It's always a great time here in this coastal Georgia establishment that celebrates the seas bounty with its customers. I've eaten here many times with family and friends and always enjoy my brief dining get away to Sunbury, Liberty County, Georgia! On this particular night-after-Thanksgiving evening we couldn't wait to have their steamed blue crab and oysters. We arrived early on this cool November evening to enjoy the beautiful view and get a table for our large group of family. Bingo, we did both! The beer was cold and the steamed oysters and blue crab hot! Service was great and accommodating bringing us extra horseradish, shucking utensils, more cold beer, saltine crackers, etc. After the rounds of steamed seafood we ordered baskets of fried shrimp and oysters to pass. Sunbury Crab (SC) is tucked away in Midway somewhere. To me, Midway seems so small yet so vast because of the landscape and all I've ever seen from poking around there a bit, are historical sites. SC is one of only a handful restaurants in the little town, but it's a damn good one! Lucky residents of Midway! I had read great reviews from fellow Yelpers and I've even tried to go there once, but like any small podunk town eatery, it's closed for a couple of days, open only for dinner on weekdays and open on weekends for limited hours. Last weekend, I planned my adventures around the area and SC just so that I could check it out. - Parking - Private gravel lot. - Vibe - Super casual and chill. Locals only for sure. If you know about it and make the effort of getting to it haha. Like I mentioned previously, it's tucked away in some residential area in Midway (which is about halfway between Richmond Hill and Fort Stewart?). If you are familiar with Richmond Hill, the location reminds me of going to Marker 107, but in Midway. It's by the water, so of course, you'll need to do some driving to get out there. Unless you have a boat, then by all means, use that for the scenic route. You definitely ain't coming here for a quick bite (not because of service, but because of the distance LOL)! Once you get there, it's really a shack, a bit weathered, probably due to age and location and it's environment, but charming in that way. It's getting cold now, so when we went, there were thick plastic covers around the outer edges which distorted the view. I'm assuming it's an entirely outdoor restaurant in the summer time? The view must be fantastic without the plastic filter! - TLC - Can't remember our server's name, but she was really nice. I told her it was our first time and she was happy to share some info of SC and some of her recommendations for eats. She was very patient with my kids and I and took the time to answer my hundred questions LOL. - Eats / Refreshments - Did you know that they catch their crabs right by their docks out back?! I'm assuming that's one of the reasons for the location, but you can't get any fresher than that! Seriously, how awesome is that? Maybe that's also the reason for their dinner hours. Catch in the morning, cook them up at night? When giving me recommendations, the server seemed almost hesitant to warn me in fear that she might offend me, but she recommended NOT to get the crabs if I wasn't an expert. HAHA! Expert in which way? I'll gulp down those puppies faster than you can say blue crab, but unfortunately, my crab picking skills won't win me any awards. In fact, they would probably kick me out of the competition. So funny side story... My brother-in-law is from MD and once he took us to a blue crab restaurant. You know, the kind where they use newspaper as table cloths and there are just buckets of crab everywhere? He picked a bucket and ate the crabs within the hour and me? I was on my third one three hours later. I was so tired and hungry by the end, surviving on Hush Puppies....he either felt bad for me or got tired of waiting (probably the latter), so he started picking the crabs for me LOL. Well, needless to say, I didn't have my BIL with me at SC, so I did not order the crabs! Since I was with my kids, I wanted to no mess and no stress! I wish I had though. She said an order was $12 (market price that day) for about 4-5 of them! What a deal! I ended up ordering an app and main dish so that my kids and I (husband was not present on this trip) could share everything. Fried Calamari - These were well done! It's so easy to screw up Calamari and it's unfortunate that so many people get served poorly cooked calamari and then get traumatized from the experience and write it off for good. Not at SC. The batter is perfect too. Light and crispy! It is served with a sweet chili sauce that goes nicely. Fried Shrimps & Fried Oyster Combo Platter - Just like the Calamari, well done! The shrimps had barely any batter, more like a light dusting of flour? Just perfect! The oysters were great too. They had a slightly different kind of batter, a bit thicker than the shrimps, but great! My kids gobbled it all up. It comes with two sides, so I opted for steamed broccoli for the kids and Okra and Stewed Tomatoes on rice for me! Yum! I think I had read Ron P. mentioning it in his review, so good call, Ron! - Kiddos - I forgot to take a picture, but if I remember correctly, they have a Kids menu! I didn't order from it however, because I felt like the app and main dish to share worked out perfectly for us. After our delicious lunch, we took a walk out back to their dock and the view is just really stunning. So peaceful and just hearing the breeze and staring out at miles and miles of salt marsh. It's nice to stop and just soak it all in. There is also a cool swing bench over there. You should definitely take a walk down there and sit back and just BE for a few minutes. read more

