This family style, traditional cooking! I'm glad to have experience this! As there are too many of those modern take with higher pricing. It's crazy how these days when the newer restaurants cooks pretty much the same or similar level of food but upcharge you 2-3x more than it should be. Thankfully this place is not the case! If you want something authentic and real this would be the spot! Back in the days we would have these kinds of restaurants in every corner. Now it's becoming scarce. I'm glad that this is one of the ones that survived! I would say everything was pretty top notch. Probably the only dish that wasn't so great was their fried rice. Went with my family for dinner on a Saturday around 5pm. It wasn't crowded and we were able to be seated right away. They were very attentive of us and everything came out fast. This is a solid Cantonese spot! After one meal here, it's going on my rotation of Cantonese restaurants in Chinatown. The crispy garlic chicken was tender and flavorful with crispy skin. The Singapore chow mei fun came in a heaping portion with tasty roast pork and shrimp, and the dry-fried string beans were delicious and not too dry. The price is right, too, at about $13-$16 per dish. The waiter kept the tea coming and decor is pretty typical. We requested one duck to be cut and one not cut for display since we are eating duck instead of Turkey for our Friendsgiving party. I would come here again! They have an all-day lunch special for about $9 - 12 per dish. I got the braised tofu with fish fillet in brown sauce lunch special which came with a small bowl of rice and free Puer tea. It was delicious. Deep fried soft tofu braised with freshly fried fish - you could still feel some crunch! Was very tasty and a decent amount of food for $10; just enough to feel full without any leftovers. After seeing that the restaurant was cheaper than the other Cantonese restaurants nearby, I decided to come here to get some congee. When I entered, it was quite busy for the early evening, where there were several parties inside. There were Cantopop music videos playing. I ordered a sampan congee and mixed offal congee. While waiting, the waiters were cutting stalks of greens. There is a kitchen in the basement where the restaurant uses lifts to bring food to the dining room. I saw another waiter washing and cutting a watermelon for dessert. The congee took a few minutes to make, which was done by the entrance. The entrance also does Cantonese BBQ items. The sampan congee had pieces of char siu roast pork and pickled mustard greens, which goes well with the mild-flavored congee. The mixed offal congee had pork liver that left a strong iron taste. Through different name changes, from Fu Wong to Feng Cheng Yuan and now New Hong Wong, this has been a staple in the neighborhood and convenient on the Bowery. I pick up a lot of takeout to and from the subway and see a lot of people coming from the Boston/DC Chinatown buses come through. What's better than a roast pork or duck over rice on a bus road trip? Other people will be chewing on their Under Armor bags! Wonton noodle soup, congee, chow fun & noodles are great choices for a filling lunch, eat-in or to go. More recently, we've had big Cantonese banquet type dinners here as well. The big round tables can easily accommodate large groups, 10 per table x 9-10 tables. This year so far we've had my nephew's graduation dinner and my dragon boat team had our annual end of season dinner here. The chefs do banquet meals right. Usually consisting of up to 10 courses of seafood, chicken, steak, lobster, shrimp and whole fish, no one leaves hungry, but you'll most likely have tons of leftovers. We make sure to finish the whole fish which for us is the pan-fried flounder, my favorite. So please be aware, this is a Cantonese restaurant that would be more for a local place, their English isn't great and the service may not be up to par compared to "normal" restaurants but that aside, the food is very good for both the quality and price. Mushroom E Noodles - this is a classic at the end of every single Cantonese wedding and it is as expected, delicious and filling and always hits the spot. Steam Carp - GIANT peice of fish, if you liked steamed fish - this is definitely something that you want to try out. It does have bones so becareful when eating, but luckily with carp these fish bones are giant and only a few small ones, so first timers won't have a problem with this. Walnut Shrimp - its fried and tossed in what I think is kewpie mayo whch makes it crunchy and sweet so its so delicious, laid on top of a bed of perfectly steamed brocolli and candied walnuts dressed all over the plate. This is another classic that is just phenomenal, I do wish there was more fried shrimp but overall the dish was great. Half of a fried chicken - as expected, good dish, came with the shrimp chips on top and fried garlic garnished all over the chicken. This was good and typical for a chicken dish - would recommend.
