We hired Fernando in November to fabricate and install kitchen counter tops, as well as a tub deck…read moreand riser, all cut out of the same slab. We bought this slab only after verifying with him that he could do it at a reasonable price. In my initial conversation with him we talked about an under-mounter farmhouse sink as well as an under-mounted tub. We then had a cabinet delay of three months. When Fernando came in April to template he said that he did not know the tub was to be under-mounted and that it would be a bit extra to finish the inside edge. We thought that would be minor. He took our deposit and cashed the check. He then sent a revised estimate for 25% more than his original one. We balked a bit and asked for an explanation and he said that the original estimate did not include the under-mounted sink or the under-mounted tub, even though that was in my original email to him. He also refused to do the job (at any price). I strongly suspect that what really happened is that he realized that he couldn't do the job with only one slab given the cutting tools he has... We then had to find a new fabricator. This was challenging because Fernando (and Pietra Fina, who we bought the slab from and who recommended Fernando) refused to transport the slab. (As a side issue, I believe there is some funny business going on between the two.) Fernando also decided to lie about us to fabricators who were thinking about taking the job. Several of them mentioned the things he said and we only overcame this by showing them our entire set of correspondence with him (which was almost exclusively via email). He also did not want to be present when I came with the new fabricator to pick up the slab and actually tried to refuse to let me come to pick up my own materials. This is all particularly odd given that we really liked Fernando and may well have proceeded with him, despite the hefty price hike. The saga continued even after we got the slab back (in decent condition). Fernando, when he refused to proceed with us, said he would give us back $1000 of our $1200 deposit, with $200 being his charge for templating (on a contract that he walked away from). Nearly three weeks after he said he would return the $1000, he still had not, so I wrote to him and had to ask him to send the money. I also asked him to return the other $200, since he was the one who broke our contract. He did send a check for $1000, but at this point we're probably going to have to file a CSLB complaint. What a mess. My advice to others is simply to avoid him... unless of course you're into drama and/or bait & switch.
