I like their cakes but this time the service was way off. I spoke with an older Tina to order the cake and when calling back, I spoke with a younger Tina. Upon arrival, no one could find the cake, then said it wasn't ready and to come back in an hour (3pm). I waited in my car for over an hour because they didn't have it completed-I had originally had it set for pick up on Friday at 1 pm and then 30 mins later, called back and asked if it could be moved to Thursday at 1pm and the younger Tina said it wouldn't be a problem at all. The younger Tina said she didn't take the call but when pressing her, said the other Tina must have done it. Anyway, I hope the cake is good; it's for my husband's 60th. Came here today to pick up my husband a little treat and wasn't disappointed! Unlike a few of the other customer reviews, i had a great experience with the staff. They wished me good morning as soon as i walked in and even were happy to ice a message on the donut when I asked! The icing was honestly a little but sloppy but it tasted AWESOME so who cares! (The maple long john filled with butter cream, if you were wondering. Mmmmm). The donut and many other of their sweets were around 2 dollars so expensive in comparison to other bakeries, but its really not that bad considering you're supporting a great cause and they taste great! I am so disappointed in the smash cake that they made for my sons first birthday. The writing on top?!? Looks like something I could've done. We have bought other cakes from this shop and they turned out great. Not sure what happened here. When I went to buy the cake the woman who I ordered it from said she could not do anything crazy for a smash cake because of staffing restrictions due to COVID. This was 2 weeks before his party. Rude staff. I went to pick up a large order for a friend's wedding. I had never been here before and wasn't sure where to go to pick up an order. I walked in and stood there for a bit trying to figure it out. I saw someone else walk up and get their order so I followed behind. When he was done the lady behind the counter turned back around and ignored me. At this point I had been there for about ten minutes just standing there. So I said "Hi ma'am, I'm here to pick up an order." She turned around to look at me. Then she rudely said "Yeah, and there's a line of people ahead of you." I was a little put off by the rude response, but I tried to not let it get to me. So I said, "oh, ok. But this is where I pick up, right?" Again, the lady said "Yes! Hands down the best bakery I've ever been to! I absolutely love birthday cake anytime of the day, so I was very pleased when I was told about this one. My husband instantly became a fan after he tried a cupcake, icing and all. I love bakery stuff and donuts, but I've been a little disappointed in HR. There have been great donut places (see 'paradise donuts'), but that's about it. I stopped by Sugar Plum after a trip to Trader Joe's after my girlfriend got me some donuts once that I loved. This place is just great all around! The employees were incredibly friendly and happy and they were well-stocked (even a couple hours before closing). They have everything from cakes, to donuts, to cookies. Not only did everything I get taste perfect, but the prices were incredibly cheap and it's a non-profit establishment! I think if more people knew about Sugar Plum there would be a line out the door. Things I loved: Mini cherry cake, black and white cookie, and coconut donut. They also have seating inside if you can't wait to eat your sugar-filled food until you get home! Overall: Really great bakery in an un-expecting area of town. The price was right, service was great, and options were plentiful. She was too busy writing stuff down to say hi. The other employee going over prices for cookies with a customer didn't find it necessary to acknowledge me either. I purchased a small (six inch) birthday cake, and other random sweet treats here on a Friday late-afternoon. Even though I had visited late in the day on the beginning of a weekend, there were a lot of cakes with varying designs to choose from, ranging in size from 6 inch to 1/2 sheet. I was originally looking for a fishing/hunting theme, but when I saw the crab/beach theme, I knew it was the one to get! It had an air-sprayed beach/sand theme, along w/ a beautiful frosted crab dangling over the edge. The sugar crystals sparkled like sand and the (fake) palm trees fit in well. I asked them to put a name on the cake and I was impressed. No shaky hands there! Who can leave a bakery with just a cake?! I sampled some treats from the next counter, and all were baked perfectly & tasted like they were just put out! It was hard to drive home knowing I had single-serve pastries within arms reach!! They also have a lunch deli-type counter serving sandwiches, etc.... but it was closed when I visited. I thought the bakery prices were typical for this area - not overly pricy, and not cheap-like-a-grocery-store. If you want cakes/pastries very FRESH, this is the place to go. I would definitely recommend this bakery to others in Va Beach. Very clean, staff was courteous, I was greeted when I walked through the door, and the extra writing I requested on my cake was very well executed. The only thing that bothered me was trying to negotiate traffic while trying to find the bldg. off Laskin Rd. It's located on the parallel 2-lane road next to Laskin. All of these