She also gave us suggestions for special sushi rolls that were a hit with our group. My favorite was the Gandum Roll that the chef prepared as a treat for our group. Our goal was sushi, but I enjoyed reading all of the other Asian dishes that they prepare. I saw many items that I would like to try in the future. Sumo has just opened with their soft opening. Nestled into Davie, close to the colleges, they are playing to a bit of a suburban-college market. They have some outdoor seating and a good amount of space inside. Tables for 2 and 4, but I think it'd be easy to make space for 8. Their menu is gigantic. They're really spreading their wings and I'm not always convinced that a good thing. I stuck to raw fish and sushi, but they offer Korean, Filipino, Thai and Japanese dishes. I assume their intent is to have something for everyone, but I worry what such a broad menu does to the quality and freshness of the food. We ordered the salmon belly truffle and the scallop crudo to start. The salmon has a bit of a fishy taste at the end to me, but my partner said it tasted great by his standards (I'm very particular with my raw fish). The scallops tasted very fresh and robust. The flavors of both dishes were light and refreshing, but not so good that I'd be itching to get it again. We ordered some sashimi, wahoo and hamaichi and it was SO GOOD. These tasted very fresh to me and I would order some more sashimi to try and definitely would give their nigiri a try. We then ordered 3 rolls but before we got them we were gifted a fried sushi roll with torched seafood salad on top, on the house. It was delicious, but I honestly prefer not to eat fried sushi. It's very heavy, as this was. In fact, choosing a roll from their menu that didn't have some component of fried food was difficult. The sushi came out and the flavors were pretty underwhelming. The Miami heat was really good, but I was disappointed that the raw rolls we ordered weren't as good as the Miami heat (it has tempura). The staff is WONDERFUL. Everyone was super friendly. They have a large assortment of mocktails and tea drinks, but we didn't try any because we're not huge fans of sweet syrups, which these all seemed to have in them. I also worry about their price point. I'm no stranger to the price of sushi, and they give you very large rolls, but I still didn't think the rolls were worth the price. What they lack in quality, they make up for in quantity. All-in-all, this sushi spot isn't really my jam, but I can see how it might tickle the fancy of other sushi goers. I would encourage you to try it for yourself, especially if you're into the more saucy, cooked sushi rolls, or if you have a diverse party and need different food options for multiple people. The new SUMO Asian Kitchen in Davie, 2875 S. University Drive, next to the Falcon Pub. You would be correct if you think the menu looks a lot like KUBO in Coral Springs and Wilton Manors. For all practical purposes, the food is precisely the same (95 percent?) with a few minor changes to the ramen section (they have Kao Soi and Green Curry ramen added) and a few different appetizers (Japanese french fries are addictive) and entrees (the volcano shrimp is fabulous). The main difference? No alcohol. They aren't allowed to serve it for reasons that elude me. So they've got a mocktail and boba tea menu instead. They've recruited one of the sushi chefs from TAKO in Sunny Isles Beach; the fish prep is beautiful and high-quality, which is to be expected of this Thai-Filipino family that runs quality Asian restaurants and if I lived in Davie, I would hit this place all the time. We had an excellent salmon with pear appetizer and a madai nigiri sampling that was sent out. I'd absolutely order the rolls here; they are the same excellent rolls I get at KUBO. But they will also do chef tastings and big boats and all that as well. It's a smaller, quieter, more family-friendly Kubo. Whats not to like? read more

Everything I tried was amazing, especially the tuna tartare. It was something I've never had before, and I wish I could have 10 of them. The refreshing mango with the rich taste of fish and the airiness of the taro chips was to die for. The Thai donuts were freshly made, being warm, doughy, fluffy, and sweet. We have now come here 3 times and every single time it has gotten better. The pad Thai noodles were al dente Iykyk! The shrimp tempura inside the roll was fried fresh every time we have come. Anything bulgogi is amazing here. As someone who loves to cook going out to eat is challenging as I am a tough critic but I recommend this place. The restaurant is this adorable little modern Asian spot with pretty pictures of Asian food and neon lights of pikachu and anime. The servers are quick and nice. We were about to over order and the server said we should have enough food and he was right. We had the spring roll - very freshly brought out and crispy, sauce was flavorful. The fresh roll tasted authentic and as its name - fresh. We tried the beef buglogi ramen, the meat was so soft and delicious, as was the broth. Tried the rainbow, orange dragon roll - delicious! Started with spring rolls and Edamame. Both were very good. We then had the Korean Bulgogi Baobun and the Chicken Tempura Baobun. Both were excellent. For our meals we had the Korean Bulgogi Don which was amazing! The meat was so tender and the flavor was delicious. Brought out on steaming hot plates. It seems like there are a lot of Asian Fusion restaurants popping up in Southwest Broward, and I'm here for it. Sumo Asian Kitchen is a standout in this category based on my first visit. There is a very fun comic book/anime theme to the decor