We stopped in for brunch on Saturday morning. The brunch menu only had 5 breakfast items so I decided to order the starter sugar bacon (in which the restaurant was named after) as my entree. My husband ordered the proper brunch and my daughter the French toast. We also ordered the specialty cocktail - Lemony Snicket. The cocktail was absolutely delish - unlike any other lemon cocktail I've tried before. It had lemon-flavored creme on top and was a home run!! I was a little disappointed in the sugar bacon though. I guess I was anticipating a thick slab of bacon baked in Brown sugar. Unfortunately it was more like small slices of pulled pork which just wasn't what I was anticipating. My hubby ended up trading me the bacon off of his proper brunch but it wasn't really what most Americans refer to as bacon either. My daughter loved her French toast and it was a generous helping. Service was fantastic and overall I would recommend trying this restaurant out but just be mindful that the sugar bacon is non-traditional. read more

Apparently the (inaccurate) threat of bad weather caused SB to be almost empty this eve. The meal we enjoyed was top notch. We started with a dozen each of the oysters, a Thursday eve $ special that should not be missed. After that, Kim loved the duck breast, and my grilled pork chop was excellent. House Tater Tots (with puled pork, pimento cheese, bbq aioli) - phenomenal! This is a cross between mashed potato cakes and tater tots. Great flavor and sooooo scrumptious. Charred Brussel Sprouts (with sweet soy, bacon, sesame) - perhaps the best brussels sprouts I've ever had. Big bacon cubes. Grilled Asparagus (with lump crab, chipotle hollandaise) - light and perfectly grilled. Melt in my mouth great! Bbq Prime Brisket-Cheddar Enchiladas - absolutely perfect! The black beans were full of flavor. Perfect balance and not too spicy. Spinach Artichoke dip - creamy and tangy with a wonderful grilled sourdough straight from the grill. Butterscotch rum Banana Pudding - will put grandma's recipe to shame!!! The ambience is warm and inviting. Make a reservation to avoid long waits on busy nights. We could easily be at a bistro in the mountains for all the wonderful attention to detail and excellence. Yay McKinney for hosting this terrific spot. We will be back. Y'all. (Am I southern now?) This place is FANTASTIC. Every. Single. Thing. I'm in town for work and my only regret is that I didn't come here EVERY day. I ordered a smoked old fashioned. The most amazing thing was that the essence of the orange hit me with every drink I took. It was so pleasant. I had an app of the namesake sugar bacon and I never knew I needed to grill watermelon, turns out I do! The meat of the pork belly was *perfect* and had such good flavor. Brussels sprouts shouldn't taste so good, but I ordered them here and I may never be able to eat any others ever again. I ordered the short rib and an additional side of fries (I know, obnoxious. No regerts) This thing was HUGE and sooooo flavorful. Overall, I cannot express enough the food quality and taste. On a side note, they are being super safe, as safe as you can be when you're still in public during COVID. The staff is incredibly friendly, helpful and so so nice. I LOVE the new addition to the Mckinney Square! You walk into a very trendy, chic decorated atmosphere that feels very warm and inviting. It has a great open concept. It is not very large maybe 20 tables, but there is a room off to the side that looks like it is for banquet and private parties. The patio is also a great feature to the restaurant. There is only one other eatery on the square that has a patio that is as large as this one. The drink menu is fun and offers many different concoctions with a wide variety of spirits. I first started with a Raspberry Time and then the Watermelon Crush. What I liked about both cocktails is that they were fruity but not too sweet. When you are drinking a beverage you want to taste the flavors but not be overpowered by alcohol or sugar. I think it was a great balance of flavors that to not prevail over one another. As an appetizer we had the Blue Crab Cakes. There were 4 small crab cakes that did not have any fillers. it was just lump crab seasoned perfectly. So I saw a comment on Yelp that the portions are small. Yes, the appetizer was on the small side, but the ingredients were phenomenal. The hubby and I both had fish sandwiches. He had the Salmon BLT with fries and I had the Grilled Swordfish. I substituted the fries for the Wedge Salad. Both of our fish pieces were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection The wedge salad had the most amazing gorgonzola dressing. It was the best I have ever had the pleasure of putting in my mouth. Now, as for these two dishes they were Texas sized and we had no room for dessert. Our server Jared was so friendly and attentive. He was very knowledgeable about the menu. Best place to eat in downtown McKinney. My husband and I came in for date night on Saturday and it did not disappoint. We started with an order of the Sugarbacon and spaghetti squash hush puppies - WOW to both. Savory and combos that we never would have thought of ourselves. My husband had the short rib and the portion was so big he couldn't finish it (which is saying a lot, he's a big guy, ha). He complimented the collard greens that were cooked just the right temperature. I had the sea scallops which were PERFECTION. They came with a creamed corn that was to die