The food here is amazing!!! Very flavorful to the last drop. I ordered an order of Wings and their Catfish Special for the day. Wings was delisioso (in the words of Dora the Explorer)! The Catfish was fried to perfection. It basically melted in my mouth! So enjoyable. It came with Fries. I'm not a Fry Girl but they was scrumptious! I've never been to Richmond before so I didn't really know what type of food to get while on my one night stay just driving through. But we had just drive down the east coast and past Maryland and it made us think of crabs. Figuring Richmond was close enough to the ocean, I looked up and found Sugar's. With zero expectations we drove away from the campus area we were staying, and into what was clearly a local's neighborhood. I knew the place was gonna be legit when I saw the long line of NOT college students. We ordered a crab cake sandwhich with fries, popcorn shrimp and a 5 piece fried fish plate. Crab cake was amazing, and very little breading so it was just tons and tons of crab. The fries were great, and the popcorn shrimp had whole little shrimps inside. Usually my experience with popcorn shrimp is like a lot of breading and an iota of actual shrimp that you can't even see. Not here. WHOLE shrimpies enveloped in delicious crispy batter. I only had one or two pieces of the fish and the flavor was fantastic. They do leave the skin on underneath the batter, so that's the only negative, but to be honest it's not enough to care. Sugar's Crab Shack Richmond VA Review About a year ago, I traveled far and wide across RVA to find a place that served some decent fried fish. You see good people, me and fried fish have a unique relationship in that I would do almost anything for a perfectly seasoned piece of fried fish. Sadly, there aren't too many five star places that sell fried fish in Richmond VA. So I searched long and hard until I stumbled across Sugar's Crab Shack. And call me Tucan Sam, because the intoxicating scent of fresh fish being fried in a fantastical fashion could be detected from several blocks away, however there was one major problem: The line that people stood in to place their order was longer than the line at the DMV (from back in the day). Nevertheless, I opted to stand in the line with roughly 40 people in front of me. But after waiting over 20 minutes and there being no hope of getting near the front, despair had set in and I decided to cut my losses and head back across the river . Fast forward to two days ago, I was back around Northside, traveling down Chamberlayne Ave and I noticed that Sugar's Crab Shack didn't have a line of people waiting to order. "Could this be a fluke?" I asked myself. But like a detective in The First 48, I had to investigate . So I got in line and placed my order which was 6 pieces of fried fish and a side of Mac and Cheese which cost under $20. And after waiting roughly 7 minutes, the order was ready. When I saw the size of the fish that came with my order... I said to myself "BAYBEE!!! Take my money, my house and my car". But of course, sight and smell alone wasn't enough proof that Sugar's Crab Shack was in fact "the real deal". The true proof was in the taste test. So I took one bite of a piece of fried fish and I was immediately transported back to June 23rd 1990 . This was the date that I tasted my first piece of fried fish and boy, let me tell you that the experience was similar to a kid eating candy for the first time. With every bite of my Sugar's Crab Shack fish, I felt the need to bust out in a Praise Break dance because I had truly tasted the best fried fish that Richmond had to offer. Sure there were a few bones in the fish, but a few bones never hurt anyone. If anything, they help build character! So on a scale of 1-5, I would give Sugar's Crab Shack fried whiting a solid 5. The taste was amazing, the fish remained hot as I traveled back home to eat it, the price point for the fish was justified with the portion size and the customer service from the employees at the restaurant was top notch. So if you're in Richmond and you haven't been to Sugar's Crab Shack, then you're definitely missing out. Check them out expeditiously! read more

Once I was able to park, I quickly realized there was a long line of people waiting to order. It was freezing outside, but everyone was patiently waiting to order. That's when I got excited because then I KNEW the food was going to be good!!! And good it was!! It really upsets me to have to write this review but it has to be done. I have been hearing about this place for the past few years and every time I come home something gets in the way of me trying the food. I was a faithful customer at Eggleston's (I used to live a few blocks away), an occasional visitor of Croaker Spot (I had moved away already) and I heard it was the same owners. My mom was super excited and had brought it up to me multiple times before I went over. Since it is pretty popular I knew that I would have to wait but the line of 11 people took over an hour to get their orders in. Some folks didn't respect the cute little social distancing crabs on the ground and crowded each other without masks, it was a bit nerve wrecking. When I finally made it to the front, I place my order with a very nice older