The cheeseburgers and souvlaki are my favorites. This place is a classic. Totally worth the try.

Definitely worth a stop almost every time you're in Spartanburg. The parking lot was packed, but I did find a spot. The line was long, however, it wasn't outrageous. By the time you figure out what you want, it is time for you to place your order, and you place your order in the area almost as soon as you walk in. The menu has a variety if you do not want a burger. I went with the bacon cheeseburger plate which was soo good! Everything is practically cooked to order which I appreciate. The only thing I didn't like was how the teas and lemonades were sitting out given the time we are in with Covid, monkey pox, and even just your basic cold. It didn't take too long for the order to be ready. Like I said everything was delicious, cooked well and fresh. The restroom was dated but decently clean. I can't wait until the next time I'm in the area and have the opportunity to stop in again for that juicy burger and good french fries! read more

The fish on a bun sandwich is one of the best treats at Sugar And Spice. it is a huge bun with two very thick fish fillets, and you will struggle to eat it all. It comes with good tartar sauce, and excellent slaw. You can opt to substitute onion rings in place of the fries and the onion rings are probably the best you will ever eat as long as they're hot. Was traveling back from Blue Ridge parkway and stopped in Spartanburg for gas at Costco and lunch. I didn't want a chain so I found this gem that's been around over 60 years. I got a Jumbo Cheeseburger, half onion rings and half fries, and a sweet tea. The burger was perfect. The patties were seasoned, toppings fresh, cheese melted between the Pattie's, and final touch cut in half so easy to eat The onion rings were somehow cooked crispy and yet not greasy. The coating stayed in place bite after bite. The fries were just as good, not greasy, nice crunch and fluffy potato inside. I had to try the dessert after this wonderful meal and chose the Hot Fudge cake. I was not prepared for what I got. I can describe it as a cake ice cream sandwich covered in hot fudge with 4 mounds of whip cream in the corners. It also was delicious The service was fantastic also. This is a family owned place and one of the descendants of the originators was working the ordering window and helped me pick my meal. The cashier was friendly and the person who I asked about the hot fudge cake said no problem, I make you one. I found I delayed her break but she smiled and handed it to me. I also noticed someone had a problem with their order and approached an employee. Steak kebabs are the best, but everything is good. Great prices, huge portions. It's nothing fancy but definitely a Spartanburg classic.

Sugar n Spice is only a year younger than I am, and I'm 64. I grew up eating there, and I love their cheeseburger with slaw and their onion rings. They're a Spartanburg fixture like Wade's and the Beacon, and their food is still delicious after all these years. read more

First time here and got some amazing chicken tenders, fries, onion rings and sweet tea! They were very busy and had to wait maybe 10 mins to order but to me that's a good sign that the food is good so I won't complain! My husband ordered the same thing. Everyone including the owner (i think that's who he was) was very nice and patient. I would definitely go back to try that chocolate cake they have and maybe the BLT. The Spice has gone downhill. I wish I had taken a photo of my to go order of a cheeseburger and a large onion ring so you could see how they prepared my plate. The cheeseburger, cut in half, each half stacked on top of each other, wrapped and squished in the side of the box against what was supposed to be a large onion order. The cheeseburger had lost its shape and appeal. I believe they pulled all the scrappiest onion rings for my order. I ate inside a while back and this is not how my food was served. If I had opened the box before getting home, I would have gotten my $13 back. One of the owners was there too. read more

First of all Sugar'n Spice has been around for decades. I have just moved to the area, and the parking lot is usually packed during lunch and dinner times. So, I thought I'd give it a try. The staff are very friendly, the restaurant itself is dated, along with the parking lot which looks like a former drive in restaurant. I've been there twice, the first time I got a roast beef sandwich with fries and slaw. The roast beef was grisly and couldn't eat about 1/3 of it. The fries are crinkle cut (not hand cut in house)...they were ok, but nothing special. I also got their slaw, and found it to mushy and tasteless. My second visit I had a double cheeseburger, fries, and slaw. I was hungry and figured I'd give it another try. The burger was OK, the fries and slaw were pretty much the same as my first time dining there. I am giving it 4-stars because I might be missing something that keeps the restaurant packed, and their obvious connection to the community. Another reason I didn't go with 2-3 stars was their friendliness of the staff. I doubt I'll be back. read more