for. Also had to go for a side of mac n cheese....and it did not disappoint. Our server, Bella, was very friendly and attentive. The staff was accommodating and it was a really pleasant night out. Friendly service. Live music on Thursdays until 9 pm. Was recommended the Sugarbacon burger, shrimp and grits, and enchiladas. I was able to try the burger and the enchiladas. The enchiladas tasted uninspired despite having spicy mole sauce and sweetened barbecued brisket. It was accompanied with rice and refried black beans, and they were okay too. The burger was the best thing of the two dishes sampled, with the accompanying fries being flavorful and perfect despite having no additional garnish. Seems like the simpler the dish here, the better. And considering the mixed reviews on Yelp about the other popular dish, the shrimp and grits, it may be smart to stick to the sandwich options where the burger was listed. read more

We had a 6pm reservation on a Monday. We were seated immediately and the service was nice. This review is mainly for the kitchen. We were served old dry deviled eggs that were inedible. The manager brought us new eggs, and we greatly appreciated that. The shrimp cocktail was a let down, huge U-10 prawns, but over cooked and hard. The Caesar salad had wilted brown lettuce, which is disappointing for the price point of this restaurant you would think they would shave Parmesan themselves, and not use the shaved Parmesan you get from US Foods or some other vendor. We ordered the filet and the scallops. The filet temp was well done on half of it, and med rare on the other half. I don't know how that even happens.. unless half of your grill is turned off. The red bliss potatoes were dry and old. There was a crust from where they were sitting in a chaffing dish or double boiler. At $42.00 this dish missed the mark entirely! Very disappointing. The scallops were delicious. The creamed corn flavorful, but for $30 this dish only gave the guest 4 scallops, and 2 shaved asparagus stalks? That's an insane markup. This restaurants vision of what they want to be is confusing. I'm guessing the brunch scene is where it's at. The items looked priced better and maybe the perceived value is better. We ended up needing to go somewhere else for more food, since the portions were small. $140.00 + tip... And you still have to swing by McDonald's for a double cheeseburger. Also, if guests are paying $42 for a steak, maybe you should have actual salt and pepper shakers. Not the McCormick grinders you find at Kroger. This is why this establishment is so strange.. are you upscale pr are you an over priced eatery? You have aged meat but your servers are in sweatshirts? Im confused. We left disappointed. WOW! Talk about customer service. I was greeted personally by the manager, Ruben. Such a nice guy that cares about his customers. I sat at the bar and enjoyed the NFL network that was showing. The bartender couldn't find the wine I was asking for so she worked diligently to find something else I would enjoy. I loved the alternative she found! The manager came by once again to see if I was enjoying, how kind! He also saw I was having the soup, and insisted I try the other soup they were serving. It's were SO amazing! So my partner and I saw the name during a quick search of top restaurants in the McKinney area on yelp...we saw Sugarbacon and decided what a great and fancy name to go visit, and by golly so was the experience! He was so so right with the way in which he described the things we tried during our stay. We first took advantage of the appetizers which were 1/2 price at happy hour - Weekdays 4-7pm! It tasted great - grilled watermelon and bacon and avacado toast!!! The combinations of bacon and warm watermelon was AMAZING!!! But here this: You better try that prime burger. PERIOD. It was like making love to the person you've always dreamed of...the moment it touched my mouth it melted in my mouth. I wanted to order another burger since I split the one I had with my partner but I didn't wanna seem to avaricious on my date night...but man!!!!!I could've ate like 3 of those bad boys with those tasty truffle fries! We also tried the chicken sandwich which was good if your a chicken sandwich type of person...the drinks were good too ... very fresh looking and tasting! We were SO stoked that Sugarbacon had recently reopened, it was our "go to" resto when family and friends came thru town (yes, ahead of Hutchins, Harvest or any other place near the square). Saturday night we took my sister-in-law and were excited to once again expose someone to this great place to eat. 1) Let me preface this review with...we are in a COVID-19 era of dining so nothing can be "as it once was"...this must be why the meals on the menu were paired down so severely. Our hostess was GREAT! I am not being sarcastic here, very attentive she checked on us constantly and we appreciated it, however toward the end of the meal she was bordering on rushing us which is not uncommon in the states, but with so many tables open, we could have been left alone a little to marinate in the good ambiance which Sugarbacon is known for and still has. First, the drinks...the water was not cold, my personal preference is at least room temp, or ice would have been nice in this case. They seemed have reworked all the great cocktails for some reason, I was use to an Old Fashioned with an ice ball, great whisky and an orange peel when I order an old fashioned. The reworked version