Went here for a family's college graduation dinner and the food (especially the sides) was great. However...... the only thing that wasn't so great is the customer service. We were all excited to drink some alcohol and our graduate really wanted to come to this place to celebrate and have dinner. Most of our party gave the server a US state ID and a couple of us gave a CNMI (a US territory) ID (one of us accidentally gave an expired CNMI ID, but they had a state ID with them if they needed to provide a valid one). Not that we were nervous or thought anything of it because a CNMI ID should be a valid form of ID in the US. The server took a moment to look at our IDs and ran back to "scan" them. Now, we are all Filipino + 1 Chinese and some of us do look very young, but we were all over 21. As we ate and waited, the server came back and without an explanation, said "sorry, no alcohol for you tonight." We were all confused, shocked and it rubbed us all off in the wrong way because they hastily left without even giving us a reason as to why we were denied our right to drink. We asked another server about it and they called over the manager and the original server. Thinking the manager would give an explanation, they simply repeated the same words as the server. We had to get them to spill out the reason by asking them "but... why?" Aaand they said something along the lines that our IDs don't look real or that the fonts look weird. We tried to tell them that they were real, but they flat out pushed their refusal harshly. We decided to not pursue it any longer to not ruin the night. I get it, yeah... they have a right to refuse to serve alcohol. But based on everyone's reactions, this was a first for almost if not all of us to be unjustifiably refused. It just came off as ignorant and racist of the management. We went to a bar after and they accepted all our IDs! Not all the servers are bad. There was a really nice guy with big earrings and black long hair who made our table laugh so hard. So thanks, beautiful guy server!

Heard about this place through the grapevine from friends claiming higher quality sushi and buffet options. We dined with a group of 10 and were surprised to see a converted Shari's layout become the new home of Sumo Sushi and Grill AYCE. Service was excellent, young staff were attentive and explained the (2) tier options for a basic menu and gold menu which were all made to order. the section of ready made buffet options was limited to fried rice, fried chicken wings and drumsticks, cheesey mussels, seafood boil with crawfish, satay chicken skewers, not quite an abundance that stands above places like SuperKing or hiyaku buffet but enough quality to generate some appetite. the wing we were seated in was burning hot like an oven. yes the summer is here but what restaurant doesn't have adequate AC? The vents were on as I saw ceiling decor swaying back and forth but it was too human and sun kept blasting through the blinds. Ordering was simple, just scan the activated QR code - we opted to get the Gold Menu because most of the sushi items were gold. The little robot came out with a dozen trips. The timing is a bit slow and I think the app didn't let us order more as we quickly gobbled up the few pieces of teppanyaki shrimp and sashimi orders. Both were delicious. By the end of the night almost 9pm, some items still had not arrived and kitchen staff began bringing items to our tables: udon, sushi handrolls etc.. Some winners tonight include the fried oysters (juicy and crispy panko), teppanyaki shrimp (nice buttery and plump) the sukiyaki beef (fired at your table and takes about 10-15minutes to fully cook) sushi and sashimi (great for buffet quality, still an overuse of the trifecta unagi, sweet soy and mayo sauces) but decent. Some other buffets have horrible sushi or just use fake crab and cucumbers in 20 different rolls. at Sumo, there is sashimi and delicious sushi that could compare to a medicore sushi restaurant offering. decent, not the best but good enough. Fried calamari was good, katsu curry was ok, the gyudon beef was ok but no sauce on the meat or rice. most of the soup and rice bowl items have a sliced hard boil egg which is ok but probably a shortcut leftover available from all the ramen prep. Bad items include: ribeye shortribs in pepper sauce, no flavor and there was indeed pepper water sauce on it, the meat was cooked to a shoe leather consistency. I mean why no korean kalbi marinade? The grilled squid looked good but the beak was still in and not removed. The shrimp udon tempera was just soy broth, very salty and nothing balanced or resembling japanese food like the sukiyaki dish which was much better. chicken karaage had no flavor or seasoning. didn't try the ramen at all. didn't try the salads but heard the cucumber was good. Desserts were standard, chocolate mousse in a cup, little cream fruit cakes, popsicles and ice cream sandos in the center freezer. no soft serve. there is a cantaloupe jello budnt shaped thing that was good and a coconut pudding that was good. The (3) drinks at the food bar: pad thai, mango and fruit punch were ok, just overly sweet. did not try any of the speciality sweet drinks on the menu, just ordered sodas. The service staff kept checking in which was nice and were helpful in blocking out the sun on our faces that was like a magnifying glass burning an ant. besides the lack of air condition the Sumo Sushi and Grill is great to try. Not sure if I'll be back, just too long of a wait to order off a gold menu that didn't blow our minds. at $36 a pop and about $300+ total with some gratuity included this is a pricey buffet. There are no crab legs, frog legs, oysters, stir fry dishes, noodles at the food bar just a few items that will leave you questioning why there's a basic menu and gold menu. controlling food costs sure, but please turn on the air condition and fill out the main dishes to capacity.

