AJ went above and beyond to answer all our questions, helped us pick the best finishes and get us the best value for our money. If I had any pool job I would ask for AJ and Oz at Sunstate. Our experience with Sun state has been beyond amazing. Our pool was completed within 20 days, our contractor Oz was outstanding. Everything surpassed our expectations, communication, workmanship, quality, cost of remodel everything was really good. We had heard so many horror stories. Our contractor Oz worked with us at every step. He was patient and listened to us and was always open to helping us out. Sun State made us so happy and glad that we picked them. Warning: be very careful before doing business with this company. We paid in advance for pool resurfacing and additional work, but some of the services we were charged for were scheduled and then never started. After repeated no-shows and no follow-through, we canceled the unfinished work and requested a refund. What followed was months of excuses and delays. We were told over and over that the refund was being processed, and the owner, Michael Dilger, claimed a check had been mailed but we did not receive payment. We ultimately had to file a lawsuit against this company in Maricopa County Justice Court, and a judgment totaling thousands of dollars was awarded to us for the refund, plus court costs and interest. I contacted the company back on March of 2026. While the estimator was efficient the company has not been. I was promised that this work should not take more than six weeks, which honestly was perfect since the weather was not warming up until May/June. I paid the 50% deposit and received an email about the demo/next steps. The demo was delayed for four days, originally no big deal. I then received the invoice for the tiling. They did not come back out, after I paid the invoice for four weeks. Told me that the curing would take less than a week, this was on April 30th. It is not about to be June. I have made several phone calls and left voicemails. I received only ONE EMAIL back saying they are creating an invoice and once paid they will get me on the schedule for the surface. That was last week from this post date. I called again today and they never answer the phone. I stopped hearing back from the superintendent and the estimator won't even return my calls. I will be following the advice that I see from some other posts and filing a complaint with the ROC . Been trying to get this company to do a warranty fix for 9months now and they just ignore me. The cool deck surface crew were good enough to come do their part but I have 2 cracked waterline tiles and grout to be redone between the deck and pool. Beware! I paid a $40K deposit on January 17th for a pool/decking/ pergola remodel that was supposed to take 60 days. It is now May 7th... twice the specified time frame, and my pool looks like this. Just demo... Demo occured the beginning of February. Since then, many calls and text go unanswered. Little to no work has been done. Nobody at Sunstate Pools can tell me whats going on. I could go on for pages ... but ... so if you want your pool to look like this... definetly hire Sunstate pools... But if you actually want to be using your pool in the contracted timeframe... pick another company. I can't even look in my backyard I'm so dissapointed. I filed tonight with the ROC for abandoment of my job. As of today, there are 7 other pending complaints with the ROC. Update May 16th 2026: After I filed a complaint of abandoment with the ROC, they showed up to do some work. About a day and a half worth of work in over 7 days time. The really cool thing is they attempted to build my new baja step. But they used hand mixed concrete, instead of shotcrete, and they ran out mid job. So their plan is to add additional concrete to existing layers, which will result in cracking and failure in the future. Now I am faced with paying another contractor to remove what they have done wrong and redo the work. What a nightmare... stay away. When I tried to bring this to the attention of Chris Cosiano and Jake... of course there was no reply. I contracted Sun State Pools in June 2025 for a pool remodel -- new skimmer, waterfall rebuild, and pebble tec resurfacing. The job was quoted at 6-12 weeks. Nearly a year later, my pool is still sitting empty and unfinished. The work that was completed is riddled with defects: uneven travertine coping and grout lines, a waterfall tile face that protrudes past the travertine top, mismatched bullnosed travertine on the waterfall steps, a failing crack repair on the east wall, missing cantilever and fascia on the north wall, broken pop-up sleeves, broken landscaping lights, and trash and debris left on-site. