This is a moderate-advanced hike. You definitely want shoes that grip or hiking boots; dirt path with a good amount of rocks. Small parking lot but there's street parking a little further down the hill.

Truly a nice hike but not good for someone who is experiencing back pain or someone who cannot handle elevation. I came here around 7am after dropping off my sister's husband at the Burbank airport on a Saturday. My boyfriend was experiencing some back pain prior to the hike and I just brushed it off and told him to just walk it off. This hike is not meant for someone to "walk off pain" because there is so much incline. With incline, there is also decline which really destroys your already fragile body because you are walking at a consistent unfamiliar forward angle. The hike itself isn't too long and you can turn back whenever you want. It does loop around and it took us around an hour and a half to get down. The best thing is there are restrooms that are open early next to the nature center (even though the nature center opens at 9am). Plenty of street parking right with a bit of a walk then there is also actual parking at a lot which wasn't open when we got there at 7am (so it probably opens at 8am? Maybe). Overall, great hike, great views, and I would love to come back again!

This is a moderate trail where you can bring children or the elderly since it's not too difficult to get to the BUR airport overlook. The parking is free but there aren't too many spaces but we've never have had trouble finding a spot. If you love plane spotting then you will enjoy the overlook and see the flights take off and land.

It was a beautiful warm day, perfect for a bike ride! I rode my mountain bike from Vicory and Buena Vista up past DeBELL Golf Course . I rode my bike up to Strough Canyon Nature Center. After checking out the beautiful facility, I continued up the nature trail that starts there by the parking lot. The trail starts out with a gradual incline, then starts getting steeper as you go through the switch backs. I made it up to the first stop at the Half mile point. There is a bench there and a great view of DeBELL Golf Course. It was my first attempt to make it to the top. So I decided that would be a good first ride up the trail.

This hike is NO joke (especially the initial starting portion which is a bit of a climb) but it's a beautiful and well-maintained trail (all dirt). The trailhead has a nice restroom and a decent parking lot. The views of Burbank are unmatched at the top and there are some picnic tables to sit at to enjoy a snack or meal. I would definitely recommend this hike to others and I don't think you need a whole bunch of hiking experience to do this one. It's more of a decent walk on dirt with incline at a very points.

Stough Canyon Nature Center is a nice little getaway spot located just 15 minutes away from Hollywood Burbank Airport. It is also happened to be an entrance of the Stough Canyon Loop (2.4-mile loop trail). [Hours]: Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM, Tuesday to Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM, and closes on Monday. [Parking]: There's a small designated parking lot and there were empty of spot when I got here on Sunday. [Activities]: The center offers docent led hikes such as Moonlight Hikes and Wild Creatures Walk. Other activities include Woodcarving Workshop, Story Owl Hour, and other recreational classes. [What's inside]: You will get to see western hognose snake, a touch table of tortoise shell/rabbit fur/t-rex tooth replica/deer fur, and information displays. I did not have any cellular reception, but luckily the center offers free Wi-Fi. The staff was friendly and I had a friendly & quick chat too. A great stop to check out for 15 - 30 minutes. P.S. - Restroom is available just outside of the center. P.P.S. - There's a short & hidden trail called Shane Colin Proffitt Trail and it's a nice 5-minute walk. The entrance is located right next to the center (just off the parking lot) and the trail loops back to the driveway entrance of the Stough Canyon Nature Center.

Beautiful, clean and with lots of parking available. Come during the week if you can. The trails are less crowded and you can enjoy it all to yourself.

These trails are very well maintained and you can go as far or short as your little legs can go. If you're trying to do a loop with Wildwood or other canyons, you may have to do some road mileage to get back. The facilities are well maintained and it'd be nice if every trailhead in this Verdugo Trail System also had nice facilities.

Been hiking here twice now, both times with my husband and our doggies. The first time we went up close to the top - not doing the full loop as I think its a 6+ mile loop. We went back down but took a narrower path that was a bit scary. This time we went back down the wider path - this was a nice 3 mile hike. I like this place because - one, there's a restroom there, two, if you can get there around 10am, it's not super crowded, three - the views are amazing, and lastly - it is dog friendly - dog bowl at the restroom area. There is a parking lot but we usually just find parking on the street right before.