gentleman and all of the people seem pretty nice and very busy getting things together. I thought it was odd that I didn't smell food the entire time I was there. This is usually this is my cue to 'exit stage left' and go somewhere else, but I have been told by many many people that this is the best place in Richmond for fried fish and seafood. My mom decided on the family meal with string beans, potato salad and the included coleslaw. Wanting a little bit of variety I also ordered a deviled crab in the wing dings to take on my trip back to New York for the next day. The total was about $48, and after checking the menu, the prices were higher than when my mom last bought some of the items. It's ok, I thought, this is going to be amazing! I found a great seat out front where I got great views of the eclectic property and beautiful flowers. About 25 to 30 minutes later my food was ready to go. I was starving so I grabbed one of the wing dings, a tiny square of toast from the box and sampled it. The amount of disappointment was unmeasurable when I discovered it was 1 of those frozen pre-battered wings you get from places like Costco and BJ's! This is a soul food restaurant in RVA! I expect this in other places, but home? Absolutely not! That is unacceptable. They ended up in the trash. I got to my nana's house where everyone was waiting. I fixed my grandma's plate and she refused to eat most of the food. I thought she was being picky, but then I tried my own and instantly understood. - The fish was flavorless and tough. Which fish I received, Idk, I was not given a choice. - String beans were most certainly canned and seasoned super salty (glory or sylvias) - potato salad was almost vinegary with the copious amounts of mustard and relish. - Coleslaw was bland, not inedible after a little salt and pepper. - The wing dings, again, frozen, pre-made, fatty wastes of money on a bed of chopped toast. - that deviled crab was the best thing in the bag but it was tiny, and average at best. A bag of food where the majority of it ended up in the garbage for $50......And most of it inedible was the most upsetting thing ever. I do not get home to seey family often and this was supposed to be a celebratory moment, I assure you, it was not. The portions were plentiful, but the quality was not there. For appetizers ringing in at $7 for 6 wingettes, and another $7 for the smallest deviled crab I've seen in ages, the juice was certainly not worth the squeeze. We stopped in specifically to try the Sol Taco cart at Sugar's. First of all, it took FOREVER. Second, the tacos don't taste like tacos. Not a hint of what you'd expect in a taco, except that it's on a soft, flour tortilla. We tried chicken, fish and shrimp. I only ate the meat out of each one, because the other accompaniments were not good. Third, you can't even pick up the tacos to eat them; they're way too stuffed. Normally that might be a good thing, but the "insides" aren't good, so more is just more in this case. Fourth, the shrimp fajitas were the best thing we tried, but again, they don't taste how you'd expect. STRONG Old Bay seasoning on these, which is a little weird. But if you want one they do offer free refills on lemonade, mango or cherry drinks. I've tried them all and the mango and cherry are really good. Waters are $1 for the cup. The sandwich was great. Onion rings were beer battered and cooked to perfection. Also ordered lemon chess mini pie and sweet potato pie at $5 per pie. Clearly the pie can serve 2-3 people. Very good. Stopped by this place with a couple friends. Most of the people in line were wearing masks - spaced out not quite to 6 ft but still pretty good. This is a takeout place with plenty of outdoor table seating and shading over the tables - those are spaced apart. Really great atmosphere with music playing in the background. We split the sugar's sampler - fried oysters crispy and juicy, full of flavor. The whiting fish was so crispy and fresh. And the soft shell crab was the star of the show - I could just eat 2 or 3 of those. Todd who was taking orders suggested the potato salad and that was so rich, plenty of eggs. The devil crab cake I didn't care too much for. We got extra fish with the order. We stayed until past closing until 10/1030, and everyone there was so nice. We had two people stop by and ask if we needed anything even after they closed. We struck up a conversation with Todd and told him we missed out on the tartar sauce and he meant to order cornbread. He came and brought us a giant slice of cornbread on the house. That was the perfect dessert - warm, rich, sweet - best cornbread I've had in Richmond. At first, I thought it was a mustard-based potato salad; but, to my delight, it had loads of egg in it and the hard boiled egg yokes added to the color. And, I'm beginning to realize why it's called "Sugar's Crab had mustard in it; with a touch of "Sugar" as only Sugar knows how to season her salads, including the coleslaw. Now, for the TEAser. I must say I was absolutely delighted to have Sugar's sweet tea because it was brewed perfectly -- strong and not bitter! I'm not one for very sweet tea and Sugar knows the perfect measure or must have touched the tea with her little finger cause it was perfectly sweet.
