I've only had really good experiences here. So far, I've only sat in the bar a few times. Each time, the bartenders and staff have been super friendly and knowledgeable. They've been happy to make recommendations, and I've LOVED the recommendations each time! The atmosphere is modern, yet comfortable. The menu is fresh and chef-crafted, but not unapproachable. The drinks are craft, but not so "crafty" that they are undrinkable. Everything about the experience feels welcoming, easy, and comfortable. We came her for brunch on a Saturday and it was easy getting a table for our party of 6. It was pretty full, but they put 2 tables together for us and we were able to sit outside since it was a nice day out. They have both fans and heat laps for those cold nights. Our server was extremely friendly and knew the menu well. We started with the Sugarbacon and it was so good. They were nice and thick pieces that did not have as much fat and chewiness to them as I would have thought, which was a good thing. We saw other people's portions coming out and they were big, so I ended up splitting a roast beef sandwich. It was still plenty of food and tasted great! You could tell the ingredients were top notch. The kid's meals were a good value as well since they came with an ice cream dessert. Due to some miscommunications, we arrived at McKinney for our son's wedding to find no reservations had been made for the reception. We walked into Sugarbacon's 10 minutes before they closed the night before the wedding. Not only was Leanna able to accommodate us (we had a private room), but she did it in style and with an awesome staff and awesome food. We had an open menu and open bar. Everyone, without exception, commented on how nice the meal was and what a great reception and celebration it was. We were able to stay within our budget, though that was certainly less important than the occasion and given the short notice to get everything set up. Thank you Leanna for everything. We came on a bad night. They had 1 bartender that couldn't keep up with drink orders. Our wine came out just before our food. The burger was good very good size. The kids chicken quesadilla was a good portion. The shrimp and grits was not good. It wasn't terrible but the flavor was not creole. I would not order it again. My husband got the steak and mashed potatoes in a bowl and it was good. The portion was small for the price. Our server was a guy with long hair and he kept using his hands to slick it back. Gross. We asked for ranch and didn't get it until he was done eating and we were asking for a to go box. So I'd say the service we got was very poor. The manager should have been helping the bartender. And no management came by to apologize for how long everything was taking. This is a super cute restaurant and we expected more. read more

Stopped in for brunch while shopping in downtown. Seated immediately since there were probably only 8 people in the restaurant other than one large party on the side. We ordered the Pulled Pork Benedict and the Shrimps & Grits along with 2 mimosas. What an absolutely awful meal! The grits had a decent (not great) flavor, but they were room temperature. Seems like the server may have left them in the kitchen window a while. Really, really disappointing. The Pulled Pork Benedict looked good, but the pork was so overly saturated with sauce that it overwhelmed every other flavor. Couldn't really taste the egg or hollandaise at all because the pork was swimming in BBQ sauce. One positive.....the mimosas were really good. Really liked the environment with the big ceiling fan and the sugar bacon neon lights. Saw a couple drinks floating around that looked interesting. Seemed liked a more upscale place with higher prices and I set my expectation a bit higher on the food because of that. Was expecting to be wowed with the food, but overall it was kind of bland to me. Had the chicken sandwich and it was pretty thin and dried out. Not much flavor. Came with fries that were pretty good, but they were fries, nothing special. We had ordered cornbread after waiting about 30 minutes for the food to arrive and it showed up with the entree. This place is pretty good. My husband and I checked it out for dinner on a Wednesday night. It wasnt crowded by any means, and we were seated immediately by a super friendly hostess! They have an outdoor patio that is enclosed during the winter and heated, we opted to sit inside because it was actually a little hot on the patio. The inside is very swanky. There are tables and booths, but it isnt cluttered and is very well laid out. They have a full bar, but limited beer selection. My husband and I order the sugarbacon as an appetizer and two cocktails. The sugarbacon came out very fast and was super tasty! It is pork belly braised with bbq sauce i believe, and man i could have eaten that as an