Stopped here for breakfast on our way out of Richmond by recommendation. The location is easy to find, right on the corner of an intersection. We were able to find street parking near by. There was a line but we managed to get in and out pretty quickly. The inside is pretty cool -- you have a direct view of their process as you can see behind the bar to the baristas, and also a giant oven in the back where they make their breads/ pastries. I ordered an iced coffee and chocolate almond pastry. The iced coffee is really good, a bit on the strong side. The pastry is EVERYTHING. Yes. Everything. Would recommend. Solid 4.5 stars! We came on Sunday afternoon. I really wanted to try Fig and cheese but they were already sold out :( we ended up getting salami and cheese, spiced apple tart, almond chocolate croissants, and pain au chocolat. My boyfriend got latte. The pastries were amazing in flavors. Very crunchy on the outside and rich in butter on the inside. I went to culinary school and have been in the business for 35 years. The food is excellent. You will need to go early and honestly be ready to order and go. The food is definitely 5-star quality. The people are super nice. Here's one recommendation that I think is important, based on my experience seeing it happen to many businesses: This was my first time there. The person shouldn't assume I had been there before. I'm sure most customers are repeat visitors, and they are welcomed back all the time. A warm welcome and introduction to the store, if needed, should happen. I was excited and just kept ordering. The person helping me, in a nice way, mentioned that there's an 8-pastry maximum. I said, 'Good to know, and thank you.' I just think taking customers for granted is not a good mindset and could be dangerous. A warm welcome and asking, 'Have you been here before?' allows the staff to know how to continue the conversation. My foodie friend told me that she planned her vacation in Richmond around Sub Rosa, so I had been dying to try this place out. While I had high hopes of ordering everything, I was foiled by (1) the 8 pastries per person limit and (2) half of the pastries being sold out when we got there around 1:30! Nonetheless, the other pastries I tried were amaazing. I loved both the chocolate almond and almond croissants. The lamination is perfect - sooo buttery, nutty and flaky... and there was something extra in the layers that was really special. Too bad for my New Years resolution because I definitely had too much of it! I think these are my favorite almond croissants now, replacing Maison Kayser in NYC. Big line around 8:15am on a Saturday morning and it was a good sign this place is something special. Line moved quickly and we had our choice from around 12 pastries. Several things had already sold out by the time we ordered at around 8:30am. The Lamb Borek was amazing, so many great flavors. The Almond Croissant was probably the best I have ever eaten, unbelievably flaky, crispy and filled moist almond goodness. The quiche had an amazing crust and the seasoned eggs were like butta. When we got there they were sold out around 1245 (which we didn't understand because in the video they said they bake fresh all day and they don't close until 5pm) The sign just said out and didnt give any more info and online it says nothing about having to be there extremely early. We went inside and the employees just stared at us and didn't say a single word. The char on the crust is due to being baked in a wood oven. I have been here multiple times and this bakery is a must visit. Everything that I order is heavenly delicious and perfectly baked. It's simply one of the best bakeries I've been to from DC to NYC to Timbuktu - PERIOD. One of my favorites is this pinwheel shaped Fig & Manchego Pastry. It is as delightful to eat as it is to look at! I'm a sucker for anything fig so when I saw that it was combined with manchego cheese inside a croissant- like exterior, it was basically "game over" on my intermittent fast!