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors inspected the project and issued a Written Directive covering nine separate deficiency items. Communication broke down completely. The original project superintendent stopped showing up in November 2025. A replacement contact was assigned, then he too went silent. When I finally did hear from the company, it was a pivot -- they claimed to be "under new ownership" and asked me to resubmit all my documentation. That turned out to be misdirection; the original owner remained the ROC licensee throughout. Before hiring them in June 2025, I checked the ROC's public license lookup and saw a clean record. Today they have 17 open ROC complaints and only 2 resolved -- meaning the bulk of these complaints have accumulated in under a year. I'm apparently not alone. They also carry two unresolved BBB complaints they never responded to, and a prior Maricopa County court judgment of nearly $50,000 against them. I wish I had never decided to do business with Sun State Pools. They took my money and now ghost me. After I signed the contract and paid the deposit, Sun State Pools did not show up for the work to begin. I submitted written cancellation prior to any work being done, and my deposit has not been returned. Sun State Pools is not responding to any form of communications that have been made in the effort to resolve this matter. They have locked the door to their business and added signage "By Appointment Only" on the front door, Sun State will not set up an appointment. read more

But once you sign and send the deposit, you will never get a call back again. No return calls, nothing. Was assigned 4 different project managers over 4 months. Juan, Matt, Brandon, Tyler. At first they show up randomly without any heads up, do part of a job but never finish anything. Juan even quit in the middle of doing work, waited till I wasn't looking, jumped in his truck and pealed out when I tried to flag him down. Then they would just disappear for weeks again. Dodge your calls. I made multiple drives down to their office just to find the door locked and see someone hiding in the back area who wouldn't come forward. Bella office manager would dodge my calls. When I could get the new owner Jacob to answer the phone, he would promise everything. Biggest lie was he would always promise to find an answer or schedule something himself and then call me back. NEVER EVER CALLED ME BACK. After 4 months and so much stress I was getting an ulcer, I finally had to fire them. Which was an ordeal since I could never get ahold of anyone. Finally found a day, parked across the way till I saw someone walk out and leave without locking the door and then I just went in. Handed BELLA the termination for breach letter and was done. If anyone wants to hear some troubling reality from this company, reach out. I video taped my whole conversation with her where she admitted they had no control over the crews or what was being done. She admitted the company was in trouble and could not complete jobs. She admitted they couldn't schedule subcontractors or control when any work was being done. Our experience with Sun State Pools was extremely frustrating from start to finish. What was originally estimated as a reasonable project timeline ended up taking 10 months longer than promised, with constant delays and little accountability. Over the course of the project we were assigned three different project managers, which made communication and continuity nearly impossible. Every time someone new stepped in, it felt like the project had to start over. Communication was another major issue. Calls and messages often went unanswered for long periods, and we frequently had to follow up multiple times just to get basic updates. When we did get responses, they were often vague or didn't address the questions we had asked. Coordination with subcontractors was also clearly lacking. Different crews would show up without knowing what had been completed previously, work would stall while waiting on other trades, and scheduling seemed completely disorganized. It often felt like no one was actually overseeing the process or ensuring that the different pieces of the project were working together. Overall, the experience was disappointing and far more stressful than it should have been. Based on our experience with the delays, turnover in project management, lack of communication, and poor coordination, we would not recommend Sun State Pools. read more

Bella, you call this a fix? The HydroPure was disassembled by the the people you sent for warranty work. Im pretty sure thats how you know it needs to be replaced. I have no intention to personal fixing sun state problems and warranty. Please see your teams fix to run my pool, unacceptable! Please replace ozone unit ASAP! As for the lights in pool, Sun State now owes me the deferents between 10.00 light switch and color logic controler listed in my contract. This all started April of 2025 when we signed a contract to build a pool and backyard with Mike at Sun State Pools. Paid them over $180K and now 13 months later and 7 month past due we still have no pool or backyard completed. After it stalled for 5 months I had to go down there and sit in their lobby to get someone to talk with me. Mike was telling me he is not the owner and introduced me to Jake who said they did not have any records now and would need me to bring them in to see where this project was. I had all the paperwork along with all the cashed checks for him to see and then he told me