I've been here twice with friends and the food has been great! I was skeptical about the chicken salad with pimento but it really does add flavor. The homemade soups vary daily. My favorite is the chicken artichoke. The baked goods get me every time! The marshmallows in the Rice Krispie treats are a bit gooey instead of rock solid like so many other recipes. The buttercream frosting is not overly sweet and the thin cookies pair nicely so it's not too much of a sugar rush. I love supporting local, family restaurants. Let me just tell you how wonderful these people are!! I called from East Texas -looking for a bakery that would deliver treats to The Heart Hospital, Baylor Plano, and Jeremy didn't bat an eye. He was so helpful and was happy to oblige. He really made the process easy, and insured me he would get it taken care of. He called to tell me the delivery was made, and instead of dropping the cupcakes at the front desk of the hospital, he hand delivered them to the nurses station on the correct floor!! Called and ordered a birthday cake. I spoke with Jeremy who was very nice and assured me that this was going to be the best yellow cake I had ever tasted. The cake did look very nice but I was so disappointed, as were the guests. It was one of the WORST cakes I have ever tasted. The cake was dense and without much taste. It looked like it hadn't hardly risen and had areas in it that looked like it had been soaked in something. The chocolate butter crème frosting was pretty good but way too much, especially between layers. I paid $30 for an 8 inch cake. A Duncan Hines yellow cake mix is way better!! I absolutely love Sugar and Spice Bakery. It is a cozy family-run establishment. While they no longer offer their yummy tuna sandwich, it was the best I had ever had. I really enjoy their egg salad sandwich with kettle chips. They make the best homemade soups that I have ever had. We recently ordered a chocolate chip cookie cake which was hands down the BEST cookie cake I have ever had. It was thick and tasted exactly like their chocolate chips cookies. It was not too sweet and was not thin and mushy. It was EXACTLY the same as their individual cookies. Every single person at the party commented on how great the cake was. My birthday occurred about 5 weeks after I was nearly killed on a motorcycle by a REALLY bad SUV driver, and we celebrated the day as my Birthday/Still Alive Day. We showed up 30 minutes before opening, but Jeremy (owner) let us in anyway. While we didn't give them enough notice for a Chocolate Peanut Butter sheet cake (serving 40), after hearing the story of why I was in a wheelchair, at length, the head baker went out of her way to add a thick layer of Peanut Butter to the cake prior to frosting. The cake turned out beautifully and was about the best Choc/PB cake I've ever tasted!! Just be sure to give them about a week's notice for a custom cake, lesson learned. "Chocolate Pecan Pie, Caramel Pecan Pie, Pecan Pie etc." I ordered a slice of chocolate pecan pie to-go. ( Best decision I've ever made in my life.) I think it tastes best with a black cup of coffee. On its own the pie is sweet ( duh), crunchy,chocolatey, and had a slight vanilla twang. With the coffee, it brings out the chocolate in the pie and balances out the sweet. I adore this place and will most definitely be back. Just a shame that they close so early. Be sure to plan ahead if you intend to come. He showed me several pictures of what they could do and shared stories of how his mom makes the cakes. I got the idea that they really put love into their baked treats. I bought a few cupcakes (choc/choc icing, vanilla/strawberry icing, red velvet) to try before I ordered my mom's cake. They were moist and the texture of the icing was just right. I'm not a fan of choc with choc icing cakes, but I really liked theirs. It wasn't too sweet. Another plus is that their prices are very reasonable, IMO. Just like the other reviews, I do wish they had a bigger flavor selections, but Jeremy said they do more than just the basic flavors. They have Italian Cream, Lemon Chiffon, Fresh Strawberry, and Carrot, just to name a few. A very charming place, an older lady came in planning to meet friends there and I can totally picture them having tea/coffee with the finger sandwiches. The cost of the lunch offerings might be a little high but given the area, the atmosphere, and its primarily a bakery..its fine. I think its wise for them to offer something extra that helps pay the rent which in Plano is surely high. I hope that the owners don't mind me sharing this experience but I was just so impressed with the generosity and wonderful customer service we received: My 7 yr old son and I had driven to Ft Worth to Plano looking for Whirlyball for an office/work function for my husband's company...without working AC in our van! It was over 100 degrees yesterday and we were pretty miserable. Anyway, I spotted this bakery (they share the parking lot with Whirlyball) and thought we could cool off with some ice water and a treat (my son had not complained one bit). Apparently they had closed but had neglected to turn off their open sign and lock the door. When one of the owners (the son) saw us, he offered us a treat, free of charge! I would never normally accept such an offer but my son really wanted a cookie (they looked wonderful) so I just didn't have the heart to turn it down. Well, he let my son have 2 cookies! and he offered me a raspberry scone! That was so generous and appreciated. The verdict: cookies--so yummy. The frosting reminded me of something from my childhood and was the perfect texture: not too crunchy/hard and not too soft. scone--let's just say it's a good thing I don't live nearby or I'd have to spend an extra hour in the gym each day to feed my new scone habit. It had a subtle berry flavor and wasn't too sweet (unlike Starbucks) and just tasted homemade. Now, I have to tell you, if the goodies hadn't been good, I just wouldn't have posted a review in appreciation of the generosity. But since they tasted wonderful, I just HAD to post a review. This business is new - just one year old. This is a partnership between mother and son. A pleasant, very nice family business. They use nothing but the finest, freshest ingredients. This is as close to what you would make at home if you had the time and the love of baking. The owner is proud to point out that the cream pies are freshly made - crust and all. The filling is not processed, store bought commercial filling but is instead lovingly made by someone's mother. That counts in my book. The cookies are absolutely scrumptious with the right balance of sweetness with a bit of saltiness. The chips are fresh and flavorful in both the peanut and the chocolate chip cookies. These are made with real creamery butter. The cakes are superb and very pretty. These are simple, non-nonsense baked goods with the emphasis on flavor, simplicity and home made authenticity. This women knows what she's doing and obviously has been doing it for years. The young man who runs the shop, her son, is pleasant, knowledgeable and chats easily. The pies and cakes are average for Plano where things tend to be a bit hi - $15.00 for each pie and cake. The same price or less but not the equality can be had at your local grocer. But they use frozen crusts and hyper-processed ingredients. These folks fashion everything themselves. This place is well worth the price. read more