entree with a side or two! Definitely a must try when you go! Hubby got an old fashioned to drink and I had a honey basil collins and it was super yummy, id definitely reccomend trying this cocktail. Okay so everything sounds great so far, why only 3 stars? Well here is the thing. If we had just came in for apps sup some drinks it would have been fine. But we came for dinner. We had already ordered drinks and ate our appetizer (and were slow eaters) before the waitress came back to take our order (this is 35 mins into our meal just about). She takes the our order and it must have been less than 10 minutes when our entrees came out. I ordered the shrimp and grits and my husband ordered mole enchiladas. When I am paying $15+ for an entree i do expect it to be cooked to order, or at least not coming out as quick as a fast food restaurant. My husbands enchiladas though, were very good! It might be one of the best mole sauces I have ever tried! Super rich and flavorful, you could really taste the spices. The rice that came with it was super great as well! My shrimp and grits on the other hand were a huge let down. The shrimp was good, but the grits had an odd sweetness to them. And the flavors of the dish just didnt combine well in my opinion. My best friend took me to Sugarbacon for my birthday dinner. It was a GREAT experience. There were more people on the patio than actually inside the restaurant, which, I suspect added to such a personal experience with the server not running around to care for multiple tables at once. I don't recall his name, but he was WONDERFUL! We ordered appetizers - shrimp cocktail for me and spinach & artichoke dip for her. Both were very delicious. I also like Sugarbacon's style of shrimp cocktail...the flavor was unique. The spinach artichoke dip alone was great, but the toast points were extra YUMMY! For drinks, I don't recall what she had, but I had the Maple Whiskey one. We both enjoyed our drinks so much that we ordered seconds. That said, I didn't really get to finish mine because the portions are a very healthy size...starting with the appetizers. When you go, bring your appetite! For the entrees, I had the chicken with smashed potatoes and she had the salmon. That chicken was very juicy and whatever the sauce/gravy situation they put on the potatoes was also delicious. The only "miss" for me was the jalapeno/bacon mac & cheese. The cheese part was more runny than gooey and it, as well as the actual noodles, lacked flavor. It seemed to me that they were depending on the jalapeno and the bacon as the only sources of flavor in the dish. I didn't make a fuss, but when the server asked about boxing my food, I told him he didn't have to box the mac & cheese because I wasn't a fan, he didn't hesitate to take care of it for us by taking it off the bill. I didn't request that, but I definitely appreciate the level of customer service. The manager came by and asked how everything was, as well. He very pleasant as well. And after all that food and we're both ready to lean over because we were so full, the server came and asked what my choice of birthday dessert would be. The first thing he mentioned was a crumble, but I didn't pay much attention because the second thing he mentioned was chocolate and that's all I needed to here. He also brought a bowl of ice cream for my best friend's 2-year and she LOVES surprises and presents, so the look on her face was priceless. I had a chocolate brownie with ice cream on top and it was sooooooooooooo yummy! Their ice cream is particularly yummy. It looks like vanilla, but it was better than most ice cream that I've had. We both ate from the brownie and still couldn't get close to finishing it because it was so large. The server told me that if I ate the ice cream, he'd box the brownie for me, so I did. It was an incredible experience and truthfully, it's more of a 4.5 than a 4. I'd recommend and go again, especially as a bacon-lover. I want to try a few more things from the menu. read more

This is a great place for brunch or dinner in historic downtown McKinney! As far as the atmosphere its awesome. They have a large patio with booths and also tables and can accommodate large parties. The inside is chic yet modern with a well laid out restaurant. The inside has high ceilings so sound is very under countrol and its not too noisy. As far as the food, we really like it. We started off with the house made tator tots. They are delicious. The BBQ pulled pork, pimento cheese and aioli all work together! HIGHLY recommend. And I had the pulled pork eggs benedict. It was really good. My only wish is I wish I would have split it with my wife. After Bloody Marys, and an appetizer it was a lot of food. We were going somewhere all day where I couldn't take it to go. But it was really good. Lots of flavor and in my opinion cooked just right! If you're in