I had seen a lot of negative reviews and I know that people have tried to come but be turned away by big crowds. We came first thing Sunday. I really like the sushi rice. It's well seasoned but not too much. It's also not too thick and heavy so going HAM is doable. My only issue with the sushi was some key ingredients were missing. Inari, creamy scallop and krab salad were a couple I would loved to have had. I like the rolls. I felt they had lots of options for everyone. I really didn't care for the spicy crab but that might have just been me because the rest of the party loved it. Some of the hot items are kind of lame. The pork and egg on the ramen were way overcooked. But that's the great part about ayce. Try it and move on. My wife loved the Tuna tataki. Perfect bite in her opinion. I loved the fun drink fountain. I really can't think of a restaurant that served kool aid. Can we normalize this. Good diverse desserts. The mochi is disgusting. Don't bother. I liked the little strawberry mousse and custard. Very reasonable too and great service. It says not to tip be we did anyway. I'd love to return. I can see how if it was crowded how service could get mucked up. We lost an order of 7 items but honestly if it came I wouldn't have finished. Fortunately it wasn't too crowded first thing Sunday.

Really good buffet! Half the buffet is out and you can order sushi, apps, noodles, and sides through a GR code on the table and a little robot brings it to your table. The Thai tea was really good and the food was was yummy.

No one replenished cucumber the entire time.

We paid for the most expensive Gold dinner menu and I still left hungry. I absolutely did not get my $40+ worth, and the experience was nowhere near deserving of the mandatory 12% gratuity. The service was disorganized, the kitchen was clearly overwhelmed, and this place seriously needs to figure out what it's doing. We couldn't make reservations online (the one on Google doesn't work) and did it in person at a kiosk. We waited 40+ minutes for a table for two on a Sunday afternoon. We got a text and a follow-up call when our turn was up. We were seated right next to the kitchen back door and the dirty dish bus cart. From the moment we sat down, we were bombarded with ear-piercing kitchen noise and nonstop clanking as staff threw dirty dishes onto the cart. The kitchen noise eventually stopped, but the dish clanking never did. It made my head hurt. The AYCE bar is tiny. Hot food and condiments were decent, and I appreciated being able to grab sauces and wasabi myself. Desserts and free drinks were forgettable, and the pickled cucumber was never refilled the entire time. We ordered the maximum allowed for our first round. While waiting, we overheard another table complaining that their grilled items never arrived. Sure enough, ours didn't either. Two of the missing items were Gold-only grilled dishes. I asked our waitress and was told to wait another 5-10 minutes. The items never came. I asked again and was told the kitchen was a "mess" and that I needed to re-order everything. I did. Still nothing. A staff member with his hair tied up said he'd check on it, then walked past our table repeatedly without ever following up. Eventually, a Chinese staff member noticed our empty table and asked what we were still waiting for. Even then, nothing happened. After another 5-10 minutes of nothing, I gave up and re-ordered the same gold grilled items for the third time, even leaving a note saying this was the third time ordering the same items that never arrived. The food finally came out after the Chinese lady stepped in, and after all that waiting, the grilled items were a complete letdown. I ordered the butter garlic grilled squid, but it came out covered in black pepper sauce instead. As for the two Gold grilled items we paid $40+ per person for, the grilled short ribs and New York steak, were both awful. A friend who visited recently spoke highly of their New York steak, but whoever cooked mine that day was clearly incompetent. I ordered it medium, and it came out overcooked. Worse, it's basic knowledge to cut beef against the grain, yet they cut it along the grain, making it extremely chewy and inedible. We waited nearly an hour (technically the entire 90 mins) to get our gold grilled items: 3 pieces of short ribs and 4 tiny pieces of New York steak. I was still hungry and wanted to order more, but had to wait out the 15-minute cooldown. By the time it ended, our 90-minute limit was up, so we couldn't order anymore. Between the endless delays, zero communication, wrong dishes, and embarrassingly poor execution, this was an absolute failure of a "Gold" dinner. I finally gave up, paid, and walked out. The sushi menu was not bad. The salmon sashimi was thick-cut (6 pieces per order), but the quality was not good. If you only plan on eating sashimi, the gold dinner menu might be worth considering. But for the grilled items? Absolutely not. This place has the potential to be a 5-star restaurant, but not until the kitchen and service actually get their act together and figure out what they're doing.

