They even mentioned their Burnt Almond Cake has always been their bestseller. First bite tasted heavenly. This had more stronger almond and Italian rum flavor and I was pleasantly surprised by the sugared almond slivers coating. The custard was absolutely generous, creamy, and divine. I'd say Peter's Bakery is more traditional, but more fluffier while Sugar Butter Flour has a more modern twist and is slightly sweeter. Their version definitely has more custard, which I personally enjoy... but this may be too sweet for the older Asian parents family. I'd love to come back to try their cookies and other pastries next time. Their Burnt Almond Cake is to die for and would love to buy another one when I'm in the area. I really didn't want to write this review, however when you pay $70 for a cake ordered a week in advance and not only get this as the final product but have the owner lie and gaslight you instead of simply owning up to a mistake, you lose a long time customer. Look at the picture. The dome of the cake was never leveled and no attempt made to level the layers with custard so I'm paying for a cake that I could've made with premade cake mix and 5% custard? We called in and the worker confirmed there are supposed to be two layers of custard in the Burnt Almond and advised me to email the owner so they could make it right. Look at the next photo. How do you as an owner - instead of simply admitting this was a rushed, dry, and unleveled cake - tell me in one message that the recipe changed because other customers had been complaining about too much custard but that you would be returning back to the original recipe? What am I, 5 years old? Just own up and say someone messed up and you'll keep the quality of your products up - but I guess that's hard to do when you ignore your long timecustomers and already got $70 for a cake that's 95% bread. I've been coming here for years, and the burnt almond cake has always been one of my favorites. Unfortunately, my most recent purchase was disappointing. It is embarrassing to tell all your guests this is the best burnt almond cake in the Bay Area and it didn't live up to it when serving the cake. The biggest difference were the amount of custard and the top layer (upside down dome??!!) seem to be just thrown together, as evident in photo. Compared to the cakes I've purchased in the past, there was barely any custard filling this time, making the cake much drier and less enjoyable. One of the things that made this cake so special was the perfect balance between the light sponge, toasted almonds, and generous custard filling. With the prices of the cakes continuing to increase, I also expect the quality and consistency to remain the same. It's disappointing to pay more but receive a product that doesn't meet the standard I've come to expect. I keep hoping the Burnt Almond Cake at SBF will return to its former glory..unfortunately not and the stature of cake has decreased significantly. I've never seen a 1/4" depth, round cake pan. They slice a standard thickness layer of cake and the bits that crumble off are used as layers of the cake. Extra custard is used to attempt to make it level. read more

We have been coming here for about 13 years for all our special occasion desserts. We stopped by yesterday for some little cakes and treats for my birthday. All their cakes are displayed in pastry cases and they have some custom cake replicas on the wall. They offer a variety of cakes that are already made or you can make a custom order. The owner is very sweet and helpful. Our favorites here, that I picked out, are the opera cake, the princess cake, hazelnut nut chocolate cake and burnt almond cake. They are all so good. The strawberries were fresh and I like the custard. The outside of it has bars of white chocolate which was good but too sweet for me. Found this place as we were looking for wedding cakes for my son and his now wife. The wedding cake sampler we had was ok. We all were disappointed as the samples were rather dry.