and menus and a fun casual vibe that's perfect for a restaurant in close proximity to NSU. The menu is predominantly Japanese with sushi, donburi and ramen, but there are some elements of Korean, Thai and even Filipino (Sisig bao buns!) cuisines as well. We went tapas style and ordered the bulgogi beef bao buns, crispy volcano and Tom kha soup along with a few sushi rolls. Everything hit. The bao buns come with two to an order and were generously filled with umami laden beef. Nice ratio of protein to bun without a lot of filler toppings. I just wish there were three of them! The crispy volcano was also really nice, bite sized pieces of crispy rice topped with seafood dynamite that normally comes on a volcano roll - simple but delicious. The Tom Kha was also surprisingly good for a restaurant that doesn't focus on Thai cuisine - a little more creamy and coconutty than is typical but in a good way. If you like it really spicy though, you might want to request extra heat. The sushi was all very fresh and portions were generous. Standouts for us were the black dragon and green dragon rolls but there were a lot of other options on the menu that I want to try when we go back. I also look forward to trying the Ramen. TLDR: go go go! You won't regret it- and get the Kao Soi ramen! ~ This restaurant is fairly new if I'm not mistaken, so we went in with that expectation. Upon entering we were greeted immediately with friendly smiles and offered to sit at whichever table we wanted. The menu is extensive in my opinion! They are an Asian Fusion restaurant but they take it to the next level as some of the things I saw on the menu were Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, and Korean among others I'm sure. We started with the Thai dumplings and Tom Kha soup. I have a tendency to be hesitant about Tom Kha soup as I don't think many places make it very well, but this was my first time so I had to try it! It was fantastic! The broth was creamy with the perfect balance of sour and lemongrass flavors and the chicken was cooked perfectly! The only thing was they used a different type of mushroom than I'm used to in Tom Kha but that wasn't a big deal, it worked fine. The Thai dumplings were great! Super flavorful and full of meat wrapped in a thin but well steamed dumpling wrappper, I will definitely be getting these again when I come back. Then we ordered the special Sisig bao buns which are a mix of pork belly and pig ears. I had to try these because I've never had pig ears before and was curious. The flavors were amazing, but the pig ear texture is isn't for me personally. My boyfriend was thinking of ordering the Sisig Teppan so we are glad we tried these bao bun first. Definitely worth a shot if you've never had it but just not our thing. Then our main courses came. My boyfriend got the lunch special bento where you pick a main meal, sushi roll, side, and a soup or salad, and a drink for $19.99. It was a decent amount of food for the price. He got the Kimchi Belly Bowl, a kani roll, gyoza, and miso soup. The rice bowl was super flavorful and the kimchi had a good sourness to it without being too spicy which was nice! The kani roll and gyoza were okay, nothing special but not bad. The miso soup was okay as well but arrived cold. The lunch special also comes with a drink but you are able to upgrade to a milk tea for about $3 more which is sooooo worth it! We opted for the chocolate malt flavor because it's not one that we see very often. It was super good and their boba is fresh! My boyfriend usually doesn't get boba in his milk teas because he doesn't like it very much but he enjoyed the boba here. It was still slightly warm and they cook it in the brown sugar so it has a perfectly chewy texture. Then the star of the show was definitely the Kao Soi ramen with beef! It was FANTASTIC! My boyfriend is an Asian food snob and we've been driving down to Miami to go to an authentic Thai restaurant to get Khao Soi because it's one of those foods I crave and there's not many Thai places that make it, especially well. Because this place was an Asian fusion spot, I wasn't sure how well this was gonna turn out but let me just say I was blown away! It's obviously not traditional khao soi because it's made with ramen noodles and an egg. But that means nothing because the broth and flavors were out of this world! Very creamy curry flavor, slightly sour, full of all the traditional khao soi toppings such as crunchy noodles, red onion, cilantro, and lime. I am so happy to have found this dish and would come back here for this alone! I can't recommend it enough, I truly enjoyed it and will be craving it in the coming weeks. My girlfriend and I decided to check out Sumo Asian Kitchen after seeing some cool posts about their new opening on Instagram. We started with the bulgogi bao buns they were fantastic. There was a lot of meat in each of the two buns while also being flavorful and juicy. For our main dishes, we went with the chicken and pork Japanese curries. Both curries were outstanding. The chicken and pork were tender and juicy while having the perfect crispy exterior. The curry had this incredible flavor with a perfect balance of spice. Just spicy enough to taste it, but not enough to overtake any of the other flavors in the curry. The place itself was also really cool. The walls were covered with various art and the tables, plates, and silverware were high quality. The server, owner, and sushi chef were all super friendly and attentive. This is my go to place for sushi!! I come here all the time and its consistently good. My favorite rolls are the salmon or tuna lover roll, spicy kani, and spicy salmon.