the area or looking for a new spot on the square to try I would recommend this place. While your at it, ask for SammieJo. I was really hoping to be blown away by this dtown Mckinney spot but was unimpressed. We arrived at 11 AM on Sunday (which is when they open according to their website). We started out with the roasted red pepper humus. It comes with grilled sour dough for dipping and was pretty good! The hummus consistency was a bit off and could have used a but more tahini. The waiter was very nice, but he did take away my plate and the hummus before I was done eating. When we ordered, some friends wanted the grilled cheese. After taking our orders, the waiter came back and informed us that they were out of grilled cheese (HOW? It was a few minutes past opening) and my friends quickly picked an alternate off the menu. Ordered the french toast, the pulled pork benedict, and the egg sandwich. The french toast was good but the rest of the dishes were underwhelming. The staff was attentive and friendly (aside from the hummus mishap) and we had no trouble with service. The food is simply not that exciting. I probably won't be back. read more

What a wonderful surprise this new McKinney restaurant turned out to be! The decor is modern industrial-chic with emphasis placed on using strategically lighting to create a subtle but elegant look overall. Jonathan Thompson (protege of Stephen Pyle) is owner and executive chef. Jonathan's dishes have always leaned toward the unusual, pairing diverse ingredients into a palate-pleasing combination of flavors. Starting with the Tuna Tartare which was accompanied by the best avocado relish I have ever tasted (and being from San Antonio, I do know my guacamole). Also on the appetizer plate was a square of blue crab. The artichoke and spinach dip was accompanied by a generous portion of home-made Parmesan toast. Salads are huge, entrée sized, again with unusual combinations such as shrimp Caesar salad. Croutons are home-made and wonderfully crunchy. I was pleasantly surprised at the deep smoky BBQ flavor of the braised ribs. Another winner was the Parmesan gnocchi. Oh my, what depth of flavor! Squeezing in the coffee (served French-press style) and hand made donuts left me more than full. read more

First impression (on the outside) Not great. Beds overgrown with weeds. Looks uninviting and unappealing. The hostess was outside when we arrived. She looked at us but continued to stand there. She eventually came in after sometime and I announced myself as we had a reservation. No smile no nothing- kept us waiting another 15 mins (there were only 5 other tables) and then seated us. Not a warm welcome or anything. We felt like she was doing us a massive favour by hosting us! We were met with a badly cracked and broken water glass that the waiter only noticed when he went to pour water. I ordered ice with my wine. Drinks came and there was no ice so I had to ask again. We ordered starters and were still sitting with closed menus in front of us when the food was put on the table. I had to ask the waiter to please take the menus so we could eat. After starters and waiting 15 mins with empty plates in front of us I had to ask the waiter to remove them. The Sugarbacon was cold, hard and chewy. The green tomatoes were ok. Not great but not bad! We finished our starters and no one cleared. I had to call the waiter over and ask him to clear. Mains arrived and the short rib was lovely. The side of carrots was so hard I couldn't cut through them. Again we were left with empty plates in front of us for 15 mins. The hostess walked passed and I asked if we could get our table cleared. She said "your waiter will do it" and walked away. Does she really think I would have asked her if our waiter was doing it. I asked for the check - no would you like the dessert menu or anything- and still no cleared table. If I was the owner I would seriously look at my staff/service. It could be a cracker restaurant but your staff are making it less than ordinary. read more

I took the BF for a celebratory dinner and it was absolutely amazing. :) Though modern, it feels very homey. You can come casual or dressed up, it doesn't matter. The menu is rather on the smaller side but it definitely has something for everyone. Chicken, beef, seafood, and even pasta. The daily specials are written on the huge black board by the kitchen. We started off with the sugarbacon which is their signature appetizer. It was good but nothing out of this world. Basically bbq sauce covered pork belly with the a pickle on a crostini. I tried the watermelon crush cocktail which was refreshing yet strong. BF ordered the special fish dish of the day which was absolutely delicious! The etouffee sauce tasted really authentic to what I've had in Louisiana. I had the fish sandwich with fries which I really enjoyed. The bread was a