The decor here is nice and even better in the bathroom (girls love a bathroom pic lol). The bartender was very attentive and also very helpful. He suggested the shrimp and grits which had a carb ball garnish. The crab balls were actually my favorites the shrimp were good also... The grits... Idk something was missing.

Great atmosphere and people. Loved the chicken and whole wings which came out hot from the kitchen. Great portion of food for the price and the food was of good quality. Will be making this one of my favorite spots. Kudos to our server, Pearlisa who did an excellent job serving us.

I've been hearing great things about this brunch spot, especially for the food and the overall vibe--and it definitely lived up to the hype. I went with a party of 12, and they accommodated us really well. I originally wanted to try the Fried Lobster with Creole Shrimp and Crab N' Grits, but they had unfortunately run out of lobster during my visit. Even so, the alternatives did not disappoint. The strawberry shortcake French toast sticks were a standout, and the flame-roasted apple pie paired with wings, scrambled eggs, and roasted potatoes was just as impressive.Overall, great food, great atmosphere, and I'll definitely be back.

Someone recommended this place to me, and I finally had the chance to check it out with a family member recently. After looking over the menu, I ordered shrimp and grits with scrambled eggs and a croissant on the side, and the family member I went with ordered the fried catfish and grits. Taste wise, the shrimp and grits were okay. Unfortunately, the shrimp was a bit overcooked. The family member I went with enjoyed her fried catfish and grits, said it wasn't dry and didn't taste fishy. Overall, service was friendly, patient and fast. We went on a weekday so there was no wait. We really liked the casual upbeat atmosphere of this place. One thing that was most surprising about this place was that they automatically add an 18% gratuity to your bill regardless of party size. This is the first place I've ever seen do this.

Sugar jam was a jam and I loved every minute of it! By the Grace of God, we didn't have reservations, but were seated within 30m. We stood around and witnessed all the beautiful people roll in from all walks of life. Food is really that thing that will pull it all together. Pair that with some good tunes and a friendly staff, you're bound to spend the entire day there lol. Let's get to the food- Wings for the table- OK! Crispy, not saucy, just light and airy. It tasted slightly sweet with something else I can't place my finger on. French Toast with the grand mariner sauce- yes please and thank you! I did not taste the sauce, but the French toast tasted good. I had some egg whites and the chicken tenders with it. Not a fan of chicken tenders, but there's no substituting, so tenders it is. Mocktail with lemonade and ginger- I don't remember the name but that was quite refreshing. I would've opted for more ginger b/c I like it spicy , and it got the job done. My other homies had shrimp and grits, salmon croquettes. They enjoyed it. Shout out to our waiter Chance . Quite pleasant and had a great aura. He recommended some spots for us to see/explore and didn't rush us. I'd definitely return should I visit AZ again!

I made a reservation to visit this spot for brunch on a Saturday morning. We had great service. I ordered the apple pie french toast, which was tasty. The French toast was very thick. The plate came with chicken (it was just ok) and eggs. I would like to revisit to taste some other items on their menu.

I went into SugarJam The Southern Kitchen with one mission: find elite shrimp and grits. What actually happened was far more dramatic. I accidentally discovered catfish and grits so good they completely hijacked my original plan and made me forget shrimp even existed. First of all, if you order this dish and DON'T add the house hot sauce, you are actively cheating yourself out of happiness. That sauce takes everything from "this is really good" to "I may need a moment alone with this plate." Perfect amount of heat, flavor, and Southern soul. Now let's discuss the bacon situation. The bartender, Bridgette, casually talked me into adding a side of bacon like it was no big deal. What arrived at the table looked less like breakfast meat and more like something excavated from Jurassic Park. That bacon was MASSIVE. Thick, smoky, crispy perfection. I pride myself on never leaving bacon behind under any circumstance... and yet this thing defeated me. Somewhere out there is a remaining slice that still haunts my conscience. Also, shoutout to Bridgette because she made a watermelon hibiscus drink so ridiculously good that I accidentally ordered a second one like I had nowhere to be and no responsibilities in life. Refreshing, smooth, dangerous in the best way. Beyond the food, the entire atmosphere was just a vibe. Great music, great energy, great service -- the kind of place where you immediately feel like you picked the right restaurant before the food even arrives. SugarJam doesn't just serve Southern food... they serve the kind of meal that makes you start planning your return trip before you've even paid the check. When I come back to Scottsdale, they can absolutely expect to see me again.

