Where does one start with such an incredible dining experience... Let's go with parking: the restaurant is located in a mall with a big parking garage, where most of the other shops close around 7:30pm, meaning parking is easy and FREE here! 3 hours free with validation! Service: incredible and constant, even when they were busy. Sam, who I believe is the owner, was SO warm and kind to every table. This is the type of restauranteur vibe that I saw a lot pre-covid, so to see it now was heartwarming. He explained to us in detail about the cuts of meat, stating how they don't use corn syrup in their galbi, but fresh Korean pears. Can one really tell the difference? YES!!!! (See food section below for my review of the galbi! Andy and Hazel were also constantly attentive to our table, making sure the meat was cooked to perfection! Food: It's so easy to have galbi be incredibly sweet to mask the meat quality sometimes, but the marinade at Mountain San BBQ was so delicious and brought out the freshness of the beef. The galbi and other delicious meats were I the "classic" for two people, and we were so full with leftovers to take home! We also ordered à la carte appetizers like potato pancakes (my fav) and garlic shrimp (SO good) and got complimentary calamari, steamed egg, and kimchi pancake, which were both so delicious! This place got me through college and grad school, so I was happy to see the owner combined San and Mountain Noodles into a new spot with a huge perk: free parking! It's 3 hours free with validation and parking is safe and so easy. The best update is that they now offer mini versions of the classics. It means you can actually order the abalone porridge or beef tartare as a side without having to skip the KBBQ. The Kalbi Short Ribs They've used the same pear/apple marinade since '74. It's naturally caramelized and not that overly sweet, syrupy mess you get at other places. Steamed Egg: Super fluffy because they use anchovy broth instead of just water. Potato Pancake: Made with sweet shrimp--definitely a unique dish. Open until midnight on weekends, which is great because it still feels like a "homestyle" meal rather than typical heavy greasy late-night food. Overall, I'd recommend this bbq place. Located in K Plaza Market, you need to park on the 4th floor to be right next to the entrance to the restaurant on the third floor. Their meat is great quality. We had the 2 people combo that was $109, and the chadol, galbi, the joomuluck were all great quality meat. We added one cold noodles, order of yukhwe, and fried rice since there were 3 of us, and the amount of food was plentiful. They give you steamed egg and a small stew as well. We enjoyed the meat, including yukhwe, but the fried rice and cold noodles were both a hard pass. Not sure how they mess up on fried rice, but it was pretty flavorless and I actually brought it home and added some more kimchi broth and sesame oil to make it tastier. The cold noodles (naengmyun) was not something I'd order again, and I love cold noodles. I'd go back for their meat though, and on the day I was there for lunch, service was very good. We had to cook the meat ourselves a bit when it got busy, but the waiter was very attentive and receptive to our requests. I've been to San BBQ (aka Mountain) a couple times now and it's pleasing, reliable and I'm sure I'll be back. It was in another location for years and opened in the Koreatown Plaza mall last year. Sometimes the music from the restaurant is blaring through the mall so if you follow the sound, you'll find yourselves at Mountain San Korean BBQ on the 3rd floor. It's a loud and poppin' KBBQ spot between the music and overhead vents with staff running around quickly. Service can sometimes be slow and you wait for awhile as it gets very busy. I haven't ever encountered a hugeeeee wait here so that has been a huge positive dining here. And they have the parking lot which is a big plus in Koreatown, too. We were the first customers when they opened for the day and we were a bit skeptical since it was getting close to lunchtime and no one else was there. We were considering going with one of their bbq combo meals but we thought it would be too much food plus we wanted to try a few dishes. We opted for marinated galbi (half order), rib eye steak (half order), abalone porridge and cold noodles. We liked that you could order half-orders for bbq as well as other a la carte items. The meal also came with an assortment of banchan + steamed egg + fried pancake + fried squid. The meal was truly delicious and a treat since I have been laying off beef for awhile. We had a really nice server who bbq'd our meat selection to perfection. Needless to say, service was good, maybe not too personal but they do a very great job. I came here for the second time this week. The first time I came here was shortly after I saw huge lines here and was wondering what it was that caused all this commotion. It's definitely a quality Korean bbq spot that probably has the best steamed egg I've ever tried (with a flavorful sesame oil flavor to it). I got the $99 beef special, which for two people, really is a lot of food. The beef belly has that flavor profile you look for when you start eating the meat, the Wagyu is lean and tender, then my favorite part was the kalbi without the marinade. What made that so special is that the grill has charcoal, so all that deep charcoal smoke coats the meat perfectly. With how they have their ventilation system set up, the smoke from the charcoal goes straight up through the grill and into the meat. Pairing that cut with the green tea salt provides a perfect combination to a flavor that you can expect from high quality meat. After, they served the marinated kalbi. I didn't recall getting fried shrimp the first time I went, but it was nice to get that crunchy texture as well to enjoy throughout the meal, along with the flavorful kimchi pancake. I really like the panchan here, especially the salad, green things and the kimchi. What makes the salad here nice is how they dress it up into the sesame oil. It gives the salad such a nice flavor that you definitely want a second serving. In addition to the smoke being focused on the meat, their ventilation system prevents your clothes or hair from smelling like smoke as well, which is a common complaint found in other Korean bbq spots that Mountain addresses well. The service here is phenomenal. They cook for you. They