since he took over he was trying to get this going in the right direction by booking new jobs so he could help pay for the old jobs. This made me feel worse about this deal as I then figured out what had happened to all my money. Jake sent Juan out to fix the tile that was all coming up and they took a sledge hammer to all the tile and piled it up next to the hole in my backyard. This sat for 2 more weeks and then Jake showed up at 7pm on a Sunday and picked 75% of it up to haul away. At that time he told me he had fired Juan and would have a new crew come out but asked if I would pay for the tile from the tile company. I explained to Jake that I was not paying another dime until this project was completed and the city permit was signed off on. My wife then went down to the office and they would not answer the door so she went around back and Mike's truck was out back as he was inside but would not show his face. I showed up and Juan was getting a saw out of the backdoor so my wife and I asked to talk to someone. The receptionist said they were in Idaho and I asked her to call them and find out what was going on with our project. She went and called them and she told us Jake would have a new crew out there on Wednesday May 13th. Here it is May 13th and no crew, Jake will not answer or Mike and I am contacting the ROC to file a complaint about how this is going. I would tell you to run as far away from Sun State Pools LLC from my experience. I figure to finish my pool and backyard is going to cost me about $60k more and it hurts that a company like this can just keep screwing new clients as well as the ones that already paid them. Like I said, I would run and find a company that if a legit business that will do the job and finish it 100% not just take money to go on trips and buy personal items and suck all the profit out of the business so they cannot pay the contractors or the material companies. It is sad that Mike and his Mother have let this company they built go this way and then this new guy Jake is just telling you anything to keep you strung along. We signed a contract with Sun State Pools Sept. 21, 2024 and work commenced JuIy 1, 2025 as agreed. The contract states the work is to be completed within 90 days. I have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and being treated by Mayo clinic. The pool is supposed to be used for my physical recovery and therapy and was assured by Sun State Pools that the pool would be on time in Sept. We made payments in accordance with the contract and made the last major payment on Aug. 27th, 2025 when we reached the 85% holdback threshold and were told it was to pay for the labor and materials to complete the pool. Almost immediately, we started to experience significant delays in work progress and little to no communication. We repeatedly asked to talk to the owner, Mike Dilger, and finally had a conversation with him on Sept 12th, and he assured us he was aware of the issues and would take care of them. Nothing changed. We have tried repeatedly to work with the company for months and find out what is causing the delays. In the couple of conversations we have had with company representatives, they tell us "we are at the top of their list" and then nothing changes. Workers come out for a few hours and then days/weeks go by with no work progress. There is little to no communication for weeks and we have no idea when our pool will be completed. We have been very patient and feel the company gave us no choice, so we filed a complaint with the ROC on 12/5/25 but were told the complaint was dismissed since workers did show up (once) and did not meet the 60 day threshold of abandonment. On 12/19/25 we have filed a second ROC complaint. On 12/19/25, we also filed a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General's office and also filed a complaint with BBB on 12/21/25. There has been no work done for the past two weeks and we wonder if the company is angry that we filed the ROC complaint and is retaliating against us. SunState did my pool remodel a few years ago and I posted a very favorable review because they did an awesome job -HOWEVER- I have been trying since June of last year to get some warranty work and all I am getting is lip service- every few months they send someone out to look at the work and promise to follow through which they have not. I have asked to speak to the owner which I was told my request was passed on. I got no response so I called again and was told the general manager would be calling me back- still no response. In the meantime my issue is getting worse and I am at a loss. I can say I am extremely disappointed. They have become very good at excuses and less focused on fixing their issues. read more

