I am a regular customer at the sunflower cafe, but last night I was treated so poorly, I don't know if I will ever go back. Last night was Friday 6/21/19 the Cafe was open until 10pm. I got there around 8 to meet a friend. They started packing everything up extremely early. Granted there was a storm last night. I was drinking hot tea, and I asked for more hot water. They had already put the urn away and the shift leader flat out told me no. She was very rude. I'm sure it wouldn't have taken a lot of effort to get 1 cup of hot water. It was before 9 o'clock. At 9:30 my friend and I were eating with full plates of food, and the same shift leader came up to us and asked if she could take our plates. Full plates of food!! I told her I was still working. She said, well we are closing in a half hour, and we want to get out of here as soon as possible. She was so hostile with us. I felt so uncomfortable, I packed my food up and left. Meanwhile there was another couple at a table, who got there after us, and she did not talk to them at all. My friend and I were the only two people of color sitting down that night, I honestly wonder if that was a factor. I have been working in the service industry full time for the past year. Never in my life have I asked a customer to leave during normal business hours. I could understand if we were lingering past 10pm, but rushing us a half hour before close? That was incredibly rude. We spent over $50 and tipped generously. It's very disappointing to be treated so poorly and being in such an unfriendly an unaccommodating space. If she would have politely told us that they were closing early due to the storm, we would have kindly left. But instead we were basically kicked out through hostility and passive aggression. I am very upset because I do really enjoy the food. I am a longtime vegan, and I really love supporting vegan businesses. But I've never had such an upsetting dining experience!!! The other staff members were very kind and helpful. The woman who prepared our food was very knowledgeable. And a woman with purple hair was especially kind. It was mainly the shift manager who was so rude and aggressive and ruined the night. By the time we left, the brunt of the storm was over. So there was really no reason for such anxiety. I've never had such poor service, especially at a counter service restaurant!! I hate to say it, but I'm going to have to take my business elsewhere. For anyone still reading this, the food is good, the prices are reasonable, but the service is aforementioned. I was really looking forward to opening of the bakehouse, but now I don't know if I can support. read more

I've really grown to enjoy this neighborhood find. Their burger bowls are amazing, and come in different varieties. A bed of quinoa and kale, topped with their own veggie burger and toppings and garlic aioli sauce... so good! And their vegan and gluten free desserts are amazing!! I love their chocolate chip cookie dough concoction. It is a great treat for anyone with a sweet tooth. Anyone who is following a vegan/vegetarian diet, or just looking to lower their meat intake can easily find something to eat here that is both delicious and filing! The prices can be a little high for someone on a fixed budget, by I understand you pay for good quality foods. And parking can be very tricky during peak business hours, so if you can, wait to take a slightly later lunch so that you know you can find proof at this popular spot. read more

I'm not vegan, but my daughters are, so I find myself eating plant-based meals quite frequently. The barbecue wrap here was not just tasty by plant-based standards, but excellent for any meal! This place is "Healthy Heaven"! I go here at least twice a week. The servers are all; eclectic, earthy and friendly. The atmosphere is casual, but clean and It is a cafeteria style restaurant. Like a vegetarian "Arnold's Meat & Three". They have a wide assortment of dishes ranging from Thai Ginger Tofu that can be served with sesame Kale to a plethora of Veggie Burgers. My favorite veggie burger so far is their "Bahn Mi" Burger. It's served with a sriracha aioli, Asian coleslaw, lettuce, tomato and onion. I enjoy it on a Spinach Wrap, but they have several options like gluten free buns. If you'd like a vegan cheese substitute like vegan cheddar or mozzarella, it costs an extra 75 cents. They have a wide assortment of sides to go along with your meal. My favorites are the vegan collard greens, curried chickpeas, sesame Kale and sweet potato casserole. They have Agave sweetened Soda with flavors such as "Root Beer" and "Strawberry Rhubarb" to name a couple. They have a nice front porch and seating in the back to enjoy on a nice sunny day. Although I am not a full time vegan or vegetarian, this place is FANTASTIC and would recommend this to anyone visiting or living healthy in Nashville. 5 stars! read more