treat you with kindness and respect. They're attentive. And the ambiance is nice too. Mountain San BBQ recently opened up at this new location, I think it's been a few months now but a huge plus for me is the free parking. The Premium Beef combo set was well worth the price for me. It includes ribeye, marinated galbi, marbled beef, and short rib marinated with sesame oil and salt. I had dinner here yesterday with my cousin (she's from San Diego) and her bf. Really friendly staff, service was great and omg the meat quality was amazing! The beef melted in our mouths. So tender and absolutely juicy. I love how the waitress and waiters would cook the meat for us (it's great so they make sure the meat isn't over cooked) and also I don't go home with my hands smelling like grilled beef (my dog didn't judge me this time). They didn't spend much on the decor of the restaurant, but they did spend a lot on the ranges and the grills, it actually sucks up all the smoke from the grills so everyone can eat and enjoy their food without having a bunch of smoke going into their faces. Located in the Koreatown Plaza on Western Ave Celebrated a friend's birthday here. She made a reservation ahead of time so by the time we arrived, everything was set up. We had a large group so we had to split into 4 different tables but we were all next to each other so it was no biggie. We were able to get up, walk around and mingle. Mountain used to be one of my go-to spots back when they were located in the same mall as Hangari Kalguksu. They've since moved and now seem to lean more toward a Korean BBQ concept, though they still offer some of their original menu items. We ordered the kimchi jjigae (#M7)--a familiar favorite from their old menu--along with the bean paste-based soup with beef ribs (#6) and the pork katsu appetizer. Just a heads-up: their infamous jangjorim banchan only comes with dishes that start with "M" (i.e., the Mountain Cafe items). The food was fine, but the service was a bit underwhelming. Aside from when our order was taken, I had to flag someone down for water, missing banchan, and even the check. This was surprising, considering there was almost a 1:1 ratio of staff to tables when we visited. One of the things we loved most about the old location was its homey, hole-in-the-wall vibe. This new spot, while bigger and offering ample free parking and an expanded menu, seems to have lost that small business charm. I've never been more impressed with a Korean barbecue restaurant. Peng has been my long-standing favorite that menu spot, and Sean Kirby has been my number one take out spot. But this place both blows them both out of the water. Everything in the menu is intentional here. From the lack of added MSG in their side dishes, they use a fruit juice in their name and broth, and the intentionality of the slightly thicker cut of meat allows the meat to soak up the marinade more evenly. The gyeranjjim (steamed egg) is nothing to overlook, because it's not nearly as salty or inconsistent as many others restaurants. I really liked the sauces they had, especially the sweet garlic dip, apparently all made in house. They have a sweet and somewhat spicy marinade with onions and jalapeños similar to Baekjeong that is set apart by a sly hint of wasabi. Each item on the set was placed intentionally in its order. There was even thought that went into the charcoal used in the grill and the type of grill that was used for each meat. They're also trying out glass noodles that are typically found in Korean japchae in their bibimyun, which gives the dish a new element of chewiness that's lost on thinner noodles. The ambience of the spot makes it a great place for a first date, a night out with friends, or dinner with your family. They are stocked with a healthy amount of Soju and beer, so this is the perfect place for a weekend night out. But if you're driving, good news! It's located super conveniently in Koreatown Plaza, so validation gets you three hours of parking for free. This place is in the heart of Koreatown and combines, my other most frequent restaurant mount noodles with this new Korean barbecue set menu. All the menu items from Mountain Noodle are still available here but with the twist that you can enjoy them alongside a healthy heaping of Korean barbecue. So, we were going to try the large beef combo, $159, which feed 2-3 persons, but was suggested to just start with smaller combo, $99, which feeds 2 people. Obviously, they do not know I eat beef. Anyhow, the sides consists of two salads, one consisting of shredded lettuce and cabbage and second consisting of sliced onion and cilantro, both dressed in some sweet and vinegar soy dressing. Additionally, there was kimchi, pickled radish slices, some potato dish, and pickled cucumbers. There were several dipping sauces, sweet soy, garlic, and two variations of salt. The sides were bland, especially the potato dish and cucumber. The sauces were strong (sweet, vinegar, and garlicy). We received a small Korean pancake to taste and an piping hot steamed egg. These were tasty. We were asked as to choicd of rice. You can select either white steamed rice or barley rice (FYI this might be healtier than white rice but be weary as it causes gas). The meat consisted of sliced brisket, beef belly, rib meat and marinated rib. Brisket is no special, same for beef belly. Try these slightly burnt and with soy dipping sauce. The rib meat is good, hardly need to chew. This has to be cooked mid to mid well. Do not cook this well through. Try with salt or garlic dipping sauce. The marinated rib has nice sauce and taste amazing. Cook these slightly well and brown but not burnt. Goes really well with white rice. The servers are friendly, attentive and they cook the meat. No complaints. Just the minor accident where the server accidentally spilt water by knocking the water cup on the table. Luckily, the majority of water spilled to the floor, no harm done. Was provided with extra napkins. This could have been prevented if one server was dedicated to specific table. There is no dedicated server per table like American restaurants. In Korean restaurants, servers go around and serve all tables. Ambiance is okay, kinda has industrial look. The place is fairly new and clean. Park in the KTown Plaza parking. After you dine, you can browse stores and shop at the grocery store since you get three hours of free parking with validation. read more
