My friends and I checked out the bakery before walking around the market and came back just before leaving to place our order. I ordered the Honey Garlic Bread. The combo sounded strange to me, but it looked so good I had to try it. And boy, am I glad I did! The stuffing tasted like creamcheese, but I'm not positive that's what it was lol. PSA this place has bingsu!!! I feel like most people don't know this and only know about the bakery part of Sumi's. There are pretty few bingsu spots in Pittsburgh, and this one is so good and the prices aren't too steep! It's a perfect summer treat. We got matcha, which comes topped with cornflakes and has mochi inside, as well as sesame red bean, which has sesame/injeolmi powder & condensed milk on top and mochi inside. Both were incredibly tasty and not too heavy or sweet. The seating inside is pretty limited and not the cutest since it is primarily a bakery, which is probably the only complaint I have. It can feel a bit rushed if there are people waiting for your table. Would recommend if you're looking for a light refreshing treat in Squirrel Hill! (Also their bakery items and cakes are wonderful as well -- I've had the matcha cake from them multiple times and it's the perfect level of sweetness. An awesome Korean bakery! All of the items I got were definitely high quality. I think I prefer this place over Pink Box, but I'll need to try more to be sure. I ordered the condensed milk loaf, twisted donut, plain buttercream bread, and the coffee bun. My favorite of the items was by far the coffee bun, which I was quite surprised by! It had nice, crispy edges full of sweet, but not too sweet, coffee flavor. The inside was soft and had hints of coffee as well. Overall, very good! And good portion for the price. The twisted donut reminded me of just a regular donut sprinkled with sugar. It wasn't anything too special or extraordinary, but it was well made. The inside was soft, and it was very sweet. The plain buttercream bread was surprisingly not that sweet! The buttercream is quite rich and creamy. I will say, I would have liked a bit more of it, as the bread really dominated the flavor here. Still, great. I was a tad bit disappointed with the condensed milk loaf, but it was still great. I was expecting a bit more milky flavor and sweetness, but the hints of condensed milk are very light. The bread is still soft and fluffy, and a solid deal for the price. All in all, I really enjoyed this place. The desserts were all high quality and pretty fairly priced in my opinion. Highly rated by many but for me, not as much. Bingsoo shaved ice was pretty good but just way too overpriced at $13 for what you get. The ice is fluffy and bits of chewy mochi mixed in for the red bean version. Improvements can be made to this offering by adding something like condensed milk. Compared to traditional shaved ice, it does not get as slushy at the end. Brought home the mocha buttercream bun and bun was quite stale and buttercream itself was not impressive. Pinkbox down the street has their buns beat at a lower price. Twice tried, that's about it for me. read more

I stumbled upon Sumo's while I was exploring Squirrel Hill over the weekend. I did not know what to expect. I asked the person working the register what she recommended and she told me that they were known for their butter cream. And boy was she right. It might have been the best cream I've ever had. I got a donut with butter cream as well as a mocha bread with butter cream and both were fantastic. I also got s small loaf of honey butter bread that tasted absolutely amazing. Best spot for Bingsoo in Pittsburgh. I came here last November and was pretty disappointed. However, I came here recently and was super impressed by the bingsoo this time. We got the fruit bingsoo, and the presentation was great. The fruit tasted fresh, and the chewy dough and red bean inside added a great touch to the dessert. The shaved ice also melted into my mouth, with the fruit adding just the right amount of sweetness. I would definitely come back here again and introduce my friends to this place as well. I have heard great things about their cakes as well, so I'll definitely have to try it next time I need one. Besides the food, I really enjoyed the small and cozy vibe of the place. It never seems like this place is open at times when I'm in the area, but I finally found time to make it out! I've tried their soboro bun, chocolate cake, and strawberry cake, all of which have tasted amazing. The cakes are really light and airy-- they use whipped cream as their frosting which I'm a big fan of. My main issue with this cakery is how expensive it is. When pink box bakery is literally right across the street, it's hard to pay $4 for one bun. At $30 for a cake, I thought it was decently reasonable-ish (...but I'm from NYC), but I was irritated by the lack of transparency of their prices. There were no signs in the display case saying how much they were. You just kinda tell them what you want, they ring you up, and there's the price. I haven't tried their bingsoo yet, but I definitely do want to at some point. I've been to the store two separate times and both times the person who was working the cashier was extremely helpful. They recommended cake flavors and bun options