kept waiting for her to ask how our plates were, but suddenly she disappeared and never came to ask how our entrees turned out. I had taken two bites of my steak and the rest was untouched - anybody with common sense would ask if something was wrong. I'm not one to make a scene, so I let it slide. Either way, the medallions we had were perfect so the whole meal wasn't a lost cause....but I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon. We visited for dinner on Saturday, 12/10. Overall, we had a very good experience. We booked a reservation yet still had to wait about thirty minutes or so. This was a bit surprising but not intolerable. It was Saturday night and the joint was jumpin'. It's not a place to go for a quiet evening out, if such a place even exists in the area on a weekend night. We were there to celebrate a college graduation and the noise and high energy level seemed appropriate for our occasion. The place says "chain," albeit upscale, in both style and menu, but in this case it was not a negative. Food, service and ambiance were very good-to-excellent. One thing I will say is that despite rotating staff they all seemed very tuned in to our dinner and the quality of our experience as it was unfolding. We had a couple of very minor issues surface during dinner that the staff managed extremely well. Good communication and empowerment must be central themes in the restaurant's service philosophy. Dress looked like it could be anything one wishes to wear. Going too casual on a Saturday night, however, might cause one to stand out. Better up than down. On to the food. The Wedge salad and Deviled Eggs were the high points of the first course. Most of us had steaks and they were seasoned well and perfectly prepared. I'm on the slightly-warm-side-of-medium-rare kind of person, and their idea of medium rare was perfect for me. As far as sides go, which apparently can be plated or served family style (one of the two minor points of confusion with our order), their take on mac-and-cheese was really quite unique. I could not tell what cheese or blend of cheeses they used. This version of the classic had a light consistency with very strong flavors. My daughter loved it; I had a small taste and was so-so on it. We ordered two deserts for everyone to share, the Creme Brûlée and Chocolate Fudge Cake; both were unsurprising but excellent. Enjoy. In theory, Stoney River is a "steakhouse". However, in practice, it is a J. Alexander's that only serves steaks. It's like if you went to J. Alexander's and chopped the menu in half, you would have Stoney River. The steaks taste the same as Stoney River. The salads taste the same, etc. The only difference seems to be price, certain items on the menu and their fried bread balls. The clientele here is graying and the food is very boring as it caters to them. Imagine a menu from 2002 - that's Stoney River. J. Alexander's at the Palm prices. Ordered a cowboy ribeye, prime rib and fried shrimp. Added salads and onion rings. Sides were baked potato, mac and cheese, french fries and spinach. Onion rings were fine - 100% the same as you would find at J. Alexander's. Salads were fine, although way too big. Massive portions are fine, but not when you're touting that over the quality/taste of your food. Entrees came out. Ribeye - good quality meat, which is a shame as it was too salty, Overdone. Asked for mid-rare, got medium. Prime rib - cookie cutter prime rib, same as J. Alexander's. Asked for mid-rare, it was not mid-rare. Too salty, au jus was inedible because it was too salty. Shrimp - Overdone. It was clear they used a cocktail shrimp (already cooked), battered it, fried it and then threw it on a plate. No sauce option beyond cocktail sauce. Shoestring fries are the exact same as J. Alexander's. Service was medicore. The second we sat down we were asked if we had our orders ready. Not even given time to open the damn menu. We had a new server with selective hearing. I asked for water with lemon twice and was never brought a lemon. We had to ask twice for steak knives - we sat there with huge chunks of meat and no real way to cut them for a good 5-10 minutes. I asked for his recommendation for the best side, was told mac and cheese, ordered the mac and cheese, ate one bite of the mac and cheese and left the rest - no comment from the waiter. The mac and cheese is not good - it tastes a lot like American cheese. So why even have a re-branded J. Alexander's? I don't know. Is this place supposed to be more upscale? Less upscale? The menu pricing says more upscale, but eating there I can't tell. There were babies screaming in the dining room - doesn't bother me too much, but definitely not good in a restaurant where a bill came to $200 for 3 people. I do not recommend it. Just go a real steakhouse like The Palm or Morton's or Ruths Chris. I am also disappointed to see