I can honestly say that if it wasn't for Cumulus Sweet Deals, we would have never gone to…read moreDonatello's With A Twist in Oakdale, CT. It is an unassuming building on the side of the road, in the middle of a neighborhood. It is about 10 minutes south of Mohegan Sun. Donatello's With A Twist definitely offers a twist! They serve a wide variety of options: American breakfast, sandwiches & burgers, Puerto Rican dishes & Italian fare. Hubby enjoyed playing the free Pac-Man video game as we waited for our food. There are a couple of seats inside & a little garden outside. Most people took their food to go. There are 7 - YAAASSSSS SEVEN! - mofongo options on the menu. Ummm... yes, please! For the uninitiated, mofongo is a dish from Puerto Rico featuring plantains as its main ingredient. They are picked green, cut into pieces & typically fried, then pounded in a wooden pilón (mortar and pestle) with a variety of spices, broth & some type of cooking oil . If you are a fan of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, you know that he is a mofongo freak. I've had mofongo before & definitely enjoy it, hubby was new to the experience. We selected the Shrimp Creole Mofongo & it was spectacular. We heard the pounding of the plantains in the back as we waited for our food so I knew it was being made special for us. The mound of mofongo was flavorful, the shrimp were large & perfectly cooked in a spicy red sauce with a little salad on the side to cool things off. We also ordered the Chicharron De Pollo with Tostones. I thought it was going to be a harder fry on the chicken but the dark meat was yummi. The tostones were perfectly fried & the highlight of this dish. Hubby can't pass up a steak sandwich so he ordered a large Boricua Steak Bomb. HOLY COW! The sandwich was ginormous!!! A ton of steak with a good amount of melty cheese topped with a spicy sauce. Hubby loved it! I saw a guy order a slab of meat & I went up afterwards to inquire what it was. A perfectly fried chicharrón - fried pork belly. It was a good combination of meat, fat & crunchy bits. As a German, I was introduced to grilled schweinebauch as a kid. It is not everyone's cup of tea because of the fat content & idea of eating pig's stomach but I love it. I should have bought another one to take with me for later! Donatello's makes a number of fresh juices & we ordered the passionfruit which was a refreshingly sweet & sour combo. They also sell desserts but we were so full that I didn't even look to see what was offered. If you are in the area, I would recommend stopping by Donatello's With A Twist to try some of their special dishes. It is a celebration of flavor & culture!

With its Latin American focus, I felt like the Peruvian chicken would be the best bet. Plus it was listed first on the menu (unlike concert setlists the best isn't usually saved for last - what's the deal with The Killers opening with Mr. Brightside? - but I digress). This was superb, partly thanks to the salsa verde, but also due to the excellent basil bread. I also enjoyed the mint lemonade. The local customers, like many Yelpers, raved about the Chinese BBQ sandwich and said I should get it next time. I had a moment of indie-rock snobbery and thought I can get Chinese sandwiches anytime in NYC, but I was curious about the emphatic praise. For a second I pretended I couldn't possibly get a second sandwich. So with some self-delusion combining "I didn't eat breakfast" and "these nice people told me to get another one" I got the BBQ sandwich. It, too, was excellent, with a perfect fusing of ham, bread and sauce.

Since Pasta was in the name, I figured it might be more of a market than a grinder shop and I decided to visit. It was actually more of a grinder shop that sold some fresh pasta and sauces and things that you would expect a grinder shop to have. I honestly thought about walking out without buying anything, but I kept thinking about that awesome looking Italian Trio (basically like an Italian Combo) grinder. I decided to order a small, take some pics and a couple of bites, and save the rest for later since I had lunch plans. This grinder was my ideal Italian Combo. First off, the small was huge. Full size at most places. I ate it over the course of two days. I ordered it with lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, cucumbers, provolone, Oil and Vinegar, Salt and Pepper, and Mayo. The three meats were pepperoni, Genoa salami and capicola. The bread was good, fresh and up to the job of holding the ingredients. There were about six slices of meats, but they folded them around the inside of the bun (cut on one side) so you were really getting about 12 layers in each bite. And the inside was stuffed with the veggies and other toppings. So stuffed that the toppings fell out as you were taking bites. But that was actually great from my perspective, because you could just pick up the fallen toppings and put them exactly where you were going to bite next. I've been to a lot of highly rated grinder shops in CT. I don't think I've had a better Italian combo. The ingredients were all great. It was a well constructed sandwich. You got bits and pieces of most of the stuff in each bite. Ingredients were in the right proportion. It was salty. Acidic. Juicy. Great contrasting textures. This was a text book Italian Combo Grinder. Now if you live near Mystic, getting a grinder from Pasta Fresca is a no brainer because you can take it home. If you're not from the Mystic area, there was a bit of seating. Seating may be hit or miss though. In any event, if you can figure out where you're going to eat the Italian Trio, you're going to love it. Can't believe I've never heard of this place. 5 Stars

She ordered an omelette and toast but she didn't realize potatoes don't come with it. So after the food came out she ordered a side of potatoes. They took forever to come out. So normally a diner would have hash browns and home fries already on the griddle but this place seems to put them on the griddle made to order which is probably why this place is always packed. On the other hand the food was great. I had my waffle with butter and their house made strawberry jam. I also ordered a half order of their biscuits and gravy. That was better than expected. The biscuit was soft and flaky and the gravy had the most meat in it that I've ever had. Bacon wasn't as crispy as last time but still great. Bacon can't go wrong. Especially deep fried bacon. My son had the chicken tenders and fries. I assumed the fries were meh because he didn't finish them. The chicken tenders were pretty good. Besides a few French fries we all finished all of our food. Service was ok. Had some moments when we were trying to get her attention for a bit but like I said it was a full house in there. Those cute one of a kind bird houses are for sale so make sure to purchase the one you have your eye on. A couple bought two of them while we were there. Only one tv here and best to sit at the counter if that's what you like to do while you eat. Lots of locals eating here and chit chatting. Great food at a relaxed pace.
