During my long weekend in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area, our Uber driver recommended this spot. He didn't miss! We love a good Sunday brunch and supporting Black, woman-owned businesses. I was proactive and made reservations from their website. It was same day so we got in for 1:30 PM which was great when you want a lazy morning. Upon arriving, the location is in a shopping plaza but nothing else appears to be open or even in business. There's plenty of free parking in the lot but we took a ride share. There's nearby retailers like Costco but in this complex it looked dead except for Sugar Jam. When you enter, people were waiting to be seated and you can hear the music from outside! This is a lively, DJ friendly atmosphere with lots of activity happening from the bar to the dining room. The hostess checked us in, we walked around and took pictures, admired all the beautiful people dining and it's an open kitchen where you see the orders coming up. Mom and I were seated maybe 10 minutes after our reservation time. We were greeted by Vante - such a nice young man who was patient and helped us decide on what to order. We settled on the margarita flight, the watermelon hibiscus whisky smash, wings & waffles and the French toast and chicken. I also got blessed with a shout out from the DJ and a free shot for my birthday! The food came out quickly (however not together), was plated nicely and the flavors were present. The brown sugar butter and warm syrup on my French toast was a hit. The only complaint I'd note is the heat inside the establishment. I left my fan and desperately needed it. They did eventually bring out some industrial fans to cool the dining area off. The a/c needs to crank harder with all the bodies plus open kitchen. Finally got to come check this spot out meeting up with the girls for a late brunch on Saturday at 230pm. The vibes are spot on as soon as you walk in the door. Love the decor, the space, & the live DJ. We got sat in the back room, and the table we were at was extremely warm. We couldn't feel the AC (no ceiling vents in that back space) & the fan they had in the room wasn't reaching our table. Luckily, our server Vonte was helpful getting us moved to the table along the wall once the previous guests left so we could at least feel the fan. But this was really one of the only negatives of the experience (along with there only being 1 toilet for how many guests can be in the space). I was beyond excited to see vegan options on the menu!! I didn't check ahead of time because I always assume I will just have to get avocado toast or a salad when I go to brunch spots with friends. So when I saw there was a little corner with 2 items for us, I was thrilled. I got the sweet potato veggie hash bowl, and I'm excited to come back to try the pancakes next time. The bowl was the perfect portion and filling. The sweet potatoes were a little harder than I like, but they were still delicious and the whole dish was well seasoned. I ate every last bite it was so damn good. My friends ordered the Salmon Croquettes & grits meal and the flapjacks N' fried chicken tenders. They were both generous filling portions (so much so they both had to take food home), and they both enjoyed what they ordered. My visit to Sugar Jam The Southern Kitchen started less than welcoming. During my recent travel to PHX, I decided to make a brunch reservation. It is important to know that making a reservation requires a $20 deposit for a 90 minute seating. Upon my arrival, the hostess informed that I would be seated closer to or a little after my reservation time. I am new to the desert heat, and the restaurant's AC unit wasn't working properly which made the environment a little uncomfortable. There were fans strategically placed throughout the dining space. We were seated 20 minutes after our reservation time and offered a free round of drinks. There restaurant was out of some food options. The menu is extensive and does have a few vegan options which is appreciated. Our waitress was super friendly, and the DJ's playlist was on point - the restaurant's noise volume is loud. But the food is decent; I enjoyed my sweet potato hash and French toast, and the cinnamon butter and grits were a 10/10. I would recommend the restaurant and visit again, if I ever find myself in PHX. read more