that Stoney River does not have a corporate contact. I had a $75 gift certificate that this location rejected because it was "too old". I lost track of a gift certificate, found it and then they treated me like I was trying to use an overdue coupon. It was embarrassing. It was a huge reminder to never, ever buy gift cards. There is a large difference between rejecting a promo and rejecting a gift certificate that someone paid cash for. I was given a free appetizer, but that does not equal $75. Let me start by saying this is an edit of a previously 5 star review that was posted after frequenting this establishment since moving here... BE WARNED. The long list of excellent reviews mostly come from people who visited before these changes were made. Stoney River is being managed by J. Alexanders now, and they're making many unwelcome changes. Several dishes have been changed for the worse, or removed entirely from the menu. "Parmesan Fries" were thick cut steak fries brushed with truffle oil and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Now you get J. Alexanders style "Shoestring fries" which are very plain. The price remains unchanged. Why a steakhouse would change their fries from steak fries to shoestring fries is beyond me. The service is not as good as it used to be. There was a time when the server or food runner would bring steaks to table, and wait for the first cut so that the diner can confirm that the food was cooked as it was ordered. Never once did I ever have an issue with my steak being under or overcooked. They no longer do this. And it is no surprise that steaks are often undercooked now. They have remodeled. The soft, ambient, romantic, snug, welcoming environment is now gone for a more contemporary feel, much like J. Alexanders. If we wanted to dine at J. Alexanders we would have gone there... they are just across the street. read more

Hubby and I don't get out for nice, romantic dinners very much anymore. We're much more likley to be at the neighborhood Mexican place or a deli than on purpose changing clothes and making a reservation. Saturday night we had an absolutely fabulous dinner at Stoney River, so we think we're going to have to do this more often. The Whisky Shrimp appetizer was fantastic - plump, huge shrimp with an amazing sauce over individual little bread pieces. Just enough. He had the filet, marinated in the coffee/brown sugar marinade - fabulous. I might have stolen a bite or two. Or three. I had the sea bass off the current seafood celebration specialty menu - very nice as well. I ordered the fish because we had ordered a bottle of white wine before dinner, and I know, I know, we're at a steak place. The reason was is I attended a Vintner's Dinner at this location last fall (part of www.FranklinWineFestival.com by the way - it's my job). What you don't know is I don't drink wine - that's why I'm perfect to manage a large wine tasting with over 350 varieties... I don't care about the leftovers. That dinner featured one wine that I enjoyed, and I knew SR carried it. It's a Steele Pinot Blanc, and it's the first wine I've encountered that I have no issues with. (I am much moreso a cosmo or margarita girl). All of our sides were good - mac & cheese, spinach, green beans, and au gratin potatoes. The rolls there are like doughnuts - OMG. Seriously - OMG. We even opted for dessert, a good cheesecake and an excellent creme brulee. If I had it to do all over again, we'd both order the filet and we'd both order the creme brulee - but seriously, the whole evening was wayyyy good. Even our server was fantastic. My boyz are right snobs when it comes to their meat b/c the biggest of them learned from J. We ordered bacon-wrapped filet, the Gruyere steak burger, the coffee rubbed steak. All steaks rare, mid-rare, and burger mid-rare. Blown away. The steaks were extremely high quality. The filet was exceptionally flavorful. My number one would ordinarily never order filet b/c it's the least well-marbled cut and as a result not so delicious. This one was exceptional. The steaks were very tender, perfectly cooked and delicious. Just delicious. I could be wrong but we were convinced these steaks had never been frozen. There is obviously a high level of attention here to picking the best quality meats. I had the avocado salad. Spectacularly fresh ingredients. Freshly cooked and crumbled bacon. Maybe a smidge too much. Wait, I am a southern girl, so I think I must've picked up the thought of "too much bacon" from some foreign place. Given that experience, we HAD to go back and test it. SR in Franklin just started serving brunch less than a couple of months ago. So, our next trip was on a Sunday. We tried the brunch. Ripping spectacular. We ordered a monte cristo b/c we had to have it. Better than any I have had in France. It came with a mound of finely sliced ham and I braced myself for saltiness, which I don't like at all. Nowhere to be found. The ham was flavorful. The bread had been soaked in egg and crisply fried. If you get one thing at brunch, get the monte cristo. We also had steak and eggs--perfectly done soft poached eggs on rare steak and delicious chunky potato spears. Crisp and seasoned on the outside and creamy inside. My last mention is the biscuits at brunch. I feel like I know a good biscuit when I meet him. This boy was small, buttery, flaky, and oh so light. Served with whipped butter, peach bourbon and blackberry jams. I almost fought my number two son for the last biscuit and caught myself. *Gawd Woman. That's your issue and you tried to snatch food out of his mouth!