Love love looooooove this place! Before I got to experience it myself, I heard nothing but good reviews and I am so happy they exceeded my expectations! I had reservations for their Sunday brunch as a prebirthday celebration and let me say this -- I love their customer service!!! We arrived a little late due to traffic, no more than 10 mins, however we were immediately sat and service began! Our server was very friendly and made the experience feel more like I'd known him forever and this was our regular kick it spot! They had a live dj too -- music was amazing and he was a fellow Chicagoan, so that was even more exciting! The vibes were immaculate honestly, packed out too! Now let's get to my favorite part -- the FOOD!!! Omggggggg. It was so delicious! They were pretty busy, so there was a cute wait on the food, but that's because it comes out smoking fresh!!! Also, the wait isn't insane if you're there to enjoy the entire experience -- food, drinks, vibes and music! The head chef does a great job in her kitchen!! I had the Rasta pasta add oxtails and my best friend had the Whole Snapper -- talk about mmm mmm good!!!!! I can't wait to visit again!! I seen so many other things I wanted to try!! 10000/10 experience -- if you're in Phoenix/Scottsdale this place is a must.

Made my way here to support the business. I had no reservation and the place was packed. I opted to wait for an opening at the bar and about 20 to 30 minutes later I was in luck. The service was fast, the people were friendly, and the DJ Yoyito Sound was on point. After getting some recommendations from folks at the bar, I decided to get the Catfish and Southern Grits with a side of scrambled eggs with spinach and peppers. It was solid. I also had a mocktail that was some sweet concoction that was yummy.

It was really busy, which wasn't too surprising bc its Juneteenth. Even tho it was busy, I didn't have to wait long for a table (I didnt have a reservation) and for my food. I got the baked jerk chicken and sweet potato waffle, the chicken was the best chicken I have ever had! The waffle was good too. I kinda expected it to taste like an actual sweet potato but I didnt really taste the potato part, it was sweet tho :) All the workers there were super sweet and helpful. I dont think I've ever been to a place with a live DJ before, that was really cool. TL;DR -- food was good, workers were nice, music was fun!

Amazing experience! We went here in February for my wife's birthday. This was the one place she kept setting on social media and it was a must visit for us. Thankfully we know people that live there that told us to book reservations or we would have been doomed LOL! We pulled up and it was packed, DJ playing good music definitely black vibes in the building. We were served by Dylan, he was patient with our group. It was so many items on the menu which was hard to choose from. Not fan of a la carte items but everything sounded worth it. My wife's meal the French Toast N' Fried Chicken Tenders with the was definitely better than mine. The food, the vibes definitely makes me wanna take a quick flight just to go back here LOL!

Are the grits savory or sweet?

    Savory with cheese

Do they have GF items available?

No, I did not see anything GF on the menu when I went.

When is the DJ there? outside of DJ hours, what is the atmosphere like? Quiet / loud or?

LOUD with a capital L. You cannot hear yourself talking. I believe the DJ is on both Sat and Sun. During the week it's a normal restaurant nice and quiet with good food.

Is this a black owned business?

Indeed it is. Owners name is Dana Dumas. Met her and love this restaurant.

    What's the owners name?

Dana Dumas based on what the website says.

