Oh let me count the many Foodie ways that this place enchants the ever sojourning Foodie Agent's soul! First, and Foodie foremost, before you even get to the food and service, the location's view will leave you breathless, especially if serening this place in sunset mode. Mein Gott! For those that know the beauty of the waterways, marshes and inlets of The Low Country South, even you will be impressed by the partially open, and perfectly elevated balcony high above the river system. Its more like treehouse meets observation deck. Which is incredibly important to note about the area, because, strangely, such views are sorely lacking all along the coastline. Some places are "near the water", or "on the water," but often just at eye level. Here we have an even more distinct property, due to its brilliant situation well above the landscape and higher than your typical waterway restaurant! In fact, by this Foodie Agent's count, I will boast that it has no area equal in terms of waterway setting! I honestly felt like I was dining on the edge of heaven and because the food & service were also of excellence, I'm dubbing Sunbury Crab Co a Foodie Shrine. Now, let's study the service. For those like myself, whom have observed overall customer service, in major decline, this place will restore your faith. Smiles, friendliness and keen observance by each level of employee to your table's needs, garner this place high marks on the Foodie Agent's roster. So many local places suffer from resting on the laurels of being just there for their locals, but Sunbury Crab Co cannot be accused of this lazy crime. I've been accustomed to similar "crab shacks" where even if tourists are a regular, they fail miserably in service consistency. Here, even the high school kid with the busing or expediting job, was involved in the table's requirements and did more than just the obligatory effort. Even though we had one waitress who was as much waitress as she was entertainment, my fellow Foodie Agents and I felt we were in the hands of a thoughtful team effort. Was it just organic Southern Hospitality in action or does it point to higher education of management? Probably the latter, and yes, if it feels organic, or ideally, "effortless", it points to detail education and all the greater of an establishment. Ok, I know, I know, tell you about the food! Fresh catch all around and perfectly prepared and presented is all I have to say! Sumptuous and scrumptious! Appetizers consisted of calamari, but not that usual dribble of squid ringlets alone, we were treated to a mix of squid and octopus! The presentation was fun and it looked a bit like miniature octopus ready to play ring toss! This dish was proof that it just takes a little more effort within the expected, to blaze past any competition and this happened with each and every new dish! But, but, for the same price as you would pay at other, lesser, like "crab shacks." The calamari was lightly battered, not overly fried, and served with what I'll gander to say was a spicy pepper jelly and man, along with the Bloody Marys, the combination of flavors really made it! I ordered another App Special, a sesame seed, encrusted, tuna filet served with a fresh wasabi lime sauce. And you fellow Foodies know, the gulp we all do, when ordering tuna MR on the rare side, because they'll either hit or miss it. Well, they hit it perfectly, and it was flaky, sweet, tender and although some might call it a cliche dish, not at all cliche for Low Country water side dining and was a standout. If the service, atmosphere or food had been any less, I might have found the edible flower garnish on each dish a tad over the top for the setting, but the flower felt more like a smile and a wink for the whole dining experience and I smiled in return. Another Foodie Agent ordered their fried shrimp and home fries, and once more, a home run. I was particularly impressed by the size and color of these shrimp. They were as lovely looking as the nearby sunset and knowing that they'd been netted in the same warmth of the adjoining scenery that day, just made their tender texture and buttery flavor all the more a Foodie joy. The home fries also the real deal and I'll leave it at that. The two other entrees of note were what I'll call the Holy Bucket of Crabs, and then a grilled swordfish of such proportion that it nearly made a grown Foodie weep. Before receiving the mound of blue crabs, my fellow Foodie Agent jested that they would come in a plastic bucket or less, but she gladly ate her words when the metal bucket filled to the brim arrived! My swordfish, coated in a thin sheen of pesto, melted in my mouth and later, as we walked down the connecting dock to the water's edge, we stood in the silence of our happiness, knelt and thanked the Foodie Gods for this place.