This is one of those reviews that almost pains me to write. Why? Simply because I don't want people to find out about this spot. I am VERY anti-social when it comes to hiking. Not only do I take it seriously in terms of exercise but it is also when I meditate and reflect so I don't like to hike with others and that includes not liking other people on the trails. I am not a Runyan Canyon "be seen" sort of gal. All of my secret hiking spots always get discovered after a few years and I am pushed away. Hopefully, that won't happen here as, Stough Canyon is MINE. Stough Canyon is located in the Verdugo Mountains and has a sort of nondescript entrance past a golf course. There is an actual small nature center building which I can't speak on because I haven't been inside (I have seen children attending birthday parties here so I think it can be rented out). The hike and trails themselves are probably my favorite in the Valley due to the mixture of the scenery/views and the energy in the mountain. Laurel Canyon on the Valley side has odd vibes and has become "stuffy" but you won't find that at Stough Canyon. Stough Canyon is best described as an intermediate hike. There is an immediate incline of 2000 feet and all the trails continue upwards past that. There really aren't that many flat portions. The trails are wide but very rocky: this is the type of hike NOT good for children/strollers/dogs because there are loose rocks everywhere. You will be transported into imagining what life was like when California was discovered. Make sure to wear proper supportive shoes or you will hurt your ankles and gets sediment into your shoes. Not to mention, there is little shade aside from the natural shading from trees and sides of the canyon. Therefore, this isn't as "easy" as some reviews state but perfect for hiking aficionados such as myself. Lovely views hit you instantly with a nice look during the first incline at downtown LA. Once you bypass this and hit the first fork; left takes you to the Old Youth Camp outlook which has a tree and picnic table and the most amazing views of the entire Valley. Are you a plane lover? You are right above the Burbank Airport and can just sit and watch planes take off or gaze at downtown LA. In fact, in the far distance (a bit difficult to see because of our lovely smog); you can even see the ocean! You can see the barges and boats! This is definitely the spot for all of you trendy folk who like taking photos in yoga poses with a great view in the background. Making a right at the fork is the more common path. You will get all up in the Verdugo Mountains like girls at a Bachlorette Party on Channing Tatum. This trail is rockier but also has a more lush scenery and with really neat rocks (you can collect and find awesome river rock/gems perfect for collecting or jewelry making). The wonderful thing about these trails are that there are so many options. Aside from the main trails, there are many offshoots which mountain bikers zoom past on. I have spent 2 hours at once at Stough taking a 12 mile hike and there are still more paths to explore! It is amazing and SO perfect without all the kids and unleashed dogs you find on other "hikes" (those are called "walks", people. You aren't hiking!). There are snakes, lizards, and coyotes so be careful with that especially those who hike at night for the views. The major downfall? Parking. The parking lot is very small so you usually have to park along the road leading up to the canyon so basically you are already hiking up before you even begin the hike! Annoying. I could rave about Stough Canyon all day. But I won't because it is my spot and I don't want it bombarded. Long story short though, this is an intermediate hike with great views and a very natural, rocky setting. Definitely the best in the East Valley. Now go away!

What a gem of a nature center in Burbank. Driving up to the parking lot, the roads are well maintained and the layout is orderly. Restrooms are clean, and they have toilets and sinks. The start of the running/hiking trail head is easily located as well. The only negative is that cell reception is very spotty and difficult to access, even at the parking lot. parking - free lot

    Great views from the look-out
    David L.

Great hikes for beginners and moderate-types alike. Plenty of parking and road-side parking in case the lot is full.

I have been hiking this trail a few times, and today I made it to the tower. I was feeling very accomplished especially hiking up from Stough Cyn to the Vital Link and going down and out at Wildwood Cyn. Brutal, I made many rest stops as I felt my knees are giving up. I took nice photos & videos. Not sure when or if I will do this again. Glad I did though.

Is this hike okay for a 4 year old and 9 year old?

It's a pretty tuff trail the best thing to do is try it before taking them. Unless there up for a challenge after the heat goes down.

Perfect hike for a hot day…read more I love waterfall hikes and listening to the sound of calm, running water. The added challenge on these hikes is the multiple stream crossings. I brought some hiking poles which helped with balance and probing for loose rocks and logs. If you want to get parking in the lower lot, it's best to come before 8AM. We found parking in the second lot. An Adventure Pass or Day Pass is required. Parking is enforced. A car received a ticket for being in a No Parking zone. The start of the trail is nicely shaded. The second half is a hilly, narrow, sun exposed path which routes back into the canyon toward the Lower Switzer Falls. I'm glad they had fencing on some narrow and steep parts of the trail. We encountered an active rattlesnake which headed down the mountain, so be on the lookout. Overall, the hike takes about 3 hours for 5.5 miles. The additional hike back up to the parking lot was about 1/4 of a mile. Note: if you need to use the restroom, it's best to bring your own toilet paper and to go before you start your hike. It was kind of smelly, but if you gotta go... you gotta go.