We signed a contract last August requesting project to start in January. 2 months in only pebbletec chipped out, new light installed, without controller, and water line tile placed but ends where it shouldn't. I am only giving them two starts because our pool is finally finished, but the pain it took to get here I am not sure was worth it. Their communication is horrible. They turn over staff all the time with no notice, so you could be waiting for a response or for an appointment that never comes because your assigned contractor has quit. Every appointment is rescheduled 3-4 times, when they do show up they only do have the job so you have to bet them to come back. I have called 12 times now and all I am waiting on is for them to deliver the pool vacuum and no one will call me back. Don't be fooled by their pricing, unless you want to fully manage the process by yourself and constantly be battling to get your project prioritized. Can't believe this place is still in business. Had to select a rating of one star as a minimum. No stars for this company. We are now in day 145 of a job that should have been a maximum of 14 days. Still not complete. Seems confusion and chaos reign within this company. Sun State sub-contracts out all the work. "Project Manager", if we can refer to them as such, hasn't observed any work, never on site, difficult to communicate with even before the project started. Sub-contractors show up whenever, no call, no notification, and once on site simply walk into the backyard without even a simple knock on the door notifying the homeowner of their presence. Now, how safe is that? Bella makes promises with no follow through, virtually no return phone calls, little interaction via text or email. The scaling crew which removed the old Kool Deck simply walked away with very little to no clean up. Now I've concrete chips throughout the artificial turf. Simple job made much more complex by a company that seems to be going under. Now we understand there is a Lien for Funds filed with the Arizona Sec. of State against Mike Dilger owner of Sun State, and Sun State the LLC., by Corporate Service Company and Swift Funding Source of Springfield, IL, and Rockford, NY. If I could give a negative star review, I would. Run, don't walk from Sun State Pools. We signed a contract with them in June of 2023. It is now April of 2025 and our pool isn't even close to being finished. First, they completely screwed up the bid for the job which means they are losing money on this project. Second, the GC we were originally assigned, Matthew, completely ghosted me back in March of 2024. Wouldn't answer my calls or texts. I also left messages with the owner- no one returned my calls. I had to physically go into their office to get anyone to talk to me. We were then assigned a new contractor, Taylor. I can honestly say that not one thing has gone correctly with this job. We constantly fail inspections, we have to redo things because they were done incorrectly the first time, and we can go days and even weeks at a time where no work gets done. Communication has been horrendous and it is just one excuse after another. They have a large chunk of our money which is why we have not left- also, once you pour concrete, it is very difficult to get another company to take over the job. This is the worst company I've ever worked with. Initial communication and meeting was good. After paying my deposit I didn't hear from anyone for days until one evening when my project manager sent me a text that we would be meeting the next day "hopefully on time." I was never contacted before to coordinate a time that would work for me. This is how the rest of the project went. I was only given a text the evening before a crew was to be here. Many times crews would not show up or show up unexpected. They yelled and cursed and left trash in my yard. Several time trash was put in my recycle bin, my hoses were used, dirtied and never put away. Tools were washed in my front garden. Gates were never latched properly and on one occasion the gate was removed from the hinges and not put back on. I repeatedly asked for a schedule and only received one when the final finish was to be applied. The crew never showed up and I was never informed they wouldn't be there. After I contacted my project manager I was informed the finish I selected was not readily available and would cause further delay. I selected an alternate product hoping that would keep things moving. There was no communication for days. After several days of trying to talk with someone other then my extremely inexperienced project manager I was informed my finish would finally be installed, 2 days before the original product was scheduled. The day start up was suppose to happen it was discovered the pump was not wired correctly and would not work. The plumbing fittings were also installed incorrectly. My contract included one month of maintenance, I was informed that day, after I questioned it, that it was no longer available. They poured in a gallon of shock and basically told I was in charge of the rest. A crew came by the next afternoon while I was away to wire the pump correctly. They shut off several breakers and never turned them back on. That evening I returned to a hot and dark house. The tile work was good and the rest of the work average. Credits for work not completed in contract have not been reimbursed. Due to the complete incompetence of the company and crews I would avoid using them for anything. read more