beautiful baked goods are made not by high-society bakers but by disabled or disadvantaged young adults in the area that Sugar Plum purposely employs to teach them a useful skill. To say I love cupcakes and all things bakery related would be an understatement. While vacationing in Virginia Beach I had the most horrible craving for a cupcake. After HOURS of looking up local places I stumbled upon Sugar Plum. I tried both cupcakes and cake pops. The cake pops were very soft and delicious and the cupcakes were AMAZING. I even bought some to bring home, and two days later they were still soft and fresh! Most of the time, cupcakes last maybe a day before they get hard and dried out. But these cupcakes lasted! They have other bakery items, too, but I didn't try anything else. I'm sure they are all delicious. If you are craving something sweet, head down to Sugar Plum Bakery and pick something up! You will not be disappointed. Also, as a side-note: this bakery employees individuals with disabilities so before you judge someone on their outward appearance remember that some disabilities are invisible. Have ordered many specialty cakes here over the years, for bridal showers, baby showers, bdays, even my wedding cake! If you can come in here to order or pick up a cake and not order anything additional from their counter, you win the self-control of the year award, because everything looks so fantastic and smells so delicious, i do not know how to resist!! The staff is absolutely awesome. The only complaint I have is that there seems to be major usage of that butter cream icing on almost all the cakes and a lot of the individual baked goods, and I am not a fan of the butter cream...even the red velvet cake icing tasted like it was leaning more towards butter cream than cream cheese. They do have a limited lunch menu, only had the chicken salad, but it was quite satisfying. I cannot stress how much I appreciate Sugar Plum's history for helping the developmentally disabled. But, I have to review objectively based on their baked goods. The desserts here are pretty standard, and there is actually a particular one that I would stay away from completely. The Mozart cupcake was good, and I think this was my favorite item for the simple fact that it was the only one that was sorta different. It's a white vanilla cake filled (more like "topped" because the top of the cupcake had a little hole) with raspberry jam and Bavarian cream. Had this actually been "filled," I would have liked it more. The Peanut Butter Bumpy cupcake was also good with a nice balance of chocolate and peanut butter... who doesn't like that? The mini cupcakes (chocolate, red velvet and vanilla) were typical, did not stand out, and tasted like supermarket cupcakes. Which are good too, don't get me wrong. The biggest disappointment was the cannolis...from the cream to the pastry shell. Maybe I had a stale one, but mine was hard to eat since the shell was gummy and the cream was cream cheesey! I was not expecting that from a cannoli and quite frankly did not like it one bit! I would like to come back to try the elephant ears and just to continue to support what they do... but stay away from those cannolis! read more

I really really want to like this place....I am giving them one more star than maybe they deserve because they have such a great staff and story. I came to have lunch and grab a pastry. I ordered the chicken salad sammie combo which comes with a drink and chips....oh and two cookies. I also ordered a red velvet cupcake. I am a cupcake person...and I am picky. I have a high standard. I always sample a red velvet every time I try a new cupcakery to get a feel for their baking style. Red Velvet has to be moist with a cocoa flavor. It should never be bright red....all that dye....yuck! And the cream cheese frosting should be tangy and not fluffy and light like a meringue or buttercream but rich and creamy. Red Velvet fail. Although it was moist....I honestly think the cake tastes more like butter cake than chocolate, let alone a red velvet which should be a Devil's Food if done correctly. The frosting was awful. I'm surprised it wasn't broken. I couldn't tell if there was cream cheese or not because it was SWWEEEEEEEEET.....tooth aching sweet. And almost....greasy. Do they use crisco? Maybe there was a hint of the cream cheese tang but it was lost behind the sugar rush. Maybe this was just a bad batch? Their cakes looked fantastic as did their other pastries so I won't write them off yet. Their lunch was a little pathetic. They have some great ideas but I think they need help executing them. Chicken salad for instance....it was good. I could have made it at home though. Nothing special. The bread on the other hand....OMG sweet baby Jesus! It was delicious and fresh raisin bread. Unfortunately, it wasn't toasted so it combined with the mushy chicken salad into a mess that stuck to the roof of my mouth and was hard to swallow. yucky! How amazing would that cinnamon raisin bread be with a curry chicken salad? They have the base down....maybe just add some walnuts and curry powder and lightly toast the bread! Or add dill and go a different route. As for the rest of the meal....I only had two options for chips....plain or bbq. That is kinda sad....let's get more options people! And hey....when you hand the customer a drink cup....maybe have some lids? I only found coffee lids on display so I gave up. Restock time!
