I always start with the chicken or beef Pelmeni as an appetizer, which never disappoints. They serve their homemade pita bread with butter, a simple but delicious touch. For my main dish, I order the mixed grill--it's truly mind-blowing, always soft, juicy, and cooked to perfection. However, their Adana (beef) Kebap is a bit below average, tasting more like a frozen version, which could use some improvement. The small salad portion is also too small--it feels more like a sample plate, and they could definitely size it up. The restaurant is usually very quiet, which means the service is good and quick, and the staff is friendly. We were seated immediately, peruse the menu, placed our order and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly our dishes began to arrive. From salad to dessert each dish arrived with appropriate time in between courses to savor each one without feeling rushed. Absolutely awful experience. If you are Turkish, stay away from this place you will hate it. We ordered Iskender Kebab, and it was a complete disaster. Instead of thinly sliced meat, they served us something unrecognizable. The baklava was soggy and soft, not even close to the real thing. The künefe was a joke the cheese was disgusting, and the syrup (şerbet) tasted like warm sugar water. Hands down, the worst so-called "Turkish" restaurant in Massachusetts. read more

We picked up the mixed platter and a kunafe from Sultan's. The kabab did not taste like Turkish kabab. They did not provide any salad, bread, or sauces. Neither my husband nor I wanted to cook/clean-up for dinner last night. We were tired of the same old options, so we decided to give Sultan Family Restaurant a try. From the clean (and quite large) dining room, to the helpful staff to the really good food, we were so happy to find this gem so close to home. The bread is homemade and delicious and that Borsch is the best I've ever had. I loved it so much I ordered another bowl! We recently found a gem of a restaurant for dinner. Sultan is located off a busy intersection, and it is easy to drive past without noticing it. We were very pleasantly surprised. It was a Saturday night but it was not busy. The service was friendly and attentive. The bread is hot and delicious!. It was perfect for dipping in our hummus appetizer and olive oil. We ordered lamb and chicken kabobs, and the meat was tender and flavorful. These came as complete meals with bulgar, rice, a large very hot green pepper, and a cooked tomato. The surrounding light above us changed colors while we ate. This, and the booths and chair styles, felt retro. The prices are reasonable, and there is ample parking. This is not a review I wanted to leave as I support small business and have enjoyed their food in the past. This time, I got such bad food poisoning that I wound up in the ER the day after eating here and without eating anything else in between that could've made me sick. I had the homemade pickles (only ate a few bites as they tasted off) and then the beef pilmeni dumplings. I was so I'll they first thought I might have to have my gall bladder removed, but it was actually fine. Just severe gastroenteritis caused by food poisoning. Be careful, folks. read more

Walked in to a pretty empty house on a Friday night and were slightly confused if it was a restaurant, banquet hall, or someone's house.. But were greeted by a kind wait staff and given a table. We walked into this place on a Monday evening and it was quite empty. The decor is spartan but we were greeted by a friendly young man who immediately showed us to a table. We decided to try several different dishes and we're very pleased with all of them. The food has a home cooked flavor that relies heavily on the Russian Turkish heritage. The pilimenki was delicious and you could taste the spices and onions with a slight buttery overnote. The chuburek had very thin fried dough crust with pieces of ground beef. The beef pide was almost an entire loaf of bread with beef, onions and peppers. Lastly we tried the beef shish which was nicely spiced. Came on a whim one night for a quick dinner. Large dining space with only a few occupied tables, decor was minimal but nice, music was traditional. We tried the beef kabob and the hinkal for our entrees....both had great flavor, however the portions were on the small side. The hinkal, for instance, doesn't come with anything, so besides the complimentary bread, you're left pretty hungry....a soup or salad to start would be a nice accompaniment, but you'd have to order that separately. For dessert we tried the baklava....again, small piece but excellent in taste! Definitely wanted more! I've been here a handful of times for takeout and wasn't disappointed. We've had the same go-to's plenty. Chick shish-kebab platter, carrot salad and fried veggie salad along with a side kebab order. Those times everything was mouth-watering deliciousness. Tender flavorful marinated chicken breast kebabs. They've now changed from chicken breast to chicken thighs. I absolutely dislike dark meat and therefore was thoroughly disappointed once I got home to eat this once delicious and much-anticipated meal. This place seems quite interesting from the outside. It's clean and well situated. It has plenty of parking. The staff is friendly but perhaps a bit young and unable to recognize that a restaurant has to be given I'm beyond. Your staff was mostly teenage and seemed to be socializing to the exclusion of the patrons. I'm a fan of Middle Eastern and subcontinental I've never had Turkish or Uzbek cuisine. Upon asking one of the waitstaff, the owners are Russified Turks, Chechens, and Uzbeks. The menu seems pretty extensive. The homemade Turkish bread is excellent. The lentil soup was also very good. The lamb kebabs with bulgar and pepper were also good. Perhaps it is simply my own preference, but I prefer my food somewhat spicier. read more