Update: We were here yesterday and it was intermittently busy. We love Sunflower Cafe and we come here fairly frequently. Yesterday there was a bit of a busy spike. A woman behind the counter kept yelling it was busy and that they will get to us shortly, even though no one was complaining. She got my partner's order and had the wrong hummus. My partner gently reminded her that he ordered another type and she yelled at him and bit his head off reminding him how busy they were, in a condescending voice. I couldn't tell her anything because at the same time, someone was manning register who was sobbing. I kept trying to make sure she was okay. She said something happened to her mother but that she couldn't leave work. I'm not sure who the manager on that day, I think it may be the woman who yelled that I found grossly unprofessional. A young male worker felt bad and tried to explain to us that it was busy. We let him know we understood. Another time, I asked what other flavors you had for kombucha since we buy a bottle of the peach when we don't have time to make our own at home, and a young man proceeded to tell me what kombucha was. I gently know I knew what it was and he walked away without telling me the flavors. Both the food and the service is a hit or miss. Wish this place had more consistency. We don't come back for a while when we have a bad experience. When we do come back, we're reminded why we stayed away to begin with. read more

My daughter had a veggie burger. The moose was very thick and rich. One bite was plenty, saving the rest for later. My daughter said the chickpea salad would've been better warm. a great vegetarian restaurant. the people are friendly, the choices are plentiful and the food is most importantly, flavorful. the staff can help you out on what's what and they have a variety of sides to go along with your wrap, entree or special of the day. the restaurant is clean and they have ample seating most of the time. but the parking situation kinda sucks during lunch so be prepared to wiggle around to find a spot. their tempeh bbq wrap was delicious and filling. i'm not vegetarian so i always worry, i'll never get full but i can gladly say, i do here. it's their flavors that are great, not to mention all the food has great color so it's very appealing. give it a try, just to have good food. you don't have to be a veggie eater to appreciate this spot. their faux crab cake? :thumbsup: read more

The cheery exterior of Sunflower Cafe is a welcome greeting any time of the day. The happy motif extends throughout the space from the patio (even attractive in early fall), to the nice, smiling employees, to the airy, bright interior which belies the cafeteria-style service of the restaurant. I think the Cafe offers a fine lunch experience for vegetarians, vegans and the vegetarian-friendly. As a way to entice meat eaters onto a new path, it has a bit of a way to go. I am a vegetarian-friendly omnivore. I don't eat as much beef or pork as I used to and will, eventually, skew my diet to be majority vegetable-friendly. So, when I am opting for vegetarian fare, I want to make sure that it's a meal I'd want to eat over and over again. Sunflower isn't lacking for options. The menu is large and, as mentioned earlier, you walk in, grab a tray and figure out how you want to create your meal. I studied a bit in advance, so I knew that I was going to go for a veggie burger and sides. With everything being a la carte, your meal can add up quickly so it's best to come in prepared for battle. I chose the All-American veggie burger with curried chick peas and fruit salad. My burger was served on a wheat bun and was loaded with fantastic toppings: pickles, onions, greens, tomato, and mustard. The combo of topping worked well but the patty fell apart and the bun was too soft/weak for the burger so it, too, disintegrated. I wound up having to eat the burger with a fork and knife. One of my pet peeves about veggie burgers is that the fall apart upon grabbing them and attempting to eat them. I don't like the mess and eating a burger with a knife and fork (for me) takes away from the burger experience. It's an idiosyncrasy but it's mine and it annoys and disrupts the dining experience for me. Yes, I know. #firstworldproblems The chick peas fell into another one of my veggie pet peeves: blandness. How people can make curried anything bland is beyond me yet it happens more often than one would think. The dish was cold, yellow chick peas devoid of much flavor. I didn't finish them. I was pleased to find that my fruit salad was more citrus and berry than melon (another pet peeve) so it was a nice way to end my lunch. My Sunflower Cafe experience was by no means a disaster but I was expecting so much more. The menu is fantastic and the vibe is really positive. This might come as a bit of a shock to my regular readers, but I spent about 6 years being vegetarian and I was vegan for about 1.5 of those years. Just because I re-embraced my love of meat doesn't mean that I can't get behind some seriously good vegetarian fare. Honestly, sometimes it feels good to eat something that seems much healthier than bacon (not to knock bacon- just sometimes I can feel my ventricles closing if I eat too much). The Sunflower Cafe, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Berry Hill, opened about a year ago. Steve and I checked it out for dinner before a movie on a recommendation from my best friend Jeff, who also happens to be a vegetarian. Sunflower Cafe serves their food cafeteria style. Normally I don't like this type of food because mass produced items are never as good and they lose their flavor the longer they sit in the trays. But for some magical reason, the food at the Sunflower Cafe didn't taste like regular cafeteria style food. Maybe it's in the cooking, I don't know. Basically you look at all the goodies down the line and pick what you want. Our server was very nice and super helpful. I asked for recommendations and I got them in abundance. Nothing makes me happier than when I encounter a genuinely affable server. The decor is simple, bright and clean. Long dining tables reminiscent of college dining halls populate the place. I dig this set up because it allows you to make new friends if you choose. This might be the cleanest restaurant I have ever stepped foot in. Everything was SPARKLING, even the bathroom. Plus, I totally love the little Sunflowers they have dotted around the place. I chose the the tofu buffalo sliders with sunflower rice and sweet potato casserole. Each night there's a rotating cast of entrees and sides. You have an option to pick an entree and two sides, or a whole bunch of sides as your meal. The food bar was packed with tons of options- making the decisions hard! I enjoyed the sliders and was impressed with the crisp layer of breading they were able to get around the tofu. It created a really nice crunch. Since I like spicy food I think they could stand to put a bit more spicy buffalo sauce on the tofu. I liked the bread to filling ratio of this dish and the blue cheese dressing just knocked it out of the park. Buffalo sauce and blue cheese are a match made in heaven. The sunflower rice was just OK. I enjoyed the nice crunch of the sunflower seeds, but besides that it didn't have any distinct flavor. The sweet potato casserole was hearty, thick and sweet without making your teeth hurt. Overall, I was really impressed with this plate and what turned out to be a huge portion. Steve had the Thai ginger tofu over sunflower rice with a side of sweet potato casserole (great minds think alike). I really liked the curry. It was thick and had a lovely creaminess about it. The tofu was firm without being hard, a difficult line to walk when it comes to soy. Both Steve and I ordered kombucha on tap from tealixir. I keep ordering it, so I guess I like it. Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Sunflower. The food was fresh and there were tons of options. The staff was friendly and helpful, and they keep the space itself super clean. The best part was the fast service; we were able to make our movie with no problem! read more