My family and I visited this location on Sunday, July 19, at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate our sister's birthday. We made our reservation online and were seated right away, which made for a great start to our celebration. It took a little while for our waitress to come to our table, but the restaurant was very busy since it was the weekend. Once she arrived, she was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service throughout our visit. One thing we really enjoyed was the live DJ, who kept the atmosphere fun with excellent music. We were seated toward the back of the restaurant, which worked out perfectly for our large party and gave us plenty of space to enjoy our meal together. For drinks, we ordered two Bloody Marys, two beers, a mimosa flight, waters, and lemonades. The only disappointment was the Bloody Marys. For the price, we expected them to be garnished with olives and the traditional toppings that usually come with a Bloody Mary. Our table ordered a variety of dishes, including the Cinnamon Roll Pancakes, Chicken & Waffles, Flapjack Tenders, the French Toast Sandwich (served with breakfast potatoes and syrup), Oxtails with Dirty Rice, and Catfish & Grits. Overall, the food was delicious. The Cinnamon Roll Pancakes were good, although we expected a little more cinnamon roll flavor and icing, similar to what we've experienced at other restaurants. The biggest disappointment was the oxtails. While they were flavorful and well-prepared, the portion size was smaller than expected, especially considering the $43 price tag. A helpful tip for anyone visiting with a large group: the restaurant will only split the check into two separate bills, so it's a good idea to bring cash or plan your payment arrangements in advance. Overall, we had a wonderful experience celebrating our sister's birthday. The lively atmosphere, great music, delicious food, and attentive service made for an enjoyable brunch. I was torn between what I ordered and a couple other dishes I had my eye on. I would want to come back to try the other items JERK CHICKEN AND WAFFLES- The jerk could have been more Jerk-y. I think they played it safe and went mild with the spice and seasoning. Maybe as the first meal of the day they didn't want to knock peoples' socks off with heat. I'm sensitive to spicy but it had no spice whatsoever and I was a little disappointed. It was still a decent bite with the sweet potato which had a good fluffy texture, not too dense and not too soft. APPLE PIE FRENCH TOAST AND CHICKEN FINGERS- Is it an entree'? Is it dessert? The broth/sauce that accompanied the grits was also very flavorful but did not over power the rest of the plate. The shrimp and grits also came with crab balls and eggs. I got my eggs scrambled and it was a very nice addition as I added my eggs to the shrimp and grits. The crabs were also delicious and reminded me of mini crabcakes. The biscuits were great! They are huge so I was only able to eat 1 though it came with 2. I loved it. Now for the ambiance, we came on a Sunday. There was a live DJ and it was overall lit!!! I was truly overstimulated with everything going on. The music was so loud I could not hear my friends. It was nice to see the waiters and staff having a good time dancing and vibing to the music, but sometimes that got in the way of the service as they were forgetting stuff and not being 100% attentive. If I could break down my ratings I would give Sugar Jam a 5 star for the Vibes, Music and ambience! Food would be a 3 star because they did not notify us when something ran out from the menu or ask clarification on my food orders which led to me receiving something I didn't want. I remember Dana's window pane cookies from my Phoenix Public Market days. So when i recently recalled the name of her business and then discovered she opened a restaurant...i was seriously thrilled. My husband was thrilled as well cause the cookies are that daymn good. Went with a girlfriend this weekend and were excited cause everything in the menu sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, Chantel C and Elizabeth B's reviews are spot on. Read them! TLDR - Under Seasoned - Underwhelmed (except for Salmon C's). Disproportionate sauce to entree (gravy and syrup). 18% gratuity automatically added for ALL table sizes. The Dish - No sooner than our food arrives, we're greeted by a photographer. Felt like when you are at an amusement park and the people hit you up as soon as you walk in and ask if you want your photo taken for a souvenir. If you're gonna do this maybe have a designated area set up for the photographer with a backdrop instead of having photos taken while everyone is sitting at a table in front of their food. Otherwise, its strange and as my teenager would say...kinda cringe. Anyhow...on to the food. My order - Biscuits and gravy. The potatoes on the side (I'm allergic to potatoes and there's no substitutions). Eggs scrambled with cheese (cheese extra charge). The eggs were nice and cheesy but needed a bunch of salt and pepper. You get 2 biscuits and they are huge but the gravy to biscuit ratio is WAY OFF! After you finish up the gravy, the biscuits are dry. Ask for your gravy on the side, hopefully that will help. I mentioned the ratio being off to the server and asked for a little bit more gravy. Extra gravy - Extra charge. At least the gravy didn't taste like uncooked flour, but it was under seasoned. My friend sampled the potatoes and she said they were ok but needed more seasoning. But seriously WHY was EVERYTHING under seasoned. (confused look) Thank goodness there were 2 sets of salt and pepper on the table. No joke. My friends order - chicken and french toast. She said hers was good. Waffles were pretty big but you only got a tiny plastic portion cup of syrup. Think Wendy's plastic 2oz catsup cups size. And it wasn't even filled all the way up. Side orders - Hot links - these were good. I've had better ones though with more flavor. Bacon - friend said that was good. Extra side order - cause the ladies (sisters in town from Tucson and Charlotte NC) sitting next to us ordered them and they looked awesome. Southern Grits - Cheesy but again way under-seasoned. 3 Salmon Croquettes - This was seriously the best thing ordered. The flavor was amazing and when pared with the chipotle remoulade ... EVELATED! NEXT LEVEL! The ladies next to us asked how we liked the grits and salmon. They agreed that the grits were under seasoned. Honestly the salmon was the only thing we finished, it was that good! (note to SugarJam website admin - You need to update the SJ website online menu cause you're prices are not up to date. Salmon Croquettes are $11.99 online) I just checked a recent photo of the menu..the price is $12.99) We finally get our check and my friend left the tip. Which neither one of us noticed they add an 18% gratuity to even the smallest table. So the waitress got an extra cash tip, but her service was good. $30+ good, meh. We decided to leave shortly after the DJ started and it got seriously loud. So loud even in tucked in the corner i had to start yelling and couldn't hear a thing my friend was saying from across the table. I try to make my way to the restroom but they have tables so close together that it is hard to get around. Only 2 restrooms in the entire restaurant and had to wait in line. I know it is a restroom and people have to do their business, but please consider adding an auto air freshener to the ladies room at least cause i walked in and good lawd. Lastly, i was hoping to take home a dozen window pane cookies for the husband and kid, but dessert aren't even an option anymore. :( Took home a bunch of leftovers (biscuits, my extra gravy, the potatoes for the hub and kid, and my hot links). Family thought agreed that everything being under seasoned. Dana girl, I'm happy for your success but aside from the Salmon Croquettes, the kitchen staff missed the mark yesterday with flavor. :/ read more

I heard so much about this place i just i had to try it. It was underwhelming. It has a decent amount of space but the layout of it is very crowded get hard to maneuver. They also only have 2 bathrooms for the whole place which creates a line. They have a dj on the weekend who creates a nice vibe but beware it can get loud. The decor is a little eclectic. Food was OK most things were overpriced. The French toast was good and i liked the pecan syrup. We got the wings to share and it was just plain fried wingettes. Service was decent but we weren't checked on that much and took forever to get out servers attention to check out. I had high hopes and enjoyed what I saw on social media yet it didn't live up to the hype. read more

I came here for brunch on a Saturday. We had a reservation for 2pm and we came a little earlier. It was Jam packed and we didn't get seated until around 2:17pm. The DJ had everyone hyped though. The music was good. 3 of us split the mimosa flight. The drinks were good. We also got a complimentary shot because it was my friend's birthday. Everyone was nice and very laid back. The Belgian waffles were soft and fluffy. The chicken tenders were seasoned well but they were bit small. It's definitely a vibe here and the food is good but the service is kind of lacking in some areas. I would come back though for sure. read more
