What a great place to host our kid's birthday party! I booked a mini party in advance for 10 people and was greeted by a party host at the door. We were shown to our reserved tables and checked in to start our round of golf right away. I had already pre ordered our food and it was ready when we finished our round. After that, it was an hour at the arcade - which was perfect for this group of 9 year olds - who were each given a separate card. Love the venue, the service and the fun! Pretty small little place, but there are still 18 holes of golf, a few pool tables, two air hockey tables, some older video games and maybe half a dozen pinball machines. It has been a long wait for the return of Subpar to Alameda and I am really happy it is back. The course has a cool Bay Area theme to it. Some holes are really tough to hit par on, where others you can get a hole in one even if you are not a skilled golfer. They have a nice looking bar for grownups or parents looking to have a drink with cup holders at each hole. The arcade is new with games that are fun for all ages with no overly violent games like you can find at other family fun locations. There is a large space for parties too. I really enjoyed my time here and would highly recommend this for a date, family time, or even just hanging out with friends. read more

Such a great little place! Came here on a Fri night with a party of 6, around 9pm. We were here until about 10:45 going at a steady pace but not rushing with our whole group. It's such a cute little place, they had glow in the dark mini golf this Friday and it wasn't crowded at all (which may be why their last day of business is Nov 18??? They had signs saying this posted everywhere which makes me super sad!) 18 pretty fun holes of golf with ridiculous trick shots that are super entertaining (like one sonic the hedgehog style one), not boring courses. The wall decor and the holes are also based on things in the Bay Area, like Oakland's port or Lombard St. in San Francisco, and the wall paintings are super detailed and nice. Glow in the dark is super fun, you get different colored glow in the dark golf balls. You can also redo holes (the 18th hole doesn't just eat your ball the way some other mini golf places do). Park on the street! Has air hockey and DDR in the arcade as well. read more

My BF and I were in the mood to play mini golf but thought it was too cold to go to be outdoors and thought it would be cool to go to an indoor mini golf area. There is also an arcade, billiards, and an electric car track. There are 18 mini holes in total and it had a cute Bay Area theme. I liked on the back on the scorecard it gave a course description of each hole. The holes were small but some were actually a bit challenging. They're also kind of close to each other but it's pretty much what I would have expected for an indoor mini golf. Overall it a fun, cheap activity and I liked the theme. The arcade had outdated games but I liked seeing they have a NickToon Racing game because my brother and I loved that PC game when we were kids. I also think it would be nice if everything was updated a bit. read more

Brought my son here and we both had a great time! The holes were all very different from ones seen at outdoor mini golf places, which was super refreshing. It was a cold day so I searched for indoor kids activities and thought we'd try this place out. As we walked inside, we were hit with an obnoxious odor; possibly mold. We were a bit hesitant to stay, but having driven so far we gave it a shot. We decided to try the arcade games first as there was a large group at the first hole. The games are very outdated, but if you like 80's style arcade games you will reminisce over your childhood as you play. There's a couple of pool tables, air hockey and foosball table for the older crowd too. The slot car track seemed like a cool option for our son so we gave it shot. Unfortunately, the pace of the car isn't controlled so much by the hand control, but by the track and the intensity the staff put it at. Even at full throttle, each time the car went for a turn it would slow down and then speed up on the straight away. Cute concept with the Bay Area artifacts used for the golf course and the murals of the cities scenery as a backdrop, but it lacks space and is a bit rundown. The course was fun and it had some nice challenges, but as we neared hole 13 my husband began to have an allergy attack caused by the old building...mold. We finished up and made sure to wash up before high tailing it out of there. read more

As our first Mini Golf experience, I have to admit, it was not too bad! They have arcade games (no prizes), pool billiards, and mini-golf! We started the night out by playing pool upstairs. Goodness, it was so hot upstairs. They really need to consider getting A/C. The pool tables are really old. It dispenses the balls out one at a time, so you'd have to wait a few seconds if you scratch. We were getting impatient, so we stopped playing after 30min. The Mini Golf course was pretty cool! They had a Glow-in-the-Dark type of theme, making it a little bit difficult to see the course. I love how each hole was an East Bay landmark!! It would've been nice if we were able to see all of the designs in detail. They only have about 18 holes, which is a good amount for an in-door mini golf place. We came here on a Saturday Night and it was pretty empty, which meant no lines/waiting for the next hole! Overall, a cool place to check out for a short game of in-door mini golf! read more

Miniature indoor golf for three is $20 for an hour of fun. There are 18 holes all made of main attractions of the Bay Area. It progressively gets challenging as you complete each hole. Along with the indoor golf, there is an arcade upstairs and down, and a mini car racing table. What's nice is they have a dollar changer specifically for your parking meters. For our first time the kids and man enjoyed quality time with each other and the other family or friends in the facility. read more

Post closing eulogy review: Subpar Miniature Golf Very bummed out when I came across the reviews that Subpar was closing. The place didn't seem to have a lot of costs as all of the course was already set and there weren't too many staff needed. I guess it's a rent thing possibly but as many have stated, the course designs for the holes were unique and original. It was not typical miniature golf designed but it was quirky and I liked it. NO AIR CONDITIONING. Chose to come on a very hot day, and there was no air conditioning inside. I will give them credit for providing iced bottled water for the customers. Some holes were not challenging, while some required more thinking. The holes are located relatively close to each other so if you hit a little too hard, the ball could go flying across the hall. This place also contains two pool tables and some arcade games. We tried the DDR machine which took 8 tokens from us. Probably from overheating, but the machine reset itself. Also, the blue side does not register the up arrow. Reported the situation for the employees and they reimbursed us with 8 tokens. We took the tokens upstairs to find skeeball. And it only cost 1 token!!!!! Customer service is nice. However, they should consider air conditioning. read more

