My favorite restaurant in Nashville is Sunflower Cafe. The food is flavorful, unique, and the serving size is perfect. The service is phenomenal and the carry out option is brilliant. I get takeout several times per week for lunch and it's easy to order, pay online and then grab my bag to go without having to stop at the cashier (although if it's the beautiful manager/owner who happens to be around the cash register, I might just grab something else to make small talk and see her gorgeous smile! :) ) The food is amazing, the staff are wonderful, and the atmosphere and eating experience is perfect. I feel guilty whenever I give less than a 5-star review to a vegan or vegetarian restaurant. I love having restaurants that cater to us vegans and I really appreciate having Sunflower Cafe in the community. Many people absolutely love it, it is not quite what I am looking for in a dining experience. Try it, you might love it too. So far, I have been to Sunflower cafe 5 or 6 times and have tried many things on the menu. I have been consistently underwhelmed by the food overall though there are some glowing parts that I really appreciate and will highlight. First, the epicness: -The Kale will blow your mind. it isn't overdone and has a great flavor. They use a bit of sesame oil and it is delicious. Each time I have gone, I have had this and it is great. -Locally brewed kombucha on tap! Yes please! -Organic agave sweetened sodas! -A bunch of delicious local baked goods that are delicious. -Most of the ingredients are local and ethically sourced. Now for the less than awesome: Each time I have been, the satisfaction to price ratio has been a bit off. The food comes in small portions that leave me wanting a snack when I leave. The hot food is also not quite hot. That is the problem with warming trays, the food is never quite as delicious as it should be. Additionally, the reverse buffet style really precludes many interesting flavors and dishes. In an attempt to please the masses, creativity and flavor seems to be getting lost. Today I ate the Thai Ginger Tofu over quinoa and was very disappointed. I had to smother it in sriracha to make it something edible. It also had an unfortunate color, off brownish. Last time I went I had the lasagna and thought it was good but the one inch sliver I got left my belly wanting more. There was one slice left (the size that the person got in front of me) but when I ordered it was cut in half to make the last of it stretch. all this for $11. Add a drink (or anything else), it adds up to about $15. Thats a bit more than my lunch budget can handle, especially when I leave still wanting. I will keep coming for vegan events and organized meals, but it is not one of my regular haunts I would recommend everyone interested in food try this place. It may not be my favorite, but it might be yours. read more

Laura Yazdian has opened a healthy herbivore Melrose-area cafe. The big bright deck painted sunflower yellow with gray accents is my favorite spot to eat here. It's comfortable even in cool weather since it's enclosed with a clear covering. Sunflower Cafe is easy to find, appropriately by the intersection of Iris and Azalea streets. Locally sourced ingredients from growers in middle Tennessee including Bells Bend and Delvin Farms are the basis of their food. The choices are a variety of vegetarian organic, gluten-free and vegan recipes. I wasn't surprised at the veggie burger or hummus which are often found at natural foods restaurants. My favorite is the special Sunflower beans and rice plate with fresh veggies, cheese and spicy sauce. It's geshmak! Other items that shine at the Sunflower are the bean wrap and sweet delights like homemade crispys, cookies and chocolate. read more

This was my first visit and boy was it delicious! I had the traditional BBQ sandwich and omg! Paired it with the corn chowder, which was also yummy but needed a bit more seasoning. I also had the pad Thai salad, it was ok, not my favorite. The cookie dough parfait was also amazing! My aunt had her first vegan meal with the Thai ginger bowl and she cleaned her plate. I really enjoyed this place. I'm currently new to the vegan life and they offered a great meal for a great price.I went here for lunch one afternoon after a co worker told me about it. I had the rice and bean wrap and broccoli salad. The portion size was great considering I've found that with his eating lifestyle I'm hungry more often. EXTREMELY UNHAPPY that new owners decided to increase the prices & took away combination specials/plates. It's all a la carte. Before I knew this I ordered my usual veggie burger & 2 sides. With a drink it is now $18+ dollars. Yes, you read that right. OVER EIGHTEEN DOLLARS. That's insane. It's a veggie burger, beans & potatoes. Not an enormous amount of food. This sadly certainly has tainted my view of coming here. I will now have to choose it less often & likely won't as readily suggest it to others if this continues to be the case. (Most of my friends are on a budget too.) Plus they're bringing beer on the premises. So I get the message the agenda isn't to provide affordable clean vegan food--It's to make money. Sure, we all need & want to make money. But, this is food - not the doctor's office. We have to consume food everyday all day. My trust value drops too when things like this happen because owners who do this typically eventually slowly skimp on quality. Maybe that's not the case here. Let's hope not. In my opinion, it's a terrible move & not a way to grow your business - but given how Berry Hill continues to be more & more upscale, I suppose the elite will love it & the rest of us will move along. Sad. And if I seem upset well, yes, I'm upset. One of my favorite places just bumped itself out of my already on the bubble budget. In a positive note, the owner was kind and took my complaint thanking me for being here. He said they had to raise prices to keep up with rising food costs. read more