This is a real gem!! We arrived off the ocean just for much needed fuel. When we arrived we realized this little adorable spit had floating docks, fuel plus a restaurant...win, win, win! The owners are Barney & Elaine who immediately make you feel part of the family. Barney caught our lines & pumped the diesel. We tied up to stay overnight right at the fuel dock (it's Nov so off season) & decided to walk the little country road & see some historical sites. The setting of the restaurant has a Keys vibe but not at all touristy. Elaine met us at the bar & waitlisted us since it was packed...on a Wed evening nonetheless! They have a small, friendly bar where we had a cocktail & met a super nice local. Everyone there were locals & super nice. The food? I'm getting to it! I had the fried combo oysters & shrimp w homemade coleslaw & homemade fries. Paul had rib eye, black eyed peas & mashed potatoes. Both were amazing...especially due to our server Kelsey or Chelsea (sorry!) She came back oftwn for refills on our beverages & to check if everything was to our liking. As well, both Elaine & Barney stopped to chat at our table throughout our meal. We felt as though they were our good friends already! You can't teach that!! One son is the chef and the other the grabber/oysterman. They convinced us to try the pineapple upside down...who does that anymore?! It's our favorite! We've been here several times and the service has always been good, not overbearing, and the restaurant is very busy so the servers have a lot in their hands. The only reason I'm going with four stars is because it took us 2 hours to be seated. When we arrived, we were told 45 minutes but probably less. Next time, I know to call ahead. Once we were seated, I saw why I takes so long. It's not a big place but people tend to just hang out after they eat playing with phones and talking as if they don't recall the 100 people waiting for a table. There is a bar window so you can order drinks and check out the grounds, dock and the river while you wait. They also have bug sprays the bar because the biting gnats at dusk will eat you alive! With that said, the food was outstanding. I don't eat much seafood but I had mahi, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. Everything was fresh, tasted great and cooked perfectly. My BF had the seafood platter. It was a lot of work to eat but he said it was really good and worth the work. There was none of that frozen food nonsense. The best part was the bill; for what we ate it was on about $60 not including the beer since we'd already paid the bar for that part. We will definitely go back. read more

I asked if there was anyway we could wait or split up two tables. We were tired and looking for decent food. We went based on the recommendation of the bungalow owner where we were staying. It was easy enough to find. I'll put it straight out. We believe in wearing masks because we care about everyone, not just ourselves. Not a single staffer wore a mask. We had already decided that we would eat outside, so it was not an issue. I mention it in case others prefer indoor dining. Most staff kept a proper distance away except when setting down items. We started with nachos and salsa. The salsa was delicious with just the right amount of spice. The salads were crisp and fresh. I had scallops. They were perfectly cooked. Dessert was chocolate lava cake. This was disappointing, we've had better lava cakes. They didn't have decaffeinated coffee. We had a great view and a nice breeze. So why not 5 stars? Absolutely perfectly executed low country seafood. I can't remember a more authentic steamed blue crab experience outside of Maryland (and you know I asked for extra Old Bay). Place has a Bubba Gump Shimp Co interior with plates and signs and southern references, except it's packed with locals and they live the ambiance. Situated waterfront there is a fantastic view with zero questions all of their seafood comes off the fishing boats not 500 yards away. Where do i start with this restaurant. We walk in on a sunday around 3 pm, and they are not walk-in in friendly. If you dont have a reservation, dont bother coming here. There is no wait list at all they will just turn you away. We had the tuna app and wings and fried fish tacos for dinner. Wings were recommended by the server, btw when asked. We get the tuna, and i kid you not. it's just tuna slabs on a plate with soy wasabi and ginger. Tuna is okay. Next, the entrees the fried fish tacos were great with a nice horseradish kick, and the fries were great. The wings, on the other hand, were so dry im happy i ordered my 1$ tap water, and yes, they do charge for tap water, so be aware. I wouldn't ask for ice cause I'd probably be charged another dollar on top. I've never sent back wings in my life, let alone a dish at a restaurant. So we eat one wing and send them back. Also, dont bother doing 2 different flavors for the wings cause they won't do it anyways Go figure. We get our check, and the wings are still on there, and the server say we at 3 or 4 wings, so we couldn't remove them. So we ask for a manager and we explain our situation. The entire time, he is against refunding anything and, in his 20 years, has never had wings sent back. Thanks for the back story. And i qoute the manager said " i dont send out juicy wings". This place from beginning to end was like an episode of kitchen nightmares. Do yourself a favor and go a couple miles more to fish tales! We didn't vlame our server, which was great, and we still left 20%. Go ahead and avoid this place. read more

If you are looking for something different/off the beaten path then Sunbury Crab Co is your place ! It is nestled along the water in Midway, Ga. It offers gorgeous views, great food and all the laid back coastal vibes one would expect from a seafood place. We've eaten here several times and have always had a pleasant experience. It is suggested to do call ahead seating especially during peak dinner hours/ season as it gets rather busy! In the Spring/Summer months they often have live music and the patio bar is a great way to relax and enjoy the views! The parking is ample and the boat dock is spacious as well. It's just a short boat ride from Richmond Hill ( highly suggested as it is not only way quicker but also allows you to soak up the beauty of Coastal Ga) Docking to dine is free. The dinning room is open air ( during Spring/Summer) It's definitely quaint and has all the Coastal vibes. The staff is friendly and attentive. The menu is limited but offers a little something for everyone. They have a small kids menu or the adult meals are big enough to share if you have little ones. The blue crabs are delicious and as fresh as you can get. They get the crabs right off their dock. They are sold at market price ( usually around $12 for 4-5) They are cleaned and ready for you to dig in. They come with a bucket and mallet!