This place is the bomb , my teenager had a blast celebrating his 16 th birthday. The place is huge , clean ,mini golf arcade laser tag pool table and very affordable food . Amazing staff and hospitality, organization. The parent had fun too, to drink some wine n chill while the kids played various games. In a heartbeat I would come again even if it's not a party. Now shout out to the manager Alicia a wonderful sweetheart that accommodated my party less than 2 weeks .She is just amazing , cheerful and organized the party like a charm in such short notice with no headache for me , the food drinks and set up , Jay coordinated the food n drinks and brought it out in time and informed the kids of their activities so they could enjoy the all the games and Katie she makes awesome personalized welcome sign for the party . SF landmark themed mini golf, small arcade, and billiards! Visited Alameda for the first time for my nephew's 4th bday party at Subpar. This place is cool! 18 holes of mini golf, some of which are tributes to famous SF landmarks (i.e. the Golden Gate bridge, Bay bridge, and Coit tower). Our party had a private side room midway into the building. The place wasn't crowded at all, maybe up to 3-4 other small groups making their rounds, but we mostly had free reign over the course. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, from 3:30-5:30pm for reference. Also something to note, a downside was that it was pretty stuffy and hot inside, and we got pretty warm and sweaty with minimal activity. There's a small arcade upstairs, along with a couple pool tables. There's a cool RC car track in the front, a throwback to electric hot wheels sets of yesteryear. Overall, cool place! Fun for a kid's bday party or just to play and hang out with friends. Check it out! read more

It's closing and I'm so sad! I loved Subpar mini golf. It's a great place to go with friends, a date, or family. All of the holes were tributes to things in the Bay Area. 880 (complete with pot holes), the Altamont pass, the maze, redwood trees, Napa wine, and of course the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge. The price was just right at $10 and they offered glow in the dark mini golf at night. I wish this place would stay open. Sad to see another local spot close. read more

Subpar Miniature Golf is fun. Yes, it looks like they spent all of about 85 cents on the place but I say that in the nicest way possible. The indoor, 18-hole mini-golf course is outfitted with reminders that you're both in the East Bay and in the Bay Area at large. The holes aren't aesthetically pleasing but each has its unique flavor: * A wind-turbine which looks like something I've seen in the East Bay hills on the way to Highway 5; * A tangle of freeway lanes not dissimilar to the Alemany Maze; * The newly built Bay Bridge;. and on and on. Watch out for hole #12 which may or may not have been Bernal Hill. Whatever it was, getting the ball to scale the rise and round the corner proved to be my Achilles heel. Hole #12 cost me the game. Speaking of cost, Subpar is priced perfectly. Weekends and Fridays hit the high-water mark of $9 with $7 fees reserved for teachers, students, military, children ages 3 - 12, and adults 55 and over. At other times general admission is $7 and $5 for all in the above categories and free if it's your birthday. The place also offers well priced slot car racing, arcade games like Skee Ball, and pool tables, none of which I tried. Unlike indoor mini-golf in San Francisco you can't putt through with a cocktail in your hand but go after a couple of cocktails (perhaps from Alameda's Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge) and you won't care. Subpar is not a place I'd like to linger in but it's a great place to kill an hour, get in some good laughs, and take some lousy swings. Is mini-golf ever not fun? I think not. read more

Bay area!! Awesome indoor golf with very realistic renditions of landmarks of the yay area, on top of that the holes are more challenging/intricate than your typical mini golf. This is fun for all ages, from my 7 year old cousin, to my 14 year old TEEN cousin to my mom (the traditional no nonsense Asian mother!). You could seriously bring anyone here Air hockey was lame, a lot of the blowers were out so the puck got stuck often. The space is really big; 18 holes of mini golf, a room dedicated for dedicated ping pong playas, air hockey tables, a bunch of arcade games, and something upstairs that I didn't really take time to explore. Brought my family here recently. We had a blast! The main attraction is the miniature golf course. It is really innovative, well designed, and fun. Way more fun than the regular run-of-the-mill mini-golf courses. The arcade is alright and a great plus, but the best part of this place is definitely the golf course. Prices are also reasonable. The reason the course is so good is that the holes are not just flat layouts with elaborate models placed on top of them. What makes the holes exciting is that the elevation changes, the routes, and the trick shots, are a large part of the model designs making for an exciting experience. Place also had air hockey and a couple of pool tables. I would recommend this place for families and first dates. Will definitely be back. read more

Came here tonight for the first time with friends for their birthday. What's awesome is that my 2 friends get a FREE round for their birthday! We waited for about half an hour, and it was a GLOW-IN-THE-DARK theme! It's $10 per person, and each Player gets a glow necklace and a glow ball. Light are off with some lights that change color slowly. It's a bit warm in here but they turn on the fans. There's a total of 18 holes and it's all Bay Area themed--very cute! There's nothing subpar about this place. In fact, this indoor mini golf course is another hidden gem in the East Bay. It has Bay Area themed holes and it's only $3 on Mondays. Plus, you can play skee ball upstairs. Yup, you read that right. Staff are friendly - they let a bunch of us Yelpers take over for a CMYE. Nothing like some good, healthy competition on the course. By the way, the Coit Tower hole is probably the hardest. I gave up after oh...7 tries. You bet I'll be back with friends in tow. Not sure how much regular prices are but you can pair golf with Mojito Mondays at Habanas for a cheap date. read more

What a fun place to be with a group. Monday's are the best days @ $3.00 for 18 holes. Grab some friends and have a blast! I did this with a large group and we all had a great time. Some of us were competitive (um hum) while others just came to socialize which is all good! Bay Area/Alameda themed them High St. Bridge and the Oakland Ship yard make cute back grounds.