Communication with the project manager Taylor was terrible. Each crew that came and worked on their stage of the build just left their trash in a pile in my yard. Each crew that came the pile got bigger and bigger and my dogs would get into it and drag it all over the yard. Huge hassle to deal with and very unprofessional, not to mention all the toxic stuff my dogs were getting into because of it. Told the PM multiple times we need it cleaned up and got no response. Finally got fed up and called their office to get it felt with. We had all the plumbing redone and the plumber replaced everything except the 2 in piece that was leaking. They tried to charge me another $350 for them to come back out to fix it. Spend days going back and forth with them on who's responsible for that. Got no response for 2 weeks and then all the sudden they were willing to fix it. They left several important things that needed to be done out of the initial quote and didn't tell us till after the loan was approved. So we paid over a grand in cash that should've been included in the loan. After most the work was done and pool was filled we noticed the auto fill wasn't even hooked up. Float was just sitting in there not attached. And the aerator would not spray, just dribbled out. Took about 3 weeks to get the auto fill hooked up and they didn't even look at the aerator. I ended up fixing it myself out of frustration. The skimmer basket was cracked and a piece was broken off, that was supposed to be replaced, never was, they just painted over the broken lid when the painted the deck. I ended up spending $20 on Amazon and buying one myself out of frustration. When the tile was supposed to be installed they dropped of the wrong tile. Then they dropped the correct tile off but half the amount needed to go around the pool. The third time out they got it correct. When scheduling days they were coming to work was a nightmare also. Would get emails for the first 2 stages of work and we would get someone to watch the dogs and everything went smooth. After that crews were showing up unannounced all the time and getting mad dogs were in the backyard and they had to reschedule. Told the PM several times we need to know ahead of time, like the first 2 times, and this won't be an issue. Continued to be an issue. Also we STILL have NOT gotten a final walk thru and pool has been finished for 2 months. The PM Taylor was supposed to do that in June, then called and said he couldn't till after the 4th of July. It's now 7/23 and still haven't heard a word from anyone. During the few times I actually did speak with Taylor about my frustrations throughout the several issues he claimed he had been there at every stage of the builds. Well I have cameras that proves he wasn't, and if he was why did he let the trash pile get so out of hand? There is probably more to this I could put in here but it's too exhausting at this point. Go with another company, or at least another project manager besides Taylor. Nobody ever came to do start up chemicals after pool was filled, I did that. Got NO final paperwork, warranty info, receipts, or anything at all yet we might need for tax or reselling house. Very unprofessional after we just spend about $25,000 with them. And I bet after I post this they are gonna call and try and schedule that final walk thru. Don't bother Taylor. We're done with SSP. Pros: Cost effectiveness and customization. Cons: 1. Communication - Our pool was given to a project manager who then had to leave our project only a few weeks in (I believe it was some sort of family emergency). While obviously we and he both have no control over this (and we wish him our best), our project was unfortunately passed to someone else in the company who seemed inexperienced and overly busy. He failed to communicate with my wife and I in a timely manner in almost every circumstance which often left my wife confused and stressed. She would leave him messages and messages without a timely return. 2. Construction Mistakes - This is by far the most disappointing part of the experience. 1. Firstly, they laid the concrete down WAY too high. Noticeably high. I honestly have no idea why this happened or what caused this to happen (I am assuming, as they stated to us initially, that their contractors are all licensed and experienced). I have included pictures with this review so you can see what I am talking about. My wife was home when the concrete team brought this to our attention the morning they poured the concrete. They offered a few alternatives (a slant or a step down), which my wife said no to. They ended up pouring the slant anyway. We made Sun State aware right away; they offered to go back and gut some of the concrete that their contractor had already laid down. This would, however, unfortunately put us off schedule and at this point we had significant doubts about their ability to do this correctly. So my wife and I decided to bite the bullet and move forward with the construction despite the mistake; we added gravel to our yard (another hidden expense) in order to hide this error. Even still, it is visible to the naked eye. The pool and patio are still usable, but this is not the outcome we hoped for. 2. Secondly, their contracted workers literally left STAKES in the ground and messes throughout the process. I've attached a picture for reference. We did not even try to contact the company for their removal, as their lack of communication had so frustrated by wife by this point that she said she'd rather deal with this on our own then get the company involved to take care of their mistake. Regarding the scrap material and messes left throughout the process, we were told repeatedly they would come to clean up after themselves but each time my wife ended up cleaning up the yard herself as we have a dog and it was not safe to have him in the yard with scrap metal, wood, etc. all over the yard even with supervision. 