My friend and I arrived for a late lunch to an almost empty dining room. Two booths were occupied, and the host tried to squeeze us in the middle booth while the rest of the place was empty. We asked to be seated where we have more room and waited for a slow server. The lunch menu is sparse, so I decided to try the short rib sandwich. The meat was not tender, but what annoyed me was that the sandwich was not evenly made. I cut my sandwich in half. The first half had all the meat while the other half did not. Does not seem like a proper sandwich. The salmon in my friend's salmon salad was shredded like canned tuna rather than a piece of salmon. Seemed a little odd. Overall meh. read more

We had our wedding reception dinner here on Thursday night for about 30 people in their private room. The event manager, Leanna, was extremely helpful setting up the event and was super patient with all my questions. Ben was most helpful setting up a bar package for our guests. The servers for the evening, Lynzee & Paige, were top-notch and took amazing care of our group. I honestly can't say enough good things about these two! They are absolute rock stars!!! Ben was the manager that evening and checked with us to make sure everything was going well. The food...was amazing as always!!! Our guests raved and raved about how delicious and perfect everything was. I have always loved Sugarbacon and everyone there made sure our wedding reception dinner was perfect! Maybe it was an off night but this how things went.. We were seated and brought warm temperature water, no ice in glasses. We were not given any silverware until we flagged someone down after our food had been sitting in front of us for a while, and when asked for some got two sets and one napkin. We never got our drinks we ordered. Our food came out before the appetizer, and we only saw our server twice, when she took our order and when she brought the check. Had reservations via open table for tonight (Saturday) but not very crowded at all. Nice atmosphere. Ordered the charcuterie to start. It was missing hard cheese in our opinion and the server said it was normally a part of it. We attempted to order $125 bottle of Stags Leap Cabernet but they were out. Tried ordering $96 Prisoner: out. Ordered a dry aged rib eye Oscar style medium rare that my son was sharing with his gf and a regular rib eye medium. The steaks came out with the regular rib eye split in two totally rare on two plates... ‍ The dry aged rib eye which was shown to our on before cooked was medium with only a hot pink center (medium to well done The waiter was nice and offered to take the two (one rib eye split) rare steaks back and fix it.... He returned with them pushed together. Still rare. ‍ He went and got the manager (we didn't ask for this) - who offered us a free dessert. We said we weren't interested but our 17 year old at home would probably eat it. I had ordered the rib eye tacos and the meat was well done and chewy. I ate one of the three, The only thing worth the money paid in my humble opinion was the side of Mac n cheese. The truffle fries are good too but only if you really like truffle oil. No moderation of flavor there & just okay in my opinion. I might even enjoy smash burgers truffle fries more than these. So for higher end dinning.... I would skip. Sugarbacon is/was my absolute favorite McKinney restaurant, yes even over Local Yocal. I chose this restaurant as a place to celebrate my 40th birthday with my family of 4. I was eager to get my favorite dish - shrimp and grits. I was unaware of new owners or the "new" menu items. Imagine my disappointment when my shrimp and grits came out and it was completely different than what I was hoping for. 4 medium shrimp and about a cup of grits, in a huge bowl with some salad greens on top and a few green peppers. The taste was fine, not the flavor-rich shrimp and grits that were so good in the past. For $17, I had hoped for more. I checked with our waiter, and he confirmed new owner, new menu. I wish they'd bring back the original. I'm not sure I'll make the drive back to McKinney for the dish I got today. Service was ok, not bad, but they only had 2 waiters and the place was pretty packed for a Monday evening and the waiter said the kitchen was backed up so we waited for more than an hour for 4 dishes, one being a kids meal. My husband's and son's steak tasted excellent, we had to ask twice for the sauce they're served with, the waiter raved about the sauces, which is why we went ahead and asked for them. Overall, if we lived in McKinney we might go back, but not sure if we'll make the drive back for it again. read more

