I highly recommend stopping by especially if you're vegetarian as they are very very accommodating. I got the black widow roll and substituted crab with shiitake and they were very willing to do that and also substitute any of the tempura nonvegetarian rolls with tempura veggies. Our server was Georgia and she was the best! Very sweet and also really understanding about dietary restrictions and accommodating. Catching up on Yelp reviews in 2024. I have been to Sushi X once and I have ordered delivery multiple times. Sushi X has become one of my favorite sushi places in Chicago and it's off the beaten path away from the West Loop and Wicker Park. The first time I went was to celebrate one of my friend's birthdays and he had a huge crowd of about 20+ people so we took up pretty much the entire restaurant. Sushi X is BYOB. Ambiance is pretty dark and almost felt like a nightclub and there is some cool artwork on the walls. The rolls are pretty creative and the special rolls are pretty big. Regular rolls are about $8-$10 while special rolls are about $15-$20. Again, the special rolls are pretty big. They do a roll of the month where a special roll is $12, which is a nice discount. Rolls are packed with rice, which make them pretty filling. Sushi is very fresh and I love their Nigiri. Overall, I am very glad that my buddy introduced me to Sushi X. I have had numerous times and it has been great every time. Service was adequate and I haven't had any delivery issues. I will pretty much eat any rolls and I tend to stick to salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and crab for Nigiri, which are all excellent. Prices are fair for Chicago and portion sizes of the rolls are big so this is actually pretty good value. Definitely give Sushi X a try! read more

Even though it not too far from where I live, I had never been to Sushi X. We've been going to the places we've known and hadn't ventured out beyond the familiar. Well, I'm glad I did dinner here the other day, because we have another sushi place that's in the circle of sushi places now. Now, in terms of vegetarian sushi options. Well, they have a whole menu area for veggie sushi, which is nice. This section is like the simplistic veggie sushi's most places have, such as one of avocado, cucumber, mushroom, etc. They're basic options, but not something I seek. When we asked about more specialty roles at Sushi X, I found that they had one option listed on the menu and a couple of other great options where they were flexible and even made some recommendations. Buddha Roll - this is the on-menu specialty sushi. It was good. I enjoyed it. Godzilla - This was a recommendation from the waiter. He suggested this was one of the most popular rolls and we could just substitute tempura sweet potato in for the main meat/fish. This ended up being our favorite. Really good and I think the cream cheese made all the difference on this one. So good. One of these substituted rolls we had to "remove" multiple items. For example, shrimp, fish, fish eggs, bacon, etc. that's across the Godzilla and the Maui Waui, which bring me to the next roll. Maui Waui - This was something unique and it caught our eye, because it had fresh mango and fresh pineapple in the roll, which is really unique. It was pretty good. BTW, this was also a sweet potato tempura sub. Oh, before even getting to the sushi's we had the veggie gyoza and they were excellent. Really spicy and flavorful. Loved them. The sauce they come with was awesome as well. That's another thing - every item came with a special sauce and I really enjoyed that. The Maui Waui came with basically the sweet-sour dipping sauce, and one of the other rolls also came with a sauce. Loved the idea of mixing and matching sauces to see what we really ended up liking. Of course there's the soy sauce with wasabi that you always do with sushi, as well. On to the waiter. Our server was pretty interesting. Very cheery and funny and happy kind of a guy. I'd say, a pretty different server experience that you get at most restaurants. As referenced previously, he was good with recommendations, flexible, etc. I got the feeling from the staff walking around that this was a place opened and run by a few friends. It's a good vibe that way. The place itself is kind of a strange kind of hole-in-the-wall type place. It's kind of strange shaped property on the inside. Kind of crooked / angular. They play somewhat loud music for a lively vibe. If I recall, the walls are like painted black. It's a pretty unique spot and definitely a different experience than some of the nearby sushi spots. I'll definitely be coming back to Sushi X. Thanks for making it s special visit and you have a new customer for sure. Here is yet another place for sushi in a city full. If looking for a chill hip place to get this delicacy, come here. Sushi X is just east of the Expressway on Chicago Avenue close to the Blue Line station. Just so happened to be around here so it was convenient. They had just opened up for lunch so we came in and got a table. As with many of these sushi restaurants, there's a menu of contemporary and more traditional rolls, most with some kind of fish. It has a few vegetarian ones. This made choosing pretty easy though. It's $5 for most rolls, which is good. We got an Avocado Roll and a Spinach Roll. Both were awesome. The Avocado Roll was pretty typical, except this one had sesame seeds. Basically if you've had one this isn't much different, but you know what you're getting. The Spinach Roll was more unique. It's seasoned with garlic, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. This was the first time we ever had this type. Good enough. The spinach thankfully wasn't wilted like we thought it could have been like. Cool little place for sushi and some other appetizers. It closes between lunch and dinner Mondays to Fridays. They're open for dinner only on the weekends. read more