was 1/2 shot of whisky on the rocks with a cold slab of pork belly and BBQ sauce dribbled on the glass...not a fan, really miss the orange twist and brown sugar. My wife had her trusty Bee-Sting, now served in a regular glass...for me presentation is everything, but my wife didn't seem to mind. My sisters drink was the best ever...it must be a new drink because I don't see it on their online menu but I believe it was called The Farmers Daughter or something like that. All in all, it's difficult to mess up cocktails so I will say they were good. Appetizer- you must get the Sugarbacon Appetizer ....very similar to the old one but now it was paired with watermelon! I really loved that change to the menu. (I could be wrong but didn't it use to have 4 pieces of pork belly not 3?) Anyways on to the meal: I tried the Short rib w/ truffle fries which is in the photo (for a $2 up-charge I got the truffle fries...but what's $2 when your spending $26 for a rib, right?), unfortunately it had no mushroom sauce or braised collard greens, the truffle fries tasted like they had been made from frozen. Then when I bit into the rib I sadly got the largest slab of fat which made it no longer appetizing to me, so I switched with my wife for her Mushroom Bolognese, I understand what Bolognese is, I just have never seen it in such large chunks on fettuccine before, it tasted pretty good though so I continued on fairly unimpressed. My sisters 2 street tacos were so good she only ate one, but she did say it tasted good. Lastly the desert, the Butterscotch Banana Pudding was delicious and shared by all. You won't get the presentation from the server because apparently they can deliver all of the dinks, the food and the silverware but they can't dump the desert out on the plate for you due to COVID-19 (according to the young man who brought it to our table). All in all... it was just a little better than alright for me, I give it a weak 4 stars (likely due to the COVID-19 era coupled with a new team). I say go and try it at least once. I have been there many, MANY times previously , and I am hoping they will be able to step up to 5 stars in the future, but for me when I spend $180+ I want to be WOW-ed and that didn't happen this time, sorry. I will be back again, based mainly on the fact that this was such a loved dining spot. If anyone reads this from Sugarbacon please don't take this defensively, I have been fair enough to present what was great with what can be improved. read more

Overall fantastic experience. Jaime, our server was a master of silent service. That dude was a pre-bussing, water-refilling, observant, attentive server. He offered suggestions and descriptions when asked. We ALL loved our entrees. The 8oz filet was cooked to perfection and salt and peppered just right. The sides were equally amazing! Sauteed Mushrooms/smoked veggies/truffle fries. The cheeseburger was delicious with of course, bacon. The Mac and cheese was great, according to my daughter. Unfortunately, the place was a ghost town. Monday night just does not seem like a busy night on the square. Being one of the only restaurants open on Monday nights, I wish they did more business. I will say that when we were seated, there was a STRONG smell of B.O. it really was not ignorable. We asked to be moved, which the hostess was totally fine with. We were given a cocktail menu and i chose what looked to be refreshing but it was basically a lemonade -I was searching for something a little bit stronger. The bartender was friendly enough to make a suggestion, old fashion, which was pretty stellar in comparison to what I had thus far in McKinney. Then!! He mentioned a whiskey that had been infused for several days! WOW! I don't know what that drink was called, but my heart melted at the first sip. Four of us went here for the first time this Saturday. The building and atmosphere is 5 stars. The decor is really well done and felt relaxing. The high ceilings really absorb the sound so the place wasn't loud. Now for the food. The apps that we had were great (Sugar bacon, hummus, tatie tots). Would recommend all of them. We then had the following entries: - scallops - excellent. Would recommend though I never feel you get enough scallops for a meal - pork chop with hominy - excellent. Would absolutely recommend this dish. Definitely the favorite of the group. - daily special of sword fish - meh. Potatoes were cold and the fish was raw in the middle. I didn't mind the raw but it made someone at the table gag when looking at it. Never had raw swordfish befor - pasta special - pasta with blue cheese and flat iron steak. Least favorite of the group. Odd flavor. Over cooked pasta. Dessert was really a disappointment with the exception of the brownie. Also had the apple crisp and butterscotch banana thing. Would recommend either of those. Our server was over the top (I'm sad I didn't catch her name)! She was super helpful with the menu and very kind. The manager was exceptional as well....helping my cousin with the beer and wine selections. He was great! Our dinners were wonderful, although I was seriously startled when these 2 gentlemen delivered our food......damn near threw down our plates and walked away. Just like that! Didn't present the food, didn't ask if we needed anything. We were left with a huge strip steak and pork chop with no knives. It left me feeling flat. I wouldn't recommend the peach crisp, as there was nothing crisp about it. The peaches were a nice consistency, but