Really a disappointment. I won't lie, I order here at least once a week because there really is nothing else in Morningside. But quite frankly, their "subconscious girls" , which they are so proud of (evidenced by the signs in the store), are so rude, especially over the phone. Delivery usually takes 45-60 mins, and I live two blocks away. Today at 7AM, I waited over an hour for two croissants, and when I called to check on it the girl gave me an attitude and said "It's leaving now", no apology. I used to go here more but it seems like they changed owners and staff. The people working there dont make the subs like they used to taste. The guys have to constantly check a paper of what is in the sub and how to make it. I used to love walking in and having the same young, quiet but friendly, skinny lightskinned guy idk his name make my sub to perfection. Where did he go? I used to be able to get flat piece of chicken breast on their subs. **Now the grilled chicken is all chopped and falling out of the sub while I eat it**. I likely wont return. Also now the *prices* seem higher for all items. They now do not offer Columbia stude teacher discount which wasnt much to begin with. Today i went there because i wanted some avocado and the gpa sub seemed fitting. However as I was waiting for my food to be made, I noticed the delivery guy with his jacket on go behind the counter and grab a cucumber with his bare hands to eat it! This kind of made me cringe. I told him I saw him when i went up to pay and while he was grabbing his deliveries at the counter. The women at the register apologized for him in a genuine way which, was nice. I just always wonder when I eat out..what its like behind the scenes?! So when thats how staff acts in front of you it makes you wonder about the stuff you don't see. I have come here a handful of times because it is close to campus! When you walk in, you may be overwhelmed by the vast amount of food items you can choose from. I sure was. The names of the sandwiches are very cool and you can tell they cater to students when the sandwich names say "all nighter" sub etc.. Although it may seem like a quick lunch/dinner spot, if there are a couple of people waiting in front of you, the wait can take a good 15 minutes or more. I thought the subs were good. The philly cheese sub is memorable to me because of its generous portions of meat.I recommend eating your sub right away because the bread will get soggy if left over some time. Sadly, the cashier every time has looked as if she didn't want to be there and I consistently have had bad service when checking out. A smile can brighten someones day! read more

While wandering around the Columbia campus before my class with a rumbling stomach I randomly came into SubsConscious. Not a bad place by any means but not great either. It seems quite clean, the sandwiches are acceptable and some of them are even reasonably priced (others not so much). The quality of the sandwich I ate was not bad but you can definitely find better elsewhere (for cheaper). Acceptable for someone who would find themselves in the situation I was in however I'd suggest exploring other options, which is what I will do next week. SubsConscious is a great grab and go place and you can't go wrong with free soup! I've had the cream of broccoli and the chicken noodle and both are good. I am personally a fan of salty things, but I can see it being too salty for someone. The salads are always made very quickly and I never have a problem. I will say if you are in a rush go with the salad because the sandwiches take longer to make and people tend to wait for them. When Columbia is having PD for teachers it can tend to be more crowded but on average it is pretty quick and you can be in and out in 15 minutes. read more

It is always a big problem when ordering from SubsConscious. You call and place a order, then 10 minutes later they are calling your back to tell you that they are out of chicken, bagels, ect. Then 10 minutes after that first call, you get a second call saying they are out of something else, and you are forced to change your order once again. Going to the store is a slightly better experience. You can get a cheap breakfast sandwich, (bagel, egg, cheese, and sausage) with a drink for $4 and some change. They also have a nice selection of healthy dried fruit mixes, nuts and berries on the shelves. I did enjoy stopping in here in the mornings on my walk to work and get a small cup of grapes to snack on. Although, last time I did this, the grapes had a strong smell of garlic. YUCK. read more

The food is pretty good, but the guys who make the sandwiches aren't very smart. I don't like tomatoes, so I always order my sandwiches without them. That being said, I have never NOT had to remind them I wanted it without tomatoes as they worker is putting them on there-and of course they get an attitude about it, like you're being rude for making sure you get what you want. One time, I caught the guy making me what appeared to be the wrong sandwich but when I called him out on it he said it was the right one; the lighting is pretty dim in there at night, so I took his word for it. Of course, when I get back home it was the wrong sandwich. I probably should have checked it before I left, but I was in a rush. When I went back to get the right one, the dude played stupid. Four stars for food, two stars for pricing and service. Ordered a bacon egg and cheese sandwich, which at $4 a pop is way too much, especially since it only comes with one egg. The sandwich itself was decent, but the going rate on these is between $2.50 and $3. The fact that they included a small hot coffee with the sandwich was nice, but unnecessary and unwanted, as it is currently 84 degrees outside (and now I have to schlep a leaking coffee in a paper bag). None of the employees seem to be in a rush, which by itself isn't the worst thing in the world, but showing a little hustle would be appreciated--especially during the morning rush. read more