The chicken katsu for example was way too breaded and could barely taste any of the actual meat. The R.O.K dish was way too salty. The sushi does; however, did taste decent. For the quality of food and the pricing I would say it's pretty reasonable. Reason why I gave this a 3 stars is because I told them ahead of them that we were celebrating a birthday and even reminded the waiter during our dining duration. This spot in Chicago is a cute little place for sushi! The space intimate and great for a hang out dinner/date night! Be forewarned, this place does not sell any alcohol. So if you like some sake with your sushi, it's BYOB (bring your own booze). I was a little sad I couldn't have some sake with my sushi! But still was good and fun without it! The food is pretty good, taste fresh and full of flavour. I don't remember exactly which rolls we ordered, but we did order 3 rolls and one had mango, which was incredible! Everything cam out fresh, hot food was nice and hot. Service was good, with host coming by every few minutes to top off water, tea or simply check up on you. Because it's a small space, you get lot of attention from staff. Ambiance was fun, with EDM music playing, making me want to dance more than eat [maybe that's why they don't sell alcohol ;) ] ! But over all a fun space. As for price, it was very reasonable and inexpensive. Parking is public on street. So I just I'm coming off of a 2 and 1/2 day virgin vacation in Chicago. I saw a lot over the weekend, and stumbled into here as it's my last night and it's right next to my Airbnb, and I love sushi. Yet this is a review I'm going to immediately write because this place is fabulous!! I just had the Godzilla roll. This is like super candy sushi! Really tasty...my brain at one point spun off into some sushi haven heavenly universe with dancing fish in the sky while eating it; it must've been the (fabulous) club music playing... In spite of the nightclub vibes, keep in mind this a BYOB venue. Also keep in mind, this fabulous Godzilla roll is on the menu in June, and then it's rotated out, to entice you to come back. Something is off with this place. Friends made a reservation for a small party. It was for 6-8 people, it is a small place. Saturday night. There were no other diners. Cash only. BYOB. 6-7 workers. That's a lot of workers for at most 8 people. It felt off. It's not an old school place that "that's how they have always operated" it just seemed sketchy. Clean. Nice staff. All the food went to go. My fiancé and I didn't take anything to go. I just don't consider this a legitimate business. They also close early so it can't be a drunk food place. Do you sushi x. Handle business how it needs to be handled, but I'm not sure how you can pay your employees for one small party, no liquor sales, and NO one else there on a Saturday night that closed early. The bill was $100, but between 6-8 people? That's nothing and in cash. Not my style. I love paying cash and go to legitimate cash only places. I admit I am not a sushi aficionado, but I AM a snob when it comes to basic California rolls. Crab salad only! No crab stick for me! So when I saw "fresh crab" in the description, I had to try Sushi X. If that is fresh crab...I have no idea what I've been eating at seafood restaurants. The only flavor I tasted was bland fish. It was off-putting enough that I picked the "crab" out of half my rolls. The peanut butter pie was fine, but not enough to redeem the cost of this sad sushi delivery. read more

I am a big fan of this place. From the service to the quality of food down to the location and accessibility. I come here often, and I am always greeted with a smile and I get to be seated immediately, most of the time I don't have a reservation, but Calling wouldn't be hurtful. This place is cozy and seats probably 50 or less people. There is plentiful paid street parking. My favorites that I like to get is the salad with the ginger cream dressing, I know it sounds weird, but it is so delicious. I like getting the red chicken. I like to get the tempura vegetables and tempura shrimp, these are so delicious and a wonderful start to every meal. We enjoy getting the Godzilla roll and whatever rolls they really have on special because all their fish is fresh and iron. trust my palate to the halves of the sushi maker. Pricing is fair. It's a highly creative and compelling menu of delicious rolls that is a break from the monotony of the California or spicy tuna roll. You can buy those at a supermarket. Why bother? I've been a couple times and ordered for delivery and I love their rolls. There are only a couple places I've been to that have better and they're fantastically expensive. Back in town with a hankering for the sush, I ordered up a delivery feast. I hadn't had Sushi X before but had high hopes based on their positive reiews. Their gyoza was one of the best I've had in a long while! Steamed with some great black pepper seasoning then pan seared so just the right amount of barely-there-crisp. At $6 the price is right on this item and it didn't disappoint. The Shitake mushroom roll ($5) was a bit weak. Small and a bit piddly and something just tasted a little off about it. Rolling was very weak and all over the place. Price was on point the roll? Not so much. Lava Roll ($13) - Now I love the idea of Zero Rolls! They have a few to pick from that don't have any rice in them. This particular roll has spicy tuna, cream cheese, scallions inside then tempura deep fry dipper, topped with some eel sauce. Sounds great, right? It just didn't taste delicious to me. Spice level was just right though. Honey Roll ($9) was another that sounded good in theory but it just didn't taste that great. White tuna and tempura flakes on the inside with a tiny bit of honey-sesame mayo on the outside. I don't know what happened but it it didn't work. Now the Chocolate peanut butter Cup ($6) dessert was really good! It may be priced a dollar too high but it actually was a very rich and tasty dessert with excellent execution Sixty dollars later, the best things of the meal were definitely my appetizer and the dessert. Honestly each of my rolls, something just seemed a little off. I love sushi and I wasn't clamoring to finish any of the rolls. Plus every item was a dollar or two too much. Meh. My normal sushi delivery place is closed on Mondays so I gave Sushi X another shot. I ordered 4 rolls, two special and two basic. The hamachi is far past acceptable freshness with a terrible aftertaste and the salmon is so old that it is more gray than orange. The one roll with the warm cream cheese is actually delicious but I can't believe places justify sending out fish like this so I'm going to X out this place for future consideration. read more

Meh. I had three rolls, the first two on special: spicy tuna, double stack, and yellow tail. The latter two rolls were very good, but the spicy tuna tasted a bit strange, to me. Maybe it was supposed to taste that way. I ate it, and didn't get sick. It simply tasted weird. Maybe some unique spice combo I don't appreciate. At the end of the meal, that's the impression I was left with: the roll I didn't like. Maybe if I'd ordered something different, I'd be giving them 4 stars now. But they'll likely never get that opportunity. I'm a tourist, and even if I take another trip to Chicago, I'll likely want to try different places. Came here during the week with a group of 10 people. The inside is very small with our party taking up more than half of the seating. They offer your typical variety of sushi which was very good.