Overrated. It's ok, edible and I was starving. Would I come again? No. I ordered a mushroom veggie burger on a gluten free bun. Hubby ordered bbq veggie burger on a spinach wrap. I wanted to order a bowl but watched the guy in front of me get a bowl and quite frankly nothing looked appetizing coming out of the steaming food bar. The burger tastes like rice and sunflower seeds and the aioli sauce is on heavy, I'm guessing to give it some flavor. Hubby tried potato salad before ordering it and he said no after trying it. I eat and make lots of vegan dishes so I was disappointed. So for the price and the terrible parking and the just ok kind of food I give it 3 stars. read more

Not only does the Sunflower Cafe offer delicious, wholesome vegan lunches/dinners, but they also have life-changing gluten free desserts! Unlike The Wild Cow, The Sunflower Cafe doesn't exude that token, hipster pretentiousness that often comes with vegan spots. Instead, its staff is welcoming, kind, and accommodating. Vegan & Vegetarian Holy Grail! Just finished the most incredible spinach kale wrap [Sesame Kale with Rice or Quinoa, Red Onions, Tomato & Garlic Aioli] from my first visit to Sunflower Cafe. The sriracha hummus and veggies sticks [or pita your preference] were a excellent addition and rounded my bill to about $10. The cafe isn't a sit/down & order type of restaurant. You walk in and are immediately hit with the delicious aromas of the hot bar. The staff was delightful as they helped my friend and I navigate their options. You can order from the full menu, try the daily special, or make your way down the cafeteria style bar of hot/cold foods toward the register. They also have a soda fountain of agave sweetened flavored sodas. There is plenty of seating indoors and some out on the patio. The parking can be a tight fit around lunch! read more