bit too buttery though. For dessert we had the plum pie which wasn't too sweet but had some interesting spices in it. Service was great throughout our whole meal. Just wished this place would open on Sunday... For you meal, the pulled pork Benedict was the BEST. Definitely more of a BBQ vibe but delicious! Drink: If you're in the mood for a mimosa, order the champagne and assorted juices. We tried the sugarbacon (pork belly was excellent), blue crab cakes (oh my such a delicious taste), wedge salad (the walnuts & pancetta along with the dressing sealed the deal for the salad) our main entree was Gnocchi. We got the tots which we too salty and I love salt. Then my husband had the SB burger, how disappointing. The bacon was crappy store bacon and the cheese was just cold not melted American cheese. So weird! I had the bbq chicken wrap, it was ok, but had waaaay to much avocado, which normally isn't a bad thing, but it was 90% avocado and 10% chicken, just odd. Very expensive for subpar food. Had an above average lunch at Sugarbacon on a Saturday. We arrived around 11 and the place was pretty empty. There was 1 table seated. By the time we left an hour later it was humming, over 3/4 full. The place is larger than I was expecting, it's a sort of ranch meets industrial setting, and there is plenty of table, booth, or bar seating. We had a booth and were very comfortable for the meal. Our server approached us immediately with a carafe of water for the table. I wish this was some sort of restaurant law that places had to do this. It's great to not have to flag down a server just for some water. To start, we went with the tater tots, served with pulled pork and pimento cheese, and the sugarbacon, because when in Rome. The appetizers came out after about 7 or 8 minutes. The sugarbacon appetizer might seem a bit small for $11. It's 4 cubes of pork belly on a piece of toasted white bread with a pickle (pickled in house) and doused in a rich BBQ sauce. The sauce is much darker than it is in the picture on the website, and I could have used a bit more sweetness. The pork belly is fatty and flavorful. I think you lose that crisp skin by dousing it in the sauce. I'd prefer to have the sauce on the side to get a crispy exterior, But, this is a very strong appetizer, and the quality of the ingredients make $11 a not unreasonable price. The tater tots were fantastic. They're basically mashed potatoes that have been fried, they're not the tiny slivered potatoes like your typical fast food tater tots. Great potato flavor and crispy exterior. The pulled pork is good, but it's standard. The pimento cheese is the real winner, we ordered more for our table. The BBQ aioli was okay, but my favorite bites were the tots with pimento cheese. Napoleon Dynamite would gladly eat these tots. For lunch, I went with one of the new sandwiches, the Nashville hot chicken po' boy. At the recommendation of our server, I went with the housemade potato chips for my side. The chips were very standard: thinly sliced potatoes that were then fried. I detected no seasoning, so I had to give them a liberal dose of salt and pepper at the table. They were good, but I don't know that I would get them again. I would call the Nashville hot chicken po' boy more of a Nashville hot chicken banh mi. It had a lot of the typical banh mi veggies pilled high on the bun in the form of the "collard green slaw." It definitely had the flavor of a banh mi. It's topped with the pickles, which were again good. Given that it was a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, I was expecting WAY more heat. I was disappointed. The sauce was flavorful, but nowhere near hot. The chicken is thighs, which is my favorite piece. The breading with crispy as well. It was a very good piece of chicken overall, but the lack of heat in the sauce was a bummer. The bread eventually fell apart and I had to finish with a knife and fork. I'd say this is probably a 4.25 star review overall. We had an excellent lunch at Sugarbacon and I'd return if I am in McKinney again. read more

Very disappointed. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and was really looking forward to it. We sat down after lunch rush, around 1:30pm and was greeted quickly. We tried their signature dish the sugar bacon which was very good! After we ordered our food that was the last we seen of our server. He never brought more water, we had to ask other servers for water, he was still there just didn't come back to us. After 55min we finally got our food...and it was not good. Our fried were cold asked for fresh ones, they just flash fried them again...everything we ordered grits and shrimp were over cooked, burger was bland, pulled salmon was dry and over cooked. Very mediocre at best. $70 of meh food...was disappointed. We will not be back. Hopefully it was an off day for the kitchen... read more