The food at this place is i give a 10 i got the bacon cheese burger and the burger was amazing but the bacon was a little salty. Sugar-n-Spice is a classic family drive-in that has been in Spartanburg for over 50 years, and for good reason! (Check out their Facebook page for some cool retro pictures.) The menu is straightforward, and you order right at the counter when you walk in. As you order from the friendly staff, you can watch the cooks grilling and frying away. They'll put your food on a cafeteria-style tray, and you can continue down the line to get your drink (sweet tea) and pay at the register at the end. If you haven't been in a couple of years, you'll notice some renovations of the dining area with new carpet, tables and chairs, that make for a really nice experience. ​I typically stick with my favorite - cheeseburger-a-plenty with a mix of fries and onion rings - but the roast beef sandwich is amazing too. With the "a-plenty", you can get all fries, all onion rings, or a mix - I highly suggest you at least get mixed for the onion rings. The batter is thin and crispy, a perfect compliment to any of the meals. At some point I will have to branch out and get the souvlaki, which I've heard wonderful things about, but this burger is one to try in Spartanburg. "The Spice" is great in many circumstances: come out with your family, after a particularly long night, or on a holiday weekend like this one! The picture below will speak for it self hamburger steak is raw the fries and the onion rings were not good at all and the slaw had no taste, the ice tea was the only thing good. This used to be the best restaurant but I don't know what happened, I ask that they take more time with cooking and less time counting the $$$$. Went to Skillet only to find a note on the door saying they were closed due to hood problems, so we went down the street to try Sugar n Spice. Burgers had been pre-cooked and then thrown back on the grill when ordered, not good. Onion rings had a heavy batter on them but they had almost no flavor at all. I took a single bite of the coleslaw and didn't want another. The one decent thing was the French fries, which were actually good. Classic place to get a bite to eat in Spartanburg,SC. They have some of the best burgers and hot dogs in town. Everything is always fresh and hot. Fantastic Fried fish and many other options too. We stopped in here on a lark after seeing the sign. They don't offer carside service anymore but you can still park under the remenants of their Jetsons style carport. It's not in the best shape so do so at your own peril. The food was outstanding, the roast beef sandwhich was made with beef that had actually been roasted and sliced that day. The jumbo cheeseburger more than lived up to it's name and when combined with the aplenty helping of fries and onion rings left me in a true food coma. More than enough for two people, this spread set us back a mere $12. I would highly reccomend the Sugar -n- Spice to anyone and would eat here over the Beacon any day of the week. read more

I found myself in Spartanburg around lunch time on Monday, and decided to visit the Sugar -n- Spice. It's been mumble-mumble years since I was last here, when my then-girlfriend was attending nearby Converse College. The place was pretty much as I (fondly) remembered it. The prices have increased a bit during my absence, but the roast beef sandwich was as tasty as before. The fries AND onion rings that come with the meal were ok, but not special. I think The Beacon does better onion rings, but it will take another trip to Spartanburg to determine if that is true. Perhaps I can compare chili-cheeseburgers at that time, as well. The food is always great here. The cheeseburger a-plenty's are usually my go-to meals but if I need to eat without carbs I get the grilled chicken salad. The atmosphere is awesome. I highly recommend it to anybody visiting or living in Spartanburg! read more

The circa 1961 wavy awning covering the center of the parking lot attracted me to this one of a kind fried food museum. Much of the original appeal is preserved, but the hand painted menu is sadly covered with a plastic menu banner purchased from sign company...or office depot. Instead of capitalizing on the nostalgia of the place, they have covered it up. I wonder how long ago they abandoned real plates, or even square cafeteria trays in favor of styrofoam everything. The chicken came out hot and crispy, with two flavor notes....chicken, and salt. The frys where frozen crinkle cut. The cole slaw had no sweet, no tart, was warm, and tasted like, salt. I guess their bill for seasonings is pretty low. They have a gem. They need to realize what makes the place cool, and embrace that. Food tastes change, and 1961 was 57 years ago. read more

Was very interested in trying the food here. I'm from up North. The black lady with the short hair was very rude and nasty. I told her I needed to use the restroom she cut me off mid-sentence saying, "NO NO NO I ASKED OF YOU WERE ORDERING SOMETHING TO DRINK." So I left. I used to live in Spartanburg and visited this place once a week; always getting the roast beef aplenty. 13 years later I return and order it and it's like I never left. There are no words to describe their roast beef sandwich. You don't eat it. You inhale it. Crinkle fries, real onion rings and the non-soupy slaw round out the meal. Decided to update my review. Every week if I have a craving for burgers and fries, I get that craving from Sugar'n Spice. What makes their food so great is how fresh it is -- from their burgers, fries and grilled chicken tenders. When you pick up food here, it is packed in cardboard and not cheapo styrofoam, so don't worry about your fries getting soggy on the way home. You can taste the bacon and char when biting that bacon cheeseburger. Their grilled chicken is pretty spot-on as well. The place can be busy at nights but easily worth it. Sugar'n Spice is another Spartanburg local favorite of mine and it shall be yours, too, for delicious charbroiled food. The Beacon SUCKS compared to it. read more
