Food is great overall and is a no frills type of place. The whole experience is more on the 3.5/5 since I found some dishes were a miss. The Shanghai dumplings- terrible and it was the most expensive thing we ordered. The skin was thick and dry with little to no juice inside of the dumpling. The other dishes were good but it isn't super intuitive to order and get seated. It was a bit difficult to get someone to seat us and to get us started on our meal. This has been my go to Chinese restaurant ever since I was little. The quality has definitely stayed consistent and if not it has been progressively improving. Very fast service and quality food! This is my first time trying fried flounder because it was a special occasion. It is definitely a delicacy food and it was super delicious! They cut up the belly and steamed in so the meat is smooth and silky, and they topped with Chinese brocolli in white garlic sauce. With the rest of the fish they fried it so you get a nice contrast of silky fish meat and fried fish skin. Overall, this is the best Chinese restaurant in Malden. Ambience/Decor/Service: i put this first because of the few issues. 1) no one at the front to collect names as all the Asian aunties/uncles cut each other to be "first" 2) no designated waiter/waitress so when we put an extra order in it got lost in all the translation 3) the design of the place maximizes large tables/ groups (8+) and leaves the rest of the 4 and below groups like ourselves waiting incredibly long. We went for dim sum on a Sunday. You have to go in and check in with the "hostess" and she will give you a ticket with a number on it. We didn't wait very long at all. We came Saturday at 12:30 pm for dimsum as a group of 5 and were surprised to be seated immediately. Service was a bit brusque, but efficient. They gave us the a sheet menu to mark down our order and a picture menu version with a subset. The sheet menu v classic carts provides the trade off of having your desired dishes freshly prepared (great for dumplings) v being able to pick and choose your dishes throughout the meal. We had the shrimp dumplings, shumai, egg yolk buns, vegetable rice rolls, fried dough rice rolls, taro dumplings, soft tofu, pork dumplings, sesame balls, lotus leaf chicken and ended up ordering way too much (we left with 6+ small boxes), so I would recommend the strategy of ordering less and adding to your order later. The shumai was so soft and juicy and, in general, I liked all of the dumplings. As a reminder, dimsum is not a great place to take your vegetarian friends (from our dishes, they were only able to have the dessert items and rice rolls) and most pescatarian dishes use shrimp (for those who are allergic to shrimp). read more

I really wanted to like Sun Kong as it was a childhood favorite of a friend we were visiting in Malden, but after trying a multitude of dishes they had to offer, I can safely say they are only average at best. We came during Memorial Weekend and the place was bustling, luckily the wait was not too bad and we were promptly seated after 20 minutes. Sun Kong serves dim sum in the traditional cart style which, while authentic, can cause some of the non-steamed dishes to be cold by the time they arrive at your table. This sadly was the case for most of the dishes which is one of the reasons I am docking points. In addition, most of the classic dishes were rather lacking. Their shrimp rice roll had small, anemic shrimp, very different than my current dim sum champion Golden Palace near Uncasville. To make matters worse, their filling for the har gow was undercooked, leading to a powdery mouth feel - likely a by product of a cornstarch mixture used to bind the filling. You can tell a lot about a dim sum place based off the trifecta of: shu mai, rice roll, and har gow and their takes on these dishes spoke volumes. I will give a shoutout to their stellar green durian baked roll though, everything about that was perfect and left me with a better taste in my mouth by the end of the meal! All in all, I am still glad we came here as it's always fun to go to your friend's childhood favorite spots - dim sum is also about the socialization and you can do just that here! read more

This is a pre-COVID review. Sun Kong is our favorite dim sum place! We actually think it's way better than the dim sum places in Chinatown. There are plenty of carts with fresh food, and everything is prepared really well. They are very generous with their shrimp; seriously the shrimp dumplings with snow peas are absolutely stuffed. I'm also a big fan of their desserts, especially their custard buns, which are the freshest and best-baked custard buns I've ever had! Prices are reasonable and on par with other dim sum restaurants. The only downside to this place is a lack of parking. We usually walk here, but if you drive and can't find a parking spot, you may have to park on a residential street a few blocks away. I would recommend their Shai Mai and Shrimp Dumpling because their shrimp is very fresh and tender. The pork buns were full of meat, soft, and freshly baked. For dessert, we got the Egg Tart, Tofu Pudding with Honey, and their specialty which is the famous Pineapple bun. Their Pineapple buns are to die for!