This place is great for fully appreciating nature! The trail is around 5-5.5 miles round trip,…read moredepending on where you park. What impressed me most about this trail is that it's almost fully covered by shade. We went in the late afternoon, and I'd say probably 80-85% of it is covered. Very impressive! Here are some useful tips: 1. There are three parking lots: two are next to the highway, and one is near the hiking entrance. I'd recommend getting a parking pass if possible. 2. There are only three restrooms at the beginning of the trail, so use them when you see them. 3. If you're aiming to go to the waterfall, make sure to look for the signs. Some signs aren't very clear, so we had to stop and ask other hikers frequently. Luckily, people there are super friendly and happy to help. Just pay attention to your surroundings. 4. The trail is dog-friendly, but dogs must be on a leash. 5. Waterproof hiking boots are recommended. All in all, it's a fun trail. It's a great place for a picnic and camping, and it's very close to the stream. Great for kids, families, and pets!

SHUTTLE AWAY!!…read more Continuing the Conditioning Hike Series of reviews. Several months ago, me and The Crew were headed to the backcountry on a strenuous backpacking trip. To prepare, I wanted to do some conditioning hikes to decrease my chances of having to be airlifted out. This was one of the trails I did several times prior to the trip. Back when I was a wee hiker, The Crew planned a shuttle hike. What the heck is a shuttle hike?!?!?! STATS: Distance: 6.5 miles Time: 2.5-3 hours Elevation Gain: 1700 ft. Rating: Intermediate, not for beginners Trail: Fire Road, Non-maintained Fire Road and Single Track w/very little shade. Just northeast of Griffith Park lie the Verdugo Mountains. Like Griffith Park, there are a freakton of trails, some are maintained and well-traveled, some are not. Like the trails at Griffith Park, the trails in the Verdugo's are not all that shaded, and it gets super hot haulin yourself up an ascent to capture a 180+ view of the city below, not to mention, watch as planes arrive and depart Bob Hope Airport, as the sun sets. If the air is clear enough, you can see the sun dipping itself into the ocean as its glow illuminates on the water. Fast forward years of hiking with The Crew, I learned quickly and almost the hard way what a shuttle hike entailed. I also learned that I'm not the only one who goes through this growing pain. Anywhoo, while hikes are up and back, or in and out, or point A to point A, where the starting and ending points are the same, a shuttle hike is a one-way hike and takes a more planning and organizing than a one-way hike. Everyone meets with their cars at the ending point, hikers pile into as few cars as possible, and carpool to the starting point/trailhead. The route mapped out should lead hikers back to the initial meeting point and drive those whose cars parked at the trailhead are carpooled back. Most often, The Crew does shuttle, or loop likes, one-way is typically on backpacking trips. The Skyline trail is in the Verdugo's, and just as every trail, can be one-way, however, The Crew makes it a car shuttle hike. So we left some cars at our initial meeting point, in this case, Brand Park. A short ride down the street and around the bend, to a residential area is where we began our hike. The track is overgrown and a bit challenging in a few spots, but rewards hikers with some outstanding scenes of the Burbank and Glendale areas, and a nice steady incline, great for conditioning. The trail back down to our cars is the rutted firebreak that connects Beaudry to the library and can be a bit dangerous, but there are other, safer trails that lead back to the Brand Park, should you choose to do a car shuttle. Otherwise, y'all can return the same way you came, and make it a one-way hike. DISCLAIMER: Hiking is not something that can be taken lightly. It can be life-threatening as you see and hear on the news, people die or get lost all time. Please, if you are going to hike, never go alone and prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Remember when going for a hike, no matter how short you think it may be, always be prepared. Carry at least two liters of water for every five miles (more if the weather is warm), protein bar, nuts, and electrolytes. Wear sturdy lug sole shoes and protective clothing. Some areas the weather can change quicker than a firefighter can put on his gear. It is also very important, always always always let a family member or friend know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Lastly, have fun when you hike it up.

It is 8.4-miles roundtrip with a 1900-foot elevation change from the trailhead to Verdugo Peak, the highest point on the range. For the biggest experience, try a loop of Skyline Trail to Verdugo Peak and back down Wildwood Canyon which can be done in 8.8 miles with a 2200-foot change. The trail mostly runs on the northern side of the ridge. There is some shade from the ridge, but that land mass also lessens the view of Burbank. Views are mostly of the canyon with shots of Glendale. Of course, reaching the top has a view of most of Los Angeles. Compared to Stough Canyon, Wildwood Canyon, and Brand Park, this is the least busy of the trailheads that go into the Verdugo Mountains from Burbank. Wear long pants to protect the legs. Although the trail is clear, it's not heavily maintained. Parking is on a city street around condos.

Parking: I parked on the street on Elmwood which is the beginning of the trail, but I don't highly recommend it. It's not a particularly well maintained street and it is super narrow and steep without proper curbs/sidewalks. There is also a sign that says 'Tow Away on Red Flag Days'. Refer to the affixes picture. If I returned, I would either park on the street prior to Elmwood or just skip to a different segment.