We ordered the mimosa flight, sugar bacon & tots for starters. Both appetizers were dry, overcooked and lacking flavor. Still we ordered two Ceasars salads for our meal. Easy right? No. They took a ridiculous amount of time to prepare. The waitress said they had to make more dressing. Ok fine. A lot more time passes & someone else comes to the table to apologize & offers to bring the salads with different dressings which we agree to. Still, nada. Finally our salads come 45 minites later with dry chicken and Ceasars dressing which was just OK & not worth the wait. Our first and last time visiting. This is a very interesting place, for bacon lovers. The decor is industrial rustic. There is a patio with booths and tables to sit and people watch those walking on the street. What a let down, this place has so much possibility I only have to assume they are limited to leadership and a lack of vision. Let's start with the charcuterie board, no info whatsoever, it was just a plater with meat and cheese, no presentation, no explanation (honestly, my wife made one for me on my birthday on slate with chalk noting what meat and cheese was on the board) Truffle fries, fell flat, no seasoning, not very flavorful, I came home and made some and my family was like "these are so much better" not saying that because I'm a great cook, I'm saying that because this was lazy on their part, throwing truffle oil on something and charging more is lazy and unimaginative. Surprised this place doesn't have a 5 star review. I thought it was amazing. Went for dinner and started with the 'sugar bacon' starter which is pictured. Then for dinner shared the Pork spare ribs and Brisket enchiladas...both were great and very flavorful. The waiter was helpful and extremely nice offering samples of beer and wine. There is a local brewery called TUPPS which i haven't been to yet but they had that along with other local beers that are a must try. Great atmosphere, service and especially...food! Located in downtown McKinney so nice area to walk around, shop and digest. read more

I had high expectations for this place prior to our visit, but this place is a real disappointment. It has a nice "cool" look to it and nice patio - but that is about all that is nice about it. Not sure why this place seems so popular. Nothing special about it at all. The service was okay, typical Texas hospitality, and the place was very clean. Overall, the food was edible and very expensive for the quality. There are only a few dishes that include bacon. My husband and I, of course we ordered the sugar bacon which were told was a special. The "signature" bacon dish is a total waste of money - big price for a really small and average dish. You would think with a name like this that they would incorporate bacon into allot of interesting dishes - dream on. My husband also had the hamburger and he didn't finish it. We had the namesake appetizer named Sugar bacon. The grilled watermelon went so well alongside the sugar cured pork belly. For dinner we had the Half Chicken with Brussel Sprouts, Greens salad with balsamic, and onion rings. This review is purely food and drink based. The drinks are awesome and the food is equally as good. The service however is HORRIBLE. We didn't have a waiter even come to give us water for 15 minutes. He meandered around and didn't take our order until we had to physically stop him and force him to take it. I hope this is a secluded incident and we're willing to give it another try. Me and my husband happened to go to downtown McKinney on a Saturday because we saw the Christmas lights up and it was so nice. We walked around a bit and decided to head to Sugarbacon. It was about 6:30 on a Saturday so expected to wait if we went to there. As we got there there were only 2 couples outside and a ton of seats open inside. We walked in and asked for a table for 2. We were asked if we had a reservation which we didn't because it was a spontaneous trip, and then told we don't do walk ins until 7:15pm. I was confused because there were a lot of open seatings and I couldn't imagine what could change within 45 minutes. Of course we left, but so surprised that a restaurant with at least 10+ open tables would turn down people when packed restaurants don't do that. Won't ever go back here. read more

