SugarJam isn't really giving you a light, quick breakfast. It's giving you Southern comfort food, big flavors, indulgent portions and a whole brunch experience. The food came out hot and fast and our waiter was very personable. The artwork and vibrant colors of the restaurant are eye-catching and celebrates food and Southern identity. They have several options for mimosa flights and keep the vibes going with an in house DJ. I would highly recommend making a reservation.

My family and I visited this location on Sunday, July 19, at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate our sister's birthday. We made our reservation online and were seated right away, which made for a great start to our celebration. It took a little while for our waitress to come to our table, but the restaurant was very busy since it was the weekend. Once she arrived, she was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service throughout our visit. One thing we really enjoyed was the live DJ, who kept the atmosphere fun with excellent music. We were seated toward the back of the restaurant, which worked out perfectly for our large party and gave us plenty of space to enjoy our meal together. For drinks, we ordered two Bloody Marys, two beers, a mimosa flight, waters, and lemonades. The only disappointment was the Bloody Marys. For the price, we expected them to be garnished with olives and the traditional toppings that usually come with a Bloody Mary. Our table ordered a variety of dishes, including the Cinnamon Roll Pancakes, Chicken & Waffles, Flapjack Tenders, the French Toast Sandwich (served with breakfast potatoes and syrup), Oxtails with Dirty Rice, and Catfish & Grits. Overall, the food was delicious. The Cinnamon Roll Pancakes were good, although we expected a little more cinnamon roll flavor and icing, similar to what we've experienced at other restaurants. The biggest disappointment was the oxtails. While they were flavorful and well-prepared, the portion size was smaller than expected, especially considering the $43 price tag. A helpful tip for anyone visiting with a large group: the restaurant will only split the check into two separate bills, so it's a good idea to bring cash or plan your payment arrangements in advance. Overall, we had a wonderful experience celebrating our sister's birthday. The lively atmosphere, great music, delicious food, and attentive service made for an enjoyable brunch. We look forward to returning in the future. We also learned that the owner has another restaurant called Soulful Tacos, which we're excited to try soon.

SugarJam was the perfect restaurant to start our day while we were in Arizona! The restaurant was packed so we did have to wait until they could finish with other larger tables. But, they did have a free drink while we waited. The DJ was playing hit after hit...it made it hard to finish eating my food. Lol! But no oxtail was left behind! Food Drinks Atmosphere Service

Came here for brunch on Friday and got the brisket and biscuits again. Still a large portion, still pretty good. It did seem like it was a little bit different from last time, though I can't put my finger on why. Someone at my table did try the gravy that comes with the biscuits and gravy, and after tasting it, I'm thinking maybe that's why. I seemed a little less... just less. Not as pronounced, I'm not sure. Regardless, it was still good. I was so sad to see that the bakery is gone. I was really looking forward to visiting there and showing the people I came with. I had a reservation for 5 people at 10:30am and it was already very busy. It's definitely in your best interest to make a reservation when coming here!

The decor here is nice and even better in the bathroom (girls love a bathroom pic lol). The bartender was very attentive and also very helpful. He suggested the shrimp and grits which had a carb ball garnish. The crab balls were actually my favorites the shrimp were good also... The grits... Idk something was missing.

Yes yes and more yes. The food AMAZING. The drink tower was bomb. The music was booming and we was all in there jamming and having an amazing time. Service on point. They even helped my friend get her fat head of her fiancé out behind the couch when it fell. Just an amazing experience. I would recommend this place again and again.

I've been hearing great things about this brunch spot, especially for the food and the overall vibe--and it definitely lived up to the hype. I went with a party of 12, and they accommodated us really well. I originally wanted to try the Fried Lobster with Creole Shrimp and Crab N' Grits, but they had unfortunately run out of lobster during my visit. Even so, the alternatives did not disappoint. The strawberry shortcake French toast sticks were a standout, and the flame-roasted apple pie paired with wings, scrambled eggs, and roasted potatoes was just as impressive.Overall, great food, great atmosphere, and I'll definitely be back.

Someone recommended this place to me, and I finally had the chance to check it out with a family member recently. After looking over the menu, I ordered shrimp and grits with scrambled eggs and a croissant on the side, and the family member I went with ordered the fried catfish and grits. Taste wise, the shrimp and grits were okay. Unfortunately, the shrimp was a bit overcooked. The family member I went with enjoyed her fried catfish and grits, said it wasn't dry and didn't taste fishy. Overall, service was friendly, patient and fast. We went on a weekday so there was no wait. We really liked the casual upbeat atmosphere of this place. One thing that was most surprising about this place was that they automatically add an 18% gratuity to your bill regardless of party size. This is the first place I've ever seen do this.

