I had such a wonderful experience for my first time eating Turkish food and oh boy I've been missing out on this deliciousness. My waitress Eve was absolutely a delight. She made the best suggestions for drinks, appetizers and entree. We had the hummus, spinach pie, baba ganoush for apps and the steak and salmon kabobs with cherry rice for the entree. I've always gone to East Meadow until this location opened right near my home. I have had some good meals here until the other night. It was so salty I needed a garden hose run to the table. We started with appetizer sampler including baba ganoush, spinach pie, and samosas. All the apps were very flavorful. I would recommend them all. For my main course, I had a mixed meat platter with boneless chicken and ground beef kebab. All were perfectly cooked and deliciously seasoned. The atmosphere is casual yet elegant. It's a great ambiance for a date or an intimate evening out with a small group. The restrooms are spacious and clean. I dined in during the first week they were open, and they were still working some things out. Dessert menus were unavailable. The coffee machine was still being calibrated. First, the truly exceptionally prepared and presented, freshly cooked food: our app choice of spanakopita was sinfully good and the delectably grilled to order tenderloin steak kebab, plated without a skewer(with either grilled vegetables or a Greek salad for a modest $2 upcharge, in place of white or brown rice) and cappuccinos to finish the meal were both equally wonderful. I drove all the way home only to see that they made few errors and I had to drive back. The owner handled the situation and the staff was cool about it. The four of us came here at 5 on a Monday. It is a soft opening but they had all the items we wanted to order except for alcohol because they don't have their liquor license, which where I am knocking off the stars .. I am not taking stars off for not being able to serve alcohol just yet, I am knocking them off because when the waiters friends came in ( a couple) they were able to order and be served beer and wine. I understanding "hooking up" your friends , but not when other costumer a that just tried to order alcohol were denied. A hard review to right since I had a big lunch. So I ordered 2 appetizers- I will eat the hot one her and take home the cold. Sambuseh are crispy dumpling filled with chickpea mixture - reminiscent of falafel. These were excellent crispy and flavorful. The babaganoish, most of which goes home, was a huge portion and very smokey- that's a good thing! Had to skip dessert because I'm stuffed. But a return visit is planned VERY soon. read more

Sufiyas is one of the best Persian restaurants on the Island. We went and tried out their new place on merrick rd. It is very nice and cozy it has a very middle eastern look to it. The servers take time to explain each and every single dish knowing some people might not be too familiar with the cuisine which is a nice touch. Their sambuseh, sigara borek and felafels are a must try. We also had their kubideh and lamb kebabs as well. Their desserts are so so, skip the saffron ice cream it leaves an odd taste in your mouth but their teas are OK. The proces are considered cheap when compred to orher places that cook similar foods. Wow! The very best for Persian food with service that is excellent. The appetizers are plentiful to choose from. We had the choose three: falafel, hummus and babaganush, and then also added grape leaves. Just delicious!! The entrees were kabob platters: salmon, chicken and barg (steak). First time at Sufiya"s'Grill tonight and the first time for Persian food ... we are happy we came! They bring you warm grilled pitas with a delicious dipping sauce instead of the usual bread. Yum! We shared Sigara Borek, 4 filo dough rollls filled witb feta and a lovely dipping sauce. They were good but the feta was a bit too salty for us. We then had Barg and Kubideh and boneless chicken kabab and Kubideh. The Barg is grilled beef tenderloin which was tender and perfectly cooked medium rare. I am not sure what Kubideh is ... the meals came with delicious brown basmati rice, a pita, and a grilled onion and tomato. I upgraded my rice choice to cherry rice and was very happy that I did. Yummy! We each took home half of our dinners! We were so full that we had no room for dessert. Next time we won't get an appetizer so we can try the homemade pistachio ice cream. I have been to the sister restaurant of sufiyahs in East Meadow so I knew I was going to gave a nice meal. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed my meal in Merrick even more. We ordered a Greek salad which was definitely big enough for two. I then had had salmon steak with grilled vegetables which were delicious. The salmon steak was a very nice portion & the were cut into very large pieces. They included zucchini eggplant and roasted peppers. I opted to have the vegetables instead of rice. My husband had a mixed grill which he said was excellent. I will definitely be coming back to this restaurant in Merrick. My advice is just to make reservations before you go because it's a small restaurant and you might not get it. read more

Ordered dinner through seamless and it arrived sooner than estimated. I ordered the appetizer combo with falafel, grape leaves and spinach pie. The falafel was crisp and had a lot of flavor. The grape leaves were delicious with the perfect hint of lemon juice. The spinach pie was awesome! Crisp and soft with a nice balance of spinach and cheese. I also had the lamb shish kebab with basmati rice. The lamb could have been seasoned a little more but it was soft and cooked at the perfect temperature. The rice was very good and not bland at all. Have been eating here since it first opened. Food is always good and never really had a bad meal. Ordered from there last night and it was Awful!!!! I had the lam shish kebob and shirazi salad. There were only 5pieces of lamb and they were mostly fat! The shirazi salad was small and tasteless! My daughter had the barg kebob with Greek salad. The steak was so tough it was difficult to cut and the pathetic small Greek salad was wilted lettuce! We also ordered a gyro which was on a wrap (I've Never seen that before)!! After a year of being back I must say the food is still great HOWEVER since a turnover in staff, the service I expected from the very beginning had set in. We went in to wait for a table and sat at the bar for a drink while our table was being set. We waited for nearly 15 minutes before asked if we would Like a drink and there were only two other ppl eating at the bar. The bartender was unfriendly and seemed to be overwhelmed. After 30 minutes we were sat upstairs as per our request. We had been passed several times by servers as we had empty glasses and dirty dishes to be cleared. I changed my review because Unfortunately I will not be back. . I was pleasantly surprised to see this restaurant open local to me. Usually in this specific area it is hard to see a place of such rich culture make it to even open and then actually survive. With that said, unless it's an Italian, Chinese, Kosher or sushi spot the rate of success is nil. HOWEVER, the place really nailed it. With a beautiful modern but true to its culture, the atmosphere at Sufiya's Grill was beautiful. The lighting was perfect. There were two levels which I loved. The full bar also featured Turkish beer wine and liquor which was really nice. the food was phenomenal! Everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection and we tried quite a bit from the menu to get a feel of the presentation. The combination platters are huge portions so if you want to share with 3 ppl you can. There is plenty for all. we ordered it to sample all of the grilled meats and we brought half of it home! the barberry rice wasn't what I expected because usually the traditional rice they use is basmati and it's cooked slightly al dente this was cooked soft but it was still really good. the only thing I found disappointing was the dessert options but I was so full I didn't care to have any. I suggested they offer something called ekmek, a cracked wheat and eggwhite dessert that is offered in Mediterranean restaurants. They wrote it down to see what they could do. The server was eager to please and friendly. This was refreshing since the area is known for snobbish residents leading to not so friendly service almost everywhere. Food is tasty and the staff is very accommodating and pleasant. The only issue I have is when I order take out the food tends to get soggy as they put the entire platter in one box that even with dividers can mess up the crispy bits due to the food being boxed while hot. The simple solution to that would be keeping the juicy/wet products in separate container to the dry pieces. But other than that I must say this is an excellent place to dine in or take out. read more