Surprisingly the fish quality and the meat quality was pretty good for the price! What a gem in Oregon city! The decor was modern and clean and the staff was attentive. Great selection on sushi and Japanese cuisine!

    Braised beef , delicious

Crowded (we waited over an hour), they were out of 1/2 the items on the menu, overpriced. Lunch/dinner for 5 yesterday. Long wait with insufficient space for the crowds - we waited in the car. The decor hasn't changed much since this was a Shari's. Tables are small making it difficult to deal with empty plates. Ordering is done through your phone, and they throttle orders to no more than 15 items every 15 minutes. Some of our orders came quickly, others took forever - my deep fried oyster appetizer came just as we were getting ready to leave. It tasted horrible - they used old oil and the breading was inedible. They have a nice buffet to give you something to start with - the salt and pepper shrimp at the buffet is the best thing on the menu, its really very good. The sushi was OK, just OK. It's a step above most Chinese AYCE sushi places, but if you are accustomed to good sushi you'll be disappointed. Example: my salmon skin hand roll (see photo) was a mess. The nigiri's and raw rolls were pretty good. Your orders are sometimes delivered via robot, sometimes by someone from the kitchen. The servers/bussers did a reasonable job of clearing empty plates, though some stacking prior to their arrival was required. Our bill was about $200 for 5 people including one child, as we had the Gold level. The Gold level was kind of a rip-off as they were out of salmon half the time, so maybe the Silver level would be a better buy. IMHO you will spend about about the same for excellent sushi from a good restaurant. It'll be interesting to see how this place does in the long run, whether the crowds continue. I know we will not be back.

Exceeded expectations for a $36.99 AYCE. The fish quality for the sashimi is top-tier for this price point. I was blown away by the variety of sides, including the noodles, fried dishes, and sweets. Even we order through the website, the staff is still attentive and welcoming. And the mobile ordering makes the process very smooth. Beautiful atmosphere! Worth the price!

We came to Sumo after seeing it on social media and for a Asian buffet / AYCE, it did not disappoint. In comparison to other Asian buffets, Sumo is on the higher end and better quality than other Chinese buffets in the area. Comparable to Makoto in Vancouver, but offers a made to order experience. They have a small selection of shabu shabu, rice bowls, good selection of sushi rolls, appetizers, hand rolls, and one buffet line. In the buffet line was fried rice, seafood broil, chicken wings, and a small selection of fruits and desserts. Bonus was free Thai tea and mango juice. Sushi quality is a step above your average Chinese buffet sushi, but a step down from a regular sushi restaurant. I will be back when I have Asian buffet cravings.