It's not bad for the price you pay. I just wish there was more to it. I ordered the roast beef sandwich and a small order of fries. The roast beef was so cold like it had come out of the freezer. The lack of creative artistry displayed in preparing my sandwich: get roll, splat some mayo on it, throw the meat on it followed by cheese, cut it, serve. BAM! The fries were enjoyable. Nothing memorable but they hit the right spot and did the job. Definitely think this would be 1 of their strong points. For a student or anyone looking for a reasonably priced meal around the Columbia area, definitely a good one. Make sure to get the frequent customer card. They also have a selection for custom salads and warm foods except there is always an insanely long line during lunch. I like that they have different soups for different days of the week. Although I've only been to this location a few times, I practically lived at the old location pre-closing since it was next door and open 24/7. Seeing that it's the same management and employees, I figured a review would work. Great sandwiches in my opinion. Better than anything else I've had in the area. I particularly love anything they make with breaded chicken cutlet--Spice is Nice and Bella Maria are my two personal recommendations. Salads are pretty good--fresh, and you get at least 2 meals out of the larger size (unless you need a lesson in portion-control). Unless they're different from the old location, salads are charged by weight, not by price. A good selection of drinks, chips, snacks, etc. If you're looking for a supplement to your meal, you'll probably be able to find it. Service is definitely an issue, both in person and delivery. Any time I've ordered for delivery and made a change to a sandwich (adding something, no pickles, etc.), it's almost always been wrong. Also, some of the employees are not the nicest people in the world. I've gotten attitudes for no reason from some of the cashiers before. Overall, I think the sandwiches are really good. I've seen a lot of people complain about price, but you get the same size sub from Subway for the same price, only it is not fresh and it has about half the substance. My only real complaint, other than the fact that they closed down the 108th and Broadway location, is the service. The soups are good, but how hard are soups to screw up? I had a salad here today with grilled chicken... I had about half of it before, upon swallowing my second small bone, I dumped the whole thing. It even had that terrible chicken bone taste, which only becomes really terrible when you taste it in a salad. Also, salads being a healthy alternative, I found the amount of dressing they poured on my salad way to be way too much, the lettuce was just swimming in ranch dressing. Their sandwiches are alright, nothing special, but not terrible. Overall, this is a good place to grab soup/sandwich/salad, but there are definitely some downsides. Let's start with the positive. The food is pretty good. The soup is hearty, the sandwiches are fresh and made to order, and there's a nice assortment of drinks, chips, and fruit sides to choose from. The sandwich menus is VERY extensive, with lots of options for hot or cold, as well as breakfast sandwiches, although the price for that goes up after 11am or so. The guys who work behind the counter are also very nice and will custom make pretty much anything you want. Now the not-so-positive: The lettuce for the salad is often not very fresh. (I would advise examining the pre-made lettuce bowls before choosing one.) Also, it's EXPENSIVE. Definitely over-priced, even though the portions for everything are relatively large, especially hot sandwiches. (A basic chicken salad sandwich costs almost $6.) The other real downside is that fact that it takes FOREVER to have your sandwich made. I used to occasionally order grilled cheese until I figured out that I could just go home, make one, and have time to walk back before they would be finished. If you decide to order anything hot, make sure you have at least an extra 10 minutes to spare to wait for it - and that's 10 minutes from the time you order, so if there's a line, forget about it. As many have noted, the bad service from the cashiers who apparently couldn't care less really keep this place from being the solid neighborhood sandwich shop it could be. I live right around the corner from Subs and come here multiple times a week. I've only ever ordered sandwiches - their breakfast sandwiches (which are served all day and are, in my opinion, hands-down the best in the neighborhood), chicken parmesan, and cheese steaks are my favorites. I should note that any digs at the service here are not directed at the guys who make the sandwiches. In fact, one of the main reasons I come here and tolerate the piss poor service in the front is the charming, personable attention you get from the sandwich guys. They're happy to accommodate whatever you're in the mood for (thank God for late night bacon, egg, cheddar and avocado sandwiches). That being said, the cashiers in the front need a serious attitude adjustment. When you ask them to do anything - like, say, take your payment in exchange for their services - they make you feel like it's a chore. They rarely say more than a few disgruntled words to you. The only time I have heard them make conversation is when they're talking to each other about how they don't want to be there. I'm very sensitive to the interests of employees, especially those that often have to deal with obnoxious college students. But as others have written, this service is past the point of being curt - it's just downright rude, and people are justified in being turned off by it. If this place wants to be more than a drunken drive-by, something seriously needs to be done about the customer service. read more