My family is a collection of avid foodies and we'd really been looking forward to trying this place once things with COVID had settled down. The reviews and menu looked great and we love the area in downtown McKinney. The place doesn't have a ton of parking, but we went for brunch on a Sunday and had no problem finding a spot behind the restaurant. The interior is decorated nicely, and there is an option for dining outdoors as well. The host, as well as waitstaff, were very cheerful and attended to us quickly. Given that the name of the place is Sugarbacon, we had to try the namesake appetizer. A nicely presented alternating series of 3 juicy, grilled chunks of watermelon and house-made pork belly were topped with a sauce and medley of cabbage and greens. While the plate was very visually appealing and the both the melon and "slaw" were delicious, the pork belly was not good. While tasty enough, the meat itself was tough and chewy and the fat was unpleasantly underdone - almost hard. It was not pleasant to eat. I'm not sure if it was an off day, but the pork belly would definitely benefit from additional braising or slow smoking to render more fat and make the meat more tender and unctuous. OK, yes, I have eaten a lot of pork belly, so I know what it should be like :) OK, moving on to our mains. My wife and daughter both had the French Toast. These were well prepared and had ample amounts of whipped cream and orange anglaise. However, there were zero candied walnuts and the bread itself looked like thin, wonder bread type bread. I mean, it was OK, but other than the 2 small metal ramekins of cream this is basically French Toast like you'd make at home, but for $13. The strawberries which came on the plate were fresh and gave the plate nice color. Pro tip: You've got French Toast skills. Get a decent thick cut bread and if you're going to advertise candied walnuts, get them on the plate. You'll have a slam dunk. My son, more of a lunch guy, got the bacon cheeseburger and fries. He enjoyed both, but we both agreed the fries were under-salted. As there was no salt on the table, we tried to flag down a waitress, but the fries were most eaten by the hungry teen by the time she got there. The burger was very good, cooked as ordered and a solid, and tasty choice. No issues with the burger. The biggest disappointment was my "Proper" Brunch. It was very much a mixed bag. The scrambled eggs were tender and buttery; the potatoes cooked well and seasoned nicely if a bit greasy. The grilled tomato, a nice touch, gave the plate some needed color. But the two things I was looking forward to most on this plate were not just bad - they were terrible. The side of bacon was actually small cubes of what I believe is the house-made Sugarbacon. These were either deep fried or rendered so long that they were dry, chewy, practically inedible bits. As an unabashed bacon lover, this was hugely disappointing. How can you screw up bacon so much TWICE in the same meal when your name is Sugarbacon? Then, the biscuit and gravy. The biscuit was house made and incredibly dry. The bottom was overcooked and crisp/chewy. Biscuits should neither be crisp nor chewy. The "gravy", which was about 2 tablespoons of salty, overly thick, cream-style gravy, lay on the top of the biscuit, with not a drop on the bottom half. I am not sure what kind of biscuits and gravy this was trying to be, but I believe serving these might be a criminal offense in Texas. Bottom line, this place has good bones and the menu still reads great. The staff is friendly enough as well, but man the food is so disappointing. I'm not sure if this was just an off day or my fellow Yelp reviewers are just being very generous. One thing is true for sure though - with a new location opening up in Watter's Creek soon, the owners need to seriously step up their game because the Allen restaurant scene is competitive enough that this level of food quality won't cut it. read more

My wife and I have been here on a couple of occasions. On our first trip, we had a pretty bad experience with the restaurant. Some things were not right, and the communication that day was poor. However, I left a review, and the GM was very quick to reach out to me via a message and ask what was going on. Herman asked for me to tell him what happened because it didn't make sense that nobody told him about the mistakes. After couple of days, I was able to call Herman. He was honest with me about some of the circumstances leading up to our negative experience. He explained that nobody had told him we asked to speak with the manager. After we talked for a while, Herman Invited us to come back, and said He didn't want to let the mistake be the end of our experience. He told me that He'd fix anything short of bodily injury or death, every time. So we went back. And let me tell you, that experience was amazing. The service was great, and our food came out amazing. I had their Filet, and my wife opted for a couple of the appetizers. The Filet was cooked perfectly, and the flavor was astonishing. It came with a couple of sauces, chimichurri and mushroom sauce. I loved the combination of those sauces with the steak. The side choices are numerous, but I got Mac and cheese, and the Truffle fries. The fries were amazing, but by the time I got to the Mac, I was pretty full. It had a great flavor, I just couldn't put it down. While I was on the phone with Herman, he had been telling me about their barrel aged old fashioned, and I was really wanting to try that. A good old fashioned stands as my favorite drink. That was an amazing cocktail for sure. The profile of the bourbon was smoothed out, but maintained all of the smokey flavor, and depth. I felt like there was not any way to really improve that drink. It was excellent. Herman also came and sat down with us and talked about the restaurant with us. He told us the story of their shutdown and re-opening. We had a fun opportunity to ask questions and learn from him. He genuinely cared about us and about making everything right from our last experience. I'd definitely go back. To sum up, I believe that for any business, it's not about being perfect all of the time. Instead, the most important part is how you respond when mistakes happen. How do you make it right for the customer, and how do you make sure they leave happy. Discretional income is the name of the game in the restaurant industry. If you make someone feel valued in the face of a mistake, it often will say more to them than if everything goes right the first try. With that said, we felt valued, and we saw them put in a bunch of work to make sure we knew they cared. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