I came here for lunch with family and we were impressed based on the quality of food for an Asian buffet. We got the lunch gold menu, but were told that their dinner menu is also available during lunch. There is a hot bar where there is a decent variety of food you can get at any time, then you can use their QR code to order sushi and additional food as well. The food comes pretty quickly but made to order. We got a variety of sushi's and appetizers. They even have gyudon, currydons, ramen, and hot pot too. Everything was really good. I wouldn't say super amazing but for the price and the quality, it's well worth it. The service was phenomenal as well.

Simone Sushi & Grill had a lot of food. We reserved a table for 10 but got a table for 6. Not a big deal. It was busy. The ordering process was a little confusing at first. You have to snap the QR code to order. Once you choose, the orders arrive pretty fast. There's a buffet filled with food, desserts, drinks. It was pretty good. Sushi was fresh and tasty. Just be very hungry because there's a lot of choices with portions that are substantial. Topped off the meal with a coconut pudding and some candy. Would I come again? Maybe. It was just kinda overwhelming with wanting to try so much, but you can only eat only so much.

Came during their soft opening! So excited to have an AYCE place in Oregon City! They don't have their premium section up yet but the rest is all mostly available. The service was great, everyone was very friendly and walked us through ordering via the QR code, which was super easy. The drinks that were part of the buffet bar were good too! We did the dinner gold option, which included sashimi and nigiri. Dinner is served all day on weekends. We were able to try most of the fish options and they were super delicious. Loved the aburi white tuna and the sweet shrimp. The one thing we didn't love was that the squid still had the cartilage in it, wouldn't order that again. Would also love to see scallop on the sashimi section! We didn't get much from the buffet bar, except a couple desserts, but the baked mussels were tasty! Next time I'd love to try the wasabi octopus, saba, fried scallop, and fried calamari, which they were out of today. Of the cooked items, the New York steak was okay, same with the chicken karaage, but the short rib was quite good! Fried oysters and the grilled shrimp were yummy too! We ordered two of the grilled shrimp with garlic butter sauce. Watching the robots bring food back and forth was a fun experience too. Overall the experience was great and I can't wait to come back, especially to try the uni in the premium section! I would likely do the gold option when I come because having the option of nigiri and sashimi is awesome. If I came during lunch, I'd definitely try one of the shabu shabus.

Last time customer @ Kento in Lebanon, OR…read more I was looking forward to my meal yesterday afternoon at this restaurant. Unfortunately, I ended up being very, very disappointed. I arrived a little before 5pm and the place was empty. Alyssa greeted me and she was amazing, very friendly and enthusiastic. I was ecstatic by her customer service skills and even told her how wonderful she was on the phone to each and every customer. Not only that, but I would give her a shout out on my Yelp review, I was planning to write. Between call-in orders, she kept busy preparing and cleaning, the restaurant itself was very presentable and orderly. Alyssa kept telling everyone their order should be ready in about 15-20 minutes, (I clearly heard her confirm this time with the kitchen) so I assumed that my one single order of a California summer roll (this should be taken off the menu, it's just bad) and sukiyaki chicken would be served to me in that amount of time as well. 45 minutes later she said it would be coming out soon and I politely opted for them to bag it up so I could leave. Alyssa continued to be an outstanding employee, apologized, and multi-tasked between taking orders, communicating with the kitchen staff, and checking out customers for to-go orders. Another employee hand delivered my order, and genuinely apologized for my wait. Even after waiting longer than expected, I felt good enough with my experience that I tipped $10 on a $20 bill because of their sincerity and I continue to stand by my tip. What I don't appreciate is what I actually got, which is a whole lot of onion, instead of chicken and veggies. Chef Rick would be disappointed, as he has clearly posted great pictures with a good amount of protein and veggies. I respect what he's trying to do to promote his business. I believe he is very hard working and I value his approach to partner up with other local businesses in the food industry as well. Unfortunately, my experience last night, along with a few other times, will have me going elsewhere from now on, when I am in town. There's actually some delicious, and consistent competition within walking distance. Lots of potential. Good luck.