3. Thirdly, I noticed this red substance on the pool equipment after the pool finished construction. It seems corrosive? I have no idea what it is, but as you can see from my picture, it seems to have literally eaten off half of our valve. Unacceptable. 4. Fourth of all, they constructed the pool too close to our house and failed to make us aware that this would cause the concrete to be slanted away from the house. Perhaps we should've known this to be the case, but we are first-time pool builders and did not realize this. If we had to do it again, we'd place the pool further away from the house to account for the slant. It's not a huge issue, but it's disappointing that this was not made clear to us before the process began. This was also made more dramatic due to the concrete being poured too high. So to conclude, there are initial pros to this company, the most apparent being the cost of the construction. Unfortunately, as my wife and I found out, this is accompanied by mistake after mistake in the construction of the pool. If we had to do it again, we would likely pay a different company more money to ensure that these simple mistakes wouldn't happen to us. While my wife and I can and do enjoy the pool that was built for us (and have had zero issues with it in function for about 9 months), we would've appreciated better communication and more attention to detail between the company and its contractors in the construction of our pool. Our pool has been TWO YEARS under construction with nothing to show for it. Every possible mistake this company could have made they made it, while using every excuse in the book to not take accountability. We have had problem after problem including a contractor filling for bankruptcy to avoid accountability, and yet absolutely NOTHING from the owner. Not once in TWO YEARS has the owner reached out to us with an apology, solution, explanation, time line, nothing. The only communication we've had with the owner is leaving another Yelp reviewer to which he responded. But again, that's the only communication we've received from the owner. The county inspector flunked the first inspection because a tew of the step border tiles were to far apart. They came back the next day and corrected it. sunstate pools started escavating a large swimming pool behind my house on willow ave on september 21,2023... as they were escavating, i did not see any water being dispursed on the dirt. as the tracter moved dirt from the back to the front yard and dumped it into the dump truck the dust continualy blew into my yard. i contacted them and advised both the escavating company and sunstate pools, matt that my pool now has 1/8 inch dirt on the bottom of the pool as well as my entire back yard. my tennants left the back doors open and and the dust blew throughout the house..... pool clean up was $244.00 and inside house was $180.00.... total $424.00 i sent sunstate pictures of the pool dirt and clean up and advised them to cntact me by 10.15.23 with their solution... as of today 10.17.23 they have not responded. What can I say about this company...... Stay away. I have been understanding with COVID that issues and delays are going to happen. They quit cleaning pools in the middle of summer when it's impossible to hire another company. I get staff shortage but not returning calls is not acceptable. They fixed an issue with my filter (went bad after first visit) and it came with a warranty. Over three weeks ago the pool filter started leaking at the joints that they replaced. I have been calling and get no return calls for over three weeks. I sent a chat on Friday and was told to call back after the holiday. Fine everyone deserves time off. I've called every day and no one answers. It's the same voicemail every time. Strange they haven't updated their auto attendant to not feature maintaining pools since they are no longer doing those. I have done everything i can to get them to respond and repair my pool so i can get it maintained before I have a major issue. We can't swim because i can't get the pool cleaned until the repairs are done. Trust the reviews that are negative....i can confirm there is little follow-up or care for their customers investments. I'm really hoping to avoid legal remedies to get this resolved. Update they are not honoring their warranty because of this review. Don't do business with them.