the "crisp" was comparable to a bisquick type doughy dough slopped on top. After seeing this place in downtown McKinney for a long time, I finally checked it out along with a dear friend on a Tuesday night. It was a light crowd, but we saw a lot of nice looking dishes coming from the kitchen, so we were anticipating a good experience. Looking at the cocktail menu, I selected the Mezcal Mule, a nice twist on the original that brought more bite and spice, making for a great drink. My dining partner chose the Twenty Rows cabernet, which had great body and aroma, with nice tannins and a moderately dry finish. We were off to a good start! For the dining, we decided to do appetizers, and split an entree and a side. Here's what we had delivered to our (thankfully) large table: House made hams board - Featuring a trio of hams, whole grain mustard, several pickled vegetables, and a jam (possibly pomegranate?), it was a nice starter. The accompanying cheddar biscuits were more like scones in their texture, so if you're expecting soft and moist, beware. They did have a nice flavor, and stood up well to being slathered with meat, mustard, and pickles. Sugarbacon - This signature dish netted us four "cubes" of sweet pork belly on slightly larger toast squares. From a texture standpoint, the dish was a knockout. Crisp exterior, perfectly rendered fat, tender yet not overdone meat, all made for a wonderful bite, but for one thing: The accompanying sauce, which was also delicious, had been laid on a little too thick and overpowered the delicate flavor of the pork (in my opinion; my dining partner did not agree, she thought it was great as it was). I definitely want to try this again, I'll ask if it can be dialed back. House made tater tots - The low point of a meal that, thankfully, had few lows. These were pretty average, not extremely flavorful nor crispy, and just didn't impress, even with ketchup (that had to be requested). The pulled pork and pimento cheese that came with them were good, though, and were gobbled up post haste. Pork spare ribs - This entree was delivered already split into separate plates (a nice touch), and it was definitely more than enough to feed two people. The ribs were fantastic in every way, well cooked but not overdone (they were NOT "falling off of the bone", a sure sign of being overdone), and the bourbon glaze was spectacular, The potato and root vegetable medley that came on the side was delicious as well, though most of it ended up in the to go container for later enjoyment. Finally, for our side dish, we selected the roasted cauliflower with salsa verde. Roasted to a nice dark brown, this dish definitely impressed. The salsa verde was more the consistency of a pesto (and kind of looked the part), and it lent a nice flavor contrast to the brown bits on the florets. The meal was a hit, and we'd love to come back for more. I'm really hoping for a lighter sauce coverage on that pork belly next time, though. read more

I was celebrating getting a new career - staff was fun and amazing and the food was absolutely awesome to the point we were like "we're bringing friends from out of town here" - well we just went tonight and the food was mediocre. Pork chop, no tast. Mac and cheese, no taste, steak - that person ordered medium well so it was already ruined before it came out - but it was very basic. I ordered the rib eye tacos. These tasted like they were sitting in grease with a mound of jalapenos on them and then....feta? I know it says feta on the menu and I was willing to try it but taste match is really not there. Fried tomatoes were fried in oil that tasted old, deviled eggs were alright. Cornbread was what everyone ate to not be hungry. Took 30 minutes to get drinks and even longer to get any food. Food doesn't look like the pictures. We were told that the original chef left? Not sure if that is true but it was just a total disappointment bringing the in-laws to a place we were excited about. I fought really hard to no give the place 3 stars, but my wife and were not impressed. Given that it was a date night on a beautiful Saturday evening just left a less than fulfilling feeling in us. The wait was over an hour, estimated at 35-40 minutes by the hostess. There was live music that was ok, when they stopped playing a man at the bar remarked it sounded better in here. We were seated on the patio, and it was a while before the server came by. I'm going to assume they were a little short staffed on the night. The server was very pleasant and took her time walking is through the menu and drinks. We ordered the sugar bacon, and scallops and the butchers cut. The sugar bacon was good, I was hoping it would be more crisp/crunchy. Then the main course came and after one bite we both regretted our choice. Both meats were over cooked and the highlight was the poblano creamed corn, and the mashed potatoes. I'm sure this may have been a series of unfortunate events that formed the perfect storm, and I hope that the other paying good money got their money's worth. read more

I've been coming here a few times a year since they opened, and dinner here last Sunday night was the best yet. Definitely get the sugar bacon, it's the version yet! The charcuterie platter is amazing, and the house made lavash is soooo good! The cocktails were original and very enjoyable. Our server Hope was so sweet and nice, and provided excellent table service. Will definitely be requesting her section next time I'm there! read more