My friend and I were looking for a hiking trail. Being a L.A. native I haven't hiked this trail,…read moreever. It's been on my list forever and why I haven't been here is beyond me. I put it in my gps and found parking pretty easily. As we got off I noticed we can do the reservoir trail, which is flat gravel, and goes around the lake or we can hike up the mountains to the Hollywood sign. Being that it's summer we decided to do the flat trail that was surrounded by shade. As soon as we walked in my friend haven't noticed but I saw a deer really close to us. We sat in silenced for a while, it was beautiful. Since there is a fence around the reservoir I'm sure most animal will be on the other side, where the trees and mountains are. So it's not close enough where you can touch it. The walk is a 3 mile loop, very beautiful!!!! I mean we were in absolutely aw of the nature, trees, lake, wild life, just everything. Also I think it was very nice that it was my first time exploring. I definitely can't wait to come back again.

Not really safe from city thieves! my car was broken into twice with stuff in my bags stolen. Very odd because I wasn't suspicious of that place because it's a very nice area and I been coming here for years. At first, I wasn't able to pinpoint this was the place my things were stolen for two reasons: the thieves did not take my bags, instead they opened the bags and removed the credit cards and cash I had. Which prevented me from noticing immediately. And second reason was there was no clear signs of break in until the second time my glove box was left open and my bags moved around. I think the thieves are professionals of some sort and know there way around the alarm or the door key holders because I definitely locked my car both times my stuff was stolen

BEWARE! CAR BREAK-INS! DO NOT leave valuables in the car!!…read moreMy car got broken into today, 31 May 2026 around 12-2pm. After the hike, I noticed the lock on my car door handle fell off and immediately sensed something wrong and checked my bag. They took hundreds of dollars in cash and all of my credit/debit cards. I have to take my car into the auto shop to get fixed as well. I was not aware of this trailhead being notorious for car break-ins. I was actually trying to hike Condor Peak Trailhead but couldn't find it and ended up at Trail Canyon. I had absolutely no cell signal so I couldn't even do a quick Google search on this trailhead. My first time going into a hike blind and I got robbed. I'm guessing the thieves camp out near the parking and scope out their victims. I parked right in front of the start of the trailhead. I will NOT be returning to this hike. Be careful, stay vigilant.

The first part of the trail, down to the creek and along the creek, was not too hard and actually pretty enjoyable. Crossing the creek several times was fun, and there were some nice shaded areas along the way. We also saw a California newt, which was really interesting -- but please do not touch them. Later, when we finally had internet again, we read that their skin produces a toxin, so it's best to admire them from a safe distance. The harder part starts after you climb above the creek. From there, the trail leading toward the waterfall becomes narrow and slippery, and on the right side there are steep drop-offs almost the entire way. The final descent to the waterfall was the biggest challenge for me. You have to go down along the rock with a rope for support, but honestly it did not look safe at all, so we decided not to go all the way down to the base of the waterfall. I would not bring children on this hike. Also, be prepared that the round trip can take around 3.5 hours depending on your pace. A few helpful things to know: * parking was along the road * there are no restrooms * tickets/permits need to be purchased in advance in a different place * internet service was very poor, so it's better to download your map ahead of time * there were not many people, which was nice The waterfall was full and rushing, and the views were beautiful, but personally I would not do this hike a second time.

We finally experienced the free Shakespeare performances in Griffith Park, and it was so much more…read morethan just a play--it was a whole summer evening experience. People arrive early with blankets, picnic baskets, snacks, and drinks, creating such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere before the show even begins. A few tips from our experience: There is a large free parking lot, and it's well organized with bright signs leading you all the way to the performance area. Even though it was our first visit, finding the venue wasn't difficult--it just felt like a fun little adventure! Even on a Wednesday, the crowd was surprisingly large, so arriving early is definitely worth it. (Independent Shakespeare Co.) Bring a blanket, but don't forget a small cushion! The performance lasts over two hours, and sitting on the ground can get uncomfortable. If you're bringing folding chairs, please sit toward the back so everyone can enjoy the view. There is a 20-minute intermission, giving you plenty of time to stretch your legs, grab a snack, or refill your tea. It gets much cooler after sunset, so bring a light jacket or something warm to throw over your shoulders. A thermos of hot tea is a great idea too. Feel free to bring food and drinks, but be prepared to share your picnic with a few curious bees and other insects. There is a portable restroom on-site, and if it's locked, the access code is 3343. The production quality really impressed us. Professional lighting, excellent sound, microphones--it honestly felt like watching a performance in a real theater, just under the stars. Video recording isn't allowed during the performance, so you can simply relax and enjoy the moment. The host also shared some exciting news--they're building a brand-new stage nearby, and there's a good chance next season's performances will take place there. We'll definitely be back in August for The Comedy of Errors. If you're looking for one of the most unique free summer experiences in Los Angeles, this is one I highly recommend.

There are so many trails and areas of the park that it would take several days to cover it all.