I have been here a couple of times but today I took my husband for the first time and he is highly allergic to sunflower seeds. The person who checked us out we asked if the crackers ( that had seeds in them ) had sunflower seeds. And she found out that there was not. When we went to sit down she came over and told us however the veggie burger that he had gotten had sunflower seeds in them..... she took it and asked what he wanted to replace it with. She was supper great in realizing that this was a potential hospital trip and she came right out with the replacement item that was safe (she made sure) for us. Amazing quality vegan food! You would never know it's vegan! Fast service! Wide variety of food that is ready to serve and if you order of the menu it comes out as fast as the ready to serve food! Came here with my brother in law who's a big guy! This cafe had a cafeteria style format where you look through the glass and choose what you want and the woman behind the counter puts it on a plate for you. We ordered probably 9 different dishes between both of us and we were both very full and satisfied by the end. Love the flavors and the "localness" of it! Fantastic!! I am incredibly picky when it comes to what I eat and this place caters to my selective diet. Almost all vegan food and mostly gluten-free as well. I had their vegan, gluten-free lasagna this past Friday and even my fiance who is skeptical of the vegan way loved it. They typically have a veggie burger with sunflower seeds, brown rice, and veggies which is really tasty with their sun-dried tomato paste. Everything they have is creative, fresh, natural food. So glad we went! The best vegetarian restaurant I've been to here in Nashville. The service was great. They took the time to walk us through all the options and shared samples of some of their faves. I've eaten here many times, but haven't been in about a year. I'm a health-conscious vegetarian, and usually like this kind of food, but the food here always struck me as being just a little too "earnest"; I thought it was more "good for you" than "good." I went today after a long absence, though, and I could not have been more wrong. The food was incredible. My 2018 resolution is to greatly reduce my meat consumption, and so a logical extension involved my first venture to this vegetarian restaurant due to its good buzz and ease of access for me. Well, the buzz was justified as I loved my order of the burger bowl (traditional veggie burger) with quinoa and a side of broccoli salad. Very filling, and so tasty that I don't think achieving my resolution will be as difficult as I had imagined! Good service and a warm atmosphere, with my only (minor) complaint being that the entrance to the parking lot needs major repaving. This place was pretty good. I got the Tempeh BBQ burger on a gluten free bun. This place is heaven for anyone who is vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free. The menu was extensive, but I wish I would have gotten a bowl. The agave soda was amazing. The sweet potato casserole was like a dessert. Love this place! What the Wild Cow lacks in service, Sunflower goes above and beyond them and their food is SO good. This is a gem for those of us that are constantly struggling to find good vegan food. The food was great, but not fancy fair. It is more sandwiches, salads and sides. Everything we tried was excellent. It wasn't exactly what I expected when I walked in, but I was still pleased. It is a relaxed and casual atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside on the front porch and despite it being a scorching hot day the ceiling fans on the patio and shade made it enjoyable. The food is served cafeteria style so there's no real wait. The one thing that makes it clearly 4 stars instead of 5 is the parking. They were busy the day we were there, but by no means were all the tables full. Even with that customer load the parking was horrible. There is no flow to the small lot they do have, and as we sat on the patio we repeatedly saw customers give up and leave just because they had to back out of the drive to let a car out that was trying to leave. The drive is barely wide enough for two cars but then they allow some parking along the drive that reduces it to a single lane. Thus if you are entering and someone is leaving, somebody has to back up and out of the way. When there are cars behind you this becomes a big problem quick. That said, it wouldn't stop me from going again, but it is something they need to improve upon. read more