to me and brought out my wrapped goodies to me as I waited at a table. I only had one pastry from here, but it's so bad I have no interest in wasting more money on gambles. I tried the green tea cream bread. The green tea cream is good, but the bread itself is just awful, dry and stale like an old dinner roll. It's not even filled, just hard bread sliced in two with cream spread inside. My SO and I drove from Marianna to get here. We were super excited. And it turned out to be just as awesome as we imagined. We got quite a few buns and each one was delicious! We are not used to an area like that. Parking with a meter, there were no meters where we moved from and it was a rude awakening when we got a $25 ticket. So if you're not familiar with the area like us, watch out for the meters! This place was cute and I can't wait to go back and try more goodies! I wanted to like this place. I was actually thrilled to find it online. I drove there today (Saturday 11:30am) and to my disappointment found nothing like the pictures of the desserts I saw from other Yelpers. Not a single cupcake! For starters there was hardly anything to choose from. The shelves in the big case were almost empty except for a few small cakes and slices of cake in plastic containers, and all the cases above it were empty! There was bread on the shelves to the left but that was about it. I asked the cashier how late they were open and she replied 6:00pm. I'm curious to know if they are going to be baking more items to sell or are they going out of business soon(?) The lighting was terrible as well. It was dark and gloomy, not the ambiance one would expect for a bakery with delicious cakes. I ended up buying the strawberry cake (pictured below) and taking it to go. This is my favourite cakery in the world! Their cakes are very light (both the sponges and the cream) and have real fruits in them. I'm going to write the honest truth. I don't care if it's libellious. If you don't like it, feel free to Sumi. What to get: Bubble Tea... the amazing black milk tea and the perfect honeydew. What not to get: Sued I thought you said you didn't mind getting sued: I changed my mind. So Sumi. Let's start with the mediocre elements of this Korean bakery. I'm not as impressed as others by the cakes, or the expensive Korean ice. My experience with Sumi was at first a one-star-type-thing. The young girl (not the owner) was so put off that I came in 15 min before closing. She didn't want to make the shaved ice, and was complaining in Korean to another young employee. She made the ice but wouldn't give it to me because she had no box to put it in (what? I can't even). She begrudingly gave my money back. Said yes to makign me bubble tea instead, but then no because she had no tapioca. Wtf. I shouldn't have gone back, but I did. I'm glad I did. I got the chance to try the ice on my second visit. It's bizarre, indescribable Korean shaved ice, which will set you back $10 but it's the size of a house so it's worth it... maybe. Except I don't really like it. Can't they make it in a smaller size? It's a lot like Taiwanese shaved ice, or a Halo Halo in some ways (from the Philippines). It's an experience, for sure. Not one that I will repeat on a regular basis, but it's well worth a try just to say that you had it. I can't really describe what's in it, it's a little of everything from fruit and ice to syrup and jelly to sweetcorn and bean paste. Bizarre. While the dessert is just ok, the Bubble Tea is so good I went back for a Honeydew which was also excellent. The Black Milk tea is phenomenal. Tastes like heaven. Very good job. Right up there at the top of Pitt ones. It takes a lot for me to really enjoy a bubble tea, and while Pitt doesn't have the best selection, for me to put this on a level with the excellent teas at I Tea Cafe really shows how highly I regard it. I'm obsessed with bubble teas, and Sumi's has one of the best, if not the best, I've had in Pennslvania. So if you love bubble teas, give these a try. And if they sold footwear, they'd be Shoe-me Bakery. If they were a cow-milking farm, they'd be Moo-me Bakery. If they were a public restroom, they'd be Loo-me Bakery (or Poo-me I suppose. Ew). If they were a plastic surgery centre, they'd be New-me Bakery. And if they were a singles/hook-up bar, they'd be Do-me Bakery. And I'd visit even more often. read more

I work by here and have been wanting to try this place forever. We tried the green tea shaved ice, which was great! My boyfriend wanted to try the green tea flavor and I'm not usually a huge matcha fan, but even though the powder is scattered all over, you can mix it in with the condensed milk and ice, which makes the flavor not as strong. That being said, the fact that I don't really like matcha powder and I still really enjoyed this dessert says a lot, right? They put a lot of condensed milk, which I LOVE, a good amount of azuki bean, green tea ice cream, and a good amount of ice. Service was fast and super friendly, they saw that we were going to sit at a table someone got up from and ran over to quickly wipe the table, which was super nice of them! The only thing is I think $10 is a lot for the shaved ice dessert, but they give a lot of it, so I would recommend splitting it with a bunch of people. Early