This review is for the totality of the experience…read more I made an advance reservation at Alma Scottsdale for a mid-sized group of 7 to celebrate a special occasion. Our party arrived right on time for our reservation, but we were not seated until 15 min later because our table was not ready. It took about an additional 15 min to get tap water for the table (there was not enough provided anyways), and to place our orders too another ~20 min. The food did not arrive until 30 min later. For context, we eventually learned that the restaurant was short staffed and the bartender was also operating as our waiter. When the food finally arrived, there was a mix-up on what was delivered. We had checked with the staff who delivered one of the dishes: we ordered the "wild mushroom" side, but what we received did not look quite like it. We asked clarifying questions x2, but were assured, "no, it is the wild mushroom." Turned out, it was the mushroom empanada that was delivered to our table, which we originally did not order. The management did rectify the situation upon the conclusion of the event when we were paying the bill, but to us, it felt a bit accusatory as if we intentionally wanted to cause a huge fuss about the final total, which was absolutely not the case. The food in general was delicious. If this was a more standard dining experience, it would have been 4-5 stars just for the food. The service was very subpar, and really colored the entire experience negatively, therefore the two star review. I understand that staffing shortages happen -- fine. My family has worked in food service as wait staff for 25+ YEARS, so I am empathetic. But for management to ring up our bill and then come confront us in an inflammatory manner, making us feel like we were wrong, on an occasion to celebrate something special, was extremely disappointing.

We sat outside in the evening shade for a nice gathering. We shared the Cuban Caesar salad with romaine, manchego cheese, sliced pears, toasted pepitas, masa croutons, avocado, fried plantain chips and Aji amarillo Caesar. The salad was crisp, well dressed and delicious with the fried / curled plantain chips. The shrimp cerviche with fried plantains, blue corn tortilla chips, lime, cilantro and cucumber pico de gallo was ok but not remarkable. Our final selection was the Gaucho spiced skirt steak with chimichurri, and masa potato cakes. The steak was overcooked, not medium rare, bland taste and tough. The potato cake was tasteless. Overall, the ambience and service was good, however, the food lacks any hint of Cuban flare except for the fried plantains. When I think of Cuban food, I salivate for the unique taste profiles with a hint of sweetness from the fruits. At The canal Club, I found it non-existing. The name, setting, and environment is good but the kitchen needs to let in on the theme being Cuban.

The restaurant had already been open for almost 2 hours, so I am not sure why it was so hot inside (others in our party were hot too, so I wasn't just me). Positives are the restaurant's beach decor and the hamburgers. Several people in our party ordered burgers, and they were cooked to perfection and the fries were really good! Negatives are very few seafood menu options and the fish tacos were terrible. They were drowning in a mayonnaise based slaw. The corn tortillas were really fresh and tasty, but when I bit into my taco I could mostly only taste mayonnaise and the pickled onions. Our friends even made an unsolicited comment that my tacos did not look good. Luckily, I selected fries as my side, because they were the best thing on my plate. With a name like Montauk, and the beach decor, I expected more fresh seafood options on the menu. More than half the menu was not seafood (Mediterranean platter, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, brussels sprouts, salads, etc.). Unfortunately, Montauk does not live up to the hype.

During the meal, there were 2 standout dishes that made this memorable. - Hamachi Crudo: THE BEST crudo I have ever had. They switch up the dressing regularly, but whatever they put on mine was unforgettable - 10 oz Wagyu Strip: solid steak, but nothing "Wagyu" tasting. It didn't have that melt-in-your-mouth fatty richness I was hoping for from wagyu and was slightly chewy. - Scallops: tender! - Asparagus: came with a creamy sauce which was a great touch - Chocolate Espresso Mousse Cake: MAGICAL. Layered, with crunchy pralines and vanilla ice cream. If you've had the chocolate hazelnut cake at Carbone, this gave me major similar vibes... that good! Will absolutely be back to try a different cut of steak and also the loaded baked potato. The ambience alone is worth the trip, but the crudo and that cake are what's going to stick with me.