We love this place,and I I'm very happy to be able to praise and thank them!! We noticed it while driving by, and have been going there every week or so ever since. We were sad to see it closed temporarily because of Covid, but they're up and running now. The food is just delicious, the menu is broad, the prices are reasonable, and the wait staff is friendly. My favorite dishes are Xey (marinated fish) and Pelmenyi (dumplings); my girlfriend particularly likes the Adana Kabob, the mixed grill, the hummus, and the borscht. Their bread is very good too. Nothing we've tried has been a disappointment. The prices are very reasonable and the place is hardly ever crowded, except occasionally when they're hosting a party. Their parties are very lively and I get the impression that they're for groups of their local friends and relatives. I should mention that there's another excellent Turkish restaurant, also named Sultan, near Exit 25 off I-84 just west of Waterbury, CT. That's a bit far for us, though. If it were nearer, we'd probably alternate between the two Sultans. read more

I'm part Turkish and part Greek, so I decided to try Sultan's with my son on a Friday evening. Prior to becoming a restaurant, the building had been a bicycle shop, which I frequented, and prior to that, a restaurant. It's on a side street visible from Sarat Ford. Plenty of parking in what appears to be a safe area. Very clean and well done conversion from a bike shop. The main dining area, in ceramic tile, has room for at least six to eight additional tables. There's handicap ramp access. The waitstaff is attentive, friendly and prompt. Turkish music plays softly in the background. And customers, causally dressed families and couples, were plentiful by the time we left at about 7 p.m., which impressed us since the restaurant has only been open one month, according to our waitress. I ordered Vareniki, which were boiled potato dumplings simmered in butter with sour cream. Think of them as Polish pierogi. Very tasty. My son ordered mixed stuffed veggie plate comprised of a stuffed pepper, two stuffed grape leaves and stuffed cabbage, with a dolop of plain yogurt. He oved it. Said it was the closest in taste to what his Greek grandmother, my mother, cooks in authentic Greek style. He also ordered a ground beef kebab skewer, which was about an 1 1'2" diameter by 8" long serving, with sour cream and onions atop pita bread. He said the spices and flavoring were scrumptious and we both couldn't believe its $3.50 cost. As a bonus, without our asking, our waitress delivered two bowls of Kaynatma soup, at no charge on the house, as we awaited our main courses. It reminded me of a delicious beef stew made into a soup. Potato, carrots, beef, and slices of red pepper. Sultan is worth a try even if you're not Turkish, Greek or have a similar ethnic background. There are plenty of kebab disses - chicken, salmon, beef and lamb. Three different salads if you're a vegetarian. All kinds of mouth-watering desserts like baklava and Nutella crepes. A children's menu offers the standard burgers, chicken tenders and nuggets. Our dinners, with water, no drinks, cost $28. Well worth it. We hope business flourishes because Sultan is a welcome addition to Agawam. Similar to the Lebanese food-serving Nadim's in Springfield, it offers flavorful, authentic mediterranean fare at reasonable prices. read more

If there's one thing that bugged me was the lack of a waitress keeping her eyes peeled for those who needed water after eating the hot pepper & seemingly not being alert so thus the star penalty. The beef, lamb skewers and chicken were over done and VERY tough -- I think the chicken must have been a couple days old. The baklava was so-so. I'd like to give this place the benefit of the doubt that the rest of their positive reviews are more accurate and maybe our lack luster experience was because they also had a large party going on at the same time so perhaps the kitchen was just overwhelmed...