Sugar jam was a jam and I loved every minute of it! By the Grace of God, we didn't have reservations, but were seated within 30m. We stood around and witnessed all the beautiful people roll in from all walks of life. Food is really that thing that will pull it all together. Pair that with some good tunes and a friendly staff, you're bound to spend the entire day there lol. Let's get to the food- Wings for the table- OK! Crispy, not saucy, just light and airy. It tasted slightly sweet with something else I can't place my finger on. French Toast with the grand mariner sauce- yes please and thank you! I did not taste the sauce, but the French toast tasted good. I had some egg whites and the chicken tenders with it. Not a fan of chicken tenders, but there's no substituting, so tenders it is. Mocktail with lemonade and ginger- I don't remember the name but that was quite refreshing. I would've opted for more ginger b/c I like it spicy , and it got the job done. My other homies had shrimp and grits, salmon croquettes. They enjoyed it. Shout out to our waiter Chance . Quite pleasant and had a great aura. He recommended some spots for us to see/explore and didn't rush us. I'd definitely return should I visit AZ again!

I went into SugarJam The Southern Kitchen with one mission: find elite shrimp and grits. What actually happened was far more dramatic. I accidentally discovered catfish and grits so good they completely hijacked my original plan and made me forget shrimp even existed. First of all, if you order this dish and DON'T add the house hot sauce, you are actively cheating yourself out of happiness. That sauce takes everything from "this is really good" to "I may need a moment alone with this plate." Perfect amount of heat, flavor, and Southern soul. Now let's discuss the bacon situation. The bartender, Bridgette, casually talked me into adding a side of bacon like it was no big deal. What arrived at the table looked less like breakfast meat and more like something excavated from Jurassic Park. That bacon was MASSIVE. Thick, smoky, crispy perfection. I pride myself on never leaving bacon behind under any circumstance... and yet this thing defeated me. Somewhere out there is a remaining slice that still haunts my conscience. Also, shoutout to Bridgette because she made a watermelon hibiscus drink so ridiculously good that I accidentally ordered a second one like I had nowhere to be and no responsibilities in life. Refreshing, smooth, dangerous in the best way. Beyond the food, the entire atmosphere was just a vibe. Great music, great energy, great service -- the kind of place where you immediately feel like you picked the right restaurant before the food even arrives. SugarJam doesn't just serve Southern food... they serve the kind of meal that makes you start planning your return trip before you've even paid the check. When I come back to Scottsdale, they can absolutely expect to see me again.

Love love looooooove this place! Before I got to experience it myself, I heard nothing but good reviews and I am so happy they exceeded my expectations! I had reservations for their Sunday brunch as a prebirthday celebration and let me say this -- I love their customer service!!! We arrived a little late due to traffic, no more than 10 mins, however we were immediately sat and service began! Our server was very friendly and made the experience feel more like I'd known him forever and this was our regular kick it spot! They had a live dj too -- music was amazing and he was a fellow Chicagoan, so that was even more exciting! The vibes were immaculate honestly, packed out too! Now let's get to my favorite part -- the FOOD!!! Omggggggg. It was so delicious! They were pretty busy, so there was a cute wait on the food, but that's because it comes out smoking fresh!!! Also, the wait isn't insane if you're there to enjoy the entire experience -- food, drinks, vibes and music! The head chef does a great job in her kitchen!! I had the Rasta pasta add oxtails and my best friend had the Whole Snapper -- talk about mmm mmm good!!!!! I can't wait to visit again!! I seen so many other things I wanted to try!! 10000/10 experience -- if you're in Phoenix/Scottsdale this place is a must.

Great atmosphere and people. Loved the chicken and whole wings which came out hot from the kitchen. Great portion of food for the price and the food was of good quality. Will be making this one of my favorite spots. Kudos to our server, Pearlisa who did an excellent job serving us.

Made my way here to support the business. I had no reservation and the place was packed. I opted to wait for an opening at the bar and about 20 to 30 minutes later I was in luck. The service was fast, the people were friendly, and the DJ Yoyito Sound was on point. After getting some recommendations from folks at the bar, I decided to get the Catfish and Southern Grits with a side of scrambled eggs with spinach and peppers. It was solid. I also had a mocktail that was some sweet concoction that was yummy.