Although I am not a vegetarian, I have an enormous appreciation for vegan/vegetarian cuisine and am a regular at other meat-free restaurants in the area. I ordered a three side combo with sesame kale, hummus with veggie sticks, and what was supposed to be a Caprese salad. The kale was pretty uninteresting...just a dab of sesame oil on steamed kale. The hummus, however, was a huge let down. It had ZERO flavor. I'm pretty sure they just mashed up some canned chickpeas...no seasoning, completely bland. Lastly, I tasted the Caprese salad. This almost made my eyes water: a slice of tomato, mozzarella, and barely any olive oil or balsamic vinegar on the entire dish, leaving it quite dry. This establishment upsets me a great deal. I feel that very little thought went into these recipes and they have no knowledge of how to season...well, anything. I appreciate that they are using local produce as the base of their dishes, but these kinds of eateries give vegetarian cuisine a bad wrap. Healthfully prepared veggies are supposed to be exciting! Where's the Bragg's Aminos? Garlic? Lemon juice? Apple Cider Vinegar? I have no qualms about paying over ten bucks for a veggie plate, but this was just not good. Boy have I fallen in love with this place. It's a veghead's dream. Apparently lunch goers feel this way too, as it has always been packed. Not to fret, the line does move rather quickly across the cafeteria style serving area. The staff is eager to answer any questions, and even offer a sample if you're unsure about a dish. Some of my favorites have been the steamed kale with sesame and the Cannallini bean and potato soup. Gawd that soup is good. The tomatoes served in their tomato, mozzarella and basil salad looked mealy, but the flavor was there -- very much to my surprise. While it's a bit pricey for lunch, the portions are really large. Plus with my somewhat restrictive diet, I have yet to run across any dish served here that I cannot eat. Love. Note there is additional parking in the back...or the front...depending on how you look at it I suppose. Ha! We were in the mood to throw down tonight. We drove past Waffle House and Bar B Cutie only to last a half mile longer arriving at our bohemian salvation known as Sunflower Cafe. From the parking lot we knew this gem was a winner. Salads, wraps, bowls and tacos alike looked delicious , fresh and artistically paired with original vegan sides. My dinner was the portobello wrap. Thick slices of portobello mushrooms nestled in with tomato, spicy pineapple relish, spinach and sautéed onions was mouthwatering good and a steal at $6.99. Their organic agave nectar sweetned soda fountain has me wanting to come back to try all their unique flavors. The staff is friendly and sunny as the decor and the back porch had us lingering in good conversation long after our vegan taste bud adventure had concluded. A great new vegetarian/vegan restaurant in the 100 oaks/berry hill area. I chose the stuffed green peppers with a side of roasted butternut squash and the apples with the vanilla sauce. The apples are on point!! I love the options on the natural soda fountain and they even have kombucha on tap! Finding a parking space was a little tricky. They have a side alley to a parking lot but it was blocked off by the cars parked. The line was long, but moved quickly due to the cafeteria style serving. A delicious vegetarian spread, served cafeteria-style, this place is definitely worth trying for vegetarians and omnivores alike. Shepherd's pie, two different types of veggie burgers, lentils, seasoned kale, vegan pudding... the selections are diverse but include many of the American vegetarian staples. Some of the cooking can taste like home-cooking and not as greasy/salty/fatty as the standard American restaurant, but hey, I think this is actually a good thing and should be the standard at most restaurants instead of the outrageous salt/oil portions that most chains have. This place is not as edgy hipster as The Wild Cow, and not quite as nicely decorated as Woodlands, but it definitely fills part of the expanding demand in healthy, tasty food options. The food is fast since most of it is in the cafeteria line, and you pay at the counter and seat yourself. The meals are moderately priced, and they have a selection of vegan desserts and all-natural soda drinks as well. The restaurant itself has a covered outdoor porch, and is in Berry Hill, the funky little town that refuses to be part of Nashville. It is set back a block from Thompson Lane and a couple blocks from the Tibetan temple (Padmasambhava Buddhist Center) and Vanderbilt One Hundred Oaks - lots of stuff around it, a little harder to find the first time, but signage is decent, and it's worth the trip to get nourishment here. read more

It's a little confusing when you come in how to order. They have some entrees or you can pick and choose from the selection on display. I got the veggie burger which I heartily recommend. It seemed to have beets in it which I haven't seen before, but they really made it so rich. colorful and delicious. I do wish, however, that an employee (or a sign!) had listed what was inside the pattie so I wouldn't just have to guess. My entree came with two sides and I got a kale salad and some soup with a clear broth. The sides were fine, even good, but I was honestly most impressed with the burger. Next time I will keep searching through the available sides for something which might closer match the wow factor of the burger. The seating is a little cramped, but it's just that popular, I suppose. It won me over. I'm definitely coming back when I am in town next. read more

