Strick's has been around for years and is so close to the USM campus that both students and locals keep it going. In addition to various smoked meats they also have some seafood and other menu items like crawfish and poboys. Last time I was there, my wife and I shared some Swap Nachos and it was amazing. They take regular nachos with cheese, then cover it when fried shrimp, then ladle a healthy portion of gumbo over the top to add more shrimp and also sausage. It's so incredibly good with how all the flavors blend together, and quite large. My go-to order and most BBQ places is a combo of brisket and pulled pork, and Strick's does it right. The meat is flavorful with a great bark, plus they have three signature sauces to kick them up if needed. They have various standard sides like baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and more. Also included is a mini muffin of cornbread, and I always get the jalapeno cheese option. The inside of this place is decorated with a lot of old signage and has a very country feel that perfectly fits the laid back atmosphere and food. I will say as my first visit, I found the girl at the counter not very friendly or helpful to the people from Florida:( she kept saying "what would you like?" ...... they had to say this is our first time here. I got my food suggestions and helpful advice from another person standing in line. I liked my dirty bird sandwich, we also tried the fried okra and Mac and cheese. It doesn't stop there, as they are a great place for seasonal Cajun dishes like hot boiled crawfish and red beans and sausage. If you love crawfish but don't want to go to the trouble of doing a big boil, Strick's is the spot. I've saved the best for last though. The homemade old-fashioned cakes are fantastic. I don't understand all the negative reviews. This is my second time eating Strick's, and both times were good experiences. The first was far too long ago, so to celebrate something I decided to come here. We dined in this evening. There weren't too many customers; probably more were waiting to pick up their carry-out orders than were dining in. The place was clean, except for a recently-vacated table, which staff soon cleared. My children entertained themselves perusing the license plates and other knick-knacks nailed to the walls. The murals are OK, too. We ordered platters (brisket, chicken, combination, ribs) and everyone was satisfied. My wife ordered the chicken; it had clearly been smoked, and tasted delicious. We'd never had anything like it before; I don't like chicken, but this was good! My brisket was OK, and my daughters loved their platters. The banana pudding was serviceable, though I've had better. (It did feature bananas, which some other local dives' puddings tend to lack.) The french fries were excellent; a daughter kept stealing mine, even though her macaroni and cheese was reportedly fantastic, if a little too cheesy. The potato salad had a tinge of vinegar if you like that sort of thing (I do!), but the cole slaw was somewhat disappointing. We also tried the cakes, which so many reviewers praise, but I thought they were only OK. A customer who was waiting for her pickup order told me the strawberry cake is fantastic, but they didn't have that this evening. All in all, this was a good choice for an evening's meal. The prices weren't great, but neither were they unreasonable, and the BBQ was fine. We'll likely come again in due course. read more

Pretty much our go-to buffet for a few years now. Fall 2018 during soccer season, 7 out of 8 soccer Saturdays ended with lunch buffet at Stricks, and it never got old. Love the fact that they change it up each week, if only just a little bit. Our kids love it as well, the diversity of the offerings. Great casual place to take the family. We use to go to Hattiesburg a lot when our daughter was at Southern Miss. Stricks was always a favorite. 8 years later and we are getting our rental house ready to sale and have been making the trip every week. We have eaten at Stricks 5 times in 9 weeks! it is the best BBQ we have ever had. The white potato salad is delicious and my husband says the beef brisket and fried okra is the best he's ever had. The deserts are beautiful and, according to my husband, delicious. The restaurant is rustic and charming with a wonderful staff. We may have to make an occasional 2 1/2 hour trip when ho hum BBQ won't do. The servings are huge so be prepared to get a to go box. read more

Despite it's popularity, I never tried it until 2013 (by the way, I've lived in Hattiesburg 32 years). Needless to say, I heard about their cakes and had to give them a shot! Well, the red velvet cakes is AMAZING!!!! But their BBQ....ummm not so much. I am AMAZED better yet I'm FLABBERGASTED at the size of the crowd each and every time I pass by or stop by to order a piece of cake. I commend them on their ability to corner the market and establish a strong consistent customer base, I just wonder how in the heck they did it!!!! If you want cake, whether a slice or a whole Strick's is the place but If you want BBQ, go to LEATHA's or if you want something quick head to Dickies. We have been eating here 2 times and always had a good time. The atmosphere was nice, not very clean but decent. The restroom was clean. We didn't have to give a tip since they provided paper plate, plastic utensils, and plastic cup. We just threw them after finished eating and got a new one. The choice of food is not too many but they maintained the taste as a home cooking food. The last time we came here, we didn't get to eat their smoked beef brisket. Not sure why they didn't serve more coz I saw they still had a lot of people coming in. We may come back someday, probably after new year to see if they keep their style or improve. read more

We googled what we thought was gonna be a great night of BBQ and stopped in for dinner. We went up to the counter and ordered our food, 2 adults and 1 2 year old and our order came to $44.00 which was a lot but I figured what the hell, if it's great food I'm okay with that. We get our food and just the presentation alone was enough to make want to leave but I never judge a book by it's cover but I'm this case it would have been correct. I have never in my life had BBQ that tasted as bad as this did and I'm big boy lol and I love to eat. But me being a low key guy I always keep my opinion to myself when it comes to telling servers what I think about food but In this case since the food was this bad and it was so much I had to. I came from Ohio passing through Hattiesburg, Ms. I am originally from Ms. and went to Southern Miss a few (lol) years back. I was craving some crawfish, so I began searching the internet for some comfort. Knowing it was late in the crawfish season, I thought my search would be futile. But to my pleasant suprise I found Stricks Original B bque. Although I concentrated most of energy towards my passion of consuming crawfish, I found the B bque to be quite tasty as well as all the other offerings. I usually don't write about my culinary experiences , seeing my wife is the cook in the family, but I have to say these were some of the best crawfish I have had in awhile. We hadn't been out much so we wanted to go back to Stricks and try their brisket. We ordered the brisket platter with cole slaw and baked beans. I'm glad we got the sides as they were excellent. When the platter came, the brisket was in a foil pan sitting in "juices?" It was a watery liquid and all the brisket was covered by it. The brisket was an unusual gray color, had no flavor, no smell of BBQ and way too much fat/gristle. We won't be back. read more