on a Saturday, I promised my daughter we'd eat out for breakfast. Little did she know we'd be freezing our butts off at 11 in the morning eating Red Bean (Pat/Pot) Bingsu, and buying Red Bean buns. (Our first trip to find Sumi's was a disappointment because I wasn't sure where on Murray Ave., they were, and when we found Sumi's, it was closed). Being in town this weekend, we made our way to Sumi's with success! We grabbed our spoons, and worked our way into the pile of sweet red beans, two scoops of red bean ice cream, pineapple, chewy rice cake pieces, and shaved ice covered in sweetened condensed milk. The goose bumps, and shivers were so worth it. The red bean buns weren't too sweet, with the perfect ratio of sweet red beans and chewy bread like bun. Definitely yummy. The space was clean, and modern, the cake case filled with perfect round frosted cakes. The cashier was friendly, and patient, and we got to chat with the owner, when she came to ask if we liked the Bingsu!! I've gotten a strawberry cake here for my friend ($30) and multiple shaved ice dishes ($10-12) here. I'm always satisfied. The cake was light and filling, had a lot of frosting and whole strawberries in the middle layer. The bingsoo is always too large for me and my friends to finish. It's definitely a summer treat that'll cool you down real fast. It's shaved ice in a large bowl topped with ice cream, rice mochi, fruit, sometimes red bean or corn flakes. I've tried the green tea one and that one has all of the above except for fruit with green tea ice cream. The mango one only has mango as its topping. They're also covered in condensed milk as well to give the ice some flavor. I suggest coming here with an empty stomach and a serious sweet tooth. Came in to try the Bingsu (Korean shaved ice) which seems to be the ONLY place in the city that serves it. It was wonderful. The milk-ice was shaved down so finely it melted in your mouth. A great treat without being too sweet. I also tried the curry pastry. Highly highly recommend getting that pastry, it was savory but it works! Due to COVID only two people allowed inside at a time so not ideal for a big group walk but the hope is people aren't taking too many of those right now anyway. The place smelled delicious! A great variety of goodies available and the staff was super friendly. Reasonable prices as well. I got the mango bubble tea. They give an awesome sized scoop of tapioca and made the drink fresh, which I liked. Neither the tapioca or the drink were very sweet, which I know some people will love (I was not a big fan but I have the palette of a child). It also was more milk than tea, which I did enjoy. The selection was varied and nice, so we picked out 3 pastries, and also ordered a fruit shaved ice at the counter. $16 for an order of shaved ice is pretty steep and more than we are used to paying, but we figured it was because there weren't many Korean pastry shops around here. Our entire purchase came to $31. Whoa. But we looked forward to enjoying some good eats. As the gal was ringing up my purchase, she started to put on gloves and took my money with her gloved hand. Maybe gloves were to protect her hands from my germy money? (Hey, to each her own). But I realized afterwards that it was to make our shaved ice. Clearly, she wasn't trained well in terms of food safety. But I didn't complain, partly to keep my family from hearing it and losing their appetite. We found a table to sit at and it had crumbs from the previous people, so my husband wiped it down. But it wasn't just crumbs that came up on the napkins, but dirt. The white napkins he used turned black! It seems they hadn't wiped down or cleaned their tables in a long while. Gross. While we were eating, we were bombarded by gnats and fruit flies. We know that happens, but this was an inordinate number of pesky bugs, which definitely detracted from our experience. Unfortunately, the taste of the pastries didn't make up for the dirty environment. The mocha bread was not only stale, but the bread was a stale plain white loaf, and not the light, airy, buttery Korean pastry we were expecting. The soboro with cream was the best of the 3 we got. The shaved ice was not great and definitely not worth the $16. The mochi was hard/stale. The green grapes were not fresh and all the brown spots were very visible. The strawberries and mangoes were fine. Overall, pretty disappointing, given previous yelp reviews. All they had was few slices of cake (maybe the green tea flavor) and the snack items that don't need any refrigeration. That was disappointing. However, among the few items they had, I had the butter cream puff which is amazing and I got a chance to taste the mocha puff. I liked both the puffs. They are good for breakfast, snack or dessert. I'd read about the phenomenal cakes, but it was late in the afternoon and they were all gone. I went across the baskets of what looked like bread products and asked the employee what to get. I picked the blueberry and pumpkin buns and a cream filled pastry. All the pastries reminded me of a cross between cake and a very sweet bread, if that makes sense. But the cream itself in the one pastry wasn't overly sweet, which was unexpected, but I liked it. Both pastries were light, fluffy and incredibly moist.