By 11:30am, more people started showing up, just a handful of customers, but the place actually looked alive. The restaurant setting and decor created an inviting space. There was even a disco ball with lights spinning throughout the room. Country music played through the speakers. Live music was supposed to happen at 11:00am for Honky Tonk brunch on Sunday, but didn't. The musician actually arrived at 11:10am, then took another ten minutes to set up. It was worth the wait as Blaine Long was impressive and produced lovely sounds on the guitar, harmonica, and vocals, with songs like Jolene and a country version of Hallelujah entertaining guests. Staff provided attentive service. And my order took just 10 minutes to be ready. I got belle's biscuits and gravy with the eggs cooked scrambled, and a side of breakfast sausage. The sausage had a nice saltiness to it and really great flavor. The biscuits were flatter than I'm used to but were still soft and fluffy. I enjoyed my entire dish and finished every last bite. That location became something of a semi regular stop even after I moved to the other side of the valley. I use to introduce all my friends when they visited me to Bootleggers at that location. After it closed, my husband and I decided to do a small gathering (5 people) at the Scottsdale location expecting the same experience at 4pm. Oh god how wrong I was. TLDR: If you want to be full after you ate, cool, ice in your drink, ADA accessible and have clean bathrooms, this place is not recommended. Full Review: We walked into an empty restaurant and you could tell the AC was dying/dead. It wasn't as hot as normal and we figured a place has a problem every once in awhile and continued to stay. We should have left the moment we got there The 2 girls working appearently never understood the concept ice. The water had like 3 half melted cubes in it. Considering that even though it was 120, but 101 out, and we were seated inside, you'd think there could at least be that. Now this where you might say "wow, you sound picky and entitled. its just eater." I wish I had the forethought to take pictures. Because if you were there, you would get it. I had to ask for refills for the table because they never even tried and were barely around. Reminder the place was empty minus us at 4pm. The ladies restroom had a small layer of water and I had to move random furniture to help get my mother (who is a veteran in a wheelchair) into the bathroom. It smelled horrific and was just gross. Getting her in and out was like a puzzle. So if you are wheelchair bound looking for ADA friendly, skip this unless you have a friend willing to just move the stuff in your way because there is no way you can do it. Now the Food. You would think that at least the food would be fine. That was of course the main reason I brought people there. The Apple pie moonshine and Peach moonshine were fanatic. The food tasted delicious BUT...big BUT here all the portions are hyper reduced. Like I use to get 5 eggs on the deviled eggs, only 3. The sweet potato fries of heaven, was half of the portion. Same with every single appetizer. My pork belly tacos had 3 tacos but the plating wasn't just different, but the tacos were ridiculously small. The only item that had the same portions I was accustomed to was the BBQ platter. My husband quietly paid the bill (around 300) and we left to find a place with AC and apologized profusely to our family. They were hot, still hungry and my mother felt like a burden due to the staff. I don't know if that was just the naturla difference between the 2 locations or if it has new management but, Good bye Bootleggers. NEVER AGAIN. Which is really sad because this use to be one of my favorites.

Tucked back in a small building, just off Southern Avenue, you'll find Southern Fried. It is a small little walk in store front, so plan ahead to order out. We went ahead and ordered online to make things simple and easy. As shown on their building and advertised they show they serve Jamaican food so I was pretty let down when I looked at the menu to discover they do not have any Jamaican food. Seeing pictures of previous Yelp reviews of jerk chicken and oxtail left me bummed. We ended up ordering the fried okra, fried mushrooms, the 2 fish and 5 shrimp combo, along with the fried catfish and fries. We took our food to go and headed home, just around the corner. Once opening the containers i instantly got excited about the mushrooms. Anyone that knows me knows i am mushroom obsessed. With a quick dip in the ranch that came with and popping one into my mouth.... Yummmm! The okra was a bit of a miss. It seems they were still a bit slimy. Moving along to our main courses, I was disappointed to find that our fish was packed on top of our fries and the fries were very limp, soggy and unseasoned. I think packing the takeout differently could easily eliminate this issue. The catfish and shrimp were seasoned to perfection. They both had a perfect blend of spice and a light and crispy batter. I would love to see Jamaican food on the menu, as the advertising is a bit deceptive. Overall I would definitely be willing to try them again and would love to give one of their burgers a taste test.