* He's bigger than me, so, I tried to use love to get that last biscuit. My boy is no fool. He looked me in the eye. Love beamed at me. Then he popped that last biscuit in his mouth. So, now, I only take one son when I go to SR. The little one that I can over power. read more

The first time that we ate at Stoney River Steakhouse is when we were first visiting Nashville apartment hunting. On that occasion I had the best steak of my entire life. It was the filet cooked medium. I'm giving it 4 out of 5 stars because on the second occasion visiting Stoney River myself and my entire family had the coffee-cured filet and we were slightly disappointed, the filet was an excellent cut of meat, but entirely too salty. Next time I would certainly go back to the original filet because you just can't beat it. That being said, the service at both the downtown Nashville location and the Franklin location was fantastic, as was the atmosphere. The wedge salad was great and the poppy seed rolls at the beginning are TO DIE FOR and the potatoes au gratin are frankly just over the top awesome. Given my first steak I would say that this is one of the best, if not the best steakhouse I've ever been too. Ok, I want to confess one thing before I begin my review: I went to this restaurant on a low-carb diet, so I could not enjoy some of the sides that looked enticing like the potatoes au gratin, or the hot rolls. If appearances were any indication, they seemed to be the strength of the restaurant. I unfortunately had the sauteed spinach with sea salt, and it was a mess of green leaves on my plate with little taste or flavor. The steaks: Well, if Outback Steakhouse or Sizzler is your standard, then Stoney River will exceed your expectation. But if you've enjoyed truly great steak at an upscale steak house, you'll find these steaks average. I had the coffee molasses marinated filet mignon. It was fine. Not great, but fine. My opinion of Stoney River has changed over the last two years. I realize that the financial condition of the country has changed, and everyone is going to hefty price increases to survive, but this resturant has taken price increases to a new level. Years ago Stoney River was a go to for a special event. The food was consistent though pricy, but you were well treated and received a decent portion. It maintained the ambiance of a local steakhouse who cared about their customers. However, as time has passed the prices have continued to go up and the portion size down. This was offset from time to time with a 20.00 coupon, which helped draw you back for the customer service and local feel. The coupons have disappeared and now that there has been another corporate buy out, the customer care and local feel is totally gone. Where once you could ask for a little tweek to your meal, you now are narrowed to a rote menu and have to all but argue to make any change to your selection. The flow of our meal on this occasion made us feel as though we were in a cafeteria as opposed to a fine Resturant. The meal followed our appetizer in minutes and our requested sauce for the appetizer followed after the main meal. The drinks ordered from the bar were late as well. The staff manages to push another round of drinks every five minutes without attending to the other requests of the table. All in all the attention quality and ambiance of this resturant has changed and no longer warrents it's price point. Try a local place instead!!!! read more

Everything I wrote before is true. Since then, i did finally bring myself to contact management of our experiences. WOW! They super served us! I was immediately contacted by the management team. They asked us to give them another chance, asked to let him know we were coming and send a nice gift card for the inconvenience. The short is that we have been back multiple times (and several times before we notified management we were going to be there) - I didn't want to be super served just because we of our past experiences. We have had GREAT experiences almost every time. There are a few servers that we have learned to avoid, but overall we really enjoy going there. The food is very good.