I've really enjoyed every dish that I've eaten here, with my personal favorite being the Thai Ginger Tofu. Service is friendly and the place always seems busy, but not so much that it's a problem. I've seen a lot of people comment that the price and portion sizes don't match up, but I got two meals out of an entree and two-side combo last time I was there, and they let me sub one of the smaller entrees in for the place of a side. It came to around $12, which I thought was really reasonable considering the amount of food I got. There are places in my hometown that would get away with charging twice that. I also grabbed a muffin on my way out and they were selling the muffins of they day two-for-one, so I grabbed one for my dining companion as well. They were lemon raspberry and while they weren't the most flavorful muffins I've ever had, they were incredibly moist and soft. I would certainly recommend Sunflower Cafe to anyone looking for vegan food in the Nashville area. read more

We went for lunch (1pm) on a Saturday afternoon and started our meal with 2 starters: hummus with veggie sticks and pad thai salad. For our entrees we had the Traditional BBQ Sandwich and the Bahn Mi veggie burger. The housemade hummus was good, the pad thai salad was exceptional. BBQ sandwich was pretty good, a little light on the sauce, nice veggie toppings. Bahn Mi burger was well made, good texture, we both actually preferred it to the BBQ. I would recommend sitting on the porch in nice weather. In total, we spent $28, if you are vegetarian or vegan it has a lot of well made options. I ordered the Vegan Barbecue Wrap with a gluten free wrap and OH my gosh - it was sooo much better than I expected it to be! Honestly it was the best meal I've had in a very long time. Typically I like to visit a place a few times before I write a review, but I'll easily make an exception for Sunflower Café. The variety and creativity of their selections make it possible to eat here for days in a row without eating the same thing twice or getting bored of the food. The cafeteria style layout threw me off at first, but having all the food right in front of you made it easier to order than just reading descriptions on a menu. Honestly, everything looked good. We both got the Chef's Special, a main dish with two sides. It was really hard to choose. And you get so much food for $12, we probably could have split one order. It was fun trying each others' choices- there's such a huge variety. We had some paella, ginger tofu, sesame kale, sweet potatoes, and baba ghanoush. I will definitely be returning. read more

This one of those interesting times where a restaurant impressed me as much with their character and ingenuity as much as their flavor. As other reviews here will attest to, Sunflower Cafe and Wild Cow are frequently mentioned in the same sentence, but their atmospheres are completely different. Sunflower is less hipster-y and more...arts-and-craftsy, in a way? It's hard to explain. But enough of being this wishy-washy...was the food good? To be brief: yes. I had a portobello mushroom burger mushroom-style (I obviously had a certain hankering that night). In spite of the sort of the cafeteria-type layout of the place, the ingredients all tasted remarkably fresh, and the aioli sauce was pretty darn tasty. I also commend Sunflower for the interesting soda options they have on tap along the back wall. One thing to be aware of, though: I personally found the portions to be a bit small, and I came away just a touch hungry at the end of the meal. I'd still say I'm the bigger fan of Wild Cow's irresistable flavors and rapturous entree options...but seeing as they're in completely different parts of town, there's no reason not to have both in your arsenal. read more

I've been here more than a few times as the food is so delicious, however this visit was special. Special because I only had one credit card and it was declining. Needless to say I was more than embarrassed of my entire situation when Jess says she'll pay for it out of her tips. She could tell I was in need of an angel. I came here today to get a few sides to hold me over until dinner was finished at home. Let's just say I could have kept my money and just stayed hungry until this evening. Everything was extremely bland...I'm talking never touched a single spice or seasoning. In addition, I asked for crackers to go with my flavorless soup and they wasted a wax bag to give me THREE teeny rice crackers. They could have kept them honestly. I've traveled the country and eaten at a lot of vegan restaurants. This place gets it right. A good assortment of entrées, side dishes, daily specials and desserts make for a nice menu. I went with the daily special for Taco Tuesday and had the bbq tacos with avocado. I also went with the kale and collard greens sides, and I washed it all down with a nice IPA. The servers were friendly and offered recommendations, but they didn't try to force their suggestions. The atmosphere was laid back, and I got to enjoy a nice conversation with my friend without feeling like we had to shout at each other to be heard or that we were bothering anyone else. I don't get to Nashville that often, but the next time I'm in town, this place will be my first choice for dining